Hasan Nawaz declared bankrupt after failing to clear tax liabilities in UK

Hassan Nawaz, son of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has been declared bankrupt by the High Court of Justice in London after he failed to clear his tax liabilities, Geo News correspondent Murtaza Ali Shah reported on November 17.

The UK Gazette, an official public record journal, published the details of Hasan’s bankruptcy.

The Gazette stated that Hasan Nawaz, who resides in Flat 17 Avenfield House, 118 Park Lane in London, while serving as a company director, has been declared bankrupt under case number 694 of 2023.

The petition was filed last year on August 25, 2023, and the bankruptcy order was issued on April 29, 2024, after a case brought forward by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The petition brought forward last year against Nawaz’s son in London claimed that he had unpaid debts and liabilities as the basis for the action.

Dawn reported that under UK law, a bankruptcy order restricts an individual from acting as a company director or managing businesses without court approval until the individual is discharged from bankruptcy. Hasan Nawaz, however, continues to act as a director of multiple companies in the UK.

Previously, in 2018, the two were declared proclaimed offenders after they failed to join the investigation in Avenfield Apartment, Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Both then left Pakistan after they were named in high-profile corruption cases the same year. They were declared proclaimed offenders for not joining the investigation and court proceedings, and subsequently, their arrest warrants were issued.

In April 2024, Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz were formally acquitted in three corruption cases related to the Panama Papers.

After an accountability court suspended their warrants this year, both returned to Pakistan quietly on March 12, ending their six-year-long self-imposed exile in London.

After their acquittal, the NAB prosecutors did not file appeals against the acquittal orders of Sharif’s son.

The NAB prosecutor informed the court that the cases did not fall under the amendments to the NAB laws, adding that Nawaz, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and her husband, Captain (retd) Safdar, had already been acquitted in the cases against them.

Noting that the accountability bureau had not filed an appeal against Maryam’s acquittal, the lawyer said it was based on the “same documents” on which her father was freed of the charges.

Army has ruled out possiblity of deal with Imran Khan: report

Amid claims of yet another major political development, this time in favour of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the military has dismissed the possibility of negotiating with incarcerated party founder Imran Khan, a foreign media outlet has claimed.

As per the details, London-based The Guardian has quoted senior military sources as ruling out the possibility of striking a deal or negotiating with Khan days after the former prime minister expressed willingness to engage in talks with the military leadership from his jail cell at Rawalpindi’s Adiala.

According to reports, the British newspaper had sent a questionnaire to Imran via his legal team, and in his responses, the incarcerated PTI founder confirmed that he had not had any direct interaction with the military since after he was arrested and locked up in August 2023.

Khan, however, said he would not rule out striking a deal with the establishment. It merits a mention here that the incarcerated former premier had earlier launched a tirade against the establishment, accusing the country’s military leadership of ousting his government.

The report quoted senior military leadership as saying that Khan, for the past few months, had been “applying pressure” for discussions with the military and had even offered to hold unconditional talks while seeking a deal for his release.

However, the military leadership is resolute in refusing to enter into any negotiations with him, the report said.

“Khan has to face the court cases against him, and can’t expect any deals from the military. Khan wants everyone to follow the rule of law, but he does not want this rule of law for himself,” it quoted military sources as saying.

“With regards to doing a deal with the military, any engagement would be based on principles and in the interest of the people, not personal gain or compromises that undermine Pakistan’s democratic values,” Khan reportedly told the publication.

While the PTI founder’s rhetoric towards the current military establishment has taken a more conciliatory tone in recent weeks, his jail time continues to drag on as he faces over a hundred cases that his legal team claims to be “baseless”.

Meanwhile, the government is yet to confirm if Khan could be facing a military trial for his alleged involvement in attacks on military instalments on May 9, 2023. The report quoted Khan as saying that a civilian could not be tried in a military court, let alone a former premier.

“It’s ludicrous. The only reason to try a civilian in military court is because no other court of justice would convict me. The very idea of it is alarming,” Khan reportedly told the publication.

  • State-run PTV uses VPN to post about ‘un-Islamic’ VPNs on X

State-run PTV uses VPN to post about ‘un-Islamic’ VPNs on X

With the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) terming the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) “un-Islamic”, state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) has reported all about it on X, formerly Twitter, which remains inaccessible in the country without VPN.

As per the details, the CII on Friday declared the use of VPNs as “un-Islamic”, emphasising the need to block access to immoral or blasphemous content on the internet.

CII Chairman Dr Raghib Hussain Naeemi, in a statement, said the federal government had the prerogative to curb evil and prevent access to it, declaring that adopting measures to prevent or restrict access to immoral and offensive content was in accordance with the Shariah.

The development came hours after the Ministry of Interior (MoI) penned a letter to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block illegal VPNs, highlighting increasing risks to national security and public morality.

Amid criticism against the ruling by netizens and religious scholars, including Maulana Tariq Jameel, state-run PTV also reported on the CII decision.

It went on to post about the development on X, the micro-blogging website that remains inaccessible to Pakistanis without a VPN since before the February 8 general elections due to compliance issues.

“[The] Council of Islamic Ideology has declared the use of VPN in violation of Shariah,” PTV said in a post that went viral soon after.

Earlier, CII chief Dr Naeemi had also said that VPNs, while technically a tool for security and privacy, were often misused to access forbidden content.

These included obscene websites, platforms spreading misinformation, or those fostering anarchy within society, he said, adding that VPNs were also used for online theft and fraud, making it difficult to trace cybercriminals.

The CII chief said that under Islamic principles, the permissibility of any act depended on its intent and method of use. He said using VPNs for unlawful purposes directly violated both Islamic and societal laws. Furthermore, he added, Muslims were obligated to respect state laws, provided they did not contradict Islamic principles.

He warned that bypassing restrictions on blocked websites not only violated national laws but also went against Islamic ethical principles.

Meanwhile, the MoI stated in its letter that VPNs were “increasingly being exploited by terrorists” to facilitate violent activities and financial transactions in Pakistan. “Off late, an alarming fact has been identified, wherein VPNs are used by terrorists to obscure and conceal their communications,” it said in a statement.

Additionally, the ministry added, unregulated VPNs were also being used for discreetly accessing pornographic and blasphemous content.

  • Bushra Bibi officially enters politics: reports

Bushra Bibi officially enters politics: reports

Bushra Bibi, wife of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, has made an official entry into politics by chairing the party leadership meeting on November 13 in Peshawar, PTI sources revealed to Geo News.

Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur is reportedly assisting the former first lady in political matters, noting that the message has been conveyed to “Punjab and KP leaderships to obey the direction of Bushra Bibi” regarding the November 24 protest.

Sources further claim that Bushra Bibi has been playing a crucial role in the political matters of the party since November 1, adding that she summoned the party parliament member to discuss the strategy for the November 24 protest in Islamabad.

However, Barrister Saif, KP’s Information and Broadcasting Minister, while appearing on Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath on Thursday, rejected that Bushra Bibi had chaired the party meeting in Peshawar.

He claimed that Bushra Bibi had indeed met with the party’s senior leadership, but “she had not participated in the party formal meeting.”

“Bushra Bibi does not hold any party position, so she cannot participate in the meetings,” the Minister added.

Barrister Saif also asserted that Bibi’s “input will be limited to prayers” with regard to her involvement in the party’s upcoming November 24 rally in Islamabad.

Barrister Saif, while responding to widespread claims that senior party leadership is showing reservation on the protest date, stated: “The party founder has given the final call for the November 24 protest.”

“If party leaders have reservations about the protest date, it would be their opinion, but the protest will happen on the same date that the party founder has given,” he clarified.

Imran Khan, founder of PTI, announced the “final call” for a protest in Islamabad on November 24, from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Wednesday.

  • PTI USA ‘apologises’ for prior anti-America remarks; leader rubbishes claim

PTI USA ‘apologises’ for prior anti-America remarks; leader rubbishes claim

Journalist Murtaza Solangi has shared an alleged agreement that showed that the USA chapter of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has hired US lobbying firm Fenton/Arlock LLC to “create a favorable and sympathetic understanding of Imran Khan and PTI in the United States.”

However, PTI’s leader Azhar Mashwani has refuted the claims and the November 14 tweet in which Solangi posted the agreement, calling the alleged document “fake.” Users pointed out that the lobbying firm’s name is misspelled “Arlock instead of Arlook.”

It should be noted that in 2022, PTI USA chapter hired Fenton/Arlook to improve the party’s image in the United States.

Interestingly, in the agreement dated November 7, PTI USA has said it “acknowledges and apologizes for any prior anti-U.S. remarks made by party leaders that may have been misinterpreted or caused any strain in the bilateral relationship.”

Furthermore, the agreement also alleged that PTI USA, which is representing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf “is committed to prioritising US interests within the framework of Pakistan’s sovereignty including supporting US objectives in Pakistan and countering the growing influence of neighbouring country in areas that may conflict with US geopolitical and economic interests.”

It should be noted that PTI blamed the US for conspiring against its government when Imran Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence motion in 2022. Founder PTI Imran Khan, in an infamous rally, waved a page in front of a charged crowd, which was allegedly the cypher sent to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington.

The Intercept, a US-based news website, in August 2023 published what it claimed to be the “cypher” that hinted the US administration wanted to remove Khan from power.

However, later, Khan and his party changed their narratives multiple times while the American-Pakistani community continuously lobbied among US politicians for the release of Khan from prison.

The agreement, since viral on social media, also stipulated the scope of services which the lobbying firm would provide on behalf of PTI USA for a retainer fee of $40,000 per month.

“Utilizing Fenton/Arlock LLC’s influence, contacts, and resources to help reshape PTI’s image within US political circles, with the goal of fostering a positive narrative and securing political goodwill towards PTI’s platform and leadership,” read the agreement.

As Donald Trump swept the US presidential elections earlier this month, his victory created a moment of happiness within PTI leadership and supporters because they’ve pinned their hopes on Trump’s intervention to get Imran Khan released from jail.

Former deputy speaker and prominent PTI leader, Qasim Khan Suri, took to X last month to blame the Democratic Party for Khan’s fall from power instead of blaming the United States.

Suri posted his speech from 2022, when he was the deputy assembly speaker, in which he blamed the United States for conspiring against Khan due to his alleged “independent foreign policy, economy and the sanctity of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).” Yet, the caption Suri wrote was in clear contrast with the contents of the video, writing, “The crushing defeat of the US Democratic Party, which played an important role in bringing down the government of Imran Khan, in the US presidential election made local facilitators sleepless, many of them immediately issued statements to change their father.”

  • ‘Death sentence on the cards for Gen (r) Faiz Hameed,’ claims journalist

‘Death sentence on the cards for Gen (r) Faiz Hameed,’ claims journalist

Journalist Syed Imran Shafqat on Thursday claimed that ex-spymaster General (retd) Faiz Hameed can face the maximum punishment, which, according to Shafqat, is the “death penalty” for his alleged role as the “mastermind” behind the May 9 riots.

Appearing on the Hum News programme FAISLA AAP KA, Imran Shafqat predicted that former Chief Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) General (retd) Faiz Hameed’s trial will conclude in November or December.

Previously, senior journalist Nusrat Javed said on ARY News on November 13, “I fear that General Faiz Hameed might be sentenced before November 24.”

It should be noted here that Imran Khan announced the “final call” for protests on November 24 for a protest in Islamabad.

“This is the moment when you will have to decide whether you want to live under martial law or live with freedom,” Aleema Khan narrates hee brother’s message while speaking to journalists at Adiala Jail Rawalpindi on Wednesday.

Shafqat, ruling out a possible military trial of Imran Khan, stated: “No one intends to conduct a military trial of Imran Khan.”

Imran was taken into custody by paramilitary Rangers at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on May 9 in connection with the Al Qadir Trust case.

Protests erupted in major cities, including Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, and Quetta, with protestors harming army installations.

Rioters stormed the residence of the Corps Commander in Lahore and laid siege to a gate of the army’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

The military’s spokesperson, in a press conference in May 2024, made it clear there would be no moving forward without a sincere apology from the PTI and a public repudiation of “the politics of anarchy and hate”.

However, the incarcerated party founder was released on May 12 when the IHC restricted authorities from arresting him in any legal matter.

Afterwards, Khan was arrested from his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore, shortly after his conviction in the Toshakhana case on August 5 last year, where he was sentenced to three years for illegally selling state gifts and has been detained since then on multiple charges, including the £190 million reference and a new Toshakhana case.

Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, was released on bail in the ToshaKhana case after being incarcerated for nine months in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi.

  • Super tax enforced on Punjab farmers with high income amid PPP opposition

Super tax enforced on Punjab farmers with high income amid PPP opposition

The Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed the Agricultural Income Tax Punjab Bill 2024 by a majority vote, irking the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmakers.

The new tax will also be imposed on livestock, while a super tax will be imposed on high-income farmers in 2025.

The Punjab Assembly, which met under the chair of Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan, passed the bill. All the amendments presented by the opposition in this regard were rejected, while the ruling coalition party, the PPP, strongly opposed the Agricultural Income Tax Act 2024 Bill.

As the PPP legislators walked out of the house while objecting to the Agricultural Income Tax Bill, the PML-N benches wasted no time to approve it.

PPP’s Ali Haider Gilani said that the Punjab government didn’t take the bill into confidence and was walking out of the house while rejecting all the amendments of the opposition.

According to the bill, income tax exemption on agricultural land will be abolished, while tax on livestock will also be considered an agricultural tax.

According to the text of the bill, a fine of one per cent of the tax amount will be imposed on the agricultural income tax defaulter for each additional day. A fine of 10,000 may also be imposed on an agricultural tax defaulter with an agricultural income of less than Rs1.2 million.

Similarly, a fine of Rs25,000 will be imposed on an agricultural tax defaulter with an agricultural income of less than Rs40m and a fine of Rs50,000 will be imposed on an agricultural tax defaulter with an agricultural income of more than Rs40m.

The text of the bill further states that a fine of Rs20,000 will be imposed on a farmer with an income of Rs1.2m to Rs40m for not paying tax. The Agricultural Income Tax Act 2024 has also abolished the tax schedule listed in the Agricultural Income Tax Act of 1997.

After the approval of the Agricultural Income Tax Bill, it will be implemented in 2025.

Furthermore, the Punjab Assembly approved the Registration Amendment Bill 2024 and the rules on the authority of the Chief Minister’s Advisor to speak in the House by a majority vote.

Upon completion of the agenda, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan prorogued the session indefinitely.

  • Defence Minister files complaint with London police after heckling, knife attack threat

Defence Minister files complaint with London police after heckling, knife attack threat

Defence Minister and PML-N leader Khawaja Asif on Thursday lodged a formal complaint with London police following the incident of heckling and threatening with a knife attack a couple of days ago.

The minister lodged his complaint during his visit to the Pakistan High Commission in London where a London police team was also present.

He informed the police about the knife attack threat and the harassment he faced while travelling on a train in the British capital.

According to state-run APP, the London Transport Police are investigating the matter.

Khawaja Asif told the police that the unfortunate incident took place around 3:30pm on the Elizabeth Line on November 11. “I am in London on a private visit with a relative, and I was travelling to Reading via the Elizabeth Line when a group of three to four individuals harassed him on the train, filmed him without permission, used abusive language, and threatened him with a knife.”

The minister said he didn’t recognise any of the individuals involved in the incident, asking the London Transport Police to use the CCTV footage to track down the individuals involved.

A day earlier, Geo News reported that the defence minister was heckled and threatened with a knife attack by an unknown man while he was travelling with a friend on the London Underground’s Elizabeth Line on Monday afternoon.

This is not the first time that Pakistani officials or political leaders have been harassed and heckled in the British capital.

A couple of weeks ago, a chasing and heckling incident took place with former chief justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa whose vehicle was attacked by the supporters of a political party at London’s Middle Temple.

PML-N leaders Marriyum Aurangzeb and Hina Pervaiz Butt were also harassed and heckled by people in London in the past.

  • Maryam Nawaz responds to criticism over overseas surgery

Maryam Nawaz responds to criticism over overseas surgery

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz responded to widespread criticism on Wednesday about why she went abroad for her surgery instead of having it done in Pakistan.

Nawaz, speaking to party workers in London, clarified that she had to undergo parathyroid surgery, which cannot be done in Pakistan, noting that “only Switzerland and America have the technology for this particular surgery.”

Responding to rumours about her health, she denied having throat “cancer”.

She stated, while addressing Punjab’s smog crisis, that the smog had developed over the past seven to eight years, and its effects can not be mitigated overnight, noting, “The Punjab government is using AI technology to trace smoke-emitting vehicles.”

Maryam Nawaz’s remarks came after she was strongly criticised by politicians and activists, who pointed out that her province was grappling with a severe smog crisis while she was enjoying fresh air in Switzerland.

Lahore is consistently ranked as the worst city in the world in terms of air quality index, according to the Swiss air quality monitor IQAir.

The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Air Quality Index (AQI) revealed that a value of 50 or below indicates good air quality, while a value above 300 signals hazardous air quality.

The air quality index in Punjab’s capital has exceeded 1000 a number of times this year alone.
