  • Punjab government revokes ban on TLP

Punjab government revokes ban on TLP

The government on Sunday revoked the ban on Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

The notification in this regard was issued by the Ministry of Interior on Sunday, a day before a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security is being held in the National Assembly in which the Opposition members are expected to debate on this matter.

“The provincial cabinet has considered the request of the organisation and in view of the assurance and commitment by the organisation, is of the opinion that the said organisation shall abide by the Constitution and laws of the country and therefore, keeping in view the larger national interest and long term perspective to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future, the government of Punjab has proposed to the federal government to consider revoking of proscription of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan,” read the notification.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (1) of Section 11U of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 (as amended), the federal government is pleased to remove the name of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan from the First Schedule of the said Act as a proscribed organisation for the purposes of the said Act,” said the notification.

TLP had been placed in the First Schedule as a proscribed organisation by the federal government on April 15 this year on the recommendation of the Home Department of Punjab.

The Punjab government initiated the process to unban TLP last week. Punjab Home Department sent a summary for the revocation of the TLP ban to Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Usman Buzdar and his cabinet.

  • ‘Zahir Jaffer is directed to mend his attitude, otherwise his attendance will be exempted’: Islamabad Court

‘Zahir Jaffer is directed to mend his attitude, otherwise his attendance will be exempted’: Islamabad Court

A sessions court in Islamabad issued a written order warning Zahir Jaffer, the primary accused in the Noor Mukadam murder case, that his court appearances would be disallowed if he doesn’t mend his attitude, reports Dawn.

“Zahir Zakir created fuss in the court and tried to interfere in the proceedings. He is directed to mend his attitude otherwise his attendance will be exempted from the court and he will be taken on video link from jail,” read the court order.

Zahir Jaffer was kicked out of an Islamabad sessions court on Wednesday for interrupting and misbehaving with the judge, Samaa has reported. In a video that was widely shared on social media, Zahir can be seen being dragged out of court by policemen. As per media reports, he misbehaved and used derogatory language in the court.

Journalist Zubair Ali Khan had tweeted that Zahir Jaffer in court said, “I’m giving you guys an opportunity to hang me but still you guys are dragging this, this shows it is all a puppet show.”

  • ’Pre-planned scam’: ECP releases report on by-poll in Daska’s NA-75 constituency

’Pre-planned scam’: ECP releases report on by-poll in Daska’s NA-75 constituency

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday released a report on the February by-poll in Daska’s NA-75 constituency.

The report concluded that election officials, police, and the local administration failed to play their “designated role in a requisite manner and were found [to be] puppets in the hands of their unlawful masters” during the by-election, reports Dawn.

A by-poll was held in the constituency in April, with PML-N’s Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar winning the contest by securing 110,075 votes against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Ali Asjad Malhi, who had bagged 93,433 votes.

“The report — submitted by Punjab Joint Election Commissioner Saeed Gul to the Election Commission of Pakistan secretary — said the statement given by the 20 Presiding Officer (POs) who were forcefully taken to some unknown places invoked the point that … facts were being concealed by the PO.”

“In fact, their manipulated replies in the investigation of [them] being taken to unknown places and any interaction or forceful approach by someone further aired the suspicion that they were vindicated or backed up by someone,” the report says.

“Statement of SAPOs exposed that one PO willingly took the tamper-evident bag with him in a shopping bag.”

“Circumstantial evidence, written statements of some POs, SAPOs, most of the drivers and very few of the police personnel and CDR data from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority clearly prove that aforesaid POs, under some planned scheme, left their respective polling stations in private vehicles and reached Sialkot by staying first at Qila Kalar Wala Police Station/ Satra Police Station, office of the DSP, Pasrur, and Mundeke, etc. around after nearly 08:30pm,” read the report.

“They remained at some unknown building situated at Shahabpura/Ugoke Road near Zohra Hospital [in Sialkot] for more than seven hours and after that, they were transported in the police security to [the] office of the RO at Jaisarwala,” it said.

“Before reaching their destination, all the POs were shifted in police vans from a Toyota Hiace.”

The inquiry also found that 17 POs had requested an exemption from by-election duties. When the requests were scrutinised, “it was surprisingly revealed that handwriting on all TCS (Tranzum Courier Service) envelopes [containing the requests] was same that created further doubts”.

“In light of the afore-described facts, it can be conclusively determined that the activities of POs were suspicious, they became puppets in the hands of their controlling authority and even the replies submitted by them in response to the allegations of this maligned act were completely stereotyped and deceptive,” it concluded. “Hence, the role of presiding officers carries an obvious proportion in the whole conspiracy that [made] the by-election a dead duck.”

“These disclosed facts convincingly take us to the point that [the] mishap in the by-election not just involves the negligence or maladministration of the POs. It was a preplanned scam that could not be possible without the reinforcement from their controlling departments while they also paved the path for other persons’ involvement in this wicked game,” the report said.

Hidden Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras were found in a private school’s female washrooms in Karachi, reports Geo News.

Videos of women were being made with the hidden cameras, officials from the Sindh Education Department confirmed.

The Education Department issued a notification according to which the cameras were secretly installed in the female washroom as well as the men’s washroom used by both teachers and students.

However, the school administration has maintained that the cameras were installed in the washrooms for “monitoring purposes”.

According to the Sindh Educational Department, “Hidden CCTV cameras were installed behind a sheet with holes in the area of the washbasins situated with the toilets of girls and boys/washrooms, so that one can easily watch the movements of male and female students and staff,” as per Dawn.

An inquiry committee of the inspection directorate later in the day served a notice to the school administration, asking its principal or a senior official to appear before the department on November 4.

However, no official from the school turned up in disregard of the orders.

After that, the Sindh Education Department on Friday suspended the registration of the said private school and asked its administration to furnish a show-cause notice.

According to the notice, the registration of the school will remain suspended until the completion of the investigation.

  • ‘Jam Awais returned my brother in kafan’: Nazim Jokhio’s brother speaks out against PPP MPA

Nazim Jokhio’s brother Azam, while talking to BBC Urdu’s Riaz Sohail, revealed: “I blindly trusted Jam Awais and took my brother Nazim to meet him and he [Jam] returned my brother in kafan (shroud).”

Jokhio, the youngest one of his siblings, was allegedly tortured to death for recording Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPA Jam Awais’ hunting expedition of a highly rare bird species along with his Arab guests.

Azam told the media outlet that after repeated calls from Jam’s people, he asked his brother to delete the video. He said he was not “afraid”. After this, Jam’s manager reached their home and asked for Nazim.

“My brother had refused to go with him but I insisted,” he said while adding that he had been elected a member of the district council and he had confidence in them.

Upon reaching, Jam’s people started torturing Nazim with sticks and butts of the gun.

“I pleaded in front of him [Jam] and apologised but he didn’t listen and said that you have insulted my guests. They kept beating him and locked him in a room. They asked me to leave and come in the morning. At 5am, I got the news that they had beaten him to death”, Azam said.

MPA Sindh Assembly along with two suspects, Haider and Mir Ali, have been remanded to police custody for three days.

During the hearing, the investigation officer informed the court that the prime suspect had surrendered to the police. Later, the judge ordered to present a progress report in the case at the next hearing and granted a three-day remand to the police.

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah had also taken notice of the incident.

  • ‘Three sugar mills in Sindh were shut down, leading to an increase in the price of sugar to Rs140 per kg’: PM Khan

‘Three sugar mills in Sindh were shut down, leading to an increase in the price of sugar to Rs140 per kg’: PM Khan

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan during an address at a ceremony in Attock on Friday said that Sindh shut down three operational sugar mills, which contributed to an increase in the price of sugar.

“The price of sugar in Pakistan has hit Rs140 per kg. I inquired why this was so. I learned that three sugar mills in Sindh, which were operational, were shut down,” the prime minister said.

The prime minister went on to say that he subsequently learnt that due to the reduced supply, the sugar mills in Punjab began to hoard the commodity.

“I told the chief secretary that our law forbids hoarding and so if the sugar mills are doing so, we must retrieve the stock and bring it out to the market so the price drops.”

“We found out that since July, the sugar mills have obtained a stay order against the rule. And so our government was unable to do anything,” PM Imran Khan said.

“This is a gross injustice that the sugar mafia earns billions after having broken the backs of our people. And when the government moves to do something, they obtain stay orders,” he remarked.

PM Khan claimed that there was uproar in India as well over high petrol prices and Pakistan still had the cheapest petrol prices in the region.

“In India today, there is uproar as well [over petrol prices] and the petrol price per litre is Rs150 while it is Rs200 in Bangladesh. [On the other hand] it is the lowest in Pakistan at Rs146,” the premier said.

“The biggest [impact] of what happened was that the oil price first decreased and now in the last three months it has doubled […] when oil becomes expensive, then everything becomes expensive.”

“When there was inflation in the whole world then obviously Pakistan is in this same world and not in the heavens so we also had to be affected. As a result, we fully tried and are still trying to protect our people from this inflation.”

The prime minister’s comments come the same day as the government increased petroleum prices by up to Rs8.14 per litre with immediate effect to ensure the revival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

Watch: Firdous Ashiq Awan’s reply on whether PM is a thief if petrol prices increase

Anchorperson Waseem Badami, while speaking with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Firdous Ashiq Awan on ARY News programme, ‘Hur Lamha Por Josh’, asked Awan that if the prices of petrol increase, does it mean that the prime minister (PM) is a thief.

“This is a difficult thing,” replied Awan laughingly.

“My innocent prime minister [Imran Khan] is saying this that innocent prime minister cannot be a thief.”

Badami said that since this is a generic question, should he take Awan’s answer as a yes or a no.

“Take the anwser for this in the middle,” replied Awan.

  • ‘Govt is only giving takleef’, Opposition slams price hike

The Opposition slammed Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s government for increasing petroleum prices once again and setting a new record in the country’s history.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif said, “Government officers are being changed because of incompetence but Imran Khan is still sitting on his seat after the biggest incompetence and corruption,” adding that it had been proved that the incumbent government could “only give takleef (trouble) to people instead of relief”.

“[PM] Imran Niazi has become a killer of people’s joy,” tweeted Shehbaz.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari took to Twitter and wrote, “Govt increase petrol in the dead of night by Rs8. Increase of almost 20rs in less than a month.”

PPP leader Sherry Rehman also slammed the government and tweeted, “Days after announcing a ‘relief package’, PTI govt drops another petrol bomb by hiking petrol prices by a whopping Rs8.14/L. Petrol prices now stand at a record Rs145.8/L. First time in Pakistan’s history that prices of all petroleum products are above Rs110/L.”

PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb demanded the resignation of PM Khan. “Increasing the price of petrol and sugar under the relief package is only increasing the hardships of the people and making life easier for the mafia and filling their pockets.”

Earlier today, the Opposition protested against the ‘petrol bomb’ by walking out during Senate proceedings.

Meanwhile, PPP Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi chose to protest the increase in petrol prices by cycling to Parliament House from Parliament Lodges.

The notification by the Home Department requested the provincial government to respond in three days.

After the likely approval from CM Buzdar and the provincial cabinet, the federal government will be moved to do away with TLP’s banned status, said the Home Department.

Earlier today, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed said that the chief of TLP, Saad Hussain Rizvi, had insisted on the closure of the French embassy in the country and asked that this issue is brought in the National Assembly, reports Dawn.

Moreover, the minister said, “I have made signatures on the previous agreement and I am steadfast on this. As for the rest of the problems, two ministers have been appointed and they will answer your queries.”

The Punjab government also decided to release 100 more activists of the proscribed organisation from different jails in the province. Previously 2,000 jailed activists of the banned organisation were released.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan hinted at the release of Saad Rizvi and said that the state cannot afford to ban a party that has a 2.5 million vote bank in Punjab.

  • Deadly US drone strike in Kabul did not break law, says Pentagon

Deadly US drone strike in Kabul did not break law, says Pentagon

Following an investigation, a Pentagon inspector general said that a United States (US) airstrike that killed 10 civilians in Afghanistan was a mistake but did not violate any laws and doesn’t recommend any disciplinary action, reported Al Jazeera.

US Air Force Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Sami Said stated: “They all have a genuine belief based on the information they had and the interpretation, that was a threat to US forces, an imminent threat to US forces. That’s a mistake. It’s a regrettable mistake. It’s an honest mistake. I understand the consequences, but it’s not criminal conduct, random conduct, negligence.”

Lt Gen Said admitted that there had been execution errors and communication breakdowns among the US forces at the time that led to civilian casualties.

Said was asked to investigate the August 29 drone strike on a white Toyota Corolla Sedan, which killed nine family members, including seven children and a man who worked for a US aid group.

According to the US air force general, the forces believed that the car they were following was an imminent threat as the US military had intelligence that Daesh militants were planning a fresh attack on the evacuation operations but they followed the wrong car.

He revealed, “We actually never ended up tracking the actual Toyota Corolla.”

He also admitted that the people involved in conducting the operation thought the house at the site of the target was empty.

“They were convinced that the compound didn’t have children in it. It turns out to be wrong,” he said. None of the individuals conducting the operation noticed a child entering the target area just two minutes before the attack was launched.

According to Dawn, Washington is working to pay financial reparations to the victims’ families but nothing has been finalised.
