  • Govinda showed no interest in ‘Gadar’ over a moral issue

Govinda showed no interest in ‘Gadar’ over a moral issue

In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, director Anil Sharma spoke about the casting choices for the original 2001 film ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’. Rumors began circulating that Govinda was considered to play the lead role that eventually went to Sunny Deol. Now, the director has clarified that although the ‘Partner’ actor was not considered for the role, he himself wasn’t interested in the project because the film revolved around Hindu-Muslim conflict:

“Govinda wasn’t a choice for Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. I had done a film called Maharaja with him. One day, I was just narrating the story of Gadar to him and he told me, ‘I can’t do this film.’ He thought that I was narrating the film to him because I wanted to cast him.”

“Before narrating the story, I had told him that I have narrated this story to Sunny Deol and I am doing this film with him. Then he asked me, ‘What is the story?’ So then I narrated Gadar’s story to him and he told me, ‘No, I can’t do this film because it has so much Hindu-Muslim conflict.’”

The director revealed Govinda wasn’t his first choice as the lead role of the movie because he had already set his mind on casting a Punjabi hero like Sunny Deol:

“That was the small conversation we had about Gadar. Perhaps this misconception remained in his mind that I was offering him the film. But he wasn’t a bad choice, he was the superstar of that time but in my mind, I wanted a Punjabi hero and that could only be Sunny Deol.”

  • Dramatic drop: Pakistan Stock Exchange crashes over 1,700 points amid economic concerns

Dramatic drop: Pakistan Stock Exchange crashes over 1,700 points amid economic concerns

On Thursday, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) encountered a challenging session as the primary index witnessed a substantial decline of 3.86 per cent, reflecting a loss of 1,784 points by 2:53 pm. This notable downturn was attributed to growing concerns pertaining to the nation’s economic landscape.

Investors were worried about the rupee losing value against the dollar. This concern led them to sell off their shares, fearing that the economy could face trouble ahead.

Right from the start of the trading day, the KSE-100 index saw a big fall of over 1,100 points, taking it below the 46,000 mark. Unfortunately, the index couldn’t bounce back due to low investor confidence.

By 2:14 PM, the PSX had fallen to 45,139.34 points, a drop of 1,105.21 points compared to the previous day’s close of 46,244.55 points.

Investors are also keeping an eye on the rupee’s decline, especially since the International Monetary Fund (IMF) won’t review the situation for a few more months. Additionally, there’s uncertainty about investments from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

If the market keeps falling, some buyers might return, as the index is currently down 8 per cent from its recent high. But a real recovery would need clear information about politics and the economy.

According to experts, the PSX is under pressure due to the rupee’s continuous slide.

This could cause inflation to rise, which could affect the next Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in September. During that meeting, the central bank might consider raising interest rates again.

The financial market is worried about public protests against higher power tariffs. If the government tries to please the public with short-term measures, it could complicate talks with the IMF.

This report serves as an intraday update on the developments in the Pakistan Stock Exchange as of 2:53 pm.

Chandrayaan-3: Sulphur, other elements confirmed on moon

India’s moon rover, Pragyan of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, has confirmed the presence of sulphur on the lunar south pole, according to the Indian space agency.

“The Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument onboard Chandrayaan-3 Rover has made the first-ever in-situ measurements on the elemental composition of the lunar surface near the south pole,” the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said in a statement on Monday.

According to Al-Jazeera, spectrographic analysis has also confirmed the presence of aluminium, calcium, iron, chromium and titanium on the lunar surface, ISRO added, with additional measurements showing the presence of manganese, silicon and oxygen.

Pragyan, literally meaning wisdom in Sanskrit, will saunter the south pole and provide images and scientific data during its two-week lifespan, looking for signs of frozen water that could aid future missions as a potential source of drinking water for astronauts or to make rocket fuel.

ISRO chairman S Somanath stated that the rover will also study the moon’s atmosphere and seismic activity.

Naseeruddin Shah opens up about ‘love jihad’ accusations on marriage to Ratna Pathak

Bollywood veteran Naseeruddin Shah recently wrote an open letter to the National Herald where he addressed his 41-year long marriage to Hindu wife and actress, Ratna Pathak. He wrote that their bond has remained strong despite accusations of ‘love jihad’ levied by the spouse of an ex-prime minister, who told him “No one said anything when you married outside your religion.”

“I had no compunctions or hesitation about marrying a Hindu, and vice-versa.” wrote the ‘Masoom’ actor. “I didn’t dream that some put-out-to-pasture spouse of an ex-cabinet minister would, 38 years after my marriage, threaten me with ‘no one said anything when you married outside your religion’, stopping short of accusing me of love jihad but clearly implying that my time was now up.”

The actor, who met Ratna during the rehearsal for Satyadev Dubey’s play ‘Sambhog se Sanyas Tak’ in 1975. The actor went on to clarify that he was incredibyl supportive of whether the actress wished to convert to Islam or not, and so was his mother:

“As it happened, the subject of my wife Ratna converting to Islam was brought up just once by my mother and that as enquiry, to which on receiving a reply in the negative, she concurred with a ‘Haan, mazhab kaise badla jaa sakta hai.’ Whether this statement of a woman weaned exclusively on a diet of the Quran makes more sense than the hate-filled rhetoric of ‘Hindus and Muslims cannot live together’, I will leave to the judgement of the reader.”

The ‘Ishqiya’ actor went on to emphasize how his strong partnership is proof that Muslims and Hindus can live together peacefully:

“All I can say is that my union (accepted unquestioningly by both families) with a Hindu woman for 40 years so far is proof— if proof were needed—that it is not only possible but desirable for Hindus and Muslims to live together. So, from where did this poison appear? Or were the seeds of hatred planted during Partition slowly germinating all that while?”

The actor had previously gushed about Ratna being a supportive partner who stuck with him through thick and thin, and how the two have remained close friends:

“I just felt I’d like to know this person. Over the process of rehearsals, we got to know each other. I think she also liked what she saw. It’s been a great blessing because we have stood by each other through thick and thin. She has stood by me rather through thick and thin, through very difficult times, and through very good times. I think the main reason for that is because we have remained friends – that’s the most important thing.”

“Ratna was a blessing for me. In hindsight, she probably deserved better—I had been married before and was a drug addict when I met her. In fact, her parents never approved of our match. But Ratna being who she was, never paid any heed to it. We never paid any heed to it. We knew we wanted to be together and that’s what we did. And that resulted in this beautiful partnership and friendship that we share to this day. I consider myself very lucky to have had Ratna with me through every thick and thin, and every sadness and happiness. It’s beautiful how we still find something new about each other every day, even after all this time–something more to love and cherish about the other person. More than anything else, that is what I live for.”

  • Court throws out ECP review petition against May 14 election decision

Court throws out ECP review petition against May 14 election decision

The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday threw out the review petition of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) about the May 14 polls order, The News has reported.

“The court will intervene whenever there is a constitutional violation,” Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said.

In April 2023, a three-member bench of the apex court headed by CJP Bandial, comprising Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar declared the decision of the ECP to hold elections on October 8 instead of April 30 “illegal” and directed the ECP to hold elections in Punjab on May 14.

In its 14-page petition, ECP said that the apex court should review its decision as the court “doesn’t have the authority to give the date of elections”.

“Such powers exist elsewhere under the Constitution but certainly not lie in a court of law,” the ECP had said, citing various legalities and reasons behind its statement.

  • Elections to be held before mid-February: ECP

Elections to be held before mid-February: ECP

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has assured the Awami National Party (ANP) that elections will be held by end of January or mid-February at the most, depending on the completion of delimitation of constituencies.

According to Geo News, ECP met with representatives of ANP, Balochistan National Party (BNP) and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) to discuss the upcoming general election.

According to ANP leaders, the commission assured them of speeding up the process of delimitation, telling them that elections will not be delayed beyond mid-February.

In a statement released by the commission, ANP insisted on a date and schedule for the electoral exercise if elections were not being carrying out within 90 days. ANP believes that ECP should have consulted political parties before carrying out delimitation because under the constitution, the commission can not reduce or increase the seats given in the provinces.

On the contrary, the BAP delegation supported the initiation of delimitation, stating that not going for delimitation as per the new census would be an insult to political parties, candidates and the public, reported Geo News.

However, BNP representative Agha Hassan Baloch urged ECP to hold elections within 90 days. He highlighted that the new census seems to be faulty since the population of Balochistan has been reduced. “Therefore, our party believes that there is no use of new delimitation. If the election commission believes that delimitation is necessary, then the process should be corrected,” he said.

While speaking to the media, Mian Iftikhar of the ANP said that the electoral body will complete delimitation of constituencies soon in order to hold general elections no later than mid-February.
