Political Situation: Remaining Pak vs Aus matches shifted from Rawalpindi to Lahore

All T20I and ODI matches between Australia and Pakistan scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi have been relocated to Lahore, Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed announced on Friday.

The decision was taken amid rising political tensions in the Federal Capital. The Australian team will be provided with Presidental level security.

“We are providing the Australian team with Presidential levels of security. All remaining matches have been moved to Lahore due to the prevalent political situation in the country. We are extremely grateful for the Australian team and they are our esteemed guests,” said Ahmed.

The last Test match is scheduled to take place at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore from March 21-25. The first ODI is scheduled to be played on March 29.

  • Indian cricket board official makes false accusation, says PM Khan involved in match-fixing, deletes tweet later

Indian cricket board official makes false accusation, says PM Khan involved in match-fixing, deletes tweet later

Vice-President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Rajeev Shukla yesterday responded to Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s tweet about the current political situation of Pakistan.

Congratulating Pakistan Captain Baber Azam for his performance in the second Test match against Australia, PM Khan hinted at horse-trading by the Opposition parties in his tweet. “Unfortunately I could not watch this match as I am fighting on another front against match fixing where huge amounts of money are being used to lure my players!”

However, Rajeev Shukla misunderstood Imran Khan’s tweet and wrote, “ICC anti-corruption should take cognisance of this statement and coming from a prime minister who was also a legend cricketer.”

Shukla also tagged International Cricket Council (ICC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in the tweet.

Rajeev, after receiving many comments pointing out that PM Khan’s tweet was about the current political situation in Pakistan, deleted his tweet and said that he was “being sarcastic”.

“I was also being sarcastic on Imran Khan tweet of political match-fixing on the eve of Holi which is known for humour and colours. Bura na mano holi hai,” wrote Shukla.

However, Twitter users are not buying Shukla’s explanation.

  • Fear of clash between Govt, Opposition, PCB considering moving T20I, ODIs to Lahore from Pindi

Fear of clash between Govt, Opposition, PCB considering moving T20I, ODIs to Lahore from Pindi

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering moving the ODI’s and one T20I match to Lahore from Rawalpindi, considering the changing political situation in the capital, reports Geo News. The first ODI is scheduled to be played on March 29.

The “changing political scenario and chance of a conflict-like situation” is causing PCB to make alternative plans for the series.

However, PCB has yet to make a decision and has yet to cancel the hotel reservation in Islamabad, where both teams must check-in on March 26, when they come back from the Lahore test match, scheduled to take place this week.

“All the four white-ball matches will be shifted to Gaddafi Stadium where teams are set to play the final Test of the series starting from March 21 in case the political situation in Islamabad stays the same till March 20,” a PCB official said.

“If there is a marked change in the volatile political situation in Islamabad, we would stay with our original schedule and that is to organise all white-ball matches (from March 29-April 5) including three One-Dayers and one-off T20 at the Pindi Stadium. Otherwise, these matches will be shifted to Lahore.”

“We cannot take even one percent risk when it comes to the safety and security of both teams. Though the room booking at a leading hotel in Islamabad is intact, there is a growing possibility that the matches will now be held at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on the same dates. The hotel where teams stayed for the first Test and would be staying for limited-overs matches falls within the red-zone where political parties are planning all these activities. So, no change in the political situation in Islamabad by March 20 means all the four limited-overs matches will be shifted to Lahore.”

If the schedule is not changed the matches will be played in Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

  • FIFA to lift suspension imposed on Pakistan Football Federation soon after banning it last year

FIFA to lift suspension imposed on Pakistan Football Federation soon after banning it last year

Federation Internationale de Football Association’s (FIFA) appointed Normalisation Committee (NC) has reportedly regained control of Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) headquarters. The action will also pave the way for FIFA to lift the suspension on PFF.

The newly appointed chairman of FIFA’s appointed NC Haroon Malik announced the development on Twitter. He said, “Congratulations to the football family on the return of Football House. The FIFA NC recognises and lauds the contributions of Dr Fehmida Mirza in achieving this momentous milestone. We thank the entire football family for their support. It is now time to move forward together.”

Last year, a group of football officials led by Ashfaq Hussain Shah was elected as PFF president in the 2018 elections but not recognised by FIFA.

FIFA said its decision to suspend the PFF was prompted by the “hostile takeover”, which constituted a serious violation of its statutes.

However, the normalisation committee will likely resume its day-to-day affairs of PFF headquarters from Monday.

According to Geo News’ sources, the NC has already prepared an 8-month-long roadmap for elections in the PPF. The process will start later this month and will be supervised by the Government of Pakistan.
