Why did Bangladesh not give the T20I series trophy to Pakistan?

According to Geo Super, the Pakistan squad was left “surprised” after they did not get a trophy despite winning the series.

However, a spokesperson of the BCB told the management of the Pakistan team that they would hand over the trophy after the conclusion of the Test series.

The BCB further added that the head of the board was supposed to hand over the trophy to the Pakistani squad but it could not be done due to his unavailability.

The spokesperson said that officials of the board and sponsoring companies were not part of the bio-secure bubble, therefore, the trophy awarding ceremony could not take place in line with the Covid-19 protocols.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is set to play a two-match Test Series starting from November 26. The Second Test match will be played during December 4-8.

PM Khan wins Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award

Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has won the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award.

PM Khan has been given the award for his contribution to sports, including leading Pakistan cricket team to win the 1992 Cricket World Cup. He was declared International Sports Personality.

The ceremony to announce the winners of the eleventh edition of the MBR Creative Sports Award – the largest such award in terms of prize money and categories, and the first dedicated to creativity in sports – was held on Monday at Deep Dive Dubai, the world’s deepest pool, in the presence of Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed, Chairman of the Award’s Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Taking to Twitter, Senator Faisal Javed Khan shared the news of PM Khan’s achievement, saying: “PM Imran Khan wins prestigious Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award for his contribution to sports. Furious Shahid Afridi questions Bangladesh ‘if they want to progress’

Former captain of Pakistan cricket team Shahid Afridi congratulated Pakistan cricket team for winning the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh and at the same time, he furiously questioned the Bangladesh cricket team “if they want to progress”.

Taking to Twitter, Afridi expressed his displeasure over Bangladesh’s difficult pitches, saying: “Bangladesh really need to do some soul searching, do they want to win on such pitches and give ordinary performances abroad and in World Cups?”

“They have great talent and passion for the game but desperately need better pitches if they want to progress,” he added while giving them a piece of advice.

Bangladesh had a poor Super 12 stage in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. They failed to win a single game and were plagued with plenty of batting and bowling issues, including the loss of Shakib Al Hasan, who was ruled out with an injury in the middle of the tournament.

However, Bangladesh are a different beast altogether at home. They defeated Australia and New Zealand before the T20 World Cup and were hoping to get back to their winning ways in familiar conditions. But Pakistan, after a phenomenal form in the T20 World Cup, persisted their consistency, beating Bangladesh with 3-0 in the series.

Meanwhile, former cricketer Inzamam-ul-Haq and Chairman PCB Ramiz Raja also slammed Bangladesh cricket for not having enough competition for places in the side.

Though the matches were low-scoring, Pakistan managed to clinch the series through a clean sweep and now both teams will square off in a two-match Test series, beginning on Friday in Chittagong.

  • Peng Shuai: Missing Chinese tennis star appears in Beijing

Peng Shuai: Missing Chinese tennis star appears in Beijing

Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai has attended a tennis tournament in Beijing, according to official photos, amid mounting international concern about her whereabouts after she accused a senior Chinese leader of sexual assault.

China Open, which organised the tournament, published pictures of Peng at the Fila Kids Junior Tennis Challenger Finals on Sunday.

The photos were posted on the event’s official WeChat page.

Hu Xijin, editor of the Communist Party-owned Global Times, also released a 37-second video on Twitter that showed Peng watching the match with five other people.

The former doubles world number one had not been seen or heard from publicly since she said on social media on November 2 that former vice-premier Zhang Gaoli had coerced her into sex, and they later had an on-off consensual relationship.

Neither Zhang nor the Chinese government has commented on her allegation. Peng’s social media post was quickly deleted and the topic has been blocked from discussion on China’s heavily censored internet.

World tennis bodies have expressed concern, with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) threatening to pull tournaments out of China. The United States and the United Kingdom have called for evidence of Peng’s whereabouts and safety.

A spokesman for the WTA told Reuters news agency that the photographs and video footage of Peng that emerged on Sunday remain “insufficient” and do not address its concerns, reported Al Jazeera.

Peng’s appearance at the tournament came after she visited a popular restaurant in downtown Beijing on Saturday night.

Hu had also posted a video of the outing, which a restaurant manager confirmed to Reuters on Sunday.

Seven people including Peng were at the Sichuanese restaurant, said the manager, Zhou Hongwei, adding that they ate in a private room and were joined by the restaurant’s owner.

“It was crowded at the restaurant as usual,” Zhou said, showing a bill that included noodles and bamboo shoots. “They didn’t have much. I think they mostly chatted.”

Peng adds to a growing number of Chinese businesspeople, activists and citizens who have disappeared in recent years after criticising party figures or in crackdowns on corruption or pro-democracy and labour rights campaigns.

Some re-emerge weeks or months later without explanation, suggesting they are warned not to disclose they were detained or the reason.

Steve Simon, the WTA’s chairman and CEO, expressed concern for Peng’s safety on Saturday, despite Hu posting her videos in a restaurant.

“While it is positive to see her, it remains unclear if she is free and able to make decisions and take actions on her own, without coercion or external interference. This video alone is insufficient,” Simon said. “Our relationship with China is at a crossroads.”

The International Olympic Committee has remained quiet about the status of Peng, who competed in three Olympics, helping to contribute to the IOC’s multimillion-dollar revenue from broadcasting and sponsorships.

Emma Terho, the newly elected head of the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission that is charged with representing the interests of Olympic athletes, said in a statement Saturday: “We support the quiet diplomacy” approach favoured by the IOC.

Last week, the foreign arm of state TV issued a statement in English attributed to Peng that retracted her accusation against Zhang. The WTA’s Simon questioned its legitimacy, while others said it only increased their concern about her safety.

Meanwhile, Chinese billionaire Jack Ma’s public disappearance last year for almost three months made headlines across the world, as reports speculated that the charismatic businessman was either arrested or was maintaining a low profile after his comments against the Chinese regulators.

In a video shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the skipper can be seen candidly responding to the most asked questions about himself.

Answering the first question, Babar said he lives in Lahore and cited its traditional food specialities as one of the city’s standout experiences. He also noted that the city had produced some legends of the game.

To a query about his bat, Babar said he uses the Gray-Nicolls bat, adding that he plays with bats of different weights depending on the venue, pitch and condition.

“I carry 6-7 bats with me. The more bats I carry, the more confused I get, but I use my best bats,” the skipper revealed.

And how much does Babar Azam earn? The star batter said he would not answer the question.

Answering another question about when he will get married, Babar said: “I don’t know. My family knows it, but for now my focus is on cricket.”

About his cricket ideal, Babar said he admired former South Africa international AB de Villiers the most and had followed him from the start of his career. He was one of the best players of the world.

Babar finished the T20 World Cup as the highest run-scorer (303). He is the current top-ranked T20I batsman in the world. He was also the only Pakistani player in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 team of the tournament named by the International Cricket Council (ICC), and was nominated as its captain.

The 27-year-old is now the leading run-getter among Pakistani cricketers in the shortest format of the game.

Babar stands top in the list with 2,515 runs from 69 matches and is followed by veteran Pakistan cricketers Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik, who have 2,514 and 2,423 runs from 119 and 124 matches respectively.

Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik will miss the third and final T20I against Bangladesh today due to illness of his child and will depart for Dubai before the match.

Meanwhile, the national T20I squad will depart from Dhaka to Pakistan via Dubai on Tuesday. Usman Qadir and Imad Wasim will spend a couple of days in Dubai with their families.

As per details, the national Test side will now play the test matches in Chittagong on Tuesday for the first of the two Tests. Bowling consultant Vernon Philander will leave the side at the completion of the first Test as he was available for the three T20Is and the first Test.

Pakistan and Bangladesh will play two World Test Championship matches. The Chittagong Test will commence from November 26 and the second Test will be played in Dhaka from December 4-8.

Pakistan, after winning first two T20Is of the three-match series, will be playing the third and last T20I match today, November 22.

Babar Azam, Pakistani cricketers pen heartfelt notes for AB de Villiers after his retirement

Following AB de Villiers announcement about his retirement, cricket-lovers around the world are expressing their love for one of the finest players to have emerged from South Africa.

Among those who paid tributes to ABD was Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and other Pakistani cricketers, who also took to their social media handles to share how the star player has inspired them.

“You were my childhood inspiration and I always tried to learn from your charismatic approach,” Babar wrote on Twitter.

Recalling his first interaction with De Villiers, he added: “I still remember the first time I met you and how welcoming you were.”

“You have inspired many generations of cricket. Wish you the very best and a happy retirement.”

Shoaib Malik, Hassan Ali, Haris Rauf and Fakhar Zaman also lauded the South African, among others.

De Villiers, who announced his retirement from cricket on Friday, will be remembered as one of the sport’s great entertainers and one of the finest players to represent South Africa.

He was an outstanding batsman in all forms of international cricket, averaging more than 50 in both 118 Test matches and 228 One-Day Internationals.

  • Did Hassan Ali make the fastest ball record, leaving Shoaib Akhtar behind?

Did Hassan Ali make the fastest ball record, leaving Shoaib Akhtar behind?

Hassan Ali bagged Player of the Match award during Pakistan’s first T20 international of their three-match series against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Friday, which the Men In Green won by four wickets.

It seems that even the technical team at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium were impressed. So much so that they ended up making an error while recording his bowling speed, reporting it as 219kph.

Pakistan’s legendary speedster Shoaib Akhtar holds the record for bowling the fastest ball at 161.3 kph and it is next to impossible to bowl at a speed of 219kph.

Meanwhile, Ali did become the player to take the most number of international wickets in 2021, including Tests, T20Is, and ODIs as he reached the mark of 64 after he picked up 3-22, helping Pakistan restrict Bangladesh to 127-7.

Shaheen Shah Afridi is right behind him with 62 wickets, while Sri Lanka’s Dushmantha Chameera and South Africa’s Tabriz Shamsi have taken 50 wickets each.

Meanwhile, netizens were sure that the world record has been made. Here are a few tweets:

  • Tim Paine resigns ahead of Ashes after sending explicit messages to female co-worker

Tim Paine resigns ahead of Ashes after sending explicit messages to female co-worker

Australian cricketer Tim Paine has quit as Test captain less than three weeks before the men’s Ashes after the emergence of an investigation four years ago by Cricket Australia for sending explicit messages to a female co-worker.

Paine, who had been facing a race against time to be fit for the first Ashes Test on December 8, was named in a News Corp report as being at the centre of the case.

He faced the media in Hobart on Friday to announce he was resigning but will remain available for selection for the Ashes. The messages date back to 2017, months before Paine was recalled to the Test team after a seven-year absence, and a joint Cricket Australia and Cricket Tasmania investigation cleared him at the time.

“Today, I’m announcing my decision to stand down as the captain of the Australian men’s test team. It’s an incredibly difficult decision, but the right one for me, my family, and cricket,” Paine said as he read out a statement.

“As a background on my decision, nearly four years ago, I was involved in a text exchange with a then-colleague. At the time, the exchange was the subject of a thorough CA Integrity Unit investigation, throughout which I fully participated in and openly participated in.

“That investigation and a Cricket Tasmania HR investigation at the same time found that there had been no breach of the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct. Although exonerated, I deeply regretted this incident at the time, and still do today. I spoke to my wife and family at the time and am enormously grateful for their forgiveness and support. We thought this incident was behind us and that I could focus entirely on the team, as I have done for the last three or four years.

“However, I recently became aware that this private text exchange was going to become public. On reflection, my actions in 2017 do not meet the standard of an Australian cricket captain, or the wider community. I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and pain that I have caused to my wife, my family, and to the other party. I’m sorry for any damage that this does to the reputation of our sport.”

He added that he felt resignation was his only option and apologised to team-mates and supporters.

“I believe that it is the right decision for me to stand down as captain, effective immediately,” he said. “I do not want this to become an unwelcome disruption to the team ahead of what is a huge Ashes series.”

“It’s been the greatest privilege of my sporting life to lead the Australian men’s test team. I’m grateful for the support of my team-mates and proud of what we’ve been able to achieve together.

“To them, I ask for their understanding and forgiveness. To Australian cricket fans I’m deeply sorry that my past behaviour has impacted our game on the eve of the Ashes. For the disappointment I have caused to fans and the entire cricket community, I apologise.

“I will remain a committed member of the Australian cricket team and look forward with anticipation to what is a huge Ashes tour.”

A subsequent statement by Cricket Tasmania said the allegations had only been brought to their attention when theft charges were laid against the employee in mid-2018 and that no complaint had been made at the time of the messages in November 2017.

Paine was elevated to the captaincy in March 2018 following the explosive fallout from the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. Fast bowler Pat Cummins is Australia’s current vice-captain and had been tipped to assume the role once Paine retired. If Paine was not to play the series, Alex Carey would be the frontrunner to take the gloves.

The board accepted Paine’s resignation and has said that process of identifying and appointing a new Test captain will be accelerated.
