‘Remorse and embarrassment’: Ahsan Iqbal says family who harassed him apologised

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal said on Sunday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters, who harassed and chanted slogans at him at a restaurant earlier this week, had come to meet him and apologised for their actions.

Taking to Twitter, Iqbal said, “The family involved in the incident came to Narowal and apologised for their actions in the meeting, expressed remorse and embarrassment.”

“We are all Pakistanis and have a right to disagree with each other but that should not turn into hatred and one must maintain mutual respect,” said Iqbal.

A day earlier, Iqbal said that the incident highlighted the culture PTI Chairman Imran Khan was teaching his followers.

The planning minister said the “disease of extremism and hatred” in society was affecting Pakistan like “cancer”.

Addressing PTI supporters, he urged them to carefully consider if their leader was as sincere to them as they were to him. “Imran has a track record of using people and throwing them away like tissue paper,” he claimed.

“Since over a decade, Khan has been running his ‘chor’ campaign, however, he could not even prove a single allegation during the four years he was in power,” he said, adding that it is the responsibility of a politician to train their workers; however, Khan has failed to do so.

“I think Khan needs a psychologist,” he asserted.

  • Eid looks inspired by Pakistan’s PML-N, PTI and PPP politicians

Eid looks inspired by Pakistan’s PML-N, PTI and PPP politicians

Eid is just around the corner and if you have not decided what to wear this Eid, you can take some inspiration from our politicians. While politicians are often busy with different things, some of them take their style very seriously and make sure to level up their dressing game before stepping out in public.

The Current has compiled a list of politicians who we think are great inspirations for your Eid look.

    Maryam Nawaz

Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s looks at her son Junaid Safdar’s wedding were the talk of the town for an entire week. This one specific look of Maryam from 2020, when she met Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at the All Parties Conference (APC), can be a perfect summer eid look. The shoes she is wearing are complimenting the solid green dress and will be heavy on our pockets, but similar copies of them are easily available in local markets.

    Muhammad Jibran Nasir

You must be wondering why Jibran made our list of politicians? Well, Jibran is a politician and he contested the 2018 general elections from Karachi as an independent candidate. Jibran is usually seen wearing a simple Shalwar Kurta. However, his eid look from last year is a total inspiration. A black waistcoat paired with a white shalwar kameez, is the safest choice.

    Sharmila Saheba Faruqui

PPP’s Sharmila Faruqi always makes sure to put effort into the way she looks and because of her unique sense of style.

She recently posted a photo of herself from a Ramzan transmission, and her black embroidered dress is giving us all Eid vibes, and it can be a perfect option for your Eid.

    Usman Buzdar

Our favourite Usman Buzdar, former Chief Minister of Punjab’s look in Sindhi Ajrak is so stylish, it is making us want to advise him to choose modeling as an alternative career option. Pairing an Ajrak with a shalwar kurta of your choice will make you stand out on Eid. Our diloun Kay Wazir-e-Ala is a total style icon!

    Hina Pervaiz Butt

PML-N’s Hina Pervaiz Butt is also a style icon in Punjab. They say orange is the new black, but we think green is the new orange, and we love this green minimalistic dress Hina is wearing. If you are looking to wear something simple with a touch of glitter, you can consider wearing something similar.

    Zulfi Bukhari

You can never go wrong with a gray waistcoat over a white shalwar kurta.

    Sherry Rehman

Sherry is elegantly flawless, and there is no doubt about it. She is often seen carrying a minimalistic look. This sky blue dress of hers, paired with silver ethnic earrings, can be a perfect choice for a summer Eid look.

    Moonis Elahi:

When in doubt, wear black. If you are still not sure what to wear this Eid, you can take some style inspiration from PMLQ’S Moonis Elahi, and go for a black shalwar kurta.

    Hina Rabbani Khar

Hina Rabbani Khar, is mostly seen in straight cuts and in plain clothes. Hina pairs her plain dresses almost always with pearl jewellery. As the temperature is going to be really high this Eid, you can go for a minimal look like Hina and can pair your solid colour Eid dress with statement pearl earrings.

    Zartaj Gul

Pink, in any shade promises to brighten your day, and what better occasion to wear bright clothes other than Eid? PTI’s Zartaj Gul, who gives happy go lucky vibes, is often spotted wearing bright shades.

PM Shehbaz, Imran Khan wish Hajj Mubarak to Muslims across the globe

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the ones who have received the blessings of Hajj-e-Akbar.

In a series of tweets, PM Shehbaz said this is a blessed occasion to pray for the prosperity of mankind and its deliverance from epidemics and diseases.

He prayed for the freedom of occupied Palestine and Kashmir to save the oppressed people. He also urged the nation to offer special prayers for elevation in the ranks of martyrs.

  • Japan’s ex-PM Shinzo Abe shot dead during electoral campaign

Japan’s ex-PM Shinzo Abe shot dead during electoral campaign

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead on Friday morning while giving a speech in western Japan. He was campaigning for a parliamentary election. Abe was 67.

Social media videos showed Abe lying bleeding on the ground in the city of Nara, which is close to Kyoto. A few hours later, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters at a tearful press conference that Abe was in a “very severe condition”. However, he could not sustain the injuries and died. He was shot twice in the neck and left collarbone.

The suspect reportedly served in maritime self-defence force for roughly three years, up until around 2005. Japanese media reported that he informed the police that he was angry with Abe and intended to kill him.

The shooter was subdued by security personnel present at the site, and the 41-year-old suspect is currently in police custody.

  • ‘Ghalat keeya Afridi ne’: Fawad Chaudhry says case against Rana Sanaullah was baseless

‘Ghalat keeya Afridi ne’: Fawad Chaudhry says case against Rana Sanaullah was baseless

Former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said on Thursday that the drug case against sitting Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah was baseless and neither the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nor Bani Gala had any role in lodging the cases against him.

Speaking on Express News‘ programme, Chaudhry said that Shehryar Afridi ‘ne ghalat keeya’ [had done wrong] when he stated on oath that 15kg of heroin was recovered from Rana Sana’s car.

“I said it when the case was brought to the cabinet by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) officer that it was baseless,” said Fawad.

It is to be noted that Rana Sana was arrested in July 2019 under the previous government by the ANF that claimed to have recovered 15kg of heroin from his vehicle.

  • Boris Johnson resigns as British Prime Minister

Boris Johnson resigns as British Prime Minister

Following the resignation of dozens of cabinet members, Boris Johnson will step down as the leader of the Conservative Party on Thursday, according to BBC. This will make room for a new prime minister of the United Kingdom.

At 1 pm, he is scheduled to address the country and lay out his agenda for the coming few weeks.

Although it is not yet known when the selection process to succeed him would start, Attorney General Suella Braverman has already entered the race. It took six weeks to hold the last Tory leadership contest.

Since the initial Cabinet walkouts on Tuesday, the PM has come under great pressure to resign. On Wednesday, he declared his intention to “keep going” in the position, but it now seems that the pressure may have been too much.

According to a government source, he thought about it overnight and decided to quit when he awoke “with a clarity of thinking.” Today, he will call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to ensure that the UK will continue to help Ukraine.

As a courtesy, he also informed the Queen of his plans this morning.

Just 24 hours after accepting the position left empty by Rishi Sunak’s departure, the new chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi, made the extraordinary decision to urge his employer to leave, making it very evident that the end was near.

Less than a day after accepting Mr Zahawi’s position as education secretary, Michelle Donelan, who may have held the record for the shortest tenure in UK history, announced her resignation.

Sajid Javid’s departure as health secretary on Tuesday evening set off a wave of resignations in the cabinet, which was swiftly followed by Mr Sunak’s resignation as chancellor and Sajid Javid’s resignation as health minister.

Although there have been 56 resignations overall, it seems like that number is continually rising.

Nearly all of those who resigned cited Mr Johnson’s integrity as a reason for their actions, citing scandals like Partygate and the more recent Chris Pincher affair; some, however, also highlighted problems with the government’s LGBT+ policy.

The way Mr Johnson handled the charges of sexual misbehaviour against Mr Pincher, who quit after allegedly “groping” two men last week, seems to have been the tipping point for many.

After Mr Javid and Mr Sunak left, Mr Johnson apologised for appointing Mr Pincher as deputy chief whip while being aware of the allegations made against him on Tuesday.

On Wednesday during PMQs, he apologised once more, but by that point, the crowd seemed to have fully turned against him.

The prime minister responded to a Tory MP’s question about whether there was ever a situation in which he would resign by saying: “The role of a prime minister in tough circumstances when he has been awarded a massive mandate is to keep going and that’s what I’m going to do.”

UPDATE: Boris Johnson’s nearly three-year term as prime minister of the United Kingdom ended abruptly on Thursday due to scandal and controversies.

Addressing outside Downing Street, Johnson argued that the selection process for the new Conservative Party leader should start right away, with a timeline to be revealed the following week. He declared that he would continue in that position until a new Tory leader was chosen.

Despite a glaring lack of support from his own party and mounting pressure from across the political spectrum to resign immediately, he has decided to stay in office.

Johnson acknowledged that “no one is remotely indispensable” in politics but expressed sadness at leaving “the best job in the world.”

At Westminster, the herd instinct is strong, and when the herd moves, it moves, Johnson observed in reference to members of his own ruling party who turned against him.

He tried to end his approximately six-minute speech on a positive note. “Our future together is golden, even though things often seem gloomy now.”

There are a tonne of tweets mocking PM Boris Johnson’s resignation on social media.

  • ‘I was stripped naked’: Tayyaba Gul reveals during hearing on harassment complaint against ex-Chairman NAB

‘I was stripped naked’: Tayyaba Gul reveals during hearing on harassment complaint against ex-Chairman NAB

Tayyaba Gul said on Thursday that Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal, the Head of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances and former National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman, threatened to destroy her life. She made this revelation in front of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

“Javed Iqbal would tell me that he will destroy my life within a minute,” said Gul.

“I met Iqbal during a meeting regarding missing persons,” she said, adding that when she asked him not to call her repeatedly, “he got angry”.

“My number was written on the request filed for the missing person, and he [Iqbal] kept calling me time and again,” she said. “I recorded Iqbal because he was a very powerful official and I wanted to expose him,” she added.

“My husband and I were arrested under the direction of the former chairman NAB. I was arrested by male officers and cannot even share the barbarity that I endured during the car ride.”

Tayyaba Gul also revealed that on the orders of DG NAB Lahore Saleem Shehzad, she was stripped naked during a search operation and her nude videos were shown to her husband.

    .

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) summoned Justice (retd), Javed Iqbal, today (July 7) after allegations of sexual harassment resurfaced against him. The former NAB chief was summoned on the complaint of Tayyaba Gul. She had written a letter to the PAC chairman levelling harassment allegations against Iqbal.

However, Justice (retd) Iqbal did not attend the PAC meeting.

PAC Chairman Noor Alam Khan also raised the issue of the allegations made by human rights activist Amina Masood Janjua in Hamid Mir’s show ‘Capital Talk’ on Geo News.

Ms Janjua revealed that when a woman went to the commission to inquire about her missing husband’s whereabouts, Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal said to her: “You are so beautiful. Why do you need a husband?”

The same allegations were previously made by Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leader Manzoor Pashteen in 2018. He narrated the same incident while talking on Neo News‘ programme Khabar Kay Peechay.

President Alvi writes to PM Shehbaz on violence against journalists

President Arif Alvi has written a letter to Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and expressed his concern at the pressure being put on journalists for voicing their opinion.

“Recent events of violence against journalists reflect a mindset of intolerance, that has negative repercussions both on the future of democracy as well as freedom of expression as guaranteed by Article 19 in our constitution. Besides creating fear in Pakistan, such actions also come under international focus and tarnish the image of our country,” writes Alvi.

“Among those killed were Mr. Aziz Memon and Mr. Nazim Jokhio. Mr. Matiullah Jan was abducted in broad daylight from a busy area of Islamabad. Mr. Asad Ali Toor and Mr. Absar were assaulted and injured by unidentified men. and Mr. Moeed Pirzada at various Police Stations in a number of cities across the country.”

President Alvi stated that the law enforcement agencies may be directed to ensure the protection of journalists and media persons.

  • Hamza Shehbaz’s electricity relief package suspended by ECP till July 17

Hamza Shehbaz’s electricity relief package suspended by ECP till July 17

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday suspended Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Hamza Shehbaz’s electricity relief package, “Roshan Gharana Programme”, which offers free electricity to households that consume up to 100 units till July 17.

Hamza Shehbaz announced on Monday that the provincial government would bear the power cost of households consuming up to 100 units of electricity in a month.

A three-member bench of the ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja issued a stay order against the implementation of the CM’s announcement.

The ECP sought a reply from the provincial chief executive on July 7.

The reply submitted by Hamza’s counsel stated that the CM’s relief package is for the entire province except for the constituencies where the by-polls are being held.

“No election is being staged in areas where Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) supplies electric power,” Hamza’s counsel maintained.

At this, CEC Sultan asked why Hamza held a separate press conference if the programme was already included in the budget.

“The announcement garnered more reaction than the programme’s approval in the budget. There was no need to make a separate announcement for it if was already a part of the budget,” the CEC remarked.
