Four members of the same family were found dead in a car parked on the motorway near Bhera staypoint in Sargodha on Friday. A fifth person in the car, the driver, was taken to the hospital unconscious.

After noting that the car was parked on the highway for a long time, highway police called Rescue 1122, broke the glass windows of the car and pulled out the bodies, rescue officials confirmed.

Rescue authorities informed Geo News that the bodies of a man, two women and a child have been recovered from the car. The driver was shifted to the hospital in a state of unconsciousness.

However, Express Tribune reported that the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) North Zone found the car’s five occupants in a semi-conscious state and shifted them to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital (THQ) in Bhera for urgent medical treatment.

Despite the hospital staff’s efforts, all succumbed to the suspected poisoning. They have been identified as Romila 60, Mahwish 30, Samar 28, and four-year-old Aun.

The family lived on McLeod Road in Lahore.

  • Doctors in Lahore protest against 5-year-old girl’s alleged rape

Doctors in Lahore protest against 5-year-old girl’s alleged rape

Following the news of the alleged rape of a 5-year-old girl in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Lahore, the staff of the facility and the Young Doctors Association (YDA) are protesting. Consequently, the Lahore police has now registered a case on the allegations.

Dawn’s Imran Gabol reported that the protest is led by the young doctors of the hospital. Their demonstration was also joined by the staff and students of the hospital as well as adjoining facility of the Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU).

The protestors demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged rape of a minor girl in the premises of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. “The students of FJMU/SGRH demand transparency and an investigation of the case. The students further demand the administration to answer their criminal silence. If such incidents are covered up and silenced, it raises a question mark for the hospital administration,” the demand said.

    The Case

ARY News reported that a sanitation worker identified as Abid Maseeh allegedly molested the minor child in the hospital when she was admitted on the third floor. The report said that the mother of the child refused to proceed with the case, but the police arrested the worker.

ARY News reported the accused later confessed by stating that he was overpowered by “evil desires”.

Meanwhile, Dr Hafiz Moinuddin, SRG hospital’s medical superintendent, told Dawn.com that the girl was sleeping with her mother in a corridor when a sanitary worker “touched” her at 2am in the night. He said the girl screamed and woke her mother up, prompting several people in the hospital to gather on the spot.

The sanitary worker was then taken to the security room, where the security in charge called the police and handed over the suspect to them.

Dr Moinuddin asserted that Abid was not a hospital employee and that the company responsible for hiring him had also fired him following the incident.

He also informed Dawn that the hospital administration was taking special measures for the security of the attendants of patients and would not tolerate any mismanagement.

The FIR was registered at the Civil Lines police states that the police received a call that a suspect had harassed a woman’s daughter on the hospital’s third floor. Upon arriving, the police were informed that the suspect was a sweeper at the hospital who was surrounded by a crowd after the girl had created noise.

In its editorial, Express Tribune said, “The hospital’s version may well be true, but then why the attempts to obstruct the course of a probe? Why the text of the FIR did not mention rape? One fails to understand why the country’s law enforcement moves at a snail’s pace to even register a report in such cases. Why the reluctance?”

Videos of doctors and paramedical staff protesting outside the hospital are widely shared on social media, where they criticise the FIR, ask for better security and allege that the hospital administration is downplaying the incident, covering up the matter and silencing the victim’s family.

So many took to social media and voiced their opinion. Nida Kirmani posted that, “The admin of Ganga Ram Hospital is trying to cover up the sexual abuse of a 5-year old patient & threatening students of Fatima Jinnah Medical Uni for protesting. They must hold themselves & their staff accountable & provide support to the victim & her family.”

Saadia Ahmed posted about the incident, commenting that “this region is unlivable for the vulnerable.”

No justice for 10-year-old Fatima Phuriro

The murder case of 10-year-old Fatima Phuriro at Peer’s Haveli in Ranipur ended inconclusively a year after the incident.

Fatima’s mother submitted an affidavit to the court declaring that the girl’s death was natural and that the arrested individuals were innocent.

She expressed no objection to the court granting bail to them.

The District and Sessions Court of Khairpur has adjourned the hearing indefinitely.

    Background

A domestic maid, 10-year-old child Fatima Phuriro, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Ranipur.

The child worked as a domestic worker at a haveli owned by an influential local, Pir Asad Shah Jilani.

A video showing young Fatima’s distress at Peer’s mansion went viral. After her death, the initial post-mortem report indicated evidence of torture and abuse.

Following the registration of the case, the accused—Pir Asadullah Shah, Pir Fayyaz Shah, Hina Shah, and Imtiaz—were arrested.

Fatima’s mother, Shabana, was informed about the death by the employer, who asked her to remove the body from the premises.

According to DIG Sukkur Javed Jiskani, the parents initially did not share the facts of the case with the police and claimed that the girl was suffering from gastroenteritis.

While her diagnosis was also confirmed by Dr Abdul Fatah Memon who treated her, the DIG revealed that Fatima was taken to the hospital either by the Pir or his staff and that the SHO was present at the time she was pronounced dead.

It was not until videos of the child were leaked by an unknown source and circulated on social media that the case caught the media’s eye. By then, the family had buried Fatima on August 15.

The body was later exhumed and sent for an autopsy which revealed that the girl had been raped both vaginally and anally.

  • Not a suicide; Sania Zehra was murdered

Not a suicide; Sania Zehra was murdered

Major developments in the death of 20-year-old Sania Zehra, a mother of two, whose death took social media by storm, have unveiled crucial details of her demise.

Azma Bokhari, Punjab’s Information Minister, informed the media on Monday that Sania’s death was not a result of suicide. It was in fact a homicide.

Sania’s father, Syed Asad Abbas Shah, had already claimed in the FIR that his daughter’s husband had killed her.

The provincial minister asserted that the husband is a suspect along with his mother, as all evidence points towards their role in Zehra’s killing.

“No evidence of suicide has been found in the Sania Zehra case. The mother-in-law and husband had put a noose around the girl’s neck together,” she said during a press conference.

The revelations have surfaced two days after the Punjab government constituted a six-member committee to oversee the probe into the murder case. The committee was authorised to find discrepancies in the FIR’s contents and the victim’s autopsy report.

Azma, along with Chairperson of the Women Protection Authority Hina Pervaiz Butt, updated the media that the wounds on the girl’s shoulder and neck were not due to the noose used for suicide. “Forensic lab traces such cases. Forensics have found evidence against Sania’s mother-in-law and husband,” she added.

Hina Butt stressed that she knew it was not a suicide case after seeing photographs of the crime scene. “Evidence later revealed that the girl was murdered and hanged. Mother-in-law and husband polygraph test positive,” Butt said.

    Forensic test report

Punjab Forensic Science Agency also submitted all its test reports stating that the forensics found no evidence of suicide.

“All the tests and investigations show that it is not a case of suicide. Sania Zehra was killed on July 9, and her [murder] was presented as a suicide,” the submitted report read.

Zehra’s neck was not swollen or elongated due to the noose. “The DNA of Sania’s husband and mother-in-law matched with the dupatta used as the noose,” as per the forensic report.

The noose around Zehra’s neck did not cause her death, and the scar on the neck and shoulder was not because of the dupatta, the report added.

“The DNA of the sample found from Sania’s nail was also matched with that of her husband,” it read.

Earlier, the reports came out allegedly confirming that Sania hanged herself, implying that she committed suicide. The reports also asserted that she was not pregnant.

Since the Punjab government established the suicide, The Current talked to Azma Bukhari, and she confirmed that Sania’s pregnancy could not be confirmed, blaming it on the forged post-mortem report. She said that Sania’s uterus was not opened, and the medical officer got changed at the last minute, which raised concerns about this aspect being compromised in the post-mortem investigation.

Azma admitted that even though the parents say that she was pregnant, the government can’t confirm because the post-mortem report was influenced.

    The case so far

On July 9, 2024, Zehra was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her home. Her father, Syed Asad Abbas Shah, reported the death to the police, accusing Zehra’s husband and in-laws of murder, claiming Sania showed signs of torture, including a broken jaw and bruised ribs.

However, the victim’s husband, Ali Raza fled the scene and was initially not held accountable.

The case attracted significant social media ire, prompting Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to instruct officials to investigate.

A joint investigation team was formed, and on July 13, the body was exhumed for a forensic report which confirmed asphyxia from hanging as the cause of death.

Husband Ali Raza was later arrested on July 20, facing charges related to forgery and dishonesty as he hid the truth of his first marriage from Sania and her family.

Despite claiming the death was a suicide following a domestic argument, Raza was arrested again after a press conference where he shared his version of the story and framed it as a case of suicide.
