    61% drinking water in the country unsafe to drink: report presented to Parliament

    The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources has revealed that 61 per cent of drinking water in Pakistan is unsafe. The research also revealed that 93 per cent of water in Sindh’s capital Karachi is also unsafe. As per research, the water in 29 major cities is dangerously unsafe.

    “Overall, 62 per cent of the drinking water quality of these [29] major cities is unsafe. Underground water of these cities is full of turbidity, hardness, chloride, TDS, bacteriological and other chemicals,” reads the research produced by the PCRWR, which was presented before parliament earlier this month.

    “Long-term consumption of arsenic beyond the safe level may result in various health implications — symptoms of long-term exposure to high levels of inorganic arsenic which ultimately is developing skin cancer,” read the official document.

    Instagram music feature was introduced in June 2018 but due to some legal issues, it was not available in Pakistan. Reportedly, Instagram did not acquire a music license for this region earlier, which is why Pakistani users would get a message, “Instagram Music is not available in your region.”

    Now Pakistani users will be able to use the Instagram music feature and add any music genre of their choice from all over the world.

    To add this feature, you are required to tap on the sticker option and add the music feature to photos and videos in your stories.

    You can either choose from the dropdown list or browse music of your choice to add to your stories.

    An 80-year-old woman in the US, who was being held hostage by an intruder, was saved because she had not texted her daily Wordle score to one of her daughters. Wordle is a popular word game, which has recently been bought by the New York Times.

    According to media reports, Denyse Holt was woken up by a naked man with a knife in the middle of the night. The 32-year-old intruder also disconnected her phones and took two knives from her kitchen before taking her to the basement and locking her there for 17 hours without food or medication. “I didn’t think I was going to live,” she told CBS Chicago.

    Her daughter in Seattle thought something was off when her mother did not text her daily Wordle score. “I didn’t send my older daughter a Wordle in the morning and that was disconcerting to her,” said Holt.

    Friends and family alerted the police, who found a broken window on the first floor of the home and blood when they arrived at Holt’s home. Police told CBS Chicago that the intruder, James H. Davis III, was taken into custody and is facing felony charges. He continued to refuse to surrender but was eventually caught by the police. Davis was charged with home invasion, aggravated kidnapping while armed with a weapon and two counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer.

    Two girls allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped in Mirpurkhas, Sindh

    Two females including a minor were allegedly kidnapped, gang-raped, and paraded naked in the Naukot area of Mirpurkhas district in Sindh on Monday. There was a dispute between the Tangri and Rajput communities over a free-will marriage.

    The incident took place because a woman from the Tangri community fled from home to marry a man belonging to the Rajput family.

    Geo reported that over 20 men of the Tangri community raided the house of Muhammad Hanif Rajpoot and abducted two girls from his family.

    The victims were rescued after 20 hours when the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPA of Mir Tariq Talpur took notice of the incident.

    Dr Zebunisa Kolachi who conducted an initial examination confirmed that both girls were raped.

    Both victims revealed more details about the horrific incident which they faced.

    They said, “Both of us were stripped off our clothes, forced to parade naked, and then raped by many men for hours during detention at an unknown location.”

    The First Investigation Report (FIR) has been filed on the complainant, Ali Raza Rajput who is the husband of one of the abducted victims.

    The relatives of the victims protested regarding the heinous act in the town and also alleged that the police of the Naukot area is reluctant to arrest the assailants.

    The parents of the victims said, “Nobody feels safe from people of these gangs of Tangri community but the police of Naukot town have never bothered to take any action against them.”

    Parents also revealed that the Tangri gang also took away valuable goods, gold, and cash at a gunpoint from the house.

    Police have arrested 12 suspects who were nominated in the FIR.

    On the instructions of a ‘fake Aamil’, a pregnant woman hammered a nail into her head to give birth to a son in Peshawar. She was injured and rushed to Lady Reading Hospital, and underwent emergency surgery to remove the nail from her skull.

    According to the statement given by the victim, the ‘Aamil’ instructed her to hammer a nail into her skull.

    The statement further revealed that her husband was pressurising her wife to give birth to a son. She has three children including two sons and a daughter. Her husband threatened to divorce her and remarry if she could not give birth to a son.

    When she found out that she was about to deliver a daughter again from an ultrasound, she decided to visit an aamil as the last option.

    The neurosurgeon, Dr Haider Suleman, who treated her revealed that she had a serious head injury and her pregnancy was making recovery more difficult. The woman left the hospital with her family after treatment and police are now searching for the couple.

    The police have found the couple’s names from hospital records. However, they could not get their National Identity Card (CNIC) details.

    The senior superintendent of police (SSP) said that the couple resides in Peshawar and police would trace them soon, adding, “an investigation team has been formed under SP city for the purpose.”

    The Capital City Police Peshawar (CCPO), Abbas Ahsan said, “legal action will be taken against her husband and the culprits involved.”

    He also directed victim support officers to visit the woman to counsel her and get details of the incident.

    Court sentences Hindu teacher to life in prison over ‘blasphemy’ charges

    A session court sentenced a Hindu teacher, Nautan Lal, to life imprisonment over charges of ‘blasphemy’ in Ghotki, a district in Sindh. He was fined Rs50,000 as well, reports SAMAA News.

    The verdict was announced by the additional session judge, Mumtaz Ali Solangi today. The court took two years to convict Nautan Lal who has been in jail since 2019 as an undertrial prisoner.

    According to the verdict, he is charged with Section 265-H of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

    A case was also registered against Lal under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). He was accused of passing derogatory remarks about the Holy Prophet P.B.U.H

    He was sent back to Central jail in Sukkur. His requests for bail have been rejected twice for the past two years.

    In September 2019, a video was circulated across social media in which an intermediate student claimed that the owner of Ghotki’s Sindh Public Higher Secondary School committed blasphemy.

    Member of Jamaat Ahle Sunnat, Mufti Adul Karim Sayeedi registered a blasphemy case against the school owner.

    However, teachers clarified that the Nautan Lal did not teach at the school but he just visited on that day. He used to teach Physics at Government Degree College Ghotki.

    A protest erupted in the town and a violent mob attacked the Hindu Temple in Ghotki and damaged its idols.

    An 18-year-old unmarried girl with mental health challenges was found to be five months pregnant when she went to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre’s (JPMC) emergency with complaints of abdominal pain on January 20, reports Samaa News.

    A doctor sent her for an ultrasound for diagnosis, which revealed that she is about five months pregnant. The family members who accompanied her were shocked.

    After being questioned by her relatives, she said that she was raped five months ago by her neighbour, Muhammad Mukhtar, who is a policeman.

    The victim recalled the full incident that the accused called her in his house when the victim’s family went to attend a funeral. She said that she was slapped and dragged by Mukhtar into a room where he raped her at gunpoint.

    The victim was brought to the medico-legal section of JPMC for examination. A Woman Medico-Legal Officer (WMLO) wrote a report in which she mentioned that it was difficult to prove rape after five months.

    The victim’s father filed a case against the accused at the South Woman Police Station on January 24.

    The next day, her family members and neighbours gathered outside the police station on Sharah-e Faisal for protest and demanded the arrest of the accused.

    Late night on January 25, the accused, Muhammad Mukhtar, surrendered before District South Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation-I. The case did not make any further progress even though the accused was arrested.

    South SSP Investigation-I, Dr Farrukh Raza, said that WMLO issued a Medico-Legal Certificate which has shown that she is pregnant but it did not mention proof of rape. SSP said, “The police will have to wait for the delivery of the baby to get the forensic evidence.”

    “A paternity test will confirm who raped the woman,” he added.

    A woman donated part of her liver to save her husband’s life in Sindh, reports Geo.

    After the operation, the woman said that they have been married for ten years but they have no children and her husband is everything for her. She also said that she can donate every organ of her body just to save her husband’s life. In the video, the woman looked happy with a smile on her face.

    The reporter asked her how is she feeling about donating her jigar (liver), to which she said, “He is my jigar.” She added that she loves her husband a lot.

    The successful and free liver transplant was performed at Abdul Qadir Shah Jilani Institute of Medical Sciences, Gambat, Khairpur. According to doctors, both the husband and wife are healthy after the operation.

    Consumer court fines salon Rs 60,000 for not completing bride’s makeup

    Lahore consumer court judge, Waseem Afzal Mian, imposed a fine of Rs60,000 on a salon for not completing the makeup of a bride. The case was filed by Dr Shazia, reports, SAMAA News.

    According to the complainant, she made a booking for her cousin for bridal makeup from the salon on September 30, 2021, for the wedding event on October 16.

    The management of the salon asked for the payment of Rs10,000 for the services and took Rs5,000 in advance.

    When they came on the wedding day, the remaining amount was paid when makeup started. However, the salon asked for another Rs15,000 during makeup.

    When the extra amount was not paid, the beautician refused to complete the makeup of the bride and forced them out of the salon.

    The bride had to complete her makeup from a different salon.

    The plaintiff requested to impose a fine of Rs1 million on the salon for causing mental distress and ruining the special day of the bride.

    The salon administration did not appear in the court despite the various notices sent to them.

  • Orphan to get CNIC after four years

    The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has confirmed that Muhammad Ahsan, an orphan who has been trying to get a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) for four years will finally get his identity card within a week.

    Nadra responded to a tweet of SAMAA News correspondent Irfanul Haque and confirmed that they would issue a CNIC.

    Nadra chairman has taken notice of an incident and gave directions to the concerned authority to resolve the issue at its earliest.

    A few days back, an abandoned orphan, Muhammad Ahsan, a resident of Orangi Town in Karachi, approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) and filed a petition against Nadra under section 199 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) for not issuing a CNIC.

    Ahsan had been trying to get CNIC for four years to get admission to a university but every time he did, Nadra refused to let him apply for an identity card. He was asked to come with blood relatives.
