‘Will personally announce date of protest march’: Imran Khan

Founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan stated on Monday that he will personally announce the date of an upcoming protest march.

Speaking to journalists at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, the former Prime Minister said that with full preparation, he will call for an upcoming March protest against the incumbent government; Imran Khan’s X (formerly Twitter) account posted the message.

Imran Khan’s message noted: “Our action plan was announced during the rally at Swabi. This time, our protest will continue, and our people will not go back to their homes until the constitution, democracy, and judicial independence are restored and our innocent workers and leaders are freed.”

Earlier, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur on Saturday, while addressing the Swabi rally, had already predicted that the jailed founder of PTI would soon announce the date of the protest in the ongoing month (November).

“I am conveying Imran Khan’s message to you that Khan will call for the date of the March protest this month (November), which would be that this time, when we leave, we will inform our families that if we do not return home, perform our funeral prayers,” CM KP Ali Amin Gandapur quoted incarcerated Imran Khan message in a Swabi rally on Saturday.

Referring to the PTI’s potential march on Islamabad, Gandapur firmly stated: “We will not return until the release of the PTI founder.”

Responding to the decision-maker power in his party, Ali Amin Gandapur said that only party founder Imran Khan has the power to make decisions in the PTI.

Jailed Imran Khan further said that he is ready to make every sacrifice to achieve genuine freedom for Pakistan.

Furthermore, the founder of PTI also directed the PTI officials, members of parliament, organisers, party ticket holders, workers, and supporters to finalise preparations and begin efforts for on-ground mobilisation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister (PM) Advisor for Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, while appearing on the Geo News programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath,’ warned, “When they (PTI) speak about wearing shrouds, funeral prayers (…) they are giving a free hand to law enforcers to launch a crackdown against them.”

Rana Sanaullah advised that PTI should demand to hold a “democratic and peaceful” protest or rally to fulfil its demands instead of a “do or die” March call towards Islamabad.

PM Advisor for Political Affairs further said that the incarcerated PTI founder wished the opposition to be eliminated through the establishment.

Criticising the founder of PTI’s harsh policy of “will not spare anyone,” Sanaullah maintained: “His [PTI founder] stubbornness led himself and the country to trouble.”

Iddat case direct consequence of overseas PTI followers’ attack on Generals: Sher Afzal Marwat

In yet another controversy, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) maverick leader Sher Afzal Marwat blamed overseas PTI protestors’ targeting of state institutions for the predicaments of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“We have been subjected to unsurmountable oppression – what is the reason behind it? This punishment being given to us is due to the inexcusable actions of PTI’s digital media followers,” remarked Marwat on ABN News.

“If they protest within limits and do not hurl abuses at Pakistan’s state institutions. We have never given them permission to abuse our state institutions using PTI’s platform. Believe me, even this Iddat case that was made up against Khan – that case was a direct consequence of those overseas digital adventurists. They named and hurled abuses at Pakistan Army Generals, and made up fake scandals of actresses, which is why we suffered,” revealed Sher Afzal Marwat.

Marwat, known for being outspoken, often faces challenges from within his party. In May 2024, Marwat was kicked out of PTI’s core and political committees on the direction of party founder Imran Khan following his remarks about Saudi Arabia. Marwat, in an interview, alleged that the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia was behind Khan’s ouster from power.

Then, in August this year, PTI official page on X, formerly Twitter, announced the cancellation of the basic party membership of maverick leader Sher Afzal Marwat for a “gross violation/ breach” of discipline.

Yet confusion spread quickly when PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan termed the notification “fake.”

“The notification regarding the cancellation of Sher Afzal Marwat’s membership is fake. It’s not possible,” stated Gohar, clearly signalling rifts within the party leadership over Marwat’s future.

In the notification, it was said that Marwat was on notice and was asked to “restrict himself, and his statements to within the limitation as outlined in the letter. A committee was set up to monitor his statements, media appearances and tweets.”

Furthermore, the last controversy took place when Marwat was called out by PTI’s Salman Akram Raja when he said, “Sher Afzal Marwat must control himself; we are giving him a chance if he wants to play a role in the party if he does not show discipline, we will take action.”

It all started when Sher Afzal Marwat while talking to Matiullah Jan, stated that he did not vote for the Hamid Khan group in the recent Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections. “I did not want to vote for Hamid Khan’s candidates in the SCBA, neither did I want to vote for the other group’s candidates, so I did not vote,” said Marwat.

Matiullah Jan, with a surprising reaction, asked Marwat whether his action put PTI at a disadvantage.

He replied: “How did I put PTI at a disadvantage? Hamid Khan passes some statements or other arguments against me. He should be thankful that I did not campaign against his candidates; otherwise, I could have had 30-40 votes. Nobody came to me to ask for any votes.”

In a deleted post on X, Marwat wrote: “I am very saddened by the statement issued by Mr Salman Akram Raja adv against me. I was willing to work with you, but neither you are my boss nor do you have any authority to control me. Please bear in mind for all times I am only answerable to Khan sb and Chairman Barrister Gohar. Nobody else matters. Thank you.”

  • Govt blocks passports of 23 individuals involved in attack on Qazi Faez Isa

Govt blocks passports of 23 individuals involved in attack on Qazi Faez Isa

The Pakistani passports of 23 persons allegedly involved in the attack on former Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa have been blocked.

Appearing on Geo, journalist Asif Bashir Chaudhry claimed that 23 Pakistanis had been traced through the help of CCTV footage, including former Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Maleeka Ali Bokhari, who was involved in the alleged attack on ex-CJP Qazi Faiz Isa.

The passports were blocked following strong reactions from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi last month, who had vowed to take stern action against the assaulters in London.

Shayan Ali, a famous Tik Toker known for spearheading PTI protests in London and often seen outside the residence of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, has also been nominated in the Passport Control List (PCL).

Sadia Faheem, Faheem Gulzar, Maheen Faisal, Sadra Tariq, Habba Tariq, Waqas Chohan, Mohsin Haider, Zameer Akram, Sardar Taimoor, Mohammad Pervez Ali, Rukhsana Kausar, Sheikh Mohammad Jameel, Mehran Habib, Zaheer Ahmad, Rehman Anwar, Mohammad Sadiq Khan, Khadija Kashif, Mohammad Naveed Afzal, Shehzad Qureshi, Suleman Ali Shah, and Bilal Anwar, are among those whose passports have also been revoked.

Asif Bashir Chaudhry further revealed: “The 23 names involved in the attack on ex-CJP Qazi Faez Isa are not dual nationals except two.”

Citing Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime case no 3,906/2024 against 23 Pakistanis, Chaudhry stated: “As soon as these suspects land in Pakistan legally, they will be arrested instantly.”

FIA included 153 other names on the list, which reportedly are dual nationals, a journalist said.

In October, dozens of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf followers and party leaders, including Sayed Zulfi Bukhari, Sahibzada Jahangir and former MNA Maleeka Bokhari, had protested against former CJP Qazi Faez Isa on his arrival for dinner at Middle Temple in London.

Outside the entrance gate of London’s Middle Temple, PTI followers had chanted, “Go Qazi, Go Qazi.”

Interior Minister on October 30 condemned the attack and ordered the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to block the ID card of those involved in the attack on the Pakistani ambassador in which former CJP Qazi Faez Isa was present.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Interior Ministry wrote, “We cannot remain silent on this incident,” and questioned why there was no security given to the Qazi Faez Isa amid threats.

  • ‘People responsible are not in the city’: Lahore High Court’s thinly veiled criticism of Maryam Nawaz, CS

‘People responsible are not in the city’: Lahore High Court’s thinly veiled criticism of Maryam Nawaz, CS

Lahore High Court’s (LHC) Justice Shahid Karim has reprimanded missing officials of the Punjab Government while also alluding to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman’s absence from the city.

He remarked that the court ordered all kinds of construction work to be stopped for two months, yet it has not been implemented. “Educational institutions are closed, so why are construction sites not being closed,” he asked.

The court questioned WASA’s Senior Legal Advisor Advocate, Mian Irfan Akram, along with the officers and lawyers of the relevant departments.

During the hearing, Justice Shahid Karim said that the Deputy and Assistant Commissioners should go out on roads to perform their duties. He further remarked that the CCPO and DIG should also look for measures being imposed when they go out for work.

The Punjab government submitted a report regarding the measures that have been taken so far to tackle smog before the court. The provincial government’s lawyer said that officials in the administration will go and inspect the lorry and truck stands themselves. He informed the court that three major terminals on the busy Bund Road have been closed.  Meanwhile, 400 vehicles were checked.

The Judge then questioned the officials about the vehicles that were inspected and their condition.
The lawyer replied that 42 vehicles failed the inspection. However, he defended the government by saying: “All the Deputy Commissioners of Punjab will be informed to conduct these  inspections, but because it was Sunday, the Secretary of Transport could not issue instructions.”

To this, Justice Shahid Karim expressed his disappointment and said, “What are you talking about? Look at the situation outside. Every minute is very important. I am ready to hear this case even on Sunday.”

The court further remarked that despite the seriousness of the matter, the transport department did not even come to hear the court proceedings.

The lawyer of the Punjab Government went on to explain that operations were conducted at three bus stands in Lahore while action was taken against 60 exhaust-emitting buses.

Justice Shahid Karim reprimanded the absent Deputy Commissioner Lahore asking could he not work on a Sunday.

One of the members of the Judicial Commission present inside the court said that simply stopping the buses on the roads is not the solution; rather, the buses should not be allowed to leave the bus stand.

Justice Shahid Karim remarked that while the city is battling with smog, “the people responsible are not present in the city.”

Alluding to Chief Minister Punjab’s jibe at the court on the provision of bikes by the government, he said, “I don’t want to go in the details but when the court ordered against government’s policy of providing bikes, some people in the government made fun of it. Do you now have an answer to this.”

The court also expressed anger at the Advocate General Punjab who was not present in the court today, “This is the most important matter, he should have been in the court today, I am very disappointed.”

The court, while talking to the Punjab government’s lawyer, said that you convey my displeasure to them.

Justice Shahid Karim asked what is the procedure for checking the vehicles at the bus stand. Advocate Punjab Government said that vehicles are checked for smoke emission. Justice Shahid Karim remarked that no one from the transport department is in the court, and Advocate General Punjab is not present in the court. “Is this how the government is taking the matter seriously,”  the court asked.

The court recounted that it had been giving orders regarding smog for two years. “The government departments have failed to take steps to control smog as it has worsened in the past two months.”
Additionally, the court remarked, “When you announced the bikes, and I passed the order, then everyone just talked. Now go out and see the situation.”

The court asked about the Chief Secretary of Punjab, who is in Geneva.

Therefore the court remarked that where is the acting chief secretary is and how the province is being run.

Justice Shahid Kareem identified that construction is going on in many places in Lahore, which is the main cause of smog. Schools have been closed, construction would have been closed, is there any order that the deputy commissioner will do? Or there is no such order with respect to the Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner.

In his final remarks, Justice Shahid Karim said that the government should impose duties on DCs and ACs across Punjab and ask them to leave their offices. “Has the government issued any notification that if the vehicle is not in good condition, it will be fined Rs.1 lac.”

He added that a fine of 1500 to 2000 rupees will not change the situation, the necessary measures and notifications should be taken by the government, the government should think seriously to stop the construction.

The court made it a point to mention that “I was hopeful that the current government would do better in this regard, but their actions are not enough. I am not giving any orders; I just want to see what the government does. A decision has to be made regarding construction immediately.”

The court adjourned the hearing till November 12 after seeking reports from various departments.

  • PTA starts blocking unregistered VPNs in Pakistan

PTA starts blocking unregistered VPNs in Pakistan

One day after social media users were facing internet connectivity issues through Virtual Private Networks (VPN) in Pakistan, sources within Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have responded to the development.

Citing safe internet access to users and security risks, sources told Geo News on Monday that the PTA has started the process of banning unregistered and illegal VPNs in Pakistan on Sunday.

PTA reportedly blocked VPNs because it allowed unauthorised access to sensitive data and illegal content for many social media users, sources added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has not issued an official statement yet regarding the initiating process of registering the Virtual Private Networks.

It should be noted here that a number of social media users complained about accessing X (formerly Twitter) through a VPN yesterday.

The use of VPNs has increased in Pakistan since the February general election when the government banned social media platform X. Many users were also forced to use VPNs to access the restricted content in Pakistan during the months-long internet disruption in 2024.

The government reportedly used the recently launched firewall test in Pakistan between 4 pm and 10 pm and impacted the netizens for six long hours.

Earlier, the PTA has called on businesses, such as IT firms, software companies, freelancers, and banks, to register their IPs to maintain VPN access, ensuring uninterrupted internet services for authorised users.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authorities reportedly began the proxy network registration process in 2010, and until now, approximately 20,500 VPNs have been successfully registered.

Pointing out the blockage of proxy networks and the frequent shutdown of the internet nationwide this year, Pakistani citizens expressed rage over the government and seemed concerned about the future of e-commerce in the country.

Pakistani social media activists and netizens sadly responded by saying that Pakistan has become the first country to introduce the concept of “internet load shedding in Pakistan.”

Farieha Aziz, a Digital rights advocate, stated, “It’s completely arbitrary, disrupting everyday life and work, and no one in the PTA and government has yet given a straight answer — other than partially on VPNs, which they have stated they are in the process of registering.”

The incumbent government, in the second quarter of the ongoing year, had reportedly introduced the firewall test in Pakistan, leading to the internet slowing to crawl.

When the government was criticised for slow internet, Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja accused the internet user of using the VPN, which, according to her, caused the internet to slow down.

It should be mentioned here that a firewall can track, block and significantly limit the visibility of content it deems is propaganda.

  • ‘Not sending pollution through missiles,’ says Indian climate expert

‘Not sending pollution through missiles,’ says Indian climate expert

Punjab’s Air Quality Index, on both sides of the border between India and Pakistan, has become one of the biggest causes of concern, not just in South Asia but globally as well.

A BBC Urdu report about the hazardous conditions of smog in Lahore and Delhi, with the former being particularly in a bad spot with AQI at 1000 plus points, Indian Punjabi correspondent Harmandeep Singh quoted Punjab Agricultural University’s Department of Climate Change and Punjab Pollution Control Authority’s study about the air pollution in the area.

“There is no scientific study that can prove that the fires in the villages of Indian Punjab after harvesting the crops cause air pollution in Lahore and Delhi,” says the university’s report.
Experts say that there are scientific arguments which prove that the air pollutants created by burning the residue of harvested crops are not reaching the borders of Lahore and Delhi.

However, on both sides of the border, stubble burning is considered to be the main cause of smog, whereas farmers claim that fire is set only to prepare the land for the next harvest.

Contrary to the claims of experts from Indian Punjab, experts from the country’s central educational institutions also blame the fires as the cause of Delhi’s pollution while maintaining that the contribution of this fire to pollution is very minor.

Notably, smoke from post-harvest fires in any state, including Punjab, contributed only 4.44 percent to Delhi’s pollution this year, as per Indian research institutes.

Satellite data of the US space agency NASA showed more fires seen on the Indian side than on the Pakistan side. Pakistani side concluded that because Lahore is close to the Indian border, so it can easily be affected by cross-border smog.

Additionally, the Pakistani Punjab’s Environment Department claimed the reason behind the hazardous conditions of smog in Lahore is because of the “Eastern Corridor of winds” while talking to The Current a week ago.

Meanwhile, talking to BBC Urdu, the Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology at Punjab Agricultural University, India, said that it is natural that light and moderate winds prevail in Punjab in October and November. “For the polluted particles to move from one place to another, the speed of the air must be more than six kilometres per hour,” the department said in their defence, implying the wind is not the reason for pollution in Delhi and Lahore.

Puneet Kaur Dhingra, Head of the Meteorological Department, says, “Wind speed should be more than six kilometres per hour for particulate matter and smoke to move in any direction. Since October, there is light wind in eastern Punjab. Only twice the wind speed was more than four kilometres per hour.”

Adding on, he said, “For the first time on October 5, the wind speed was recorded at 4.4 km per hour and for the second time on October 24, the wind speed was recorded at 4.1 km per hour. Therefore, the pollution created by the fires set after harvesting the crops in Punjab cannot travel in any direction.”

University’s Department of Climate Change further asserted that the concentration of pollution and smog in a particular place during the months of October and November is associated with a drop in temperature.

When the temperature gets warmer, the air expands and the pollutant particles disperses easily. Meanwhile, when the temperature drops like it is happening with the start if winters, the pollutant particles stay in one place and smog is created.

“Therefore, if there is smoke and pollution in Lahore and Delhi, there are self-generated reasons behind it.”

Adarsh Pal Vij, the chairman of the Pollution Control Board of Indian Punjab, emphasised that the PM 10 and PM 2.5 polluting particles released from the gases produced by the stubble fires in Punjab don’t have the potential to travel much. “There is no such research which proves that the pollution of Punjab plays a role in the pollution of Delhi and Lahore. PM 10 and PM 2.5 particles do not fly as far,” he said categorically.

Punjab Pollution Control Board’s Environmental Scientist Avatar Singh rationalizes his claim by saying, “After harvesting, the land is set on fire in Indian as well as Pakistani Punjab, so Lahore is itself responsible for the polluted air.”

“Even under these conditions, PM 10 particles can travel a maximum distance of 25 km, while PM 2.5 can travel a maximum distance of 50 km,” emphasised another expert as quoted by BBC Urdu.

Former Chairman of the Indian Punjab Pollution Control Board SS Marwaha strongly criticised the ongoing claims as he asserted, “Punjab can play an important role in the pollution of Lahore and Delhi if it sends its pollution towards these two cities through missiles.”

Notably, Professor Vinayak Sinha of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research admitted that the impact of Punjab’s pollution on Delhi’s pollution is negligible.

“The effect of pollution in Punjab is only in Punjab. Incidents of post-harvest fires in Uttar Pradesh or other neighboring states have a greater impact on pollution in Delhi than in Punjab,” he noted.
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research is a government research institute located in New Delhi and their finding say that pre-Diwali and winter analysis in Delhi found that the main cause of pollution is vehicle smoke rather than farm fires.

Talking to The Current, Environment Department’s Secretary Raja Jahangir also highlighted the other factors contributing to the pollution.  “Lahore is a city of 15 million, with 4.5 million bikes and 1.3 million cars on roads. There are 6,800 industrial units because it is the fastest growing city in the country and has the most construction sites, as well as more than 1,200 brick kilns,” Jahangir highlighted.

For a city spread over 1,757 square kilometres, the green cover is not enough.

“Ideally, it needs to be more than 30 per cent, but unfortunately, it is not more than four per cent,” he said, further that the smoke emitted from harvesting of 6.6 million of rice given a boost by air pressure is disturbing the air of Lahore while it doesn’t have enough to combat.

“Ideally, it needs to be more than 30 per cent, but unfortunately, it is not above four per cent,” he said, adding that the smoke emitted from the harvesting of 6.6 million tons of rice, combined with air pressure, is contributing to the air pollution in Lahore, which lacks sufficient resources to combat it.

  • ‘Hamari matt mari gaii thee’: Sher Afzal Marwat on PTI’s association with Faiz Hameed

‘Hamari matt mari gaii thee’: Sher Afzal Marwat on PTI’s association with Faiz Hameed

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat on Sunday regretted his party’s intense dependence on ex-spymaster General (retd) Faiz Hameed’s policy towards the relocation of Fitna al Khawarij ( Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan) within Pakistan.

“Hamari matt mari gai thi kay General Faiz Hammed hamara pasandida banda tha,” Sher Afzal Marwat regretfully said while talking to Samaa’s Absar Alam.

General Faiz Hameed and former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa were involved in the “TTP’s resettlement in Pakistan,” insisted Sher Afzal Marwat.

Days after the United States (US) forces withdrew from Afghanistan, the former Director General (DG) of Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), Gen Faiz Hameed, visited Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, on September 4, 2021.

Speaking to the News5 channel, Hameed smilingly said, “Don’t worry, everything will be okay.”

The terrorist group, during the PTI’s federal government, reportedly returned to the northern districts of Buner, Bajaur and Mohmand, and forced local businesses to pay protection money.

PTI allegedly helped the Fitna by relocating them to western Pakistan, and the ex-spymaster was the key player in that development.

On Feb 2, 2023, the founder of PTI, Imran Khan, in an address, defended the resettlement of the terrorists in Pakistan from Afghanistan, noting, “The PTI government had two options: either kill all of them or reach an agreement with them and allow them to settle in the province. These returning fighters had many issues that needed to be resolved for peace in the province.”

“When the Afghan war ended, some 30,000 to 40,000 Pakistani tribal fighters wanted to come back,” Khan said and clarified that all stakeholders were on board regarding the resettlement of terrorists in Pakistan.

When asked about PTI’s lack of effort in protesting against the deteriorated law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Sher Afzal Marwat claimed: “It is the duty of security institutions” to restore law and order rather than political parties.

Meanwhile, commenting on the ongoing teachers’ protest in the KP province, Marwat claimed that teachers can protest as long as they want, and it is their “right” to protest.

Teachers have been protesting at Jinnah Park Peshawar against the provincial government for more than five days for not upgrading their pay scale from BPS 12 to BPS 14.

Moreover, teachers are demanding permanent posts for those teachers who were hired in 2022 by the provincial government on a contract basis.

  • Did Trump just tweet in Imran Khan’s favour?

Did Trump just tweet in Imran Khan’s favour?

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) followers on social media have been engaging with a blue tick verified account seemingly run by United States (US) President-elect Donald J. Trump, resharing a video that was posted by the handle, featuring a short clip from an interview of former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan.

The post on X (formerly Twitter) has garnered more than 250,000 views with 13,000 likes and almost 5,000 re-tweets, while the screenshot of the post has also gone viral in multiple WhatsApp groups in Pakistan.

On November 10, the account posted a clip of Khan’s interview with Fox News from 2019, when he visited the US and met then-president Trump. In the interview, Khan appreciated Trump for being a “completely straightforward man and my whole delegation – we loved the meeting”.

Firstly, the verified account by the username ‘Donald J. Trump Potus Commentary’ itself states in its bio that it is “not affiliated with Trump.” Upon further research, the account has a history of posting in Urdu and commenting on local politics of Pakistan. One of the posts in Urdu on October 24 stated: “History has forgotten Justice Munir and Justice Qazi Faez Isa will be remembered for judicial regression.”

It may be noted that several past tweets have also been deleted by the user since after netizens found out about the account’s history.

However, PTI followers have been engaging with the post, with one user commenting: “It’s appalling that such a courageous and honest leader is languishing behind bars on false charges . Please help get Khan out .”

Another user pointed out that the account has nothing to do with Trump, writing, “Pakistanio [sic] is account ka Donald Trump say koi taluq nahi hai Only the ppl of Pakistan protesting in mass numbers can free IK. Focus on that. Rest is all noise.”

As the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, swept the polls in the US last week, congratulatory messages poured in from across the world. However, unbeknownst to the American public and the president-elect himself, PTI’s leadership and followers have pinned their hopes on the incoming US president to get justice for Imran Khan.

PTI blamed the US for conspiring against its government when Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence motion in 2022. Khan, in an infamous rally, had waved a page in front of a charged crowd, which was allegedly the cypher sent to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington.
However, later, Khan and his party changed their narrative as the American-Pakistani community continuously lobbied among US politicians to pressure the Pakistan government to release the incarcerated former prime minister.

  • KP govt suspends 800 protesting teachers

KP govt suspends 800 protesting teachers

With protests for increase in teachers’ salaries and other incentives continuing on the fifth day, the district education officer (DEO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak has suspended 800 primary school teachers.

Teachers have been protesting since Tuesday outside Peshawar’s Jinnah Park and have been firm in continuing their strikes until the fulfilment of their demands. They have also demanded that the government decides against privatisation of primary schools in the province.

“We don’t want to go on strike or protest, but we have no other options left,” All Teachers Association (ATA) Haripur President Akhtar Nawaz told media outlets on Friday.

“The demand for upgradation of teachers’ pay scale was accepted during the previous government led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf [PTI], but it has not been implemented yet,” Nawaz complained.

He said they were also demanding the provincial government awarded permanent status to teachers selected on the basis of a contract in 2022.

President of the All Primary Schools Teachers Association (APSTA) Azizullah Khan stated, “On the pretext of pension reforms, the provincial government has cut down several allowances from the pension, which we were previously entitled to.”

Earlier, KP Financial Advisor Muzammil Aslam had warned protesting teachers by saying that those involved in the protest would face pay cuts.

Responding to teachers’ demand for pay scale upgradation, he said that it was impossible to upgrade the status of 175,000 teachers at the same time.

  • Smog closes motorways, commercial activities

    Smog closes motorways, commercial activities

Thick clouds of smog are covering the plains of Punjab, including Lahore have severely restricted visibility affecting traffic flow, causing multiple motorway sections to close for all types of traffic, including M2 from Lahore to Kot Sarwar, Motorway M3 from Samundri to Darkhana, Motorway M4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakim, and Motorway M11 from Lahore to Sialkot.

The air quality index (AQI) reading in Multan crossed the 2,000 mark on Friday morning and is still ranging from 1000 to 1500, which has raised alarm bells across the province, prompting the administration to double the restrictions and control the air quality.

Additionally, the Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the commissioner of the Lahore division to ensure that all commercial activities are closed within the provincial capital and its peripheries at 8 pm for the next 15 days.

During a recent hearing on a plea filed against the Punjab government for not taking effective measures to combat smog, Justice Shahid Karim on Friday ordered all private offices to announce a work-from-home policy for two days and ordered markets to close at 8 pm.

However, the court also ordered the complete closure of markets on Sunday and directed officials to start a crackdown on smog-emitting vehicles.

LHC  directed traffic police to immediately stop smoke-emitting vehicles and remarked that the dolphin police should also take action along with the traffic police.

Justice Karim also observed that an out-of-the-box solution would also include limiting the marriage functions as well as limiting the number of persons attending these functions.

The judge sought a report on the matter of smog on Nov 11.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has issued a notification about the ban on public entry in public and amusement parks.

Green lockdown is already in place to bring down the pollution in smog hotspots in the province.
