Indonesia: Chief Justice dismissed over decision in favor of the President’s son

A judicial panel in Indonesia has dismissed the Chief Justice of the country over allegations of conflict of interest. It was reported that Chief Justice Anwar Usman gave a verdict in favour of President Joko Widodo’s son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

Last month, Chief Justice who happened to be the President’s relative, gave a ruling regarding the age limit of vice-presidential elections, a decision critics saw as favouring him to a great extent. The controversy led to an outrage resulting in his dismissal by the panel of judges in the top court.

The judicial panel found him guilty of violating the ethical code of judges as he is the brother-in-law of the president and should have remained neutral but he could not recuse himself.

The panel was asked to investigate the conduct of judges amid public outcry after they ruled that the minimum age requirement of 40 need not apply to election candidates who had previously held elected office. The ruling was made just days before the start of registration for the 2024 election. The 36-year-old, already serving as a mayor of Surakarta city, was able to register for the election of the vice president.

The panel has decided that Justice Anwar can serve as one of the nine judges of the court but must not take part in any election-related cases in the future as those fall under a conflict of interest. The rest of the eight judges have also been reprimanded by the panel.

Criticism against the decision stemmed from the public seeing the step as part of Widodo’s aim of forming a dynasty by appointing his son the the vice-president. He himself has completed two terms and has not backed any candidate formally for upcoming elections.

    ICC suspends Sri Lanka’s membership

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Sri Lanka Cricket’s membership.

In a statement released by the ICC, it has been said that the International Cricket Council has decided to suspend Sri Lanka immediately.

According to the ICC, Sri Lankan cricket has been suspended due to government interference. The ICC spokesperson says that it was agreed in the board meeting that the Sri Lankan cricket matters are a violation of ICC rules.

According to the International Cricket Council, the terms and conditions of the suspension and its termination will be decided soon. It should be noted that Sri Lankan Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe dismissed the Cricket Board due to the poor performance of the Sri Lankan Cricket Team in the ICC One Day World Cup.

Arjuna Rana Tonga, the captain of the 1996 World Cup winning team, was handed over the responsibility while he was appointed as the interim chairman.

However, the former president of the cricket board, Shami Silwa, approached the court against the decision of the sports ministry, after which the appellate court stopped the implementation of the interim committee after dismissing the Sri Lankan cricket board.

  • Punjab govt aborts smart lockdown plan after rain improves air quality

Authorities in Punjab have lifted a ‘smart lockdown’ from Lahore and other cities after Friday morning brought in rain, dramatically improving air quality.

Within the provincial capital, rainfall was recorded across various regions, including Gulberg, Garden Town, Iqbal Town, Multan Road, Thokar Niaz Baig, Jail Road, Mall Road, Johar Town, Canal Road, and Raiwind Road.

The government of Punjab has lifted the smart lockdown enforced in the city, with caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi announcing on Twitter, “Markets open tomorrow, and restaurants can resume operations after 6 pm. The recent restrictions related to SMOG will be lifted from tomorrow morning.” This will be effective from today.

The weather has become considerably cooler, providing a much-needed break from the toxic smog that had engulfed the air. However, the average air quality index is 182 but in certain parts of the city, including Cantt and DHA Phase 8, the numbers are higher than in other areas.

It is important to note that this stroke of luck could be very short-lived as the dire condition of air quality in Lahore requires stringent measures to be taken.

  • Gold price increases to Rs213,100 per tola

Gold price increases to Rs213,100 per tola

The gold price in Pakistan witnessed an increase on Friday, with the cost of 24-karat gold rising by Rs1,300 per tola, settling at Rs213,100 in today’s session.

The Karachi Sarafa Association reported that the closing price for 10 grammes of 24-karat gold was Rs 182,698, indicating a loss of Rs1,114.
Meanwhile, 10 grammes of 22-karat gold saw an increase, reaching Rs166,452, up by Rs1,022.

In contrast, the silver prices remained unchanged in the domestic market, with 24-karat silver and 10 grammes of 24-karat silver closing at Rs2,580 and Rs2,211.93, respectively.

It is noteworthy that domestic gold prices are influenced by fluctuations in international prices and changes in the local currency’s interbank exchange rate.

Despite intraday gains, the Pakistani rupee (PKR) is facing its fourteenth consecutive loss against the USD.

The depreciation of PKR against the USD leads to an increase in the value of PKR-denominated gold since gold is denominated in US dollars.

On the global front, international gold prices experienced a decline, marking the second consecutive week of losses. International spot gold is currently trading at $1,954.29, down by 0.20 per cent for the day.

‘TV pe baith kar baatein karna asaan, jis ne mashwara dena ha mera number sub ke pass hai’: Babar Azam

Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam has a defiant reply for all his critics.

“For the last 3 years I was performing, I was also captaining, I don’t think there is any pressure on me. Team decisions are taken by the coaches and the captain, but if anyone wants to give advice, everyone has my number. It’s easy to sit on TV and talk,” Babar Azam said in a press conference.

Azam has been criticised heavily by fans, analysts and former cricketers after Pakistan’s poor performance at the World Cup.

“We have a net run rate plan in our mind, we will pursue it and how we 10 overs and what to play later is completely planned. If Fakhar Zaman plays 20 or 30 overs, we can get the required net run rate,” he said as Pakistan stares down at nearly impossible odds to make it to the semi-finals.

The captain of the national team said, “My performance was not such that people say that there was pressure on me, my goal was to finish well as a batsman. I wanted to try to win, and I bat according to the situation. We plan carefully, but sometimes the conditions don’t favor us to play freely. There are different conditions at each venue. We came to India for the first time, we didn’t know the conditions, and I believe we couldn’t perform as per expectations.”

Talking about the difficulty in reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, Babar Azam said, “The match against Afghanistan and South Africa should have been won. We will learn from mistakes, the margin for error is very low at this level.”

On the question of the future of his captaincy, Babar said that right now the focus is on the next match.

Israel does not ‘seek to govern Gaza’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave an interview to Fox News in which he said that the Israeli army will proceed with its offensive in Gaza until Hamas is “eradicated”.

“Nothing will stop that,” he added.

He also asserted that there will be no ceasefire unless the hostages held in Gaza are freed. Instead, he announced four-hour “pauses” in fighting in Gaza.

“The fighting continues against the Hamas enemy,” he said. “But in specific locations, for a given period of a few hours here, a few hours there, we want to facilitate the safe passage of civilians away from the zone of fighting.”

Human rights groups, however, have asserted that the “pauses” are not enough, and that an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian aid is the need of the hour.

More than 50 per cent of housing units wrecked

The media office of Gaza has revealed that Israeli attacks have led to the destruction of more than 50 per cent of housing units across Gaza — around 40,000 housing units.

It has been estimated that if the war continues for another month, the loss would increase to 8.4 percent of GDP, or $1.7bn whereas in third month it would rise to 12.2 per cent of GDP, or $2.5bn.

Additionally, around 390,000 jobs have been lost — 182,000 in Gaza and 208,000 in the occupied West Bank.

Poverty is also expected to rise 20-45 percent, depending on the duration of the war.

More than 100 activists occupy New York Times lobby, read out names of 10,000 murdered Palestinians

On Thursday more than 100 activists, including writers and journalists, protested outside The New York Times head office to criticise the publication for their complicity in the genocide of Gaza, as the death toll climbs up to almost 11,000 Palestinians.

Israeli tanks are currently surrounding all of the hospitals in Gaza with no opportunity for doctors and patients to leave, or for food and medicine to arrive.

In viral videos, the journalists distributed a mock newspaper of the publication titled ‘The New York Crimes’ which listed the names of the 36 Palestinian journalists who have been confirmed dead since Israel declared war on Gaza.

The activists accused NYT of complicity in the genocide in Palestine, demanding that the editorial board of the newspaper publicly back a ceasefire in Gaza.
