  • Uruguay’s Luis Suárez is retiring from international football

Uruguay’s Luis Suárez is retiring from international football

Uruguayan star footballer Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football.

The 37-year-old striker confirmed during a press conference yesterday that Saturday’s qualifying match against Paraguay will be the last match of his international career.

The Former Liverpool and Barcelona striker is the top goal-scorer for Uruguay, scoring 69 goals in 143 appearances.

In a press conference, the former Barcelona star said, “I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, and I think it’s a good time to retire. When I play my last match with the national team, I want to be calm, I will be as excited to play the last match as I was when I played the first match for Uruguay in 2007.”

He has played nine major international tournaments for Uruguay and sparked major controversy twice.

In the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, Luis Suarez was sent off for a goal-line header in the last minute of extra time to prevent Ghana from advancing to the semi-finals. However, Uruguay won this match, and Luis Suarez is still intensely disliked in Ghana. After this match, the Ghanaian players did not shake hands with Suarez.

The second major controversy came in the 2014 FIFA World Cup match between Uruguay and Italy when he bit the Italian defender Chiellini on the shoulder. He was immediately expelled from the World Cup.

Luis is linked with American club Inter Miami, where he plays forward alongside his Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.

  • Khalil ur Rehman Qamar’s honey trap suspects in judicial custody

Khalil ur Rehman Qamar’s honey trap suspects in judicial custody

Judge Khalid Arshad has ruled over nine suspects in Khalil ur Rehman Qamar’s honey trap case.

The case dates back to July 15, 2024, when Qamar, a controversial drama writer, was allegedly kidnapped and robbed in Lahore. He reported to the police on July 21 after his rescue, an alleged release after a ransom payment.

According to Qamar’s lawyer, he was invited to a woman’s place – Amna Arooj – for a discussion on a drama project when he was said to have been kidnapped by armed men.

Amna’s lawyer, however, argues a seemingly differing version of events, claiming Qamar’s manager first professionally contacted her, only to ultimately make it personal, after which Qamar allegedly made demands for sexual acts.

He further added that Qamar, apparently intoxicated, persuaded her to engage physically with him or he would blackmail her by outing her fake nude photos.

Hasan Shah reportedly orchestrated the kidnapping and made the videos of the two that went viral on social media, but the evidence to date appears limited by the officers.

Amna Arooj claims she was tortured by the police and that that they have falsely labelled the events a honey trap case.

The victim was identified as Muhammad Farooq, son of Mushtaq Ahmed, a resident of village Kadiala who was in police custody on charge of motorcycle theft.

He was found dead in the lock-up. His family has alleged that he was in the custody of the police for the last many days and that police tortured him to death during the interrogation. They outright rejected police claims of suicide.

On August 31 (Saturday), after Fajr’s prayers, a constable checked the lock-up and found Farooq had committed suicide by tying hanging. He added that Farooq had confessed to stealing 11 motorcycles. Police recovered four motorcycles from him, while seven were yet to be recovered.

District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Naveed Malik took notice of the death of the suspect in police lock-up and sought forensic analysis and a judicial inquiry.

Government employees banned from sharing political views on social media

Pakistan’s government has banned its employees from sharing political or religious opinions with the media and on social media platforms.

The Establishment Division has reportedly issued an office memorandum for government employees. According to the rules, no government employee can speak on any media platform without the government’s permission.

The employees are also not allowed to share official documents or information with unrelated employees, citizens, or the press.

The public servants cannot express opinions and facts on the media or social media, which may affect the government’s reputation.

The memorandum also highlights that government institutions have been ordered to actively monitor and remove objectionable content from their social media platforms. All federal secretaries, additional secretaries, heads of departments, and chief secretaries are expected to ensure the implementation of the directives.
