  • Petrol pumps to face strict consequences for creating artificial fuel shortage

Petrol pumps to face strict consequences for creating artificial fuel shortage

The inflation crisis in the country has been exacerbated by an artificial fuel shortage in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Petrol and diesel supplies have been cut off at several pumps for two days.

Petrol pump owners were only supplying petrol of Rs250 for motorcycles and Rs500 for a car. Dealers and pump owners are causing the shortage in order to make extra profit when fuel prices are announced to increase. During the day, 60 per cent of pumps have ceased supplying fuel, rising to 80 per cent at night until midnight. The dealers and owners are waiting for the government to announce a fuel price hike until midnight.

In response to the fuel shortage, Rawalpindi’s Deputy Commissioner, Shoaib Ali, has ordered assistant commissioners to take immediate action against petrol pumps for not supplying fuel. Despite previous fines, notices, and applications for FIRs against Oil Marketing Companies, the government has been unable to control the artificial petrol crisis in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and across the country. There is speculation that the government will raise fuel prices by Rs20 to Rs30 per liter, leading to over 60 per cent of dealers and pump owners halting supply for two days to increase profits. Despite having tanks filled with petrol, they have stopped supply.

Assistant Commissioner Syed Asad Abbas informed The News that the DC has ordered strict action against petrol pump owners for causing an artificial fuel shortage for two days. The AC has begun taking action, including sealing pumps and filing FIRs against them. Residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad have reported a lack of fuel at several petrol pumps for two days, with long lines of motorists observed at Pakistan State Oil (PSO) pumps while other pumps were not providing fuel.

Motorists were seen frantically searching for fuel as it was unavailable at many petrol pumps in areas such as Tipu Road, Murree Road, Jhanda Chichi, Kutcherry Chowk, Adiala Road, Pirwadhai, Mall Road Saddar, Rawal Road, Jhelum Road, and others. The long lines of vehicles at petrol pumps also caused traffic congestion throughout the city.

Petrol pump managers, speaking to The News on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that fuel supply had been cut off, with some blaming unknown reasons for the shortage. They warned that if the supply did not resume, motorists could experience severe fuel shortages in the future. Taxi drivers, who rely on daily earnings to support their families, were particularly affected by the situation and expressed strong criticism of the government for failing to provide basic services to the public.

  • Five years jail and arrest without warrant for criticising army and judiciary in new draft bill: Dawn

Five years jail and arrest without warrant for criticising army and judiciary in new draft bill: Dawn

A bill has reportedly been prepared by the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) led government where up to a five-year imprisonment sentence can be given to “whoever scandalises or ridicules the Pakistan Army and judiciary through any medium”, reports Riazul Haq for Dawn.

It is to be noted that the bill is to amend the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC)

The newspaper has reported that the summary and the bill will be forwarded to the federal cabinet soon.

It says that whoever makes, publishes, circulates any statement or disseminates information, through any medium, with an intention to ridicule or scandalise the judiciary, the armed forces or any of their members will be found guilty. And the punishment may extend to five years or with a fine which may go as high up as Rs 1 million or both.

Moreover, it says that the offender will be arrested without a warrant and the offence will be non-bailable and non-compoundable and can only be challenged in a sessions court.

Dawn also reached out to PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi who said that he had not seen the draft but there had to be “some limit” to defaming someone.

“Everywhere in the world there is a defamation law and this does not happen that anyone comes up willy-nilly and says whatever they want,” he was quoted saying by Dawn.

However, later he denied his comments in a tweet as reported by Dawn, and said that he “simply cannot lend support to any draconian legislation”.

“I believe that Pakistan needs defamation laws with financial recourse to protect everyone from unsubstantiated accusations,” he explained.

PML-N’s Rohail Asghar also made it clear that no such laws should be passed by the government as he believed that there should be space for criticism.

Pakistani traders threaten to launch nationwide protests if new taxes imposed

Traders in Pakistan have threatened to launch a nationwide protest in response to the government’s potential imposition of new taxes to meet the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) conditions. The Central Organisation of Traders has called for the government to reduce the salaries of army generals, judges, and parliamentarians instead.

On Saturday, representatives of the Central Organisation of Traders spoke to the media in Islamabad and announced their plan for a protest movement starting on February 13th if the new taxes are introduced. The leaders of the organization warned the government that the current economic situation in the country cannot withstand further taxation of the general public and the trading community.

They expressed dismay that the state of the economy of a nuclear country was in dire straits and the situation was worsening with each passing day, and said that the public should not suffer because of the “flaws or crimes committed by the leaders of this country.”

“Our reaction will be severe if more taxes worth billions of rupees were imposed, as being reported in the media,” Kashif Chaudhry, the organisation’s president, said, asking the stakeholders, including the ruling elites, to make “sane decisions” if they want to improve the economy.

Mr Chaudhry has proposed that the government reduce the expenses of high-level officials such as the President, Prime Minister, legislators, judges, army officers, and bureaucrats. He believes the government should immediately decrease “non-productive expenditures” by half.

The trader representatives have also made demands of the government. They have called for the creation of both short-term and long-term economic policies and for more consistent income tax collection across all sectors, instead of imposing billions of dollars in new taxes.

“I assure the government that the business community was ready to contribute to steering the country out of the current economic crises and we traders are ready to pay fixed taxes,” he said.

Khawaja Salman Siddiqui, the chairman of the organization, criticized Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. According to Siddiqui, Dar was appointed by the PML-N to stabilize the economy and prevent the depreciation of the rupee, but he failed to deliver on his responsibilities.

Mr Siddiqui said putting an artificial cap on the dollar’s rate led to a wide gap between the interbank and open market rates, and despite the demand to remove the cap, Mr Dar “remained stubborn and did not listen to anybody.”

Other speakers called for the implementation of the decision of the Federal Shariat Court to make Pakistan’s economy interest-free to “eradicate exploitation in the system.”

According to Dawn, the speakers also suggested an amnesty program that would allow wealthy individuals to repatriate their foreign wealth. The government could then borrow money from these individuals and provide them with profits instead of taking loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank with unfavorable conditions.

  • Bugatti sells its last gas-powered hypercar for Rs2.97 billion, sets world auction record

Bugatti sells its last gas-powered hypercar for Rs2.97 billion, sets world auction record

At a Wednesday auction in Paris, Bugatti sold its final gas-only supercar for more than $10 million, breaking the previous record for a brand-new vehicle.

The one-of-a-kind Bugatti Chiron Profilée, which was originally a unique development vehicle and was never intended for the market, sold at RM Paris collector auto auction for a bid of $9.5 million. The final selling price, after fees to the auction house, was around Rs2.97 billion ($10.7 million).

The amount paid was significantly higher than the $4.5 million to $6 million that RM Sotheby’s had pegged the car’s value at. According to Hagerty, a business that monitors the market for collector cars, the eight-figure price surpasses past auction sales of new autos.

Bidding for this gleaming blue supercar went so high because it is unique and, in cases like this, collectors “bid knowing they won’t get a second chance,” said John Wiley, manager of valuation and analytics at Hagerty.

According to Bugatti, going from zero to 100 kilometers an hour, or 62 miles per hour in only 2.3 seconds, the Profilée is the fastest-accelerating Chiron variant. Shockingly, it’s capable of up 200 kph, or 124 mph, in 5.5 seconds. Able to reach 236 miles an hour, it also has a higher top speed than the Pur Sport, but still not as high as some other Bugatti models that can reach 300 miles an hour.

The convertible W16 Mistral, unveiled last August, was the French ultra-luxury automaker’s prior announcement that it would be the final gas-powered vehicle it would produce. Only 99 of those cars, each costing at least $5 million, will be produced. According to Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, the parent business of Bugatti, the next high-performance model from Bugatti will be a plug-in hybrid with a different kind of gas engine.

However, it turned out that Bugatti only had one additional gasoline-only vehicle to offer for sale. However, this Bugatti was never meant to be put up for sale.

From late 2020, the Bugatti Chiron Profilée was produced as one of numerous variations of the company’s flagship model, the Chiron. There would only ever be 500 Chirons produced, according to Bugatti. A few variations, including the Chiron Sport, Chiron Pur Sport, and Chiron Super Sport, all with different levels of top speed, acceleration, and cornering aggression, were included in that 500-strong group.

Incredible performance was provided by the Chiron’s turbocharged 16-cylinder engine, which is capable of producing close to 1,600 horsepower, while the Pur Sport added more forceful steering, suspension, and acceleration. However, other buyers were looking for a hybrid product that offered the capabilities of the Pur Sport but with a more relaxed aesthetic.

As a response, Bugatti’s engineers and designers began developing a new Chiron model with Pur Sport-like performance but a more ethereal, fluid appearance. In order to draw in more air to cool the massive engine, the Profilée sports a larger grille and broader front air intakes than the standard Chiron. Additionally, the transmission was altered to have shorter gear ratios for faster acceleration and greater engine speeds.

According to Bugatti, the Profilée is the Chiron model with the fastest acceleration. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph, or 62 mph, in only 2.3 seconds, and from 0 to 200 kph, or 124 mph, in just 5.5 seconds. Its top speed of 236 mph is more than the Pur Sport’s but still lower than several other Bugatti models, some of which are theoretically capable of reaching 300 mph.

The name Profilée refers to a classy teardrop-shaped body style that was employed on some well-known Bugatti automobiles in the 1930s.

‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’: Khan asks workers and supporters to prepare for new movement

Imran Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has on Saturday asked his workers and supporters to prepare for “Jail Bharo Tehreek” (Movement to Fill Jails) across the country.

In a televised address, the former Prime Minister announced the movement as the next step to be taken by the PTI in light of the prevailing political situation that has seen several of its top leaders and allies spend time behind bars.

“We have two options: Considering what they have been doing, we could have gone for a wheel-jam strike and demonstrations — which is one option and a democratic one.”

However, Imran Khan said that because the state of the economy will worsen with a strike, “I ask all my workers, the Pakistani nation and everyone to prepare for the Jail Bharo Tehreek.”

This way, he said, the federal government’s “new hobby” of putting every senior PTI leader in jail will also be fulfilled.

“The entire party and the people should prepare for the Jail Bharo Tehreek”, Imran said. “Whenever I give the signal, we all will get out and get arrested by the authorities.”

Khan claimed his party never committed such atrocities in its tenure as the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government in the centre has.

“Fawad Chaudhry was picked up from home at 3am. What did Shandana Gulzar do that made her a terrorist? As the court gives bail to Sheikh Rasheed, more cases are being filed against him,” the PTI chairman said, insisting that action has been taken against every person who called out the regime change.

The former prime minister said human rights violations have continued since the “imported government” arrived.

“No example can be found for the way Shehbaz Gill was tortured. The effects of the torture are still there,” Khan said.

Speaking about the attempted assassination attack that left him injured, the PTI chairman said he couldn’t get the FIR of his choice registered despite being a former prime minister. However, he said, 60 FIRs were filed against him.

Imran pinned the responsibility of rising terrorism on incumbent Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as he recalled the sacrifices made by the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the war on terror.

“Look at the graph of terrorism and how it came down during the PTI government,” he said. “Why wasn’t there any terrorism when PTI was in the federal government?”

“This is why they (KP public) came out yesterday and thronged the streets in fear that there might be another operation,” he said, adding that countless innocent lives are lost during anti-terror operations.

SRK has always been open about how protective he is towards his children. In an interview with David Letterman, he revealed that he made sure to spend a lot of time with them.

‘If there is one thing I hold against my parents, it’s that they didn’t spend a lot of time with me. Now as a father, I want to be there for my kids as much as possible. That I am going to make sure that I live very long, and I make sure that I keep on living with my kids and never let them feel they don’t have a parent. So any given moment I spend with them, I study with them, I sleep with them, I chat with them, I sort out all their problems, and I hate it when they have boyfriend girlfriend problems.”

  • Fallout of China balloon saga; Blinken postpones visit

United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken has postponed an official visit to China, scheduled to start on Friday, calling an alleged spy balloon over his country an “unacceptable” violation.

Blinken said that the high-altitude surveillance balloon flying over the continental US “created conditions that undermine the purpose of the trip”. He informed China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, in a call Friday morning that he was postponing the trip.

The decision was made after high-level conversations were held between Blinken, President Joe Biden and other top national security officials.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that Biden was advised by military leaders not to shoot down the balloon because of the risk to the safety and security of the people on ground.

China, however, has said that the balloon was a “civilian airship” used mainly for weather research that deviated from its planned course.

  • NO, ScrapFest is not an LGBTQ event

Social media users are demanding a ban on ScrapFest for allegedly promoting homosexuality in Pakistan. The hashtag #BanScrapFest trended on Pakistani Twitter this week, after a recent news report stated that the event is LGBTQ exclusive.

However, Urvah Khan, one of the organsiers of the event, confirmed to The Current said that the show exclusively features artists from minority groups of Pakistan, not just based on gender and sexuality.

Urvah told The Current that ScrapFest (Pakistan) is a performance based music festival showcasing artists from the trans and underground community of Pakistan. Ranging from trans singers/ dancers/ comedians, rappers and hip hop artists from Lyari to musicians and more.

“This show exclusively features artists from minority groups of Pakistan. Not just based on gender and sexuality but also featuring artists who continue to face discrimination based on race and class”

While talking about the reasons why the event has been shifted to a virtual venue, Khan said, “The event has been shifted virtually to ensure the physical safety of our artists and audiences. Regardless, by going virtual, now the whole world will be able to see the talent, drive, passion and commitment our artists and communities hold.”

ScrapFest is a platform created by an artist for artists. Artists who don’t get paid opportunities to showcase their art respectfully come together on this platform to celebrate one another.

“ScrapFest in Pakistan represents the trans and underground community here. I find it deplorable that when finally the chance to perform for a mainstream audience is given to indigenous, transgender and underground artists in order to come out of an economy of crime, abuse and violence; suddenly folks here are branding this event as such,” she said while talking about the criticism the event is being subjected to.

“When I am in Canada, I belong to multiple minority groups myself. I do and will continue to support, empower and create performance based opportunities for any artists belonging to any marginalized community.”

Talking exclusively to The Current, Dr Mehrub, who is hosting the event said that she has no clue how and why the event is being branded as LGBTQ exclusive.
Mehrub continued by saying that she does not feel anything about the hate the event is getting because it has become a norm

    .
She said that she and other transgenders are exhausted at this point. Mehrub further said that “i don’t think that the event was very well managed,” adding that if an event is including minorities and sexual minorities in the lineup one needs to understand the politics going behind it. “You need to follow certain measures and protocols,” she said.

  • ‘Mujhe gaali dega, mai uskay jawab mein thapar maaroonga usko’: PPP’s Kaira’s argument with journalist Kazmi

‘Mujhe gaali dega, mai uskay jawab mein thapar maaroonga usko’: PPP’s Kaira’s argument with journalist Kazmi

Adviser to Prime Minister (PM) for Kashmir & Gilgit Baltistan, Qamar Zaman Kaira, in a verbal argument with journalist Athar Kazmi said that no one has the right to verbally abuse him.

Speaking on Samaa News’ programme, ‘Meray Sawal with Mansoor Ali Khan’, Kaira said, “If someone verbally abuses me, I will slap them in return.”

The panel of guests, which included Athar Kazmi, was discussing how families should be excluded from political criticism. Kaira argued that it was highly inappropriate to drag families into the criticism. Kazmi went on to say that it is inappropriate but not a crime.

Kaira shrugged the point off, telling Kazmi not to become partisan while following someone. Kazmi added that one should be patient in arguments, to which Kaira responded, “I do not give anyone the right to abuse me.”

Kazmi then posed a question, asking where it was written in the law or in the constitution that one could file a case against someone for verbally abusing them? Anchorperson Mansoor Ali Khan interjected and said it was possible.

Kaira responded, “Defamation can be both civil and criminal. An FIR followed by an arrest can happen in such a case.”
