    Élan’s Khadijah Shah denies accusations of torturing employee

    Élan’s Khadijah Shah seems to have found herself in controversy yet again. A video of a man claiming to be imprisoned by the designer in her warehouse since the past six months is doing the rounds on social media.

    According to the man in the video, Shah, the founder and Creative Director of Pakistan’s leading luxury clothing brand, has not paid the worker for two months and has refused to let him leave the warehouse where business operations take place. The man added that Shah along with her associate Rehan Bashir has exploited 144 other labourers along with him and has refused to let them leave the warehouse.

    “I worked for their Élan Lawn 2020 project. They asked to bring in extra labour to which I obliged. However, when I asked for payment, my staff and I were imprisoned here. We are being humiliated every day,” he said.

    Soon after the allegations surfaced, Khadijah responded to them on Instagram saying that the man had stolen from her and was now seeking revenge for being terminated.

    Khadija said that the man in the video was in the packing department from where he had stolen over 7000 pieces of Élan lawn.

    The designer added that the matter came to light when a huge amount of inventory was missing and customers began to file complaints for missing pieces. She said they had to halt dispatches due to incomplete orders. Shah added that an FIR has also been registered against the former employee and that he has asked her for forgiveness.

    Shah further said that she is not one of those who put people in dungeons and torture them.

    Later, the designer also cracked a joke on the situation, saying “After I torture people in dungeons with Rehan Bashir, we eat lots of dessert.”

    Shah is one of Pakistan’s most renowned designers. Her brand Élan had also designed an outfit for Kate Middleton when she came to Pakistan.

    A small-scale miner in Tanzania has become an overnight millionaire after uncovering two of the country’s precious tanzanite stones.

    Saniniu Kuryan Laizer, 52, found the stones having a combined weight of 15kg (33 lb). Laizer sold the stones to the country’s mining ministry and earned £2.4m (Rs 561,000,000)

     “There will be a big party tomorrow,” Laizer, a father of more than 30 children, told the BBC.

    Tanzanite is a very rare stone that is only found in northern Tanzania and is used to make ornaments.

    The precious stone’s appeal lies in its variety of types and colours, including green, red, purple and blue. Its value is determined by rarity – the finer the colour or clarity, the higher the price.

    President of Tanzania John Magufuli called Laizer to congratulate him. “This is the benefit of small-scale miners and this proves that Tanzania is rich,” the president said.

    Peshawar High Court allows woman to change her sex

    The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday granted a young woman permission to undergo sex reassignment surgery (SRS) to become a man and directed the administration of Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) to facilitate her.

    According to a report in Dawn, the order was issued by a division bench, which heard a petition filed by the woman requesting the court to allow her the surgery. The case was discussed in detail in light of the Constitution, transgender rights act and other medico-legal aspects.

    The petitioner’s lawyer Saifullah Muhib Kakakhel argued that it is the woman’s constitutional right to opt for any surgery or procedure to change her sex as per her desire. He added that Section 2 of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018 also gives permission to his client to have her gender changed.

    According to Kakakhel, the petitioner was diagnosed with gender dysphoria, a condition that involves a conflict between a person’s internal gender identity and the biological sex assigned to them at birth and that it can be treated through SRS. He told the court that his client felt and acted like a man since childhood, even though she looked like a woman because of which she suffered great mental stress.

    After examining the case in detail, the bench granted the petitioner the permission and ordered the HMC to facilitate her and present a report on the matter within three months. The report is to detail the sexual status of the petitioner and whether it is possible for her to undergo sex reassignment surgery as well as the risks involved; the medico-legal aspects of the case and how the hospital can facilitate the petitioner.

    This is not the first time courts in Pakistan are hearing such a case. In 2015, a resident of Kohat successfully transitioned from female to male after undergoing surgery at a local hospital and later got engaged to a childhood friend. In the same year, two sisters in Chakwal had a sex change after doctors declared them male following a physical examination.

    Unilever Pakistan on Thursday announced that it would rename it’s skin lightening cream ‘Fair and Lovely’ and stop using the word ‘fair’ to become more inclusive.

    According to reports, the new name of the product would be announced after the needed regulatory approval.

    In a statement, the brand said: “The brand is committed to celebrating all skin tones.”

    Unilever Pakistan Chairman and CEO Amir Paracha, speaking on the matter said: “Unilever is an organisation that is evolving continuously, and today we have taken the next bold step in our evolution by committing to a more inclusive and diverse portrayal of beauty. This ambition has been in the works for some time with significant steps such as the removal of the dual-faced cameo and shade guides from the packaging of Fair & Lovely in 2019.”

    In addition to the changes to Fair & Lovely, the rest of the brand’s skincare portfolio would also reflect the new vision of positive beauty, the statement said.

    The company’s skin lightening range of products have been strongly criticised for promoting stereotypes against people with darker skin.

    The move comes after the cosmetics companies faced a severe criticism on social media in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement.

    Earlier, Johnson & Johnson said it would stop selling skin-whitening creams.

  • Groundbreaking: Islamabad to get its first Hindu temple

    In a first, a ceremony was held to start construction of a Hindu temple in the federal capital, Dawn reported.

    According to reports, a crematorium will also be built in Islamabad for the Hindu community, members of which earlier had to travel out of the city to perform religious rituals.

    The Krishna temple will be constructed on a 20,000 sq ft plot in the H-9 sector, and has been named Shri Krishna Mandir by the Islamabad Hindu Panchayat.

    According to Religious Affairs Minister Pir Noorul Haq Qadri, the government will bear the construction cost, presently estimated to be Rs100,000,000.

    Parliamentary Secretary on Human Rights Lal Chand Malhi had on Tuesday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the temple.

    While addressing the gathering at the ceremony, Malhi mentioned the presence of pre-1947 era temple structures in the capital and its adjoining areas, including one in Saidpur Village and at the hill point overlooking the Korang River near Rawal Lake. However, they have been abandoned and not used.

    “Besides, there is no crematorium in Islamabad,” he said, adding the Hindu population in Islamabad had increased significantly in two decades, therefore, the temple was necessary.

    “The Hindu community in Islamabad has been demanding a temple for a long time now. The population has also increased while many Hindu temple structures in the capital have been abandoned,” he said. “Besides, there is no crematorium in Islamabad.”

    The plot on which the temple is being built was allotted to the Hindu Panchayat by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in 2017. However, the construction work could not begin on time because of some formalities, like the site map’s approval by the CDA and other authorities.

    Patient dies after ‘family unplugs ventilator to turn on air cooler’

    A 40-year-old man died at a hospital after his family members allegedly unplugged the ventilator he was on to plug in an air cooler.

    Hospital authorities said a three-member committee will probe the incident.

    According to reports, the patient, who was suspected to be suffering from COVID-19, was brought to the ICU of the government-run hospital in the Kota city of India’s Rajasthan state on June 13. His test report, however, came negative later.

    The man was shifted to an isolation ward on June 15 as a safety measure after another patient in the ICU tested positive for the disease.

    Since it was very hot in the isolation ward, his family members bought an air cooler the same day. On finding no socket for the cooler, they allegedly unplugged the ventilator.

    They immediately informed doctors and medical staff, who administered CPR upon the patient, but he died.

    Hospital Superintendent Dr Naveen Saxena said the committee comprising the deputy superintendent, nursing superintendent and chief medical officer on duty will probe the incident and submit a report.

    The committee has recorded statements of medical staff in the isolation ward but the family members of the deceased patient are not responding to the panel, he alleged.

    The family members allegedly did not seek permission to plug in the cooler and when the patient died, they “misbehaved” with the medical staff and the resident doctor on duty, other hospital authorities said.
