Why is #BoycottPathaan trending in India after release of Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika’s song ‘Besharam Rang’?

The recently released song “Besharam Rang” from the upcoming film “Pathan,” starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, is making rounds on social media.’

The song garnered a lot of praise, the hashtag #BoycottPathaan also started trending on social media.

The song is being criticised for allegedly hurting Hinduism by disrespecting the colours associated with it. Many extremists are claiming that the colours of the bikni Deepika is wearing in the video are disrespectful to Hinduism.

Indian right-wing activist Dr Prachi Sadhvi in a tweet wrote, “Ban This Movie in India.”

The Home Minister of Madhya Pardesh, Narottam Mishra, has asked for the makers of Pathaan to change the visuals and the costumes of the song, calling them objectionable.

“The outfits that have been worn in the song are objectionable. It is evident that polluted minds are behind filming this song. Anyway, Deepika Padukone has been a supporter of the Tukde Tukde gang when she went for the JNU protests and that is why, I would like to request that they should correct the visuals of the song, correct the costumes, or else the permission to release this film in MP should be given or not will be a thinkable question,” he said.

Netizens react to Behroze Sabzwari slamming women for wearing ‘tight’ clothes

Senior actor Behroze Sabzwari appeared on Nadir Ali’s podcast and shared his take on the “inappropriate” dressing of women and the increasing “vulgarity” in dramas. After the host highlighted how “vulgarity is becoming a norm in Pakistani dramas,” the Chauraha star immediately confessed to taking part in such projects as well.

“Yes, I am against all of this but I am also acting in these dramas and that’s the bitter truth. In these narratives, sisters are having affairs with their brothers-in-law. I don’t like these scripts and watching them with family is absurd to me. I mean what is this nonsense, is there no other subject left to explore for writers?” lamented Sabzwari.

The Diyar-e-Dil actor also disclosed why penning such scripts are in fashion today. He said, “It’s wrong, but the viewership is massive and the ratings of these dramas always skyrocket. Now if one takes their clothes off onscreen that will do the trick too.”

Taking his moment, Ali then diverted the subject to female actors and how they wear “see-through pajamas on sets to grab attention.”

In response to Ali, Sabzwari then advised actors to take pay more attention to their dress code. He remarked, “They should think about this. [Their choice of clothing]. It is the responsibility of an actor to take control of their attire and make sure they aren’t dressed in something that doesn’t look pleasing.”

Sabzwari also pointed out that the clothes in style today are mostly adopted from other cultures. “Why don’t we wear our own cultural attire like shalwar kameez and dupatta? Allah will grant you respect even in these clothes. You don’t get popular by copying clothes from foreign countries, you actually get disrespected in society,” added the Tanhaiyaan actor.

Talking about women wearing tight clothes, he said, “In Pakistan a lot of people have motorbikes, obviously, everyone can’t afford cars, there is inflation and people are barely surviving, but, I have noticed one thing that the dressing of women is not appropriate while sitting on bikes, some women wear weird clothes which cannot be called appropriate, they are not good at all, the clothes are not only see through but usually are very tight, it shows home training, women should be fully covered while sitting on the motorbike. This should be strictly kept in mind. Men should also control their eyes and women should be dressed up in an appropriate manner.”

After this interview went viral, actor Iffat Omar slammed Behroze on her Instagram story for his stance on women’s choice of clothing. She termed him a hypocrite and an illiterate.

Netizens also shared their take on Sabzwari’s remarks.

  • Critics unimpressed by Harry and Meghan docuseries

Critics unimpressed by Harry and Meghan docuseries

The first project produced for Netflix by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has left critics’ mostly unimpressed. Almost five days after the first three episodes of the duo’s docuseries titled ‘Harry & Meghan’ was released by the streaming giant, the reviews are in, and they are not very kind.

Washington Post has termed ‘Harry & Meghan ‘ a “yawner”, with a reviewer asking if the couple “have anything else to say”.

Hollywood’s entertainment magazine of record, Variety, was no less unkind, writing : “The Sussexes surprise us yet again, with just how narrow their vision of their fame is, how pinched and unimaginative their presence on the world stage has become.”

On American online magazine Slate, reviewer Nadira Goffe called the series, “a bit of a mess”, stating that it can’t decide if it wants to be a “history analysis or juicy tell-all”.

French reviewer Laura Sagalovitsch minced no words either, stating that the Sussexes are, “nothing but a vague actress and a fallen prince, both united behind the idea of selling to the highest bidder the story of their undying vacuousness”.

Germany’s Der Spiegel asked it’s readers why Harry s telling this story on the very platform that is “currently exploiting his mother’s sad life as entertainment in the mega hit series The Crown remains unclear. Perhaps it has to do with a lot of money.”

The New York Times tempered it’s review, writing that the docuseries “has all the intimacy of Instagram”.

The series is however, a ratings bonanza, currently behind Tim Burton’s Wednesday on Netflix. Given the hefty price tag that Netflix is paying the Sussexes for the joint productions, many media outlets are speculating whether the streaming service will be forced to review it’s production terms.

  • Nadia Jamil extensively scrutinises Danish Taimoor’s ‘Kesi Teri Khudgarzi’ character

Nadia Jamil extensively scrutinises Danish Taimoor’s ‘Kesi Teri Khudgarzi’ character

ARY drama serial Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi just aired its second last episode recently and it has naturally left the viewers in an informal panel of their own, discussing the trajectory of the drama. Actor Nadia Jamil shared her thoughts on the show and called out the male leads for being cloaked with toxic masculinity. She said that our dramas are setting the bar too low for heroes.

Kaisi Teri Khudgarzi stars Danish Taimoor (Shamsher), Dure Fishan (Mehak), Nauman Ijaz (Dilawar), and Atiqa Odho (Shamsher’s mother). The drama is about the son of a business tycoon, Shamsher, falling in love with Mehak, who belongs to a middle-class background. His family does not approve of their relationship and drama ensues.

On Friday, she retweeted a tweet by journalist Fifi Haroon describing the drama as ‘well developed’, saying it was very much possible for Mehak to fall for the first man she gets close to despite all his red flags. Jamil responded by bringing up all the messed up things the male lead has done to manipulate the woman he loves into staying with him.

In response, the journalist said that her point was not to romanticize the behaviour, to say that it wasn’t “implausible” for a girl with such a background to develop feelings for a guy like that.

The Mujhay Jeenay Do actor said that though she is horrified, it is entirely plausible that she did. “Many many women forgive their abusers. Low worth. The ultimate fantasy being validation from the abuser,” she wrote, adding that what was actually implausible was the personality change the guy went through “from the extreme devil to extreme angel”.

Referring to real-life cases of abusive men, she said that compared to other horrible crimes, Shamsher could be considered a hero, which sets such a low bar for men.

She affirmed that it was Stockholm syndrome on the woman’s part and said it was entertaining since there was some sense of justice around the end. Calling toxic masculinity “nauseating”, the Behadd actor said that so many dramas propagate it, such as Habs starring Feroze Khan and Ushna Shah and Fraud starring Saba Qamar, Mikaal Zulfiqar and Ahsan Khan.

She criticised Shamsher’s “change”, terming it “a bit far fetched”. Bringing up his obsessive codependent love, she also called out Mehak’s father for the toxic elements in his personality. “CONSTANT crying about being a dad of daughters. That was the worst. Much as I love the actor playing the dad — and he’s acted well. But those dialogues against being a dad of two daughters, uff.”
