Mahira Khan, Nabeel Qureshi lash out at shopping app for illegally selling their film for PKR 20

Feature films Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad and London Nahi Jaunga received commercial and critical success at the box office on Eid-ul-Azha. However now these successful films have become a victim of piracy, a widely and eternally decried practice affecting film and entertainment businesses worldwide.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is LNJ-QAZ-daraz-cover-01-696x391.jpg

The pirated version of these films is being sold on Pakistan’s biggest online shopping website, Daraz.

Actor Mahira Khan and director Nabeel Qureshi took to their Twitter handles to express their shock and anger on the app’s stint. Nabeel even announced that he will pursue the legal route

Theor film was being sold with a meager price tag in the name of “Azadi Sale”.

Innumerable copies of both films have been sold on the website of the shopping giant, as is evident from the comments section of the website. And it is surprising that such a huge platform would commit a such blatant violation of Pakistan’s piracy laws.

It is pertinent to mention that Daraz is owned by the multi-billion dollar international giant AliExpress, and that makes AliExpress equally involved in this case.

  • Govt lifts import ban on luxury goods with heavy duties

Govt lifts import ban on luxury goods with heavy duties

On the recommendation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Miftah Ismail, announced lifting of the ban on the import of luxury and non-essential goods on Thursday. He added, however, that the Regulatory Duties (RDs) would be increased significantly to deter the import of such items.

“It is requirement of the international community that there should be no ban so we are lifting ban on all products. But simultaneously the duties I am going to impose would not let these commodities to enter into Pakistan as finished goods,” according to Finance Minister.

According to the minister, RDs would be increased three times, or to the highest degree conceivable, and may potentially increase by up to 400 to 600 per cent or more.

Keeping in view his duty to offer basic and vital goods to the nation’s citizens, he said that the prime minister was against the importation of luxury goods, according to APP.

To comply with the IMF, international agreements, and World Trade Organization, he claimed the restriction had been lifted. Although import taxes would be applied on expensive food, clothing, and other items, anyone still wishing to import is free to do so.

He said that the available resources will be used to give the people of the country grain, wheat, cotton, and edible oil rather than iPhones or fancy cars. He claimed that Pakistan did not have a lot of money to spend on the import of opulent things.

The finance minister stated in response to a question that the levies on completely built-up (CBU) automobiles, appliances, imported meat and salmon, as well as other luxuries, would increase. He explained that the government’s goal was to limit imports while adhering to the requirements of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international accords, not to promote the import of such goods.

On the other hand, since the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits are not considered luxury items, their import will resume without any caveats. However, its positive impact on the sales figures will be seen after a few months.

According to the finance minister, Pakistan and the fund have been in lengthy negotiations. The IMF board is due to convene on August 29 and will decide whether to accept Pakistan’s programme because it has already complied with all requirements and performed all necessary preliminary steps.

He said that friendly nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates helped arrange the $4 billion cash for strengthening the nation’s foreign exchange reserves. China also agreed to roll over $2 billion in loans, and Saudi Arabia agreed to roll over its own assets. According to him, the finance need has been satisfied.

According to the minister, the requirement for the electricity tariff has also been met, thus there won’t be any non-funding subsidies.

In addition, he said that the government was expected to get Rs42 billion from retail tax, but when the decision was reversed, the objective was cut to Rs27 billion, and the Rs15 billion shortfall will be filled by increasing the tax on tobacco and cigarettes.

Moreover, taxes on tobacco and cigarettes will bring in Rs36 billion. Tier-2 cigarettes’ tax will rise from Rs1,850 to Rs2,050 per 1,000 cigarettes, while Tier-1 cigarettes’ tax would rise from Rs5,900 to Rs6,500 per 1,000 cigarettes. The green leaf Cess has also been raised from Rs10 per kg to Rs380.

According to Bloomberg’s report, the Pakistani Rupee was the best performing currency in the world during August, and the Pakistan Stock Exchange continued to be the top performing stock market in the world, therefore the minister believed that the country’s economy was strengthening.

The minister stated that the government was implementing a policy of self-reliance in order to stay within its means, reduce the fiscal deficit, and raise imports to a level equal to exports plus remittance in order to control the current account deficit.

‘Give me back my right to live,’ Indian Muslim woman Bilkis Bano fearful after release of 11 men who gang-raped her

Bilkis Bano, an Indian Muslim woman who was gang-raped in the 2002 Gujarat riots, said that her peace has been taken away after the Gujarat government released her 11 rapists on Monday. Her rapists were released on August 15, i.e. Independence Day of India. They were convicted in 2008.

She has requested the government to reverse the decision.

“How can justice for any woman end like this? I trusted the highest courts in our land. I trusted the system, and I was learning slowly to live with my trauma. The release of these convicts has taken from me my peace and shaken my faith in justice,” said Bilkis in her statement.

“My sorrow and my wavering faith are not for myself alone but for every woman who is struggling for justice in courts,” she added.

“No one enquired about my safety and well-being, before taking such a big and unjust decision… Give me back my right to live without fear and in peace. Please ensure that my family and I are kept safe.”

    What happened with Bilkis Bano?

At the age of 21, Bilkis Bano was five months pregnant when she was brutally gang-raped in 2002 in Gujarat.

The 2002 Gujarata riots are considered one of the worst anti-Muslim riots in India that saw nearly 2,000 people — mostly Muslims — killed.

On March 3, 2002, Bilkis and her family members were attacked by about 30 people armed with sickles, swords, and sticks. Among the attackers were the 11 accused men.

Bilkis, her mother, and three other women were raped and brutally assaulted. Seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family, including her three-year-old daughter, were also murdered.

Bilkis is now in her 40s.

‘Not liable to answer or provide information to you,’ Khan tells FIA

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday (August 17) asked the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to take back the notice sent to him in the prohibited funding case in two days, further stating that he would take legal action against the organisation.

“Neither am I liable to answer to you nor is it liable on me to provide information to you. If notice is not taken back in two days, then I will take legal action against you,” said Khan to FIA.

“ECP [Election Commission of Pakistan] did not give a decision but issued a report. ECP cannot order FIA or any other organisation based on this report,” said the PTI chief. He added that the FIA does not have the authority to act under the Political Parties Order 2002.

“The notice issued is also contrary to the FIA Act. Supreme Court has declared the ECP as an administrative institution in several decisions,” said Khan, adding that the ECP is neither a court nor a tribunal.

FIA sought records from Khan regarding the total funds provided to PTI by national and international companies, and business firms.
