  • Sarah Inam murder case: Shahnawaz, mother indicted

    A district and sessions court in Islamabad has indicted prime suspect Shahnawaz Amir and his mother Sameena Shah, on Monday in the Sarah Inam murder case.

    The indictment was issued by sessions court judge Atta Rabbani while dismissing Sameena’s plea requesting the court to discharge her from the case. The verdict on the plea was reserved earlier in the day after legal arguments were finished.

    In September, news of Sarah’s murder rocked Islamabad as details of the crime spread across social media and news networks.

    Central to the sensationalism surrounding the crime was the fact that the alleged murderer was the son of renowned columnist and political analyst, Ayaz Amir.

    It has been reported that after murdering her with a blow to her head with a dumbbell, Shahnawaz dumped her body in a bathtub.

    Karachi 6th most affordable city in the world: Report

    Karachi has been ranked as the sixth most affordable city in the world in the Worldwide Cost of Living (WCOL) index 2022 by a report published by Economic Intelligence.

    The WCOL has ranked Damascus (Syria) as the most affordable city of the world followed by Tripoli (Libya), Tehran (Iran), Tunis (Tunisia), Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Karachi (Pakistan).

    The report lists Singapore as the most expensive along with New York City.
    Singapore, bagging the top position for the eighth time in ten years, remains the most expensive in the world, coupled with New York, followed by Tel Aviv (Israel), Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Zurich (Switzerland) in the list of top ten countries.
    The survey was conducted between August 16 and September 16, tracking the prices of 200 goods.

    Pakistanis have vehemently reacted to a viral video which claims that their favourite desi snack, the humble samosa is, in fact, a very unhealthy thing to eat.

    Dr Muhammad Affan Qaiser has made a video about the negative side effects of the fried potato delight. Terming the samosa an “atom bomb of 400 calories”, he said that the average caloric ratio of samosas is between 250-400. He also emphasised the fact that samosas are fried in poor quality oil. “Dada ne tail dala hota hai aur pota us mei se samosa nikaal reha hota hai. (That grandson of the man who poured that oil is still frying in it).”

    The doctor also took exception to the fact that despite how unhealthy the samosa is, it is available in all high-end restaurants and universities.

  • Pakistan has the highest number of Hepatitis C patients in the world

    Pakistan now has the highest rate of Hepatitis C infections, with over 500,000 people getting the disease since 2015, Geo has reported.
    According to Dr. Homie Razavi, an epidemiologist at the Centre for Disease Analysis (CDA) in the United States, Pakistan has the highest global prevalence of Hepatitis C infections, with an estimated 10 million persons affected.

    “Pakistan is now home to the world’s largest population of patients living with Hepatitis C, surpassing even China, India and Nigeria. We have been working for the last two years with various provincial health departments in Pakistan and following detailed research and analysis, we found that around half a million new Hepatitis C infections emerged in Pakistan from 2015 to 2021. The total number of Hepatitis C patients is estimated to be 10 million in Pakistan, the highest in the world,” Dr Razavi told a news briefing in Karachi.

    Suggesting that Pakistan should learn from Egypt which has successfully brought down it’s rate of the potentially fatal virus. In 2015, Egypt had the fourth-highest number of Hepatitis C infections; today, it has the seventeenth-highest number. According to Dr. Razavi, Egypt established a national programme to screen its whole population and treated everyone who tested positive.

    Twitter approves of Abrar-ul-Haq’s new song for PTI

    Pakistani singer-turned-politician Abrar-ul-Haq has sung a song titled “Hai Haq Hamara Azaadi” for his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

    The song was released by Haq’s YouTube channel on 26 November and has managed to get more than 70,000 views so far.

    The party chief Imran Khan also shared the song on his official Twitter account and said “it’s a great Tarana about Haqeeqi Azadi”.

    He further wrote that only truly free (Azad) nations “fulfill their immense human potential to rise and become Iqbal’s Shaheen.”

  • World AIDS Day: PM vows to end stigma attached with HIV

    Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has shared a message on World AIDS Day, calling the increasing incidence of HIV “deeply worrying”.

    From his twitter, the Premier wrote, “The increasing incidence of HIV & AIDS among the children & adolescents is deeply worrying. I urge the Ministry of Health to focus on awareness about testing, prevention & treatment to fight scourge. On World AIDS Day today, let us all vow to end the stigma attached with HIV.”

    The number of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections is on the rise in the country, particularly in Sindh and Islamabad.

  • LHC sends notification to Punjab Govt to submit reply on ‘Joyland’ ban

    In response to a petition challenging a ban on the screening of the movie Joyland in the province, the Lahore High Court on Wednesday sent notices to the Punjab government and the film censor board.

    The petition was filed by the Distribution Club (Pvt.) Limited and film’s co-producer Sana Zahra while advocate Usama Khawar is representing the petition.

    Khawar claimed that both the national and provincial film censor boards had initially given the movie the go-ahead for nationwide release in Pakistan in August 2022.

    He said that the challenged prohibition order was a prime example of a non-speaking order because the respondent provincial government did not apply any thought or reasoning to it, and no justifications were given.

    Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabbir heard the arguments made by the attorney before sending notifications to the respondent requesting that they submit their responses by December 13.

    Digital creator Syed Muzamil Hasan Zaidi is under fire again for not acknowledging his privilege, and trying to prove that he belongs to a “middle-class family.”

    During Tuesday’s episode of Shehzad Ghias Shaikh’s podcast Muzamil talked about his early life and his education at one of the most renowned and expensive schools, The Beaconhouse School System.

    Ghias pointed out that Muzamil portrays him as a self-made man and talks about his struggles, however, his sister has studied at an elite private university, Lahore University of Management Sciences, and he always lived in an elite area.

    Responding to this, Muzamil said that his sister studied at the university only with financial aid and stressed that he had grown up in a middle-class household.

    When asked by Ghias that when did he go to the United States (US) for the first time, he replied, “In 9th grade.”

    Islamabad Police intensifies crackdown against vehicles with tinted windows

    Islamabad capital police stepped up their enforcement of the law against cars with tinted windows and black paper. In order to combat the vehicles, special squads have been formed.

    The Islamabad police believe that it is their moral obligation to promote road safety while upholding the law, hence they intend to implement a zero-tolerance policy.

    The Excise and Taxation Department and the Islamabad Transport Authority also fined 65 automobiles for having decorative or non-pattern licence plates, while 30 vehicles received fines for having tinted windows.

    Tinted glass and fancy license plates were on the administration’s radar, thus the action was carried out on the direction of Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon.

    According to a release from ICT, the administration advised taking strict action against smoke-emitting cars and those operating without valid licenses. The Excise officers and traffic police physically checked automobiles at G-14, Srinagar Highway, and E&T Department, where 65 vehicles had their non-pattern and fancy number plates removed.

    The ICT administration declared that its campaign against tinted glasses and road safety measures was in full swing and added that commercial cars lacking fitness certificates would not be permitted on the roads at any cost since there must be no compromise on public safety.

    Husband slaughters wife and three daughters in Karachi before attempting suicide

    A resident of Karachi, identified as Fawad, killed his wife and three daughters in Shamsi Society in Malir before attempting suicide. He is now admitted in a hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

    Local police have said that they found the bloodied remains of a woman aged 38 and three girls, 16, 12, and 10 in the house.

    According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sajid Sadozai, the man first killed his daughters then his wife with a sharp-edged tool as a knife has been recovered from the scene. He also added the incident was the result of an internal dispute within the family.

    “The suspect, a sales manager at a spice-selling company by profession, tried to commit suicide after killing his wife and daughters,” the police official said.

    The SSP said the house was locked from the inside after the murders, “which indicates the suspect was behind the killings”.

    When the incident happened, Fawad’s brother, whose family lives just one floor below Fawad’s, was at work and the neighbours were also unaware of the incident.
