    Pakistan’s first satellite completes six years in orbit

    Pakistan’s first remote sensing satellite and technology evaluation satellite has completed six years in orbit.

    According to SUPARCO’s spokesperson, images taken by the technology evaluation satellite Pak TES One have been released, including images of various places in Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan.

    It is said that the data obtained from the satellite has proven to be helpful in national development and scientific research.

    Further progress towards the development of Pakistan’s space program has also been reported.

    The PRSS One and Pak TES One satellites were launched on July 9, 2018, from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

    United States’ State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday that the US supported the right of the public to protest, adding that it opposes violent actions, looting, and arson, while addressing a news briefing in Washington, DC.

    “We support legitimate, free expression, including the right to protest, the right to peaceful assembly, and we oppose violent actions, we oppose vandalism, looting, arson,” the spokesperson added.

    Miller replied to a journalist’s question on May 9 riots, saying, “Governments should deal consistently with the rule of law and free speech.”

    On May 9, 2023, riots were triggered across the country when former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested from the premises of Islamabad High Court (IHC).

    Following the attacks on military and civilian installations, scores of PTI workers and leaders were put behind bars for their involvement in thr violence.

    TikTok removes 20 million videos in Pakistan for violating community guidelines

    TikTok has deleted 20 million videos in Pakistan that violated the social media giant’s community guidelines. The company wants to make sure its platform is safe and respectful for all users.

    This isn’t the first time TikTok has removed videos in Pakistan. Last year, it deleted 11.7 million videos for the same reason.

    TikTok uses special tools to find and remove videos that don’t follow its rules. It also deleted 21 million accounts that belonged to children under 13.

    In the meanwhile, it reported that proactive measures resulted in the global removal of 166,997,307 films, or around 0.9 percent of all videos posted on the site. “A significant fraction of these, 6,042,287 movies, were reinserted after additional examination, whereas 129,335,793 videos were recognised and removed by automatic detection systems.”

    TikTok has now disclosed the number of comments removed and filtered by its comment safety tools for the first time. TikTok has removed and filtered 976,479,946 comments during the three-month period.

    In Pakistan alone, the platform took action against 20,207,878 videos for also breaching its community guidelines during the same period. The platform utilizes automated systems to identify and remove videos that breach its rules.

    Punjab govt to give solar panels to households using 50-500 units

    Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the provision of solar panels to households consuming 50 to 500 units of electricity monthly under the provincial government’s “Roshan Gharana Programme.”

    The Chief Minister presided over a meeting of the Energy Department on Monday, saying, “The Punjab government will provide solar systems to crores of consumers consuming electricity from 50 to 500 units, and 90 percent of the solar panels’ cost will be paid by the provincial government and 10 percent by consumers.”

    Furthermore, she also said that the government will not leave people alone in difficult situations. “Programme beneficiaries will pay the government-provided amount in easy instalments in five years,” she stated.

    “Through a transparent procedure, solar systems will be given to the poorest families in phase-I”, the Chief Minister clarified.

    PSX closes at new record high despite fire incident

    On Monday, a fire incident caused a temporary halt in trading at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), yet the benchmark KSE-100 index continued its bullish run, closing at a new record high.

    The index remained relatively stable during the first hour of trading but faced a suspension from 10:25 am to 12:30 pm due to a fire outbreak at the main building, which houses several brokerage offices.

    Once trading resumed, the market quickly regained momentum. The KSE-100 index surged to an intra-day high of 80,737.71 points, adding 524.92 points. By the close of trading, the benchmark index settled at 80,566.21 points, marking an increase of 353.41 points or 0.44 per cent.

    Key sectors, including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, and oil marketing companies, saw significant buying activity. Prominent stocks such as OGDC, PPL, PSO, SHEL, HBL, and NBP ended the day in positive territory.

    The PSX had already been on a bullish trend the previous week, driven by aggressive buying from both local and foreign investors, as well as institutional support. The KSE-100 index had gained 1,767.83 points on a week-on-week basis, crossing the 80,000 mark to close at 80,212.79 points.

    The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA) reported that the price of gold per tola fell by Rs1,300, bringing it down to Rs245,100. Similarly, the rate for 10 grammes of gold decreased by Rs1,113, settling at Rs210,134.

    On the global stage, the price of gold was set at $2,376 per ounce, including a $20 premium, after a decline of $12 during the day.

    In contrast, silver prices in Pakistan remained steady, with rates holding firm at Rs2,900 per tola.

    Moreover, the Pakistani rupee on the first trading day of the week declined by Rs12.74 paisa to Rs278.5 against the US dollar.
