  • Dear male colleagues, Sherry Rehman has a message for you

Dear male colleagues, Sherry Rehman has a message for you

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Vice President and Parliamentary leader Sherry Rehman has highlighted a very common and a misogynistic issue women face in the workplace.

In her latest post on X (formerly Twitter), Rehman alluded to male professionals in Pakistan who discriminate in their manner of addressing female colleagues.

“I am sorry but I cannot allow myself to be called only “Sherry” if the colleagues next to me are called so and so sahibs along with their full names as a mark of respect.

I have no problem if you call me Sherry if you are calling my other male colleagues by their first names too”, she pointed out.

While men in workplaces are commonly referred to as ‘Sir,’ ‘Sahab,’ or by their full name out of respect for their professional status or simply their gender, women, on the other hand, are mostly called by their first name or derogatorily as ‘larki’ or ‘bibi,’ etc.

While professionally, calling someone by their first name is not inherently wrong, using more socially respectful language for men compared to women makes the practice sexist.

This lack of courtesy traditionally stems from the patriarchal idea of deeming women as intellectually and professionally inferior.

Complaint registered against ‘bad mannered’ Ambani wedding in Italy

Ananat Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding events are making waves on social media but locals and police in Portofino were enraged by the loud music and bad manners on display by the wedding party.

While the wedding is set to take place in July, Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in Asia, booked the whole Italian village of Portofino and took over 800 guests there for a four-day cruise.

While the guests must have enjoyed the luxury, locals, and tourists who were stopped from accessing the main attractions were less than thrilled and took to social media to voice their disappointment.

“Many billionaires have come to party here, but no one has ever taken away access to the main part of the city. Who do they think they are? They can’t just come in and throw their party and make it difficult for people to do their daily chores,” Express Tribune quoted an angry local.

Another News source reported that a number of complaints were registered to the police as the cruise pulled into the port of Genoa and pumped out loud music until dawn.
The manager of the Puny restaurant in Genoa refused to serve lobster sandwiches to the party-goers despite an offer of 10,000 euros, stating that he found their behaviour to be “offensive, bad-mannered and incorrect.”

“I have my customers and an illustrious history to protect,” added Andrea Miroli, the manager at the restaurant.

The pre-wedding celebration had a long list of guests, including Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, Jeff Bezos, and world-renowned Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli.

Who are Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu? And why is Indian twitter teasing Modi about them?

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, contrary to popular expectations, is seeing a major blow in the elections. The strongman of the right-wing Hindutva BJP, seeking a third term as Premier, could not get a clear majority. While his opponents are celebrating the unexpected result, Indian Twitter is having a riot about Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu, who have emerged as key players in the elections. The two politicians are popular for their secular leanings yet are known for changing their positions frequently.

Indian publications like NDTV are making headlines, such as “Lok Sabha Election 2024 Result: India Congress may send feelers to Chandrababu Naidu, Nitish Kumar.”

The leading coalitions- that of Narendra Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Rahul Gandhi’s Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA)-are trying to include the two in their bloc.

Kumar and Naidu have traditionally allied with the Congress and are meeting with them today. Meanwhile, Twitter users are having a riot with memes.

Gold medalist to shoe-seller; two youths killed in Karachi

Two incidents of youth being robbed and killed in Karachi have been reported in the past three days.

20-year-old Abdul Basit was murdered by two robbers upon resistance near the Nasir Jump area of Korangi. He belonged to Quetta and used to sell slippers.

An investigation has revealed that Basit had given money and mobile phones to the robbers but the robbers still shot him dead.

Another incident that is making waves is the death of 27-year-old Itteqa Moin, a gold medalist mechanical engineer, and Hafiz-e-Quran who was killed on Saturday by robbers in Gulshan-i-Iqbal. The young man was pursuing an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration and got married a year ago.

CCTV footage shows Itteqa returning from a bakery run when he was halted by two armed men on a motorcycle. They snatched his motorcycle, mobile phone, and cash, and started beating him, eventually shooting him dead.

The family claims that the incident took place near their home and Itteqa had not put up resistance but was killed while the police’s version says that he did show “some resistance” and this provoked the robbers to open fire at him.

SHO of the area has been suspended over failure to control crimes while the police investigation is ongoing.

Police said that in Korangi Crossing, citizens caught two robbers and handed them over to the police in a severely injured condition. One of them died of serious injuries from the violence while the condition of the other is critical.

However, the robber who was handed over to the police was not involved in the murder of Abdul Basit.

Dawn’s Imtiaz Ali reported on April 5 this year that data presented in front of a high-level committee shows that more than 250 Karachiites were shot dead and 1,052 others were wounded by street criminals between 2022 and March 28, 2024.
