  • Pro-Palestinian demonstrators protest outside the Met Gala

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators protest outside the Met Gala

Protesters in New York converged near the Met Gala on Monday in a rally against the ongoing war in Gaza, leading to several arrests, police said.

Among the rallying points were the gates of Columbia University, which has been the center of spreading demonstrations, before protesters marched through Manhattan to American fashion’s biggest night — or at least as close as police would let them.

The Met Gala, which attracts celebrities, fashion designers and mass media attention, is a yearly mammoth fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

It was unclear how many arrests were made as stars walked the carpet and posed for photos, but AFP journalists confirmed several arrests while the New York Daily News reported the number was about a dozen, out of hundreds that gathered near the soiree.

Organizers on X, formerly Twitter, posted a flier for an event dubbed as the “Citywide Day of Rage for Gaza.”

Monday’s protest appeared unconnected to the demonstrations that have rocked Columbia’s campus, culminating in the university calling the police to clear out student protesters.

Despite growing concern from a number of young voters and some members of Joe Biden’s Democratic Party over the growing civilian death toll, the president has continued to support Israel in its war in Gaza.

Under domestic pressure from the left and the right in an election year, Biden has tried to walk a thin line, pushing for a ceasefire deal and warning Israel not to invade the Gazan city of Rafah — though he has not stopped US arms from flowing to the country or conditioned future aid.

Vowing to destroy Hamas, Israel launched an offensive that has killed at least 34,735 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

  • Imtiaz Ali was advised against casting Shahid Kareena in ‘Jab We Met’

Imtiaz Ali was advised against casting Shahid Kareena in ‘Jab We Met’

Bollywood filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has revealed quite shockingly, that he was advised against casting A-listers Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor in his cult hit film ‘Jab We Met.’
Director Imtiaz Ali, who recently made a biopic film on Indian Punjabi singer ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, said in a recent interview that he defied suggestions and cast Shahid and Kareena Kapoor in ‘Jab We Met’. The film proved to be a pivotal moment in their careers, achieving cult status over time.

Imtiaz Ali said, “Fortunately, I have had different opportunities in my career with the supposed success of, or the position of stars, to put it that way.”
He also said “I remember Shahid and Kareena visiting Jab We Met once. They were not doing well at the time. But it was very successful. You know, people really love that movie, don’t they? So, as a filmmaker, I believe I shouldn’t treat the film industry like the stock market,” said the filmmaker. “Making guesses isn’t what a film director, filmmaker, or producer should be focused on. Instead, we should recognize the potential of each actor for the roles we offer them.”

He concluded, “A film works when you cast the actor who is most appropriate for that part, not just whoever might be popular at the time. I believe that’s what I’ve learned from my experience.”

  • Here’s why Selena Gomez said sorry to Palestine supporter

Here’s why Selena Gomez said sorry to Palestine supporter

Selena Gomez got into trouble after posting an innocuous picture on Instagram. In the picture, there was a Starbucks coffee cup in the background. People got really mad at her because she not only bought coffee from Starbucks but also showed it off on her platform. This upset people because there’s a global boycott against brands connected to or supporting Israel, and Starbucks is one of them.

But some fans got upset, as Starbucks had been boycotted by supporters of the Palestinian cause and labour unions alike. One person criticized her for not knowing about the campaign against Israel called Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS).

People who support the BDS campaign are asking others to stop supporting Starbucks as Israel continues genocide in Gaza. One fan commented, “She really deserves all the hate she can’t be that stupid,” saying that Selena Gomez can’t really be unaware that Starbucks is connected to Israel’s controversial apartheid of Palestinians.

In reply, the singer directly addressed the criticism. She admitted she didn’t know about the issue and said sorry if she upset anyone. She responded to the comment, saying, “I did not know. So apparently I am that stupid. I’m sorry.”
The criticism shows how much the BDS movement is growing. They want companies and people stop supporting Israel because of the conflict with Palestine.

After Israel started a military operation on October 7, which led to the deaths of many Palestinians, people criticized Gomez for not showing support. When she said that one post wouldn’t make a difference, she faced a lot of criticism. Then, her makeup brand’s Instagram page posted about the crisis in Gaza and said they wanted to help. They also shared the donations they made to organizations like the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies – Magen David Adom and Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
However, one X user pointed out how Gomez was still “both siding” the situation, especially given that Magen David Adom is Israel’s National Emergency Pre-Hospital Medical and Blood Services Organization. “She’s donating to Magen David Adom who support the IDF and the killing of Palestinian kids,” said the user of the site formerly known as Twitter. “This is a ‘both sides’ post. Why are you donating to MDA which is literally supporting the IDF? Supporting both sides is not activism.”
