    Chief Justice asks govt and PTI to sit together again on elections matter

    While hearing the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) plea to revisit its April 4 order on Punjab polls, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Umar Ata Bandial, said on Monday that both government and Pakistan Tehreeke-e-Insaf (PTI) should resume talks.

    Justice Bandial said that the constitution guaranteed political rights. “We don’t want to get into political matters and we don’t want to hear anything. We hope that negotiations will start anew and a solution will be reached.”

    The hearing is now adjourned till next Tuesday.

    On April 4, the SC said that Punjab polls will be held on May 14, however, the date has passed without elections taking place.

    It is pertinent to mention that prior to this govt and PTI tried to talk this matter out but no consensus took place.

    United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has telephoned Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir.

    According to media reports, bilateral defense and military relations were discussed, with both emphasising the need to further promote mutual defense and military cooperation.

    The conversation has taken place while the country is gripped in political chaos. Recently, after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest, his supporters attacked military installations.

    Khan has also openly named COAS Munir for his arrest and accused him of spreading anarchy just to save his seat.

    Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif will visit Lahore today to examine the aftermath of the protests Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held in the Cantt area.

    Along with Interim Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Mohsin Naqvi, he will visit the Corps Commander’s House in Lahore, with the PM scheduled to go to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) to meet injured officials in order to show his support to the army.

    It is pertinent to mention that after PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9, many of his supporters barged into the Corps Commander’s House and damaged the property, burning the building and looting personal possessions.

    The Corps Commander House is Jinnah House, a property owned by the founder of the country which he willed to the state.

    In an unusually harsh-worded statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that May 9 would go down in history as a “dark chapter”.

    Amid the violent protests and political chaos, many political commentators feared that either the army will take over or an emergency would be imposed by the government.

    However, federal ministers and Director-General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry laid the rumors to rest on Friday evening.

    Talking on Geo News’ programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’, the DG ISPR said that the imposition of martial law is out of the question as the whole army wholeheartedly supports democracy and will continue to do so.

    In response to unverified reports that army officers have resigned due to the ongoing chaos, the spokesperson snubbed the speculations, categorically stating that not one person had resigned.

    After Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters attacked army installations, the ISPR said that May 9, 2023, would go down in history as a “dark chapter”.

    Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb also rebutted news regarding the “imposition of emergency” in the country.

    “The reports circulating in the media regarding the imposition of emergency in the country are baseless,” she said, adding that no such decision was taken in the meeting of the Federal Cabinet, the minister said in news statement.

    The information minister urged the media to verify facts before airing or publishing any news.

    A day earlier, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that an emergency is a constitutional option but there is no chance of imposing martial law.

    According to media reports, the cabinet proposed an emergency to Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif but no final decision took place.

    No one can arrest Imran till Monday, says Islamabad High Court

    Islamabad High Court (IHC) has said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan can’t be arrested till Monday morning.

    Reportedly, Khan has been granted bail in all cases which were under the high court.

    As there is a possibility that Khan can be arrested again, he has decided not to step out of court without a written order.

    SC releases Imran but to be produced before Islamabad High Court tomorrow

    On Thursday, the top court declared Khan’s arrest “illegal” and ask for his immediate release from National Accountability Bureau (NAB) custody.

    The court also demanded that Khan should be produced before the court, then gave their verdict. The top court bench also directed Khan to present himself before IHC on Friday till then he can stay in Police Lines Guesthouse.

    Khan also made some statements, he alleged that he was hit with sticks and was abducted like a terrorist.

    He also said that he was under arrest and does not want unrest in the country. According to him, he was also unaware of the violent protests that were going on in support of him.

    After the SC verdict in Khan’s favour, PTI called off protests in various cities.

    Following are the remarks made by SC judges when they heard Khan’s plea against his arrest:

    “The NAB authorities and the ICT Police shall ensure foolproof security to the petitioner [Imran} until his production in the Islamabad High Court in this regard,” the court order stated.

    “Whilst the petitioner is in the Police Guest House, he shall be entitled to meet up to 10 guests. These persons shall be allowed to stay with the petitioner as long as desired by him”, court said.

    Before Khan’s appearance before the top court, Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that NAB had committed “contempt of court”. “They should have taken permission from the court’s registrar before the arrest. Court staffers were also subjected to abuse,” he added.

    He emphasised that courts should be accessible to everyone for relief and that individuals should feel safe to approach the courts.

    “No one can be arrested from the Supreme Court, a high court or an accountability court,” the CJP noted

    Marriyum Aurangzeb says Supreme Court for providing ‘relief’ to Imran

    Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb censured the Supreme Court for providing “relief” to Imran.

    “The SC is giving relief to a criminal, a terrorist, a gangster who leads armed groups,” said Aurangzeb.

    “If courts support armed groups, encourage them, then similar relief should be given to all people,” said Marriyum.

    “Real contempt of court happens when the country’s courts become shelters for armed groups and terrorists,” she added.

    After Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s arrest from Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday, authorities have not spared his party members either.

    Following is the list of all leaders of the former ruling party who have been arrested so far:

    1- Asad Umar

    On Wednesday, PTI Secretary General Asad Umar was arrested from the premises of the IHC — the same court from where his chief was taken into custody.

    According to eyewitnesses, PTI lawyers fought with the police to prevent Umar’s arrest, but the law enforcers overpowered them and took the PTI leader away. He was booked in two cases registered against him and other PTI leaders following the protests that ensued after Khan’s arrest.

    2- Shah Mahmood Qureshi

    On Thursday morning, PTI senior Vice President Shah Mahmood Qureshi was arrested for “inciting violent protests” after Khan’s arrest.

    PTI also shared a video of Qureshi’s arrest. The party claimed that the ex-foreign minister had been taken to an undisclosed location.

    3- Fawad Chaudhry

    Chaudhry was finally apprehended by the police as he emerged from the Supreme Court building late on Wednesday night, where he had sought refuge for over 12 hours in an attempt to evade his impending arrest.

    4- Omar Cheema

    Former Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema was arrested on Wednesday during a raid at his house by the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Punjab.

    5- Aliya Hamza

    According to ARY News, former Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Aliya Hamza Malik was arrested in Islamabad from her residence on Wednesday.

    6- Maleeka Bokhari

    According to reports, authorities have picked up former MNA Maleeka from Islamabad

    Other than this, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, Falaknaz Chitrali and Musarrat Jamshed Cheema have been arrested so far.

    7- Ejaz Chaudhry

    Senator got arrested on Thursday after Khan’s arrest.

    8- Ali Muhammad Khan

    On Thursday, Ali Muhummad Khan got arrested.

    9- Shireen Mazari

    In the early hours of Friday, the former human rights minister was arrested from her home in Islamabad. According to reports, she has been taken to Adiala Jail.

    10- Dr Yasmin Rashid

    Similarly, around the same time, the former provincial minister was arrested from Lahore. Her whereabouts are unknown.

    This is a developing story as it is feared that more leaders may get arrested soon.

    Considering the current rioting on the streets, the Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen yesterday (Wednesday) decided to “postpone” board exams of class 9, scheduled to be held on May 11 and 12 till further notice.

    The British Council has also cancelled Cambridge exams scheduled for today (Thursday).

    Students and their parents are disappointed at the cancellation of the exams.

    “Our grades will be affected badly,” said one student while talking to Dawn.

    Another disappointed student said that she did not celebrate Eid because she was preparing for the exams.

    “We are working here day and night for a bright future and here we were just engulfed by darkness because of the ‘situation’ in our country,” said another student.

    One of the O level students suggested to his friend on social media that they should go to the British Council and solve the paper forcefully.

    Reaction of Parents:

    One parent said that her daughter had worked very hard the entire year but both her major science subjects’ papers got cancelled. Another parent said that it would affect a student’s future, especially if science or medicine were her major career goals.

    Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said on Thursday that one attack on General Headquarters of the Army (GHQ) was carried out by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and now another one has been carried out by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

    Addressing a press conference, the Foreign Minister referred to violent acts of PTI workers, pointing out that this is not the first time that they have violated the law. “I had warned earlier that you people are creating Altaf Hussain in Punjab,” said Bilawal.

    He continued by adding that Imran Khan believes that he can cross every red line and the law is only applicable on others.

    The PPP head advised PTI to not make “matters worse [and] call for an end to violent protests and declare that you will abide by the rule of law and Constitution.”

    Bilawal said that he is principally against banning any political party but said that “such decisions are made in view of the circumstances”.
    If such a decision is taken, he continued, “it would be taken because there would be no other choice left.”

    PM’s address to the nation:

    Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif in an address to the nation on Thursday termed damaging public property an “act of terrorism” and “enmity” towards the country.

    In a short address, the premier said that he would like to warn “terrorists” who are harming the country to stop, otherwise strict actions will be taken against them.

    Sharif was referring to PTI supporters who are protesting against the arrest of party head Imran Khan.

    PM also recalled his party members’ arrests, adding that “revengeful acts in politics never renders good results”.

    Former US President Donald Trump has been found guilty of sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll by a federal Manhattan jury.
    

    The jury has awarded Carroll $5 million in damages.
    

    Carroll had alleged that Trump had raped her in the dressing room of a luxury department store in the spring of 1996. She had also claimed defamation after Trump publicly denied assaulting her, called her “not his type” and accused her of fabricating the story to push sales of her book.
    

    The former President has denied all wrongdoing. He will not face jail time as a result of the civil suite.
    

    The jury found that Trump had sexually abused her, however, Carroll could not convince the jury that she had been raped.
    

    Trump did not attend court proceedings as defendants are allowed to skip hearings if the case is a civil suit.
    

    Immediately after the verdict, Carroll called the verdict a victory for her and for other victims of sexual abuse.

    In an unexpected development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has been arrested from inside Islamabad High Court (IHC) by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) today (Tuesday).
    

    NAB bought arrest warrants with them, which were issued by the accountability watchdog’s Chairman Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmad Butt on May 1. As per details, Khan was taken into custody under Section 9A of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999. 
    

    According to Islamabad police, Imran has been arrested in a case in which Bahria Town allegedly gave land worth Rs530 million to Khan and Bushra Bibi’s Al-Qadir Trust in return for a settlement.
    

    

    


    

    

    

    What is the Al-Qadir Trust case?
    

    In 2019, more than £190m of assets were seized from Malik Riaz by National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK.
    

    Later, NCA returned this amount to Pakistan’s national treasury, however, the Khan-led cabinet of the time decided to submit millions of pounds to Supreme Court on behalf of Malik Riaz.
    

    A few weeks later, the Al-Qadir Trust was founded by Khan, Bushra Bibi, Zulfi Bukhari, and Babar Awan. Malik allotted 458 kanals to them to establish a university that apparently has only 35 students.
    

    However, according to senior journalist Kamran Khan, the former Prime Minister (PM) was arrested for making accusations against the top brass in the army including Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir.
    

    

    


    

    

    

    Earlier, Khan made serious allegations that General Faisal Naseer plotted his assassination. Later, when Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) condemned his words, he said that he can prove that ISI took over the judicial complex in Islamabad to murder him.
