  • Apple may allow third-party app stores on iOS to make the iPhone more open

Apple may allow third-party app stores on iOS to make the iPhone more open

To meet EU standards outlined in the Digital Markets and Services Act, Apple intends significant improvements to iOS and other services.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple will redesign its platform to “open up key elements,” allowing users of the iPhone and iPad to download applications from third party app stores and websites.

Only the 27 European Union member states are expected to experience the changes, which would pave the way for a potential expansion of the services to other areas.

As corporations have time until 2024 to completely comply with the Digital Markets Act, plans for the changes are probably going to launch with iOS 17 in 2023. The implementation also includes adding new web browsing engines to iPhones and iPads as well as expanding access to the NFC chip, camera, Find My Network, and AirTag.

Gurman noted that even if developers choose not to make their apps available through the App Store, Apple still intends to charge them.

Both the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act aim to enhance privacy protection, foster fair competition, and do away with some intrusive targeted advertising. The first act, which is meant to provide improved interoperability with less significant competing services, is where Apple’s activities mostly come under.

Let’s say Cupertino chooses not to follow the regulation when it becomes effective on January 1, 2024. In that situation, regulators may impose a penalty equal to 10 per cent of the entire global turnover, up to 20 per cent for recurrent infractions.

  • Gas supply to industrial sites suspended for two days

Gas supply to industrial sites suspended for two days

The gas crisis has grown worse in the economic hub of Pakistan as the duration of gas load-shedding in Karachi industries was extended for up to two days.

The industrial sites in Karachi will be facing two-day gas load-shedding instead of one.

According to the information obtained, all industrial facilities and captive power plants in Karachi will not be supplied gas for two days.

From December 17 to December 19, seven industrial zones and captive power plants were instructed to refrain from using Sui Southern Gas Company’s (SSGC) gas supplies on Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to conducting unannounced raids on all industrial sites, the SSGC surveillance teams will also take legal action against those who violate the rules.

Imtiaz Shaikh, the energy minister for Sindh, criticised the gas load-shedding on December 13 and claimed that although the province is generating more natural gas than it needs, it is still being denied its legitimate right.

Imtiaz Shaikh, the energy minister, demanded that Sindh be given preference over other parts of the country in the provision of natural gas.

“We will take the matter to court if required,” Sindh’s energy minister said. “We are also considering raising the issue in the Council on Common Interest (CCI),” he said.

He said that the chief minister had discussed Sindh’s case regarding the gas issue during discussions between the state and federal governments. He expressed hope that the prime minister will pay attention to the situation.

The provincial minister stated that when additional petrol is provided to the province, Karachi’s industry will resume operation.

The most natural gas-producing province in Pakistan, Sindh, is now experiencing a severe natural gas shortage for home, industrial, and commercial customers.

Police chief advises Karachiites not to resist robbers during mugging

Additional Inspector General of Police Jawed Alam Odho has advised the residents of Karachi to not resist robbers if they are being held up.

The police chief’s statement has come forward during a press briefing in Karachi on the killing of a young man in a mugging incident.

On Thursday, two robbers shot dead a 21-year-old student — Bilal Nasir — of the NED University of Engineering and Technology.

During the mugging bid, Bilal succeeded in getting hold of one of the robbers, but the robber opened fire from close range. The youth was shot in his chest and leg, killing him on the spot.

Police have managed to arrest one suspect in Bilal’s killing—Nizamuddin. According to Odho, the suspect is a teenager, an Afghan who has been illegally living in Karachi.

Odho remarked that this year, the situation of robbery, dacoity, and street crime had remained “stable” with an overall increase of 7 per cent.

He also said that in 2022, 518 people were severely injured or killed during street crimes. However, in 2021, the figure was 522.

  • ‘I am as much part of PPP as Miftah Ismail is of PML-N’: Mustafa Khokhar

‘I am as much part of PPP as Miftah Ismail is of PML-N’: Mustafa Khokhar

Former senator, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, calling the coalition government a “hybrid 2.0” setup announced quitting Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) after differences arose between him and the leadership over his stance on government policies.

“I am as much part of PPP as Miftah Ismail is of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Let’s see where I head next from here,” Khokhar said while speaking on Geo News’ programme “Naya Pakistan”.

“I wish the best for Peoples Party. I feel honoured to serve as a member of the party, but I am no longer a part of it,” he confirmed.

Khokhar said if the party’s members do not talk about ongoing issues, then it would look like it’s more of a “monarchy than a political party”.

Criticising the current coalition government, Khokhar said that what happened during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) tenure when Imran Khan was the Prime Minister, continues to happen in the present government as well.

“We managed what happened at Sindh House. [Some were out of free will], and some were forced. But whatever happened in [Khan’s] tenure is still happening today,” he lamented.

Taking a jibe at the incumbent government, Khokhar called it “hybrid 2.0” and noted that it was “resorting to the wrong moves” in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Azam Swati’s case — who is being transferred from one jail to another over his controversial tweets.

Khokhar formally resigned as a senator on November 10, stressing that he would try hard to maintain his “independence”.

  • Dissolution of assemblies: CM Elahi goes to Rawalpindi ahead of Imran’s date announcement

Dissolution of assemblies: CM Elahi goes to Rawalpindi ahead of Imran’s date announcement

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi on Friday air-dashed to Rawalpindi and returned to Lahore after a brief meeting with an “important personality”.

CM Elahi traveled to Rawalpindi on Friday evening where he held an important meeting. After returning to Lahore at night, he held consultations with his party leaders and also took Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain into confidence, reports Geo News.

It is pertinent to mention that the development comes just hours before the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s announcement of the date for the dissolution of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) today.

According to the media outlet, after the meeting in Rawalpindi, Elahi opposed dissolving the assembly and suggested to Imran Khan not to take the decision in haste.

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Moonis Elahi also met Imran Khan before “the Rawalpindi meeting”. He told the PTI leader that the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government can victimise the PTI and PML-Q leadership if the assemblies are dissolved.

If Elahi doesn’t dissolve the Punjab Assembly, the PTI chief Imran Khan would be left with the option of his party’s lawmakers resigning from the assembly.

On the other hand, Dawn reports that PML-Q said it would remain PTI’s political ally in the next general election, but demanded 25 to 30 seats across the Gujrat division, parts of south Punjab and Sialkot district.

Khan will announce the dissolution of both provincial assemblies in the much-awaited video-link address at Liberty Roundabout in Lahore today. CM Elahi and KP CM Mahmood Khan would be personally present in the public congregations.

  • Russia to sell cheap crude oil to Pakistan, Musadik Malik reiterates

Russia to sell cheap crude oil to Pakistan, Musadik Malik reiterates

State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik on Friday reiterated that Russia will provide Pakistan with crude oil at discounted rates.

Speaking at a press conference, Malik claimed that Russia will offer Pakistan crude at a discount, just like the energy giant does for other nations across the globe.

“It (the discount) could be greater than what others receive,” he added.

The remarks come a day after PBS Newshour journalist Amna Nawaz interviewed Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who said: “As far as Russia is concerned, we aren’t pursuing or receiving any discounted energy, but we are facing an extremely difficult economic situation.”

In response to a question on the $60 per barrel limit on Russian seaborne oil imposed by the Group of Seven and the EU in connection to Russia’s war in Ukraine, Bilawal said, “Up until now we actually haven’t received nor are we getting any oil from Russia.”

“As far as discounted rates, no one is giving discounted rates for oil these days,” Bilawal also told reporters at the United Nations. “That’s not a reality. It is true that we’re actively pursuing ways and means to address the energy shortfalls and difficulties we’re facing in Pakistan.”

Malik, who had earlier in the month claimed that Russia will supply cheaper oil, revealed on Friday that Pakistani refineries could process Russian crude, namely Siberian Light and Ural Light. Islamabad’s inability to obtain oil from Moscow is attributed to Pakistan’s refineries’ capacity to handle Russian crude.

“Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL), owned by Pakistan State Oil (PSO), told us that they could utilise up to 50 per cent light crude of Russian origin. Similarly, PARCO has told us that they could utilise up to 30 per cent of Russian crude.”

“Whereas, Cnergyico, the third largest oil refinery in the country, could not only process these two (Siberian Light and Ural Light) crudes but also heavy crudes as well.”

“We will get these light crudes from Russia on a discount,” added Malik.

Discounts on finished goods, such as gasoline and petrol, will also be discussed, the state minister added. The Russian delegation is expected to visit Pakistan in 2023.

According to DAWN, in the second week of January, there will be an Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) meeting between Pakistan and Russia. During the conference, the Russian energy minister is likely to visit.

In connection to the TAPI project, which “may offer us with 1.3bcf of gas,” Malik continued, the administration has also reestablished contacts with Turkmenistan.

“A special strategic cell has been established in the Ministry to follow up these projects,” he said.

On liquid natural gas (LNG), Malik said the government is working with Azerbaijan on a gas purchase framework agreement, which is being drafted. “Under this framework, we would have a government-to-government level agreement with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, largely known as SOCAR,” he said.

“SOCAR will provide us with distressed cargoes on a monthly basis, and the Government of Pakistan would have the option to purchase these cargoes at given rates or not. “This will help us increase our gas supply,” he said.

The minister said that SOCAR has already offered Pakistan LNG cargo for December 14. “However, we were unable to purchase it as both our terminals were not available,” he said.

Additionally, the government is still working to come to an arrangement with the UAE that would allow for the purchase of diesel and petrol cargoes.

“I want to reiterate that the policies of the current government are meant to alleviate hardships of poverty-ridden masses,” said Malik.

He said that despite a 10 per cent yearly loss in gas reserves, the government is giving its people more gas this year than it did the year before. ”We will have an additional cargo of gas in the coming months of January and February, in comparison to the same period in 2022,” he said.

“We are also bringing in 20,000 tons LPG in addition to facilitate our consumers.”

Sindh gang trap Lahori boys through ‘love calls’ by woman, kidnaps them

A Sindh based gang has honey trapped Lahori men through phone calls, lured them to Sindh before kidnapping them and asking ransom from their families, reports SAMAA.

The group first selects their targets who are then are approached by women to start a romantic relationship with them.

The women then call the victims to meet them, eventually succeeding in luring the unwary callers to northern Sindh catchment areas, where even the police are afraid to go.
Once captured, they would demand a ransom from their family in exchange for their release.

Authorities in Punjab have now issued a warning to young people to stay away from such calls, especially those who live in Lahore and other parts of Punjab.
