  • TikTok to launch most awaited feature soon

TikTok to launch most awaited feature soon

TikTok is likely to launch a new feature for its users, one that has been eagerly awaited since a long time. TikTok’s latest feature is called ‘Delete and Re-Edit’- through this feature, users will be able to edit and repost any video without deleting it in the app.

This feature will be very useful for users who prefer to create and edit videos directly in TikTok; besides, videos created against community guidelines can be edited instead of deleted.

This feature will allow users to edit pre-uploaded videos without the need to delete videos. But if you are using another tool, i.e. CapCut, for your clips, you won’t be able to use this feature.

If you edit your clips within TikTok, this feature will allow you to edit your clips again. For example, if you made a video and you get a better idea or want to try a different method, you can re-edit it.

TikTok has not yet announced the official inclusion of this feature, but the feature will be added to the app soon.

  • AI is ‘accelerating the climate crisis’, expert warns

AI is ‘accelerating the climate crisis’, expert warns

If you care about the environment, think twice about using AI.

Generative artificial intelligence uses 30 times more energy than a traditional search engine, warns researcher Sasha Luccioni, on a mission to raise awareness about the environmental impact of the hot new technology.

Recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in the world of AI by the American magazine Time in 2024, the Canadian computer scientist of Russian origin has sought for several years to quantify the emissions of programs like ChatGPT or Midjourney.

“I find it particularly disappointing that generative AI is used to search the Internet,” laments the researcher, who spoke with AFP on the sidelines of the ALL IN artificial intelligence conference in Montreal.

The language models on which the programs are based require enormous computing capacities to train on billions of data points, necessitating powerful servers.

Then, there’s the energy used to respond to each individual user’s requests.

Instead of simply extracting information, “like a search engine would do to find the capital of a country, for example,” AI programs “generate new information,” making the whole thing “much more energy-intensive,” she explains. According to the International Energy Agency, the combined AI and the cryptocurrency sectors consumed nearly 460 terawatt hours of electricity in 2022 — two percent of total global production.

    Energy efficiency

A leading researcher on the impact of AI on climate, Luccioni participated in 2020 in the creation of a tool for developers to quantify the carbon footprint of running a piece of code. “CodeCarbon” has since been downloaded more than a million times.

Head of the climate strategy of startup Hugging Face, a platform for sharing open-access AI models, she is now working on creating a certification system for algorithms.

Similar to the program from the US Environmental Protection Agency that awards scores based on the energy consumption of electronic devices and appliances, it would make it possible to know an AI product’s energy consumption in order to encourage users and developers to “make better decisions.”

“We don’t take into account water or rare materials,” she acknowledges, “but at least we know that for a specific task, we can measure energy efficiency and say that this model has an A+, and that model has a D,” she says.

    Transparency

In order to develop her tool, Luccioni is experimenting with it on generative AI models that are accessible to everyone, or open source, but she would also like to do it on commercial models from Google or ChatGPT-creator OpenAI, which have been reluctant to agree.

Although Microsoft and Google have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by the end of the decade, the US tech giants saw their greenhouse gas emissions soar in 2023 because of AI: up 48 percent for Google compared to 2019 and 29 percent for Microsoft compared to 2020.

“We are accelerating the climate crisis,” says Luccioni, calling for more transparency from tech companies.

The solution, she says, could come from governments that, for the moment, are “flying blindly,” without knowing what is “in the data sets or how the algorithms are trained.”

“Once we have transparency, we can start legislating.”

    ‘Energy sobriety’

It is also necessary to “explain to people what generative AI can and cannot do, and at what cost,” according to Luccioni.

Huawei introduces world’s first triple-foldable phone

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has introduced the world’s first triple-foldable phone, Mate XT.

For the past few months, there have been reports that Huawei will introduce the world’s first triple-foldable phone, but the company has not given any explanation. Now, the company has surprised everyone by introducing the world’s first triple-foldable phone just hours after Apple introduced the iPhone 16.

According to Reuters, Huawei’s world-first triple-foldable phone also has artificial intelligence (AI) features and tools. The phone has AI video, photo, and voice-adding features, while it also has the best and most powerful camera technology.

The phone’s back has three cameras: the main 50-megapixel camera and the other two 12-megapixel cameras. The front has an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

The phone packs a 5600 mAh battery with a 56-watt fast charger and a 50-watt wireless charger, 16GB of RAM, and different memory modules, including 128, 256, and 512GB modules.

The phone’s highlight is its unique design, which looks like the English letter Z when opened. This phone has one more screen than conventional phones of today.

The phone is designed so that the screen is less than 7 inches when used like a traditional phone, but it becomes 10 inches when fully opened and can also be used as a tablet.

The phone’s price starts at $2800 (about 8 lakh Pakistani rupees), while the highest memory module costs $3300 (more than 9 lakh Pakistani rupees).

The phone will be sold worldwide, including in China, on September 20, the same day the iPhone 16 will be sold worldwide.

  • Google faces lawsuit over alleged monopoly in web ad technology

Google faces lawsuit over alleged monopoly in web ad technology

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against Google for establishing an illegal monopoly over web ad technology, following a previous ruling that found Google had an illegal monopoly in the search engine market in the United States.

Yesterday, during the hearing in the federal judge’s court in Alexandria, Virginia, USA, Google’s lawyer, along with the lawyers of the American states and the Department of Justice, presented their arguments.

Government regulators accuse Google of illegally monopolizing web advertising technology and creating software that matches advertisers and publishers.

Because of Google’s dominance in the transfer of funds for buying and selling ads on such software, the company makes 36 cents on every dollar it makes. The court also accused Google of controlling the advertising exchange market that connects advertisers and buyers.

The US Department of Justice lawyer argued that even if it had been a monopoly, it would have been fine, but here, a row of monopolies has been set up.

Google’s lawyer said, “The government’s case is based on the Internet of the past when desktop computers ruled, and Internet users carefully typed a website address into a URL field. Today, the advertiser’s tendency is more towards social media companies like TikTok or streaming TV services.”

Earlier, the Washington, DC court faced a major defeat against Google in the case of an illegal monopoly on the search engine.

In its ruling, the court accused Google of paying companies like Apple hundreds of billions of dollars annually to maintain its monopoly on search engines so that when consumers buy iPhones or other gadgets from these companies, their default search engine should be Google.

  • Should you expect the iPhone 16 Pro Max price to reach PKR 1 million?

Should you expect the iPhone 16 Pro Max price to reach PKR 1 million?

The Cupertino-based tech giant, Apple, is expected to unveil its best flagship ever made today. The company announced the launch event for the iPhone 16 series over a week ago, and the launch day is finally here.

Considering leaks from multiple insiders and reliable sources, the exciting features of the iPhone 16 series will be the larger display, the new capture button, and AI integration.

Apple has maintained the same screen size since November 2020, when it introduced the iPhone 12.

Not only will the Pro models get bigger screens, but the base model, the iPhone 16 is also expected to feature a bigger screen than the iPhone 15.

Moreover, the new capture button, as per the latest reports, is also likely to be seen in all iPhone models, including the standard iPhone 16 variant.

The launch event will take place today, and it will be streamed on Apple’s official website and YouTube channel at 10 PM (Pakistan time).

Even though it will be a super-expensive smartphone, especially for Pakistan, there is a lot of talk and anticipation for the iPhone 16 in Pakistan.

It is worth mentioning that last year when the iPhone 15 Pro Max was introduced, it was priced as high as Rs900,000 and was sold in the black market during the initial days.

As of now, the top model of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is still selling for as high as Rs700,000 (including PTA approval charges).

Considering this price, we can expect the iPhone 16 Pro Max to be priced as high as Rs1 million including PTA tax, as there is no official Apple store in Pakistan, and those who import it are likely to sell it at their ‘own’ price.

At this point, it is unknown and not officially announced what the price of the iPhone 16 will be.

Speaking to a mobile seller in Singapore Plaza, Rawalpindi, it was revealed that once iPhone 16 models are imported by shop owners in Pakistan, interested customers who want to get it earlier or right after launch will not hesitate to pay as much as Rs1 million.

He said they already have ‘many’ customers from twin cities who have asked to pre-book their iPhone 16 Pro Max and are willing to pay this price if they get it in the first week of launch.

Government employees banned from sharing political views on social media

Pakistan’s government has banned its employees from sharing political or religious opinions with the media and on social media platforms.

The Establishment Division has reportedly issued an office memorandum for government employees. According to the rules, no government employee can speak on any media platform without the government’s permission.

The employees are also not allowed to share official documents or information with unrelated employees, citizens, or the press.

The public servants cannot express opinions and facts on the media or social media, which may affect the government’s reputation.

Civil servants, too, cannot speak to the media, which could affect relations with other countries.

The office memorandum also clearly states that violating guidelines will result in consequences and that all government employees must adhere to the set instructions.

The memorandum also highlights that government institutions have been ordered to actively monitor and remove objectionable content from their social media platforms. All federal secretaries, additional secretaries, heads of departments, and chief secretaries are expected to ensure the implementation of the directives.
