  • Covid global health emergency is finally over after 3 years

Covid global health emergency is finally over after 3 years

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Covid-19 is no longer a “global health emergency”.

“It is with great hope that I declare Covid-19 over as a global health emergency,” said the W.H.O. director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“For more than a year the pandemic has been on a downward trend,” he stated, adding that this trend has allowed most countries to return to life as we knew it before Covid-19. “Yesterday, the emergency committee met for the 15th time and recommended to me that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice,” he declared.

The head of the WHO said that at least seven million individuals have died from the pandemic. More than 765 million confirmed Covid infections have been recorded worldwide.

  • Fitch warns of further depreciation of Pakistani rupee due to $6.7 billion debt payment

Fitch warns of further depreciation of Pakistani rupee due to $6.7 billion debt payment

Fitch, the world’s leading credit rating agency based in Hong Kong, said on Friday that Pakistan must pay a total of $6.7 billion in debt payments for the ongoing fiscal year of 2022-23.

Of this amount, $3.7 billion must be paid by Islamabad this month, with another $3 billion due in June. Krisjanis Krustins, Fitch’s director, warned that these payments could cause the Pakistani rupee to depreciate further, exerting greater pressure on the country’s currency.

Krustins also revealed that Pakistan expects a rollover of $2.4 billion from China to address its economic needs. However, he emphasised the need for Pakistan to revive its International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan programme.

Pakistan has been working to restart the stalled loan programme with the IMF. Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates pledged external funds, but the IMF has demanded that Pakistan “do more” to unlock the loan programme.

Finance Secretary Hamid Yakoob recently met with the IMF in the US, but the meeting remained unfruitful. The international lender has proposed that Pakistan arrange $1 billion from commercial banks to unlock the loan programme.

  • Supreme court will take action if govt and PTI don’t reach consensus: Chief Justice

During today’s proceedings, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial said that the Supreme Court (SC) would not “sit idle” on its order on holding elections in Punjab on May 14 if the talks between the government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) failed.

A three-member bench headed by CJ Bandial, comprising Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, heard the case

In the hearing, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawyer Farooq H Naek said that while the ruling alliance had agreed to dissolve the National Assembly in August, “more time is needed for negotiations.”

CJP remarked that the court is not interested in the PTI-government dialogue, however, the court has left the matter to the political parties.

Farooq H Naik assured the apex court that problems will be solved.

After conducting a hearing that lasted nearly two hours, the proceeding was adjourned, with the CJP saying that an appropriate order will be issued.

Post the negotiations, the PTI submitted a report to the court stating that no resolution was reached and requested that the court enforce its April 4 order regarding elections in Punjab.

Earlier, rounds of talks took place between the ruling alliance and the PTI, with both sides agreeing on having elections on the same date. However, the date itself became a bone of contention.

Meta blocks over 1,000 malicious URLs disguised as ChatGPT and AI tools

The internet is becoming more hazardous as the number of scams on the internet increases. Social media giants are now alerting users to fraudulent ChatGPT apps that are circulating on the internet. It is essential for users to be vigilant and only download ChatGPT apps from reliable sources.

Meta has identified scammers exploiting people’s interest in ChatGPT by enticing users to download harmful apps and browser extensions. Cybercriminals are taking advantage of people’s curiosity and trust in ChatGPT to launch attacks, using tactics similar to those used in cryptocurrency scams.

Meta has discovered about ten malware families that pose as ChatGPT and other similar tools. These malware strains are used to compromise accounts across the internet. Once a user downloads the malware, the malicious actors can launch an attack and keep updating their methods to bypass security protocols.

Meta’s Q3 2023 security report states, “Over the past several months, we’ve investigated and taken action against malware strains taking advantage of people’s interest in OpenAI’s ChatGPT to trick them into installing malware pretending to provide AI functionality.” The company has detected and blocked over 1,000 unique malicious URLs from being shared on their apps, protecting unsuspecting users from falling prey to these cyberattacks.

Furthermore, Meta has reported these malicious URLs to their industry peers at file-sharing services where malware is hosted, enabling them to take appropriate action to protect their users and networks. Meta has taken significant steps to combat the threat posed by malware strains posing as ChatGPT and similar tools.

Cybercriminals are also using other websites such as LinkedIn, Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Firefox to deceive people. Meta has taken action against nine groups worldwide who are attempting to influence people secretly and steal information.

Meta advises people to be cautious and ensure that the things they download are safe. They recommend that people only download things from trusted sources.

  • Modi influence: BJP leader Amit Shah forces son Jay Shah to exclude Pakistan from Asia Cup

Modi influence: BJP leader Amit Shah forces son Jay Shah to exclude Pakistan from Asia Cup

The controversy surrounding the upcoming Asia Cup has taken yet another bad turn as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders intervene into the stand-off between Pakistan and India.

Sources are saying that Asia Cup will be canceled and India is planning instead to play a five- nation Asian cricket cup in India excluding Pakistan.

Media speculations are rife that BJP leader Amit Shah has influenced his son Jay Shah, who is the president of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and also the secretary of Board of control for cricket in India (BCCI), to exclude Pakistan from Asia Cup 2023.

The same, as yet unconfirmed, reports have said that Amit Shah is also forcing his son not to send the Indian team to Pakistan. Reportedly, these decisions were debated overnight at the behest of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pakistan is likely to boycott World Cup 2023 if India axes Asia Cup 2023, with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi stating loud and clear that we will not back off from hosting the tournament as no team has security concerns. “We have hosted many international teams, so it’s clear that there is no security threats in Pakistan for Indian team.

If India will not want to play their matches in Pakistan we will provide them hybrid model but it’s we who decide where Indian Team will play, not them, because we are the host,” he said.

Asia Cup without Pakistan will not be the same because the revenue India and Pakistan matches produce is unmatchable.

  • Pakistan to pay for Russian oil in Chinese yuan, shipping expected in June

Pakistan to pay for Russian oil in Chinese yuan, shipping expected in June

According to a senior official from Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy, the country is expected to pay for a test cargo of 750,000 barrels of Russian oil in Chinese Yuan. The cargo is set to dock in Pakistan in June, with a possibility of arrival by the end of May.

It has been suggested that the Bank of China will play a role in the transactions. However, the exact mode of payment and discount offered have not been made public to avoid backlash from other countries purchasing Russian oil directly from Moscow.

The test cargo will likely contain URAL crude, which will be refined by Pakistan Refinery Limited. Commercial analysis of Russian crude has been conducted in favour of Pakistan’s economy, but will be further assessed after refining. The estimated shipping cost of the Russian oil is around $15 per barrel, which will be confirmed upon arrival at the Pakistani port.

Pakistan has reportedly settled on a per barrel price of $50-52, lower than the cap price of G7 countries at $60 per barrel. Pakistani refineries currently import 80 per cent of crude under long-term agreements with ADNOC and Saudi Aramco. However, the remaining 20 per cent provides a cushion to purchase Russian oil under GtG on a long-term agreement to some extent. The government plans to keep some cushion for purchasing crude from the international market, as crude prices can fluctuate.

Pakistan had initially hoped to obtain Russian crude at a discount close to $50 per barrel, $10 per barrel below the cap price imposed by G7 countries in response to the Ukraine conflict. However, a top official from the coalition government has expressed concern that importing Russian crude at a 30 per cent discount under the GtG agreement may not provide sufficient relief.
