  • Beloved Maggie Smith playing Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter dies at 89

Beloved Maggie Smith playing Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter dies at 89

Maggie Smith, who died on Friday aged 89, was an Oscar-winning legend of stage and screen, renowned for playing wide repertoire of characters during a decades-spanning career and personifying a particular kind of English eccentricity.

For more than 60 years, on stage and on screen, she excelled in whatever she turned her hand to, winning a Tony, two Oscars, three Golden Globes and five Baftas.

She became best-known in recent decades for her portayal of the kindly Professor McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” film franchise and the Dowager Countess in the hit television period drama series “Downton Abbey”.

Smith became an international star in the 1960s and 1970s, when she won Oscars for best actress in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (1969) and “Travels with my Aunt” (1972).

She was one of Britain’s most famous and beloved actors.

Her portrayal of the caustic Countess of Grantham, Lady Violet Crawley, in “Downton Abbey” (2010-2015), which was screened in over 100 countries, won her a new generation of admirers around the globe.

“It’s ridiculous. I led a perfectly normal life until Downton Abbey,” she told the British Film Institute in April 2017.

“I would go to theatres, I would go to galleries and things like that on my own. And now I can’t.”

Smith played the ruthless aristocrat in all six seasons of the show, created by screenwriter Julian Fellowes in 2010, winning a Golden Globe and three Emmy awards.

After initially declining to participate in a big-screen adaptation of the series, the actress eventually agreed to appear in the film, which was a hit around the world in 2019.

    • Snooty schoolteacher –

Born on December 28, 1934, the daughter of a secretary from Glasgow and an Oxford professor of pathology, Smith made her stage debut in 1952 with the Oxford University Dramatic Society.

A string of stage successes in London’s West End and on Broadway followed, and she famously appeared opposite Laurence Olivier in 1959.

This led to her becoming a member of Olivier’s celebrated 1960s National Theatre company, where she earned critical acclaim alongside her husband, the actor Robert Stephens.

By the end of the decade, Smith’s film career had taken off.

She won the best actress Academy Award in 1969 for her unforgettable portrayal of a snooty, unorthodox Edinburgh schoolteacher in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”.

She also picked up a best supporting actress award in 1978 for “California Suite” and, in all, won six Oscar nominations.

Smith’s marriage to heavy-drinking Stephens, with whom she had two sons, had collapsed in 1973 and they divorced two years later.

She remarried shortly after to screenwriter Beverley Cross, who died in 1998.

Smith was made a Dame of the British Empire in recognition of her work in 1990 and, beside the top honours, won many other stage and screen awards in both Britain and the United States.

    • ‘Energy and curiosity’ –

Smith was widely considered a near-flawless actress, with the rare ability to make a cameo role a central feature of a film.

“(She) can capture in a single moment more than many actors can convey in an entire film,” said acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner after working with her on “The Lady in the Van” (2015).

“She can be vulnerable, fierce, bleak and hilarious simultaneously, and she brings to the set each day the energy and curiosity of a young actor who’s just started out,” he added.

Smith left some people feeling overawed.

“It’s true I don’t tolerate fools but then they don’t tolerate me, so I am spiky,” she told The Guardian in 2014.

“Maybe that’s why I’m quite good at playing spiky elderly ladies.”

Perhaps the best example was 2001’s “Gosford Park” — also written by Fellowes — in which Smith played the frightful Constance, Countess of Trentham, with aplomb.

She was credited with a dogged dedication to her craft.

She survived a breast cancer diagnosis in 2007 and filmed “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” two years later while enduring chemotherapy treatment.

“I was hairless. I had no problem getting the wig on — I was like a boiled egg,” she told The Times of the experience.

The actor also suffered from Graves disease, a manageable thyroid condition causing tiredness, weight loss and heart palpitations.

Smith is survived by her sons, actors Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens

  • Fraud case: Actress Nazish Jahangir’s interim bail rejected

Fraud case: Actress Nazish Jahangir’s interim bail rejected

The Lahore Sessions Court dismissed actress Nazish Jahangir’s bail on the grounds of non-compliance, and the police have registered a case against her.

The fraud case against Nazish Jahangir was lodged by fellow actress Azan Aswad Haroon, who alleged that Jahangir had borrowed Rs 2.5 million and a car for two months.

She claims that even after two months, Nazish has not returned the money or the car.

The court, while rejecting the interim bail of the actress, extended the interim bail of the co-accused till the first week of October.

Previously, in 2020, Nazish and actor Mohsin Abbas Haider were arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cybercrime wing in Karachi.

Both have rejected claims of arrests. They are also rumoured to be in a relationship, which is one of the reasons behind Haider’s divorce.

Now, according to reports, Haider and Jahangir were arrested by the FIA cybercrime wing in Karachi on Friday.

Reports of arrests emerged after Mohsin’s former wife, Fatima Sohail, posted a news clipping on Instagram, thanking the FIA for giving her justice.

They are allegedly being interrogated over charges of blackmailing, harassment, fake pictures and videos after evidence was collected against both of them. Fatima had filed a case with FIA accusing Mohsin and Nazish of harassing her over social media.

Mohsin and Fatima got divorced after fours years of marriage last year. Their divorce was heavily publicised after Fatima, in an explosive social media account posted on July 20, 2019, alleged that Mohsin was domestically abusive and had hit her on multiple occasions. She later filed an FIR against Mohsin on grounds of abusive behaviour and that Mohsin extorted money from her.

In August 2019, Mohsin was found guilty of threatening Fatima by a lower court in Lahore. However, he was found innocent of breach of trust and demanding money from his wife.

Nazish Jahangir, who maintained her innocence throughout the case, faced charges concerning cyber harassment under Pakistan’s laws.

Munawar Saeed shares how he knew his son would survive the PIA crash

On May 22, 2020, PIA flight 8303 crashed in Karachi, killing nearly everyone on board and leaving many families in grief.

Munawar Saeed was among the families anxiously waiting for news about his son, Zafar Masud, who was on the flight.

During an appearance as a guest on Nadan Maizban hosted by Danish Nawaz, Yasir Nawaz and Nida Yasir,  Munawar Saeed shared a touching story about his  son Zafar and how he survived the terrible PIA plane crash.

The host Yasir Nawaz asked, “How did he (Zafar) survive?”

Munawar Saeed replied, “Well, there was a seat right at the corner of the plane next to the door. When the plane started shaking, that seat came off, and the door opened.  He got out of the seat because it was chaotic, and Zafar fell onto the roof of a house. After falling, he slipped off the roof and landed on the bonnet of a car that was parked below. He was still strapped in with the seatbelt, so he fell onto the car.”

“Zafar Masud survived because of that seat, and Allah’s mercy was such that he didn’t land headfirst because fell with the seat. The car he fell onto had a family inside who were on their way to drop someone off at the station. When he fell, they were startled and got out to see what had happened. They saw a man lying there. They noticed that the plane had caught fire and were worried. They came closer and realized that he was alive. Zafar asked them to help him, but he didn’t remember being my son at that moment. They helped him up, and right in front of them was an ambulance. They immediately placed him in the ambulance and took him to a hospital that was near the airport. It is truly remarkable; Allah’s mercy saved him,” Saeed added.

Out of the ninety-one passengers and eight crew members on the plane, ninety-seven were killed. Only two passengers survived but were injured. Eight people on the ground were also hurt in the accident, and sadly, one of them later died from her injuries.

  • ‘Manzar Sehbai and Naumaan Ijaz are the coolest seniors’: Duniyapur cast

‘Manzar Sehbai and Naumaan Ijaz are the coolest seniors’: Duniyapur cast

Stepping onto a new set can make anyone feel nervous, but the cool and friendly seniors in Duniyapur made it easier for younger actors in the cast.

Recently, Khushal Khan, Ali Raza and Shamyl Khan appeared on Gloss Etc by Maliha Rehman, where they shared their experience working with senior actors.

The host asked the actors about their experience of working with veterans Naumaan Ijaz and Manzar Sehbai.

Khushal Khan said, “They are cool people, they are not like the senior types, they just blend in and make you feel so easy and comfortable. Manzar Sahab. Because throughout the scene, he was just there, giving cues without moving even an inch. He would give cues to every actor, and even when it was a master shot with someone else’s close-up, he would just be there in the background.”

    Talking about Naumaan Ijaz.

“Noomi Bhai’s health wasn’t great, but he would travel and shoot in Sargodha. Hats off to him, Manzar Sahab, and Noomi Bhai. Because, I mean, we wouldn’t even consider ourselves in that category we would just be sidelined. We couldn’t complain because there was no heat or anything,” Khushal Khan added.

Ali Raza added a lighthearted note about the makeup process, sharing,

“There’s a requirement for makeup because we need to come on screen, but there’s no makeup in this. It was just a get-up for Ashraf Bhai. I told him that there’s no makeup because we need a raw feel; we don’t want to com e with makeup. Everyone looks good, that’s true, but we didn’t apply makeup. The hair wasn’t done; the jeans and hair were a bit messy.”

The drama is written by Radain Shah and directed by Shahid Shafaat.

The cast of the drama includes Ramsha Khan, Nayyar Eja, Hussain Shah, Yousaf Bashir, Sami Khan, Saima Qureshi, and Erum Akhter.
