85 percent of Balochistan is without clean drinking water: report

According to the provincial health department, the first case of cholera was identified in Balochistan on April 17th and since then 2,856 cases and six deaths have been reported so far in the province.

A report, released by Geo News‘ Muhummad Ejaz Khan on the current crisis faced by Balochistan suggests that due to infection of cholera in the region, local health sources are rubbishing the official tally. They claim that at least two dozen people are dead due to the disease.

Senator Sarfraz Bugti shared a video of locals in which they can be seen protesting in the scorching heat. In the tweet, he urged the concerned authorities to take action.

It has been reported by the media outlet that residents of Dera Bugti (a district in Balochistan) are being forced to drink dirty water because of the unavailability of clean water. Last week, in the district six people, including women and very young children, died within hours of being infected with cholera.

Dr Muhammad Azam Bugti, the district health officer in Dera Bugti, revealed to the media outlet that local people and animals use the same water ponds for drinking, which has become a major cause of the epidemic.

“Over 85% of Balochistan’s population is deprived of clean drinking water,” he said. “This at a time when billions of rupees are being allocated every year for water supply schemes in the province”, he added.

Chief Minister (CM) Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo has directed the department of public health and Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has also ordered emergency relief measures.

Several demonstrations this month were also held in Quetta and other areas of Dera Bugti to demand that the government provide clean drinking water. According to Geo, in the long run, the provincial government will need to set up a research cell to study the epidemic which has now firmly rooted itself in the province.

PML-N supporter, PTI dissident leader Raja Riaz becomes opposition leader to PML-N led govt

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) dissident leader Raja Riaz Ahmad has become the Leader of the Opposition in the lower house of Parliament, with the support of 16 lawmakers, following the withdrawal of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q)’s Moonis Elahi.

Speaker National Assembly (NA) Raja Pervaiz Ashraf issued notification of Riaz as being elected as the Opposition leader.

Earlier, Moonis Elahi withdrew his candidature as the Opposition leader, paving the way for a one-on-one contest between Ghous Bakhsh Mahar and Riaz.

In 2016, Raja Riaz quit the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) after he decided to join PTI.

Riaz, who switched sides from PTI during the vote of no-confidence against the then Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, had previously announced that he would contest the next general election on the ticket of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The Opposition leader’s seat fell vacant after Shehbaz Sharif was elected prime minister following the ouster of Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion vote.

  • Ban, what ban? Local alternatives to your favourite imported products

Ban, what ban? Local alternatives to your favourite imported products

Usually when we hear the word “imported”, the first that comes to our mind is good quality products and when we hear the word “local”, we think of not so great, local quality products. However, more small- to medium-enterprises are now making better quality products at low costs. The government yesterday announced that luxury or non-essential commodities have been completely banned in the country to help the nation emerge from its financial crisis. After the announcement, many are wondering how will they get their hands on their favourite imported products.

The Current has complied a list of local products that you can as alternative to imported products.

    Mobile phones

The production of mobile phones by local manufacturing plants has more than doubled against the import in the country during 2021. You will not be able to get your hands on Apple Iphones but you thankfully there are many locally made options, like Vivo, Techno, and Oppo among many others.

    Home appliances

Major appliances, also known as white goods, comprise major household appliances and may include: air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, drying cabinets, freezers, refrigerators, kitchen stoves, water heaters, washing machines, trash compactors, and microwave ovens

    Sanitary ware

Sanitary ware is an umbrella term that refers to sanitary appliances found in bathrooms and kitchens. There are local alternatives although they don’t last as long as the imported ones. But then apparently the ban is also temporary so perhaps wait before you remodel that bathroom or kitchen.

    Tissue paper

I think it goes without saying that Rose Petal is the household name in Pakistan when it comes to tissue paper.

    Shampoos

We have personally heard some good reviews about Conatural’s shampoo. In addition, you can easily find local Sunsilk, Lifebuoy among others in local shops

    Pasta

Bake Parlor Pasta is a good alternative to international brands.

    Juices

Imported juices have also been banned but have we don’t have to worry as we our own local brand for juices. Who does not love to drink Shezan mango juice in this weather? And Nestle fruit juices are also locally produced.

  • ‘Pakistan is likely to receive $1 billion from Saudi Arabia’: PM Shehbaz

‘Pakistan is likely to receive $1 billion from Saudi Arabia’: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that Pakistan is likely to receive an investment worth $1 billion from Saudi Arabia.

During his speech, the PM asked businessmen to speak about their problems and said: “We need to analyse the economic situation with patience.”

The premier then requested the business community to provide solutions as the local currency has lately been fluctuating significantly against the United States (US) dollar. “I am not here for political point-scoring,” PM Shehbaz clarified.

“When I took the oath on April 11, the rate of United States (US) dollar against the Pakistani currently was 189,” said Shehbaz.

“The Rs. 60-65 increase in the rupee value against the greenback wasn’t the coalition government’s fault,” Shehbaz said, adding that when the former government speculated that they would be ousted, they reduced the petroleum prices despite a price hike in the international market, thus going against the conditions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“During the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) tenure loans worth Rs22,000 billion were taken which shows an 80 per cent increase from 2018,” he said, adding that “powerful echelons” in the country supported their “favourite” person.

Shedding light on his decision regarding the ban imposed on the import of luxury and non-essential items, PM Shehbaz said that while he banned the import of certain items for some time, he did not increase the duties because the “elite class would have still purchased imported items after paying duties.”

The premier said: “Pakistan cannot afford to purchase gas worth $20 billion; we have to slowly and gradually move towards solar and wind energy.”

“If green energy comes to Pakistan, we will save Pakistan’s funds,” said PM Shehbaz.

The premier arrived in Karachi earlier today on a day-long visit.

  • Fighter-jet gifting businessman Mohammad Zahoor and a 1990s scandal

Fighter-jet gifting businessman Mohammad Zahoor and a 1990s scandal

Pakistani-British businessman and former Kyiv Post owner Mohammad Zahoor has made headlines again, with his decision to buy fighter jets for Ukraine. But this is not the only time Zahoor was the talk of the town. Earlier in the 1990s he was also probed for fraud and misappropriation of funds and later, his name appeared in the Panama Papers pertaining to Ukraine. In 2015, Ukraine’s weekly magazine, Focus had marked Zahoor’s net worth at $500 million.

On May 18th 2020, news broke in the cybersphere that Mohammad Zahoor had bought two fighter jets for Ukraine, to help in their war against Russia. On Wednesday Ukraine’s TSN reported that Zahoor’s wife, Ukrainian singer Kamaliya Zahoor appeared in the program ‘Morning with Ukraine’ and announced that her husband gave two fighter jets to Ukraine to help fight the war with Russia which has now entered its 12th week.

Formerly, Zahoor was a formidable figure in the Ukranian media. Born in 1955, at the age of 19 he first headed to Ukraine on a Pakistan steel mills scholarship to study metallurgy after which he returned back to his homeland only to go back when the Iron Curtain fell in 1991.The same year, he invested in steel and set up ISTIL Group – originally a producer and trader of steel and steel products, ISTIL has now diversified its portfolio, holding investments in growth industries and sectors across the world.

However, back in 1998, Mohammad Zahoor turned up as a principal target of an investigation linking Ukrainian politicians to a fraud investigation involving the United Energy Systems of Ukraine, which has been long drawn out for almost 15 years now. During the investigation it was discovered that two companies owned by Zahoor appeared to have a documentary trail connecting them to the fraudulent Ukrainian politicians. This was extensively reported by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

One of these companies, Metalsrussia Group Ltd, was later renamed to ISTIL Group. And the authorized capital of the company as per a certificate of incumbency attached here was $5 million. Another one of his companies South East Asia Metal Limited owned a majority stake in one of the oldest metallurgic enterprises in southeastern Ukraine, the Donetsk metallurgical plant.

Eventually the police case against him was dropped for a lack of evidence but Zahoor’s name was listed among two dozen individuals related to Ukraine who were revealed in the hoard of documents called the Panama Papers in 2016.

He was also involved in mobilizing funds for the aid and resettlement of Ukrainian refugees and is also currently constructing a £1m housing project in Germany.

  • ‘Lotay washroom kay elawa kisi kaam kay nahi rahay’: PTI celebrates ECP decision

‘Lotay washroom kay elawa kisi kaam kay nahi rahay’: PTI celebrates ECP decision

The Election Commission Pakistan (ECP) on Friday declared 25 dissident members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) de-seated while announcing its verdict in a case pertaining to the dissident members of the Punjab Assembly (MPAs).

In a unanimous verdict, ECP announced that the MPAs will be defected from the party by voting in favour of Hamza Shehbaz, which means that the election that got Hamza Shehbaz the CM seat might not be valid. The reference against PTI dissidents who voted for Hamza Shehbaz in the election of Punjab chief minister was sent by Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

Former Planning Minister and senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Umar on Friday called out the de-seated members of the party and said that ‘lotay washroom kay elawa kisi kaam kay nahi rahay’. [Lotay are now only good for use in the washroom].

Speaking to journalists outside ECP Umar congratulated the nation saying “another chapter of heinous politics has closed today”. “Some of the political parties have used politics for businesses as they are involved in horse-trading,” Umar said, adding that these people [the current leadership] come into power by investing money and earn more by misusing their power.

In the election for the chief minister’s slot on April 16, 2022, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz got 197 votes as opposed to the required number of 186 in the House of 371, meaning the support of PTI dissidents was key to his victory.

Journalist Majid Nizami in his report said, “As per the rules of the Punjab Assembly (PA), the chief minister is elected with a simple majority, therefore 186 votes out of the 371-seat assembly. But if no candidate secures the votes of a majority of the total membership for the assembly in the first round then the second round of voting is held. In this round, the member who secures the most votes, from amongst the members present that day, will win.”

PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz reacting to the news said, “No matter what PTI does, the dream of snatching Punjab from the tiger will be shattered.”

Taliban orders TV presenters to cover their faces on air, Twitter protests

Taliban authorities issued a decree on Wednesday, ordering female Afghan TV presenters and other women on screen to cover their faces while appearing on air.

The Afghan spokesman of the Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue announced that it will be mandatory for all women in the country to cover their faces in public, including those who appear on the screen. The new decree will take effect from 21 May, reports Reuters.

One female Afghan journalist working for a local TV station in Kabul told BBC, “They are putting indirect pressure on us to stop us presenting on TV.”

“How can I read the news with my mouth covered? I don’t know what to do now but I must work, I am the breadwinner of my family,” she added.

The spokesman referred to the ruling as “advice” as it is not clear what will happen to anyone who fails to comply. “Based on information received by Tolo news, the order has been issued to all media outlets in Afghanistan.”

The decision is being widely criticised on Twitter, many people calling it another step by the Taliban to promote extremism.

‘ISPR did not interview Hafeez Shaikh for caretaker prime minister’: Journalist Nadeem Malik

“The ISPR is saying we have not interviewed anyone nor contacted Hafeez Shaikh. It’s not our work to appoint a caretaker prime minister. He was quoting the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
