Gloria Jeans and La Montana closed due to court order

A month after the closure of Monal Restaurant, the Ministry of Climate Change and Pakistan Environment Protection Agency issued notices to two other hilltop eateries, La Montana and Gloria Jeans, to immediately stop operating in the National Park.

The restaurants were established without environmental approvals while the managements didn’t provide plans for solid waste management, sewerage water, and drinking water supply despite several notices.

“The Islamabad High Court, in its orders dated January 11, 2021, observed that protection of ecosystems and natural habitat is a constitutional obligation of the state, its institutions, and public dignitaries,” it stated. “The destruction of the national park is violative of the fundamental rights of the people of Pakistan and saving it from harm is the inviolable duty of the State.”

    The law permits:

    • Immediate to stoppage, preventing, lessening or controlling the discharge, emission, disposal, handling, act or omission, or to minimize or remedy the adverse environmental effect.

    • Action to restore the environment to the condition existing prior to such discharge, disposal, handling, act or omission, or as close to such condition as may be reasonable in the circumstances, to the satisfaction of the Federal Agency or Provincial Agency.

Last month, the Islamabad High Court ordered authorities to seal Islamabad’s Monal Restaurant.

The National Park’s land belongs to the state and no commercial activities can be carried out here, the court ruled.

Attorney General of Pakistan denies filing reference against Islamabad judge in Mohsin Baig case

Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Khalid Javed Khan has denied filing a reference against Islamabad’s Additional Session Judge Zafar Iqbal over his verdict in journalist Mohsin Baig’s case.

Speaking on Geo News programme ‘Naya Pakistan’, the AGP said that the government is not going to file a reference against Zafar Iqbal.

AGP Khalid Javed was of the view that a review petition can be filed against the verdict but not a reference.

References cannot be filed based on a judge’s verdicts, nor should be unless evidence or appellate court decision proves the judge’s misconduct, added Khalid Javed.

On Thursday, the government decided to file a reference against Zafar Iqbal for declaring the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) raid illegal at senior journalist Mohsin Baig’s home.

Advocate General (AG) Islamabad Niazullah Niazi met Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and briefed him about the case hearing.

Niazullah Niazi said that a reference would be filed against the judge soon. He said that Mohsin Baig had pointed a gun at FIA and police officials besides threatening the on-duty officers. “Being a media person does not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.”

AG Islamabad further stated that PM Imran Khan has said that no one is above the law.

“Everyone is equal before the law. Constructive criticism is beneficial for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government,” said PM Khan.

Brad Pitt sues Angelina Jolie for selling her shares without his consent

Brad Pitt is suing ex-wife Angelina Jolie, accusing her of illegally selling off her share of their French estate, Château Miraval.

Pitt alleges they had agreed that neither of them would sell their share of the Chateau where they married in 2014 and its profitable vineyard without agreement from the other party.

It is reported that Jolie sold off the venue to Russian businessman Yuri Shelfer despite “Pitt’s passion” for the property.

Jolie, 46, and Pitt, 58, bought the estate in 2008 for $28.4 million.
