Army has sought 3,400 kanals near Islamabad for defence purposes

The Pakistan Army has written a letter to Deputy Commissioner (DC) Haripur to hand over more than thirty-four hundred kanals of land for defence purposes.

The letter revealed that the Pakistani army authorities are seeking 3,181 land kanals and 17 marlas from Haripur tehsil, Khanpur, for “defence purposes.” However, the defence purpose has not been defined, BBC Urdu reported.

Lately, the opposition leader of the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, raised concerns about the Army’s intentions to acquire two villages’ land adjacent to the ShahAllah Ditta area near Islamabad.

“The Army will buy their land at a lower price. Where will the villagers migrate,” he questioned

He added, “Army should build Defence installation on Navy golf course and Airforce land.”

He suggested sending this matter to the Defence Committee to prevent the army from seizing the land.

However, DC Haripur, Shozab Abbasi, stated that all procedures must be carried out in compliance with the land acquisition law.

  • ‘IMF wanted Pakistan to default last year,’ claims Ishaq Dar

‘IMF wanted Pakistan to default last year,’ claims Ishaq Dar

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has claimed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) wanted Pakistan to default during the tenure of last year’s sixteen-month government led by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

In a Defence Day ceremony, Dar said, “The IMF was not reviewing Pakistan’s loan request, despite fulfilling the technical review demands.”

He mentioned that the IMF had delayed the loan for eight months when Pakistan was in economic turmoil despite having three billion commitments from friendly countries.

“Pakistan could lead the fifty-seven Islamic countries by achieving economic power, and whenever the country was quite close to achieving that goal, the government’s legs were pulled from underneath it,” Dar claims.

He urged politicians to be rational about Pakistan’s economic potential, pointing out the country’s nuclear power status.

The Deputy Prime Minister stood by his unusual statement at Geo News last year, asserting, “Pakistan can avoid default without the IMF.”

COAS Gen Asim Munir calls for unity, declares bond between army and people vital

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir has said that political differences should not cause hatred among people and termed relations between the army and the people the foundation for defeating any enemy.

Speaking on a Defence Day ceremony at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Gen Munir said, “For national unity, it is essential that political differences do not turn into hatred.”

The Army Chief highlighted the protection of minority rights to achieve national unity as per the constitution of Pakistan.

Commenting on Operation “Azm-e-Istehkam” (Resolve of Stability), he said, “Operation Azm-e-Istahkam is part of the National Action Plan. In this long war, not only the Pakistan Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies but also a large number of civilians, especially from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, have made great sacrifices.”

He added, “The malicious goals aimed at weakening national unity will not succeed.”

  • Did CJP Isa really seek an extension? X exchange settles the debate

Did CJP Isa really seek an extension? X exchange settles the debate

An interesting exchange occurred between The News’ journalist Fakhar Durrani and lawyer Abdul Moiz Jaferii on X, formerly Twitter, regarding the alleged “judicial package” or extension in the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa.

The exchange between the two started when Abdul Moiz took to X to condemn Senator Irfan Siddiqui’s recent op-ed in Jang magazine commending Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, who is the next in line to become the CJP.

Moiz wrote, “This soft signalling by the PMLN through irfan sb of their acceptance of SMASH as CJP is frankly too little and too late. Not that it would have made a difference to begin with.”

Fakhar Durrani disagreed with Moiz saying, “Jaferii bhai my humble suggestion, if someone’s propaganda is exposed they should accept their mistake gracefully instead of blaming others that they have failed.”

He further said that Express Tribune’s court reporter Hasnat Malik was the first to report in a May 16 article that CJP Isa did not want an extension.

Jafrii took Fakhar’s bait, asking him why Hasnat has consistently reported about the alleged judicial package.

Fakhar Durrani replied, “Have you relied on the sourced material which he published on Express Tribune? Is there any report published in Express Tribune which resulted in shaping your opinion that QFE is adamant to get extension? Or you are solely relying on his YouTube reports?”

He stated that journalists must follow a code of conduct and editorial policies when publishing on a credible platform. In contrast, YouTube is an “unchecked platform where there’s no editorial check and balance.”

Jafrii sarcastically replied that one cannot deem a source credible and non-credible simultaneously, referring to Hasnat Malik’s stories.

Fakhar then replied in detail, saying, “As a lawyer, whatever you say in the street/outside courtroom, can you repeat the same before the court? Every profession has some set of principles, ethics and code of conduct.”

Durrani further stated, “The same applies to journalism. When you report for your official media organisation, you have to follow certain principles and answer your editors’ questions. Most of the time, you have to prove your story with evidence before the editors, and then it gets published.”

Abdul Moiz did not back down and replied, “It is because of the YouTube journalism of @HasnaatMalik @Matiullahjan919 @AsadAToor @saqibbashir156 @AhmedASarfraz @SohailRashid8 and co that qazi sb became chief. Their journalism today has allowed the legal fraternity and the judiciary to galvanise together and see the forest for the trees.”

Fakhar Durrani then replied in detail to YouTuber Matiaullah Jan’s dialogue with reporters Hasnaat Malik and Saqib Bashir and the image of a letter by CJP Isa dated August 28 in which he explicitly stated that he wanted the meeting regarding High Court Justices on May 3, but due to majority opinion, it was deferred.

He asked, “Do you think these journalists can’t read the minutes of the meeting or a letter. They do. But even then they are trolling and propagating that QFE deferred the meeting because he wants to get extension. Lastly. I never get excited. One can argue when you come up with logic. If a learned lawyer like you start labeling any dissenting voice as if they are in sync with establishment, there will be no debate.”

  • Appearing on Gharidah’s show insult to this movement, Shahbaz Gill tells Fawad Chaudhary

Appearing on Gharidah’s show insult to this movement, Shahbaz Gill tells Fawad Chaudhary

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Shahbaz Gill and former PTI minister Fawad Chaudhary had a rare public disagreement on X (formerly Twitter) after the latter appeared on Gharidah Farooqi’s show.

After Fawad shared a clip from the GTV show on X, Gill termed her a “journalist-like tout” and said that appearing on her show was an “insult to this entire movement.”

Fawad replied by writing that journalists and politicians are a permanent reality. “Space should be given to those who oppose your point of view,” he stated.

Gill, however, remained adamant. Naming Zahid Hussain, Muhammad Malik, Benazir Shah, Arifa Noor, Hamid Mir and Muhammad Hanif as people who “criticise us vehemently and we respect them”, he again targeted Gharidah.

“This woman is not a journalist. She did not carry out journalism. She carried out filth.”

He then went on to say that some hands are stained by “the blood of our people”.

“They will be held accountable,” he concluded.

Gharidah Farooqi has repeatedly alleged that she has been targeted on social media by PTI-affiliated accounts, both during the party’s ruling period and afterwards.

‘Gen Faiz Hameed may face trial under official Secrets Act,’ claims Absar Alam

Former Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Absar Alam has revealed details about the possibility of an official Secrets Act trial of former spymaster General (retd) Faiz Hameed.

Absar claimed on a Samaa podcast that data containing information about journalists, politicians, bureaucrats, judges, army generals, and intelligence agencies’ sensitive information had been recovered by the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) during a raid from General (retd) Faiz Hameed’s house.

Alam revealed that Gen Faiz was in constant contact with the Chief Minister (CM) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Ali Amin Gandapur, and Faiz controlled the KP province before May 9.

He added, “On May 9, allegedly, a decision was made by the Faiz network with trained attackers to assault a sensitive building full of sophisticated weapons, which ultimately failed.”

“Which serving employees constantly leaked information about the Corp Commander meeting?” Absar questioned.

“Faiz did mutiny for personal gain on May 9,” he concluded.

  • ‘New Tosha Khana case over after SC restores NAB amendments,’ says Imran Khan

‘New Tosha Khana case over after SC restores NAB amendments,’ says Imran Khan

Founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has said that the new Tosha Khana case is over now, after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendments was released.

Speaking to journalists at Adiala jail, the former Prime Minister said that he should be joyful, hinting at the closure of the Al Qadir trust case, too.

“Public representatives did corruption, then passed laws to finish their cases,” he remarked.

He said that some people are plotting against incumbent Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur, and Khan advised his party not to undermine Gandapur: “Those who are plotting against CM KP shouldn’t complain if they don’t get a party ticket later,” Khan said.

Commenting on the August 5 Director General (DG) Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) press conference, Khan said that if the army announces its apolitical stance, it is good for the country.

He further stated that former Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa should also be sue along with former spymaster General Faiz Hameed in military court.

  • Mohsin Naqvi faces criticism after Pakistan’s defeat by Bangladesh

Mohsin Naqvi faces criticism after Pakistan’s defeat by Bangladesh

The Federal Interior Minister and Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi came under fire in both houses of parliament after the country lost badly to Bangladesh in a two-match Test series in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Barrister Syed Ali Zafar stated, “There is only one reason for the disaster, and that is when you appoint an incompetent head of an institution. Not only the institution is destroyed, but all the work done by the institution is spoiled.”

Meanwhile, Senator Saifullah Abro lashed out at Naqvi over his earlier statement about Balochistan in which he said that a single SHO could deal with terrorism in the province.

“If it is so, then we may acquire services of 40 SHOs to handle four provinces, AJK, GB, and 36 ministries.”

The Senator also wondered why the federal capital was shut down if the Pakistani team performed like it did.

Senator Manzoor Ahmad reminded the House that the nation expects much more from players who are paid Rs4 to 6 million in monthly salaries besides other incentives, and called for Naqvi’s resignation.

“The issue raised is of the entire nation. The talk here has been about his role as an administrator and a professional but not as a senator. It is a matter of the nation’s prestige. Unfortunately, youngsters have stopped watching cricket as they are so disappointed with the team’s performance,” remarked Senator Irfan Siddiqui.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s X account chided Naqvi in a long post, saying, “He [Mohsin Naqvi] was given this position by none other than the “Big Boss” himself, and now he has annihilated cricket. The Pakistan Cricket Team suffered a whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh. What can be a worse defeat than that?”

  • Sindh govt defends its decision to buy vehicles worth billions

Sindh govt defends its decision to buy vehicles worth billions

The Sindh government has defended its decision to buy 138 double-cabin vehicles worth two billion rupees for Assistant Commissioners (ACs) in the province.

“The Sindh government’s decision to allocate funds for new vehicles is a practical measure to ensure that field officers can perform their duties efficiently and effectively,” said a statement released by the provincial government.

It further reads, “It is essential to provide these officers with reliable transportation to reach far-flung areas and respond promptly to emergencies and administrative responsibilities.”

Stressing the need for new vehicles, the provincial government claimed, “Currently, most Suzuki Cultus vehicles under ACs have far exceeded their useful life, with many having run nearly 0.8 million kilometres.”

“Ensuring that field officers are equipped with functional and reliable vehicles is not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the provincial administration,” the statement concluded.

  • Supreme Court upholds NAB amendments, rejects Imran Khan’s appeal

Supreme Court upholds NAB amendments, rejects Imran Khan’s appeal

The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday approved the intra-court appeal, upholding amendments in the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO).

A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa announced the 5-0 majority verdict and remarked that respondent former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and other parties failed to prove NAO amendments unconstitutional.

The apex court noted that the CJP and other judges “cannot be the gatekeepers of the parliament.”

A larger apex court bench stressed, “whenever possible, the Supreme Court should strive to maintain legislation” enacted by the parliament.

In 2022, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) led government made several amendments to NAO’s laws, including limiting the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) jurisdiction to investigate over Rs 500 million cases and restricting the tenure of the NAB chairman to three years.

Imran Khan then moved the apex court, calling the amendments “legitimise corruption.”

In September 2023, a Supreme Court bench led by the then CJP Umar Ata Bandial, ruled 2-1 to restore corruption cases, declaring Khan’s plea legitimate, which the provincials and federal government challenged.
