  • Baby on the way for Sarah and Falak?

Baby on the way for Sarah and Falak?

Falak Shabir has left fans confused after he shared an illustration of a woman carrying a baby and her husband worried about it.

“This is the beauty of a relationship! Subhan Allah,” Falak captioned the photo.

While Falak did not explain his post further, many are convinced that this is a pregnancy announcement from the couple.

Sarah had earlier been hospitalised due to ill health. Her manager had confirmed to The Current that the actor has contracted typhoid due to which she had to be admitted to the hospital.

Later in a short video clip, Khan had informed her fans that she has returned home from the hospital and is doing better.

Indian govt greenlights visa issuance for Pakistan team for T20 World Cup

The Government of India has approved the request to issue visas to the Pakistan cricket team and journalists for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place from October to November this year.

According to details, although visas for the Pakistan cricket team have been sorted, it isn’t clear whether fans can travel across the border to watch the matches.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI’s) apex council has been told by Board secretary Jay Shah following “government assurances”.

Shah informed the council of the same in a video conference meeting held on Friday where it was also decided that the mega-event will be staged across nine venues with Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium hosting the final.

“The visa issue of Pakistan cricket team has been sorted. However, whether the fans can travel across the border to watch matches is still not clear,” an Apex Council member told the Press Trust of India on conditions of anonymity.

“It will be decided in due course of time. However, we had promised ICC that it will be sorted.”

Pakistan and India have not played bilateral cricket for close to a decade now due to political tensions between the two countries.

Pakistan has been demanding assurances from the ICC that visas will be granted to its players for the 16-team extravaganza, which will complete seven editions this year.

It must be noted here that the qualifying round for the mega event will take place firstly with teams divided into two groups. Sri Lanka, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, and Oman are placed in Group A whereas Bangladesh, Holland, Namibia, and Scotland will compete in Group B.

For the main event, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, and two qualifying teams are part of Group 1 whereas India, South Africa, Afghanistan, England, and two qualifying teams are placed in Group 2.

Two top teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals followed by the mega final, scheduled on November 15.

The tournament is most likely to be played with COVID-19 protocols being enforced. The Decision regarding the crowd will be taken after monitoring the situation closer to the time.

  • Meera finally breaks silence on being admitted in psychiatric facility

Meera has finally addressed rumours of being admitted to a mental health facility in the United States. Reports of the actor being admitted to a psychiatric facility in America were doing the rounds on social media as well as television.

Speaking to BBC Urdu, Meera shared that she was on a private trip to the US, during which she visited a hospital.

“I was vaccinated in a Brooklyn hospital, and went through some regular medical tests,” said Meera.

When asked to address rumours of being admitted to a psychiatric facility and being deported from America, Meera ignored the question saying: “It’s very late here, everyone is sleeping I can’t talk in detail.”

The actor later said that she was subjected to mental torture, adding that she had to go to the hospital “because I was suffering from depression. But they thought I’m mentally unstable and took away my phone from me.”

She further shared that she tried to explain the difference between mentally unstable and being depressed to them but they refused to understand and admitted her in the hospital.

“I was screaming the entire night, calling for help, and no one came. It was a really scary night for me,” remarked Meera.

Meera further shared that Sheikh Rasheed called the Pakistani Embassy in the US to help her, which made her release possible from the psychiatric facility.

She further clarified that she is not being deported from America but will in fact be returning to Pakistan to record a show.

Earlier, when reports of Meera being admitted to a mental facility were rife, her manager confirmed to The Current that the actor had only gone to get vaccinated and that reports of her being admitted to a facility were completely baseless.

  • PTI govt’s fourth finance minister in two years here for only six months?

PTI govt’s fourth finance minister in two years here for only six months?

As the government has decided to appoint Shaukat Fayyaz Ahmed Tarin as the new minister of finance and revenue, it needs to get him elected as the member of parliament within six months to have him continue in office, reports said.

This is the same as witnessed in Hafeez Shaikh’s case earlier.

In yet another shuffle in the federal cabinet, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday removed Hammad Azhar from the Finance Ministry less than a month after his appointment and replaced him with Tarin.

Prime Minister Imran, instead of appointing Tarin as his adviser on finance, appointed the banking wizard as the finance minister, for which, as per law, he needs to be a member of parliament within six months.

While most ministers have to be elected representatives – i.e. members of the National Assembly (NA) or Senate – there is a clause in the Constitution that allows short-term appointments of non-elected ministers.

According to clause nine of Article 91 of the Constitution, a non-elected person can be appointed a federal minister for six months once during the five-year tenure of the NA.

“A minister, who, for any period of six consecutive months, is not a member of the National Assembly, shall, at the expiration of that period, cease to be a minister and shall not before the dissolution of that assembly be again appointed a minister unless he is elected a member of that assembly,” reads the clause.

It is worth mentioning here that Tarin had become a senator and the federal finance minister in former president Asif Ali Zardari’s government.

According to an official at the Finance Ministry, Tarin, who was the finance minister during the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) tenure, would help the government in resolving many issues. As he had completed the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC), he may play an important role in resolving the longstanding issues related to the next NFC. No NFC award was given after the 7th NFC as differences between the Centre and provinces remained unresolved.

As Tarin had also signed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme during the PPP government, he may also handle matters with the IMF to complete the existing loan programme signed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. Islamabad had signed the 39-month bailout programme with the IMF to avert sovereign default because of a balance-of-payment crisis.

As the finance minister under the PPP government, Tarin had signed the bailout programme with the IMF under that government and concluded the seventh NFC Award. However, he left the ministry without completing his tenure to start his own bank, Silk Bank, where he served on the top slot.

These changes come at a time when Pakistan has just received another $500 million from the IMF as part of the $6 billion bailout package it signed in July 2019.
The third and latest tranche of the program brings the total borrowing for budget support to $2 billion.

Tarin was already a member of the prime minister’s Economic Advisory Council. He is a banker by profession and worked as the president of HBL in 1997. In 2000, he built Union Bank, which was later sold to Standard Chartered Bank.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the government had made an offer to Tarin to join the federal cabinet as special assistant or adviser to the PM, but he linked his joining the federal cabinet with the decision on an accountability reference that he has been facing for nearly a decade.

He had that said he would not accept the offer, which he claimed had been made for a second time, unless a case against him filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was disposed of.

  • Afridi wants PCB to review middle-order performances, suggests Shoaib Malik’s inclusion in T20Is

Afridi wants PCB to review middle-order performances, suggests Shoaib Malik’s inclusion in T20Is

Former captain of the Pakistan cricket team Shahid Afridi, while congratulating the Pakistani team on winning the T20I against South Africa, emphasised the need to work on middle-order performances.

“Despite the victory, we need to review the middle-order performances where we seem to be struggling for a long time,” wrote the former all-rounder on Twitter.

He also suggested that since it is the T20 World Cup year, the team should consider bringing Shoaib Malik back.

On Friday, Pakistan defeated South Africa by three wickets in the last fixture of the four-match T20I series at the Supersport Park in Centurion and clinched the series 3-1.

Pakistan, like South Africa, suffered a middle-order collapse as they went from 92-1 to 129-7.

However, Mohammad Nawaz kept his cool in the end and was aided by some poor bowling by the hosts, allowing the tourists to cap the tour with a 3-1 T20I series win to go with the ODI triumph earlier this month.

Pakistan will now depart for Zimbabwe on Saturday where they will play three T20Is on April 21, 23 and 25, followed by two Tests, which will be played from April 29 to May 3 and May 7-11.

Malik went past 10,000 T20 career runs when he scored 74 in a domestic game in Rawalpindi in October 2020. He is the third batsman to have reached the landmark after Kieron Pollard (10,370 runs) and Chris Gayle (13,296 runs).

The 39-year-old cricketer made his T20 debut in 2005 for Sialkot Stallions and has played 417 T20s in his career, scoring his 10,488 runs at an average of 37.06, with 64 half-centuries. He also has 151 wickets at 27.15, at an economy rate of 7.02.

In his international career, Malik has played 116 T20Is, scoring 2,335 runs at an average of 31.13, with 8 half-centuries. He has 28 wickets at 23.53, at an economy rate of 7.08.

Malik became the third batsman to reach 2000 runs in T20 Internationals after Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill. He reached the milestone during his 92nd T20 innings against Zimbabwe in Harare. While Mohammad Hafeez became the second Pakistani player to reach 2000 run-mark, number ninth in total.

The 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in October and November 2021 in India.

Anushka, Virat share some ‘special’ paw-tastic moments from 2020

Anushka Sharma has shared a video of her ‘priceless moments’ from 2020, which shows her and her husband, Virat Kohli playing with dogs.

In the new video, the couple, who are strong animal activists, could be seen playing with a bunch of dogs; feeding them, going on walks with them, and petting them, around what appears to be a farmland where they spent some time last year. Anushka’s dog, Dude, can also be seen with them.

Fans showered love on the couple in the comments section with some commenting that the video was ‘superb’ and ‘awesome’. The video also crossed five million views on Instagram.

Earlier this month, Virat had announced that he was collaborating with an animal healthcare company and NGO supporting stray animals to build safe spaces and ensure easy medical access to the stray animals of our city. Kohli said that the the aim of his shelters is to “ensure health and support” to stray animals. He also thanked Anushka for inspiring him.

“Looking after the welfare of animals is a cause very close to my heart now as Anushka is very passionate about this issue. Her vision to help stray animals across India is truly inspiring for me and since I have met her, I have tried to understand more about animal rights and the urgent need for medical assistance for strays. It is our dream to create a safer space for the stray animals of our city,” Kohli had said in a statement.

Anushka and Virat became parents for the first time earlier this year. Their daughter Vamika was born in January, but they’ve been particular about not sharing pictures of the baby on social media. They have also requested the press to not carry unauthorised images of the baby.

‘Peaky Blinders’ star Helen McCrory passes away at 52

Helen McCrory, the “beautiful and mighty” British actress known for playing steely female characters on stage and screen, has died of cancer at the age of 52, her husband, Damian Lewis, said on Friday.

“I’m heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family,” said the Homeland actor.

“She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God, we loved her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”

The shock announcement drew tributes from author JK Rowling, fellow actors including Michael Sheen and from the artistic director at London’s National Theatre who hailed McCrory as “unquestionably one of the great actors of her generation”.

Born in London to a Welsh mother and Scottish-born father, McCrory spent a year in Italy before studying acting at the Drama Centre. Her film roles included portraying Cherie Blair – wife of former prime minister Tony Blair – in Peter Morgan’s The Queen and The Special Relationship in 2006 and 2010 respectively. She also played Narcissa Malfoy – mother of Draco Malfoy – in the final three films in the Harry Potter franchise and appeared in the James Bond film Skyfall.

On television, she had a leading role as the Shelbys’ matriarch Polly Gray in Peaky Blinders. The BBC show began filming the sixth series this year, expected to air later in 2021, with McCrory understood to have reprised her role.

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy described McCrory as a compassionate friend and fearless actor.

“I am broken-hearted to lose such a dear friend,” Murphy said in a statement. “Helen was a beautiful, caring, funny, compassionate human being. She was also a gifted actor — fearless and magnificent. She elevated and made humane every scene, every character she played. It was a privilege to have worked with this brilliant woman, to have shared so many laughs over the years. I will dearly miss my pal. My love and thoughts are with Damian and her family.”

The couple, who had two young children, married in 2007. They had recently raised over one million pounds to give health workers restaurant meals during the pandemic.

  • UAE-brokered Pak-India peace a ‘tactical move’

United Arab Emirates-brokered backdoor diplomacy has brought a thaw in otherwise mounting tensions between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India, but it is no more than a “tactical move”, foreign media reports quoted local experts as saying.

Senior Pakistani and Indian intelligence officials held a series of secret meetings in Dubai in January this year in an attempt to stem the escalating tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), a de facto border that divides the disputed Kashmir valley between the two neighbors.

Last month, the two militaries agreed to honor the 2003 cease-fire along the LoC, followed by an exchange of letters between the two premiers, which was widely viewed as an outcome of the backdoor diplomacy.

The UAE’s ambassador to the US, Yousef Al Otaiba, confirmed Wednesday that the Gulf state is mediating between New Delhi and Islamabad to help them reach a “healthy and functional” relationship.

Addressing a virtual session with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, Otaiba said his country had a role behind the cease-fire at the Kashmir border, which hopefully ultimately would get relations back to a “healthy level.”

“The ongoing cease-fire [at the Kashmir border] is certainly the outcome of the backdoor diplomacy, which is benefitting Kashmiris living on both sides of the border,” retired Lt. Gen. Talat Masood, an Islamabad-based defense analyst, told Anadolu Agency.

“But this is all merely tactical. How long this (thaw) survives, we’ll have to wait and see,” said Masood, who served in the Pakistan Army from 1952 to 1990.

This, he added, is not the first time that back-channel contacts have helped ease tensions between the two arch rivals.

“It has happened on several occasions,” he said.

Echoing Masood’s view, Ikram Sehgal, a Karachi-based defense and security expert, appeared to be skeptical about the significance of the latest developments.

“Certainly, the UAE has interests both in India and Pakistan, and it will do its best to normalise things between the two neighbors. But in the given circumstances, it will not last long,” Sehgal told Anadolu Agency, referring to a host of land and sea disputes between the two neighbors, mainly over Kashmir.

“One should try to be optimistic about these developments, which, although, are not very significant,” he maintained.

Relations between India and Pakistan plummeted to a new low after August 2019, when India scrapped the longstanding special status of Jammu and Kashmir, prompting Islamabad to downgrade its diplomatic ties with New Delhi.

Islamabad says the normalisation of ties with New Delhi is linked to a review of the Aug. 5 decision and ultimate resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

‘NO CHANGE IN STANCE ON KASHMIR’:

Masood does not see any change in both countries’ stand on Kashmir following the back-channel diplomacy.

“There is a zero chance of change in India’s current position on Kashmir. It will not reverse its August 2019 decision because it feels that Pakistan cannot do anything except for diplomatic lobbying,” he went on to argue, adding “New Delhi is more interested in talks on trade, business and tourism, whereas Islamabad’s focus is on Kashmir.”

“India will be happy with backdoor or open diplomacy as long as it serves to maintain the current status on Kashmir,” he further said.

“In my opinion, open and backdoor diplomatic contacts will continue, however the level of flexibility to resolve the disputes is the most important factor to watch.”
Sharing a similar view, Sehgal, who is editor of a local defense magazine, Defense Journal of Pakistan, said New Delhi’s “downplaying” of actual issues with Islamabad is the main hurdle in the normalisation of ties.

    CHINA FACTOR:

The two experts believe that normalisation of ties between Pakistan and India will benefit both countries but may offend Islamabad’s longtime ally China.
“Normalisation of ties [with Pakistan] will help India focus on China and the economy, whereas it will benefit Islamabad in terms of trade and the economy,” Masood said, adding that the move, however, may irk China, which sees India as a US proxy in the region.

Sehgal said “China is our diehard supporter on Kashmir and other issues. We cannot afford to displease it at the cost of relations with India.”

India and China confront each other along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a de facto border line between the two nations in the Ladakh region of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region, where 20 Indian soldiers were killed last June.

Border tensions between the two countries span over seven decades. China claims territory in India’s northeast, while New Delhi accuses Beijing of occupying its territory in the Aksai Chin plateau in the Himalayas, including part of the Ladakh region.

“This is all not as simple as it seems. Many geopolitical and geoeconomic factors are involved in this process,” said Masood.

“We may say it’s another good beginning, but a rocky terrain lies ahead.”

  • Kartik Aaryan ousted from ‘Dostana 2’ after alleged fallout with Karan Johar

Dharma Productions has announced that they will be recasting for their upcoming film Dostana 2 due to “professional circumstances”. Dostana 2 is the standalone sequel to the highly popular 2008 film Dostana starring John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan. Karan Johar had announced the sequel in June 2019, revealing that Janhvi Kapoor and Kartik Aaryan were cast in the lead roles.

In an official statement, the Johar-led production house said: “Due to professional circumstances, on which we have decided to maintain a dignified silence – we will be recasting Dostana 2, directed by Collin D’Cunha. Please wait for the official announcement soon.”

Rumours of Kartik Aaryan leaving Dostana 2 have been doing the rounds on social media for several days. While there was no confirmation from anyone, sources close to the development revealed that after having shot for 20 days, Aaryan didn’t give further dates to the film due to a clash in schedule.

“After numerous queries from Kartik’s talent agency KWAN, Dharma failed to get the schedule dates. There’s Janhvi and Lakshya trying to accommodate dates amid their juggling schedules,” stated a report, adding that Johar has decided to never work with Kartik in the future.

“The team was a mess after a point. Dharma Productions have now decided to officially not associate with Kartik ever in future,” added the report.

Other reports have suggested that Kartik had creative differences with the director of the film which caused tension between the two prompting Dharma to replace the actor.

Aaryan’s ouster from the project will reportedly cost Dharma a whopping Rs 20 crores.

On the other hand, rumours are abuzz that there has been a fallout between Kartik and Johar.

According to Pinkvilla, Kartik expressed his displeasure with the second half of the script after shooting for 20 days, irking Karan.

Another report said that Johar became fed up with Kartik for not giving dates and giving other projects like Ram Madhvani’s Dhamaka more importance.

“For the longest time, Kartik gave a genuine reason of the COVID-19 pandemic to not start the shoot. He wanted to ensure safety so Karan didn’t push him much. But when he shot for Dhamaka, Karan was upset. They had an indoor meeting where Karan expressed his disappointment,” a source told the media outlet.

He added: “Kartik later got upset with the banner when they gave Shashank Khaitan’s Yoddha to Shahid Kapoor. Although Shahid soon quit, they never approached Kartik for the role. Furthermore, since Kartik’s dates were not available for Dostana 2, Karan decided to go ahead and start Mr Lele with Vicky Kaushal and Janhvi Kapoor from April. The moment Kartik got to know about this development he informed the production house that the only dates available for Dostana 2 this year will be April onwards.”

“Karan understood what Kartik was doing and quickly reprimanded him for the same. He was genuinely upset with Kartik as Janhvi had to pick between Dostana 2 and Mr Lele,” said the source, adding: “The last we heard, Karan and Kartik are not speaking a word to each other.”

To add more fuel to the fire, it has emerged that Johar has unfollowed Kartik on Instagram shortly after the announcement. However, Kartik continues to follow Johar on the picture-sharing app.

Meanwhile, Rajkummar Rao and Vicky Kaushal are reportedly being considered for the role Kartik was supposed to play.

Earlier, Kartik had expressed his excitement over the film saying: “The evolution is from one Dostana to the other. Dostana one that released in 2008 and the Dostana 2 that’s releasing in 2020, you will see that the representation is accurate, non-caricaturish and on point, talking about sexuality in a way that will not make you cringe while watching it.”

Aaryan made his Bollywood debut with Luv Ranjan’s Pyaar Ka Punchnama in 2011.
