Political instability in Bangladesh: will they visit Pakistan for the Test series?

The Bangladesh cricket team’s arrival in Pakistan has been delayed due to protests and the tense situation in Bangladesh. They were supposed to reach Islamabad on August 7, but this has now been postponed for 48 hours. There is a possibility of a change in the series schedule.

The spokesperson of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told DAWN, “PCB and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have been in contact for two consecutive days, and both the boards are working on the revision of the schedule.”

He said, “PCB has sent a message to the Bangladesh board that Pakistan’s law and order situation is much better than in Bangladesh, and the Bangladeshi team can train and practice extra before the Test series.”

However, the BCB has yet to respond to this offer.

  • Domestic cricket to see high-performance camps, increased match fees: Mohsin Naqvi

Domestic cricket to see high-performance camps, increased match fees: Mohsin Naqvi

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi held a press conference in Lahore on Monday to share plans for domestic cricket and announce an increase in match fees for domestic players.

“There is no need to change the domestic structure, Pakistan’s domestic structure is not bad. We are launching the Domestic Champions Cup, held annually and played in all three formats to improve it further. One team will be allotted a high-performance camp,” he told the members of the press.

“Foreign players will also play in the Champions Cup, and domestic players’ match fees have also been increased. Five teams will participate in the Champions Cup, each with five legends.”

Talking about domestic cricket, he said that PCB will not tamper it. “There is no need for much change in the domestic infrastructure; because of the system, we were not able to select quality players.”

In response to a question about Waqr Younis’s responsibility, Naqvi said, “Waqar Younis is being given the responsibility to polish 30 boys. He has taken responsibility for making this team the best, and we will improve our domestic cricket in every way.”

“The chief selector will be able to select the players on merit, and the best players will be chosen for the team. The five players (Legend players) are also coming as advisors, and they will work with Waqar Younis and make an excellent advisory board,” Mohsin Naqvi added.

Advisor chairman Waqar Younis said, “The state of cricket is in front of us. It has to be improved. Cricket is our product. Unless it is fixed, cricket will not be able to move forward. When the chairman proposed that the Champions Cup should be held in which legends play a role, I liked this concept very much. It’s a good move, and I hope it pays off going forward.”

The news that Waqar Younis had been appointed as the chairman’s advisor to PCB was circulating in the media. However, PCB confirmed this news on Monday.

Former England batsman Graham Thorpe passes away

Former England cricketer and coach Graham Thorpe, known as one of the best Test batsmen of his time, has died at the age of 55 from an illness that he had been suffering from since time.

The England Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed his death, saying, “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away. There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham’s death.”

“More than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans worldwide. His skill was unquestioned, and his abilities and achievements across a 13-year international career brought happiness to his teammates and England and Surrey CCC supporters alike. Later, as a coach, he guided the best England Men’s talent to incredible victories across all game formats.”

“The cricket world is in mourning today. Our hearts go out to his wife Amanda, his children, father Geoff, and his family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time. We will always remember Graham for his extraordinary contributions to the sport.”

In 2002, Thorpe took a break from cricket to deal with his first marriage falling apart. The media humiliation and being separated from his two children caused a “total breakdown.” However, after a 13-month break, he returned to the Test team in 2003 with a brilliant century against South Africa at the Oval. The following year was the best of his career, with an average of 73.15 in 20 Test innings in 2004, all while batting at No. 5.

Thorpe was a skilled left-handed batter and a right-handed bowler. In his 12-year international career, he played exactly 100 Test matches and 82 ODIs. He also played 189 first-class matches for Surrey, scoring 49 centuries and averaging 45.04 runs before retiring in 2005.

Last hope for gold: when will Arshad Nadeem compete against Neeraj Chopra?

Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s only hope for a Gold medal at the Paris Olympics, is all set to take on Indian Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra.

Neeraj Chopra has always been a problematic opponent for Arshad, with a perfect record of 9-0. However, it’s important to note that Arshad won the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham with a massive throw of 90.18 meters, which is better than Neeraj’s personal best at any javelin event.

Fans will have to wait two days to find out, as both arc rivals will compete on August 6th in the qualifying rounds. The event will start at 1:20 PM (PST), with Group B starting at 2:50 PM (PST). If both qualify, they will go for the medals in the final on August 8th, which begins at 11:25 PM (PST).

Arshad Nadeem made history in the last Olympics by reaching an Olympic athletics final but finished fifth. This time, he could be Neeraj Chopra’s biggest competitor.

According to Express News, the former captain was offered to become the chief executive officer (CEO) or adviser to the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), but due to other engagements, he is not available for the full-time job.

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi is also the Federal Interior Minister. He is often criticized for giving little time to cricket. To solve this problem, he decided to hand over affairs of the game to a former cricketer.

However, the former captain apologized to the Chairman and said he now permanently resides in Karachi because of his family. He often has to go to Australia. The post of CEO does not exist in the new constitution, but the constitution can be changed.
