  • Mansha Pasha explains what she meant by ‘desi fashion is sustainable fashion’

Mansha Pasha explains what she meant by ‘desi fashion is sustainable fashion’

Mansha Pasha recently remarked that sustainable fashion is just a trendier and fancier name for desi fashion.

In a tweet, the actor wrote: “Sustainable fashion/living: Don’t know why this has become a trend because it’s been given a fancy name. It’s basically what parents in the subcontinent have always taught their children: cheezon ko zaya mat karo aur kapre ko alag alag occasions par use karo!”

Mansha further said that when she was growing up, she and her sisters would share each other’s clothes. She added that the same was done on the sets of the hit drama serial Zindagi Gulzar Hai to “give the true vibe of a desi household”.

While some social media users agreed with Mansha, others disagreed with her and criticised her for her comments.

“Desi fashion is not always sustainable fashion. Sharing clothes is one of the many sustainable things you can do to maintain a sustainable wardrobe. How is the cloth made and how it is dyed is most important. Desi fashion is made of polyester which is unsustainable,” commented a Twitter user.

Later, Mansha took to social media to clarify what she meant by her statement.

“With respect to my last tweet – ethical fashion encompasses many things including worker rights, [the] ecological impact of dying fabric, water consumption. I was speaking of the trend of reusing clothing done in desi households already and is promoted as sustainable fashion online.”

She also explained what she meant in her Instagram story, saying that her comments were not in reference to ethical fashion but to “the sustainable fashion trend of reusing same clothes”.

According to Google, sustainable fashion is “a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. This means dealing with interdependent social, cultural, ecological, and financial systems.”

This means that Manshas analogy was not wrong. It is good to know that our actors are trying to educate their fans and followers and promoting sustainable living.

  • Mirzapur MP asks Modi to ban ‘Mirzapur 2’

Mirzapur MP asks Modi to ban ‘Mirzapur 2’

An MP from Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Mirzapur district Anupriya Patel has demanded a ban on the web series Mirzapur 2, saying it was spreading ethnic disharmony. The Apna Dal parliamentarian said that the series was maligning the image of Mirzapur by portraying it as a “violent” region.

According to details, Patel told reporters that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Mirzapur is a ‘centre of harmony’ and the matter must be investigated and strict action be taken against those responsible for sullying its image”.

She further said: “As an MP of Mirzapur district, I demand that the series be investigated and action should be taken against it.”

Mirzapur 2 is a violent tale of feuds in families, politics and elections. It features Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi Ali Fazal and Divyendu Sharma in the lead roles. The show, which premiered on October 23 on Amazon Prime is immensely popular in both India and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, some social media users also called for a ban on the series, Ali Fazal and co-producer Farhan Akhtar. According to Indian media, the reason for its boycott could be Fazal and Akhtar. People are angry about Fazal’s previous post on Twitter in December 2019, in which he opposed the CAA and NRC.

However, Patel’s call for an inquiry against Mirzapur 2 does not hold because it is a fictional series. Further, a detailed disclaimer before each episode states that any ‘resemblance to actual events or people is purely coincidental’.

The disclaimer adds: “Any dialogues, characters in the program are not intended to offend the sentiments of any individual, caste, community, race or religion or to denigrate any institution, political party or person, living or dead.”

  • ‘Churails’ banned from streaming in Pakistan

‘Churails’ banned from streaming in Pakistan

The banning culture in Pakistan seems to be getting out of hand. The week started with calls to ban Mehwish Hayat’s latest biscuit commercial and now original Pakistani series Churails has been banned from streaming in Pakistan.

The director and creator of the show, Asim Abbasi took to social media to express his disappointment and hurt over the move.

“How strange for Churails to be lauded internationally, and now be shut down in its country of origin,” wrote Abbasi on social media. “In the very country where hundreds of artists came together to create something that could initiate dialogue and open doors for new narratives. Artistic freedom squashed because it is wrongly perceived by some as a moral threat. Predictable, and yet, still disappointing.”

He added: “For this is not just my loss. This is a loss for women and marginalised communities that this show meant to re-represent.”

Sarwat Gilani, who plays one of the leads in the show, also posted a cryptic message on social media after the ban.

Though Churails released on August 11 and has already been streaming for almost two months, it is believed that the ban was imposed after a clip from the show went viral on social media. In the clip, Hina Khawaja Bayat’s character talks about giving a ‘hand job’ to a much older man for a promotion.

Featuring Sarwat, Yasra Rizvi, Nimra Bucha, Meher Bano and Omair Rana among others, Churails is the story of four self-proclaimed ‘Churails’ who come together to open a covert detective agency to expose cheating husbands amongst the city’s elite. As their operations expand, they come to be saviours of abused, harassed and mistreated women. The 10-episode series covers a myriad of issues such as child abuse, sexism, the domination of class and race and aims to challenge the hypocrisy of patriarchal societies.

Lahore and Karachi are the two biggest cities of the country and are also known globally for nurturing Pakistani cricketers.
