Student in US harrased for highlighting Palestinians, Uighurs in her graduation speech

Huda, a Muslim student, in the United States (US) became the target of racial insults by parents and students for highlighting the plight of Palestinians and Uighurs in her graduation speech.

“Our lips are yet free. Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves and stand up for any injustice that you see,” Huda said in her speech

“Educate yourself about international dilemmas including the ethnic cleansings of Palestinians and Uighur Muslims. Families are continuously torn apart and real human lives are being lost but ignored. Educate yourself on the widespread issues that plague our planet and threaten our very existence in the long run,” she added.

Huda further said, “Consider global warming with the gravity that it needs to be looked at with and never stop speaking about these issues until they are resolved.”

Huda was asked to ‘go back to Pakistan’ and was harassed by fellow students and their parents.

One of the students can be heard in the video saying, “Why did not you say anything about Hamas? Hamas would have been nice.”

VIDEO: News presenter demands his salary during live broadcast

A Zambian news presenter lost his cool and demanded his unpaid salary during a live news broadcast on Saturday night.

The news anchor for Zambian KBN TV, Kabinda Kalimina, initially gave a roundup of the top stories and then he went off-script and demanded his salary and the salaries of his colleagues who were not paid for their work.

“Away from the news, ladies and gentlemen, we are human beings. We have to get paid. Unfortunately, on KBN we haven’t been paid. People are getting instruments on KBN…Sharon and everyone else haven’t been paid, including myself. We have to get paid,” Kalimina said in a video clip of the broadcast that is doing rounds on social media.

Condemning Kalimina’s actions, the channel issued a statement and claimed Kalimina’s rant as “drunken behaviour”. The television station also claimed that Kalimina is a part-time newscaster.

According to the statement which was signed by Kennedy Mambwe, the owner and chief executive officer of KBN TV, the organization has a “well-established grievance procedures” through which employees of the channel can register their complaints.

However, the statement did not clarify if the channel had or hadn’t paid it’s staff salary.

“As KBN TV, we are appalled with the drunken behaviour exhibited through a video clip that has gone viral on social media and staged by one of our part-time presenters during what should have been the main news bulletin last night. As a young television station, we work with a very highly talented and professional team, with a noble character and we owe the success of unbroken broadcasting for the last two years to such gallant men and women. Members of the public may wish to know that KBN TV like any other institution, has very well-established grievance procedures for all members of staff through which they can channel their complaints.

The statement added that the management was looking into the matter and that anyone who had helped Kalimina in his stunt would face disciplinary action.

“As management, we are carrying out investigations to determine how a drunken part-time presenter found himself on air unabated and disciplinary action will be taken against anyone who may have been party to the scheme.”

Customer leaves $16,000 tip at a restaurant in US

A customer left a $16,000 tip at a restaurant in the United States after ordering $37.93 worth of food and drinks earlier this month.

As per reports, the anonymous customer gave the generous tip to his order of two chili dogs, fried pickle chips and a few cocktails on June 12 at the Stumble Inn Bar and Grill in Londonderry.

“He’s kind of a mystery man,” bartender Michelle McCudden told NBC News. “I’ve been doing this a very long time and I never thought anything like this would happen to me.”

Restaurant owner Mike Zarella said he first thought he misread the receipt.

“I thought it was a mistake,” he said. “Typo.”

He was told by his staff members that the friendly customer assured them it was no joke.

Staff members at the restaurant divide the night’s tips evenly but the eight waiters working that evening wanted to extend the gift of generosity to the cooks too.

McCudden said everybody was extremely thankful for the customer’s kindness particularly after the pandemic forced more than 110,000 restaurants and bars to shut their doors in the past year.

“We went up and we thanked him,” McCudden said. “It’s just been a really rough year for all of us. For someone to do something like that really restored my faith in humanity.”

  • Bangladeshi cleric issues fatwa against Facebook’s laughing emoji

A cleric in Bangladesh has issued fatwa against Facebook’s laughing (haha) emoji, Geo News has reported. The cleric named, Ahmadullah, has huge social media presence, with more than three million followers on Facebook and YouTube.

On Saturday (June 19), he posted a three-minute video in which he discussed the mocking of people on Facebook and issued a fatwa, explaining how it is “totally haram” (forbidden) for Muslims.

“Nowadays we use Facebook’s haha emojis to mock people,” Ahmadullah said in the video, adding, “If we react with haha emojis purely out of fun and the same was intended by the person who posted the content, it’s fine.”

“But if your reaction was intended to mock or ridicule people who posted or made comments on social media, it’s totally forbidden in Islam,” he added.

“For God’s sake, I request you to refrain from this act. Do not react with ‘haha’ to mock someone. If you hurt a Muslim, he may respond with bad language that would be unexpected.”

The video has at least two million views.

  • Study shows AstraZeneca, Pfizer vaccines effective against Delta Covid-19 variants

Study shows AstraZeneca, Pfizer vaccines effective against Delta Covid-19 variants

COVID-19 vaccines made by AstraZeneca and the Pfizer-BioNTech alliance remain broadly effective against Delta and Kappa variants of the COVID-19 which were first identified in India, according to a scientific study.

According to the details, the study by Oxford University researchers, published in the journal Cell, examined the ability of antibodies in the blood from people, who were vaccinated with the two-shot regimens, to neutralize the highly contagious Delta and Kappa variants, a statement said.

“There is no evidence of widespread escape suggesting that the current generation of vaccines will provide protection against the B.1.617 lineage,” the paper said, referring to the Delta and Kappa variants by a commonly used code.

However, the concentration of neutralising antibodies in the blood was somewhat reduced, which may lead to some breakthrough infections, they warned.

Last week, an analysis by the Public Health England (PHE) showed that vaccines made by Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and AstraZeneca offer high protection of more than 90% against hospitalization from the Delta variant.

“We are encouraged to see the non-clinical results published from Oxford and these data, alongside the recent early real-world analysis from Public Health England, provide us with a positive indication that our vaccine can have significant impact against the Delta variant,” AstraZeneca executive Mene Pangalos said in a separate statement.

The Delta variant is becoming the globally dominant version of the disease, the World Health Organization’s chief scientist said on Friday.

The Oxford researchers also analysed reinfection patterns in people who had previously had COVID-19. The risk of reinfection with the Delta variant appeared particularly high in individuals previously infected by the Beta and Gamma lineages that emerged in South Africa and Brazil, respectively.

By contrast, previous infection with the Alpha, or B117, variant first detected in Britain, conferred “reasonable” cross-protection against all variants of concern, lending itself as a template that next-generation vaccines could be molded on.

“B117 might be a candidate for new variant vaccines to provide the broadest protection,” the researchers said.

  • Pakistan introduces sugar-free mangoes

Three varieties of sugar-free mangoes for diabetic patients have been introduced in Pakistan, reports ARY News. The newly introduced variety of mangoes have been made after a scientific modification at a private agriculture farm in Sindh’s Tando Allahyar, and are introduced by M H Panhwar Farms after almost five years of research.

The sugar-free mangoes are available with the names of Sonaro, Glenn and Keitt in the local market.

“The government of Pakistan had conferred Sitara-e-Imtiaz on Mr Panhwar for his research related to fruits, including mangoes and banana. After his death, I continued his work and carried out modification after importing different genres of mangoes [from foreign countries] to test its growth in this atmosphere and soil,” mango expert Ghulam Sarwar told ARY News. Sarwar is also M H Panhwar’s nephew.

“This project is being run on a personal basis and we are not taking any assistance from the government. I just want to introduce these varieties at the national and international level. We think about national interests but are not [using this project] for gaining profits for us.”
