    Daily round-up: Oct. 29, 2024

    1. Did you know that suicide risk is highest on Mondays around the globe? A research study led by Yoonhee Kim, an associate professor at the University of Tokyo, has connected the beginning of the workweek to an increase in cases.

15-18% of worldwide suicides have been recorded on a Monday — a pattern observed in many countries across North America, Asia, and Europe.

The analysis, which examined data from 740 locations in 26 countries over nearly 50 years, reveals that weekends generally have lower suicide rates in most regions.

However, in Central and South America, Finland, and South Africa, the chances of suicide increase over the weekend, indicating the cultural and societal factors that influence mental health trends across the globe.

      2. Google is developing an AI technology called “Project Jarvis” that can control computers and do tasks like research and shopping through a web browser, particularly Chrome.

It will carry out online tasks by interpreting screenshots and interacting with web pages.

The AI will be publically shared in December along with the Gemini language model, but this timeline isn’t certain. Google may first test Jarvis with a small group to fix any issues.

        3. According to Interior Minister Mohsin Raza Naqvi, about 45,000 to 50,000 passport applications are being received by the ministry on daily — a number that exceeds the production capacity and is consequently creating a backlog.

The Machine Readable Passport (MRP) system was established in 2004 for 30 regional offices and 10 missions abroad, which has not been upgraded despite the number of offices increasing to 223 and missions to 93.

Now, the production facility can only manage 20,000 to 22,000 applications per day, which has caused long delays. To tackle the issue, the government has made the production facility operational 24/7 in three shifts.

The move has been made after reports of citizens facing delays of up to two months, affecting patients in need of urgent medical treatment, students applying to foreign universities, and those seeking work visas.

          4. Pakistan’s opener, Fakhar Zaman, is reportedly considering retirement after being dropped from the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) central contract, according to Urdupoint.

The batter has been asked to undergo another fitness test in January, revealing double standards. Usman Khan stopped during the third round of the 2-kilometre run but not only received a contract but also made it into the squad.

            5. People in Karachi have recently been actively protesting various issues. This week began with a Climate March, where participants carried placards and banners against climate change, highlighting anti-environmental policies.

Participants also held the Palestinian flag.

Speakers at the Friar Hall Climate March addressed issues such as deforestation, rising sea levels, and melting glaciers in a heatwave-wrapped world.

            1. Sher Afzal Marwat fears governor rule in KP ‘because of Ali Amin Gandapur’

Sher Afzal Marwat fears governor rule in KP ‘because of Ali Amin Gandapur’

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker Sher Afzal Marwat has suggested handing over the authority of holding party protests to someone else in place of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur, fearing that existing practice could lead to imposition of governor’s rule in the province.

“I have no disagreement with Ali Amin Gandapur and I, in fact, admire him. However, Ali Amin is the CM and other parties, including Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), unfairly benefit from his involvement in the protest,” Marwat said while speaking to a private media outlet.

Expressing concern over the possible imposition of governor’s rule in KP, Marwat said that the federal government, on the pretext of using provincial government’s machinery in PTI’s protest, could impose governor’s rule.

Marwat stated that PTI leadership should take the lead in the protests instead of Ali Amin Gandapur. “We can benefit from Gandapur’s support.”

He also stressed the need for the formation of a committee to plan party protests.

“Our priority should be the release of PTI founder Imran Khan from jail,” he said.

            2. ‘PTI’s social media managed from Germany, London,’ claims Fawad Chaudhry

‘PTI’s social media managed from Germany, London,’ claims Fawad Chaudhry

Social media teams associated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have come under vehement criticism by former Minister and ex-member of the party, Chaudhry Fawad Hussain.

Appearing on Samaa’s programme, Mere Sawal with Absar Alam, the former Information and Broadcasting Minister, stated that YouTubers like Adil Raja, a former army major who is now pro-PTI, have earned 50,000 pounds using Imran Khan’s name in their vlogs within just two months.

“Adil Raja has nothing to do with PTI, and he is not even associated with PTI,” Fawad said.

Criticising PTI’s social media cell, he declared that one person is operating 30 social media accounts from Germany and London. “Un ki wajah se hum is condition mein hain.”

“Pseudo PTI’s social media cell is even playing in the hands of foreign intelligence agencies like India’s RAW and banned outfit Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA),” Hussain alleged.

He said that multiple pseudo-PTI YouTubers had harshly criticised journalists and Generals in Pakistan, which ultimately led them to turn against PTI.

The leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf showed a clear divide following Hussain’s harsh comments on advocate Salman Akram Raja last week.

“Salman Akram Raja has been Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer from Panama until now. Who are the rest of these people,” Chaudhry Fawad Hussain asked, “The establishment has put us in jails and imposed its representatives on the party. As long as Imran Khan is in jail, they have a political life; when Imran Khan comes out from behind bars, they won’t even be visible,” Ch Fawad Hussain said on X (formerly Twitter).

              Daily round-up: Oct. 28, 2024

              1. Teachers in Punjab have boycotted the Training Need Assessment (TNA) test — an examination which evaluates their training needs in the School Education Department (SED).

The government created the TNA App to help in efficient online testing using multiple-choice questions to assess key teaching skills, and helping to identify areas for professional growth.

With 720 centres set up for the test, and 60 teachers expected at each location, around 43,000 primary school teachers (PSTs) were supposed to take the test over the weekend but only 80 showed up.

                2. The Swat River has been diverted for the Mohmand Dam project, confirmed by Asim Rauf Khan, Project Director and General Manager of WAPDA, and Chief Engineer Fasih Ullah.

About 35% of the dam is built, and 98% of the tunnel work is done. When finished, the dam is expected to generate 800 megawatts of electricity each year, with completion set for 2027.

It will store 1.29 million acre-feet of water, manage floods, produce low-cost electricity, and deliver 300 million gallons of drinking water to Peshawar every day.

                3. With on-going tensions in the middle east and Iran being one of Israeli targets, Pakistan is now closely monitoring air traffic entering its airspace. Pakistani air traffic control is now reviewing all incoming flights from the west to ensure safety.

And now that Iran has closed its airspace, flights passing through Iran are now redirected through Muscat which is affecting a number of international routes and has resulted in increased security checks for planes coming from the west.

                  4. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially announced Mohammad Rizwan as the new captain for the ODI and T20 teams, with Salman Ali Agha as the vice-captain. This decision comes after former captain Babar Azam stepped down from his role earlier this month. Rizwan will lead the team in the upcoming limited-overs tours of Australia and Zimbabwe.

Apart from this PCB has finalized the central contract list for the 2024-25 season, which will be effective from July 1, 2024.

Notably, Fakhar Zaman has not been awarded a central contract this time around. His exclusion is speculated to be due to his dissent towards PCB regarding the dropping of Babar Azam from the squad and his failure in fitness tests.

                  5. Manufacturers of essential foreign goods in Pakistan have not seen a major declines. In comparison, sales of foreign soft drinks, bottled water, and fast food have dropped amid consumer boycotts of Israeli products.

Dawn highlighted that sales for Nestlé Pakistan were Rs 149.2 billion for the nine months ending September 30 —- a slight drop of 1.3% from Rs151 billion the previous year.

                  1. Mohsin Naqvi reveals why Fakhar Zaman dropped from central contract

Mohsin Naqvi reveals why Fakhar Zaman dropped from central contract

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi has explained the reason behind sacking Fakhar Zaman from the central contract.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, October 27, Naqvi said, “Any national team player cannot go around tweeting his opinion on decisions made by the selection committee.”

Fakhar Zaman had tweeted in support of Babar Azam before the second Test match against England, after Babar was dropped from the side due to poor form. Fakhar wroite, “Dropping Babar would send a negative message to the Test team.” In his tweet, Fakhar also mentioned Virat Kohli, comparing the struggles of both players.

                    Muhammad Rizwan appointed captain:

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made wicketkeeper batsman Muhammad Rizwan the captain of ODI and T20 teams.

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi announced the captain and vice-captain of the ODI and T20 teams while holding a press conference in Lahore.

Mohsin Naqvi said, “The board has made Mohammad Rizwan the captain of the ODI and T20 team, while Salman Ali Agha has been appointed as the vice-captain of the ODI and T20 team.”

Chairman PCB said, “The selection committee worked very hard on the central contract, the selection committee worked non-stop in the last two tests, and the selection committee had a big hand in the victory. I will praise them.”

Mohsin Naqvi said, “We want Babar Azam to return to form. Babar Azam is an asset of Pakistan. Babar contacted me and said that he doesn’t want to play as a captain. Babar Azam had a decision; he wanted to focus on the game.”

Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the squad for the tours of Australia and Zimbabwe. The Pakistan team will play three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is) in Australia, while the tour of Zimbabwe will also feature three ODIs and three T20Is.

According to a statement by the PCB, Babar Azam, Naseem Shah, and Shaheen Afridi will be rested for the tour of Zimbabwe, while PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will announce the captain for the white-ball teams.

Performers from domestic cricket have been given more importance for the Zimbabwe tour.

                  2. Daily round-up: Oct. 27, 2024

                    Daily round-up: Oct. 27, 2024

                    1. In general, people believe that the more secluded and mildly populated a place is, the less polluted and corrupted it would be. But it seems like that is not always the case because surprisingly, all water samples collected from the beautiful region of Gilgit have been found to be 100 per cent contaminated, making the water unsuitable for drinking.

Similarly, samples from the Sindh cities of Mirpurkhas and Shaheed Benazirabad are also deemed completely unsafe for human consumption.

Details presented by the Ministry of Water Resources in the National Assembly reveal that 94% of drinking water in Multan, 93% in Karachi, and 92% in Badin is contaminated.

In Bahawalpur, 76% of the water is polluted, while Sargodha has 83% unsafe water, and Faisalabad and Sheikhupura report 59% and 60%, respectively, of their water being unfit for drinking.

In Abbottabad and Khuzdar, 55% of the water is contaminated, with Loralai and Quetta showing 59%. Meanwhile, 80% of drinking water in Hyderabad, 67% in Sukkur, and 70% in Muzaffar is also unsafe.

Following the 18th Amendment, the responsibility for ensuring safe drinking water and enhancing its quality now lies with the provincial governments.

                      2. According to the World Justice Project’s (WJP) Rule of Law Index for 2024, Pakistan has ~ slightly ~ improved, climbing one spot to rank 129th out of (wait for it…) 142 countries evaluated.

In the global category of order and security, Pakistan ranks 140th i.e. the third worst in the world.

Regionally, Pakistan is fifth out of six South Asian countries evaluated and while an overall score indicates decline from 2019 to 2023, the 2024 report shows a change in this trend after five years of decline.

                        3. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that Pakistan’s inflation rate, which has decreased from 29% to 12.6% this year, will further fall to 10.6% by 2025, according to Jihad Azour, the IMF’s Director for the Middle East and Central Asia.

In a recent statement regarding Pakistan’s economic outlook, Azour noted that the country’s economy is anticipated to grow at a rate of 3.2% in the 2024-25 fiscal year, indicating a positive sign of economic recovery.

                          4. New Zealand defeated India in the second Test to take a decisive lead of 2-0 in the three-match series.

In the match played in Pune, New Zealand defeated India by 113 runs.

Chasing New Zealand’s 359 runs on the third day of play, the Indian team was bowled out for 245 runs.

After 12 years, India has lost a Test series at home.

                            5. According to the recent data by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the local manufacturing sector maintained its upward trend in September 2024, with domestic companies producing or assembling 2.15 million units.

22.59 million locally manufactured or assembled mobile phones were sold in nine months which marks a 74% year-on-year increase.

                            1. Gold price in Pakistan surges by Rs2,000 per tola after two-day decline

Gold price in Pakistan surges by Rs2,000 per tola after two-day decline

Gold price in Pakistan resumed its upward trend on Saturday after dropping in the previous two trading sessions.

According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), which releases gold rates on a daily basis, the price of the precious metal increased by Rs2,000 per tola to Rs284,300.

The ten-gramme gold price was also recorded up by Rs1,714, reaching Rs243,741, which means the gold rate currently stands at Rs24,374 per gramme in Pakistani market.

Silver prices in the country remained unchanged and were traded at Rs3,350 per tola.

Gold prices also increased in the international market as the price per ounce was recorded at $2,748 after observing an increase of $22.

Notably, before today’s gain, the gold price had increased for seven straight sessions before witnessing a decline on October 24 and 25. The gold price recorded a total loss of Rs3,100 per tola this week, falling Rs2,300 per tola on Thursday and Rs800 per tola on Friday.

Interestingly, the gold rate in Pakistan was recorded at its historic peak of Rs285,400 per tola. The latest price of gold is about Rs1,100 lower than the historic high observed this week.

As gold is considered a hedge against economic and political uncertainties, the demand for the yellow metal is on the rise internationally as Middle East tensions and uncertainty regarding the upcoming US election spurred demand for safe-haven assets.

                            2. ‘Balanced judge’: PTI’s Sher Afzal Marwat all praise for Chief Justice Yahya Afridi

‘Balanced judge’: PTI’s Sher Afzal Marwat all praise for Chief Justice Yahya Afridi

Hours after Yahya Afridi was sworn in as the 30th chief justice of Pakistan (CJP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and lawmaker Sher Afzal Khan Marwat has praised him for his neutral role and for being balanced.

Speaking to media in Islamabad, Marwat said that he had appeared before Yahya Afridi for more than 20 years, and he was an “extremely balanced judge”.

“I offer my congratulations to Yahya Afridi for the CJP role, and PTI was not opposed to his appointment as CJP,” he said.

“Our only issue was that the principle of seniority should not be violated in the appointment of the apex court’s top judge,” Marwat said while clarifying his party’s concerns over the appointment of the third senior-most judge as the CJP instead of senior-most Justice Mansoor Ali Shah.

Earlier in the day, Justice Yahya Afridi was sworn in as the new CJP following the retirement of Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Justice Afridi was nominated by a special parliamentary committee formed under the 26th Amendment.

The committee consisted of 12 members, including eight from the National Assembly and four from the Senate, who nominated Justice Afridi as the next CJP. After President Asif Ali Zardari’s assent, Yahya Afridi was officially appointed as the first CJP under new SC rules.

                            3. IND v NZ: India lose Test series at home after 12 years

New Zealand scored 259 runs in the first innings, in response to which the Indian team was reduced to 156 runs, while New Zealand scored 255 runs in the second innings and gave India a target of 359 runs to win.

In the first Test played in Bengaluru, India was defeated by eight wickets; in the first innings of this test match, the Indian team was reduced to 46 runs.

                            4. Netizens unhappy with remarks by outgoing CJP Qazi Faez Isa

Netizens unhappy with remarks by outgoing CJP Qazi Faez Isa

As the outgoing Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa visited the monuments of the Supreme Court on October 25, he was surrounded by a plethora of reporters when he remarked: “You should be thankful to live in a country where you can say these things.”

Netizens, however, are not happy with the former CJP’s statement, calling it “problematic and highly condemnable.” In a Reddit post, a user posted the link to journalist Matiullah Jan’s recent video in which the former CJP could be seen walking around outside the Supreme Court yesterday when he passed these remarks in answer to journalists’ constant questions.

“Why does a now former chief justice find a problem when journalists ask valid questions? What did he mean by that? Even on his last day as a judge, he passes thug comments. How deplorable!” wrote the user in its post.

Another Reddit user commented: “He could have retired with grace and dignity. He sold his soul to the highest bidder and will face the consequence of his own actions.”

While another user commented: “Matiullah does know “Warna Kiya”. He faced contempt of court by a three member SC bench for tweets criticizing judges during Faez Isa case no less. Faez Isa wasn’t as trigger happy to use contempt as previous judges were.”

It should be noted that Supreme Court judges have been surrounded by infighting and controversy, especially regarding the government’s successful passing of the 26th Amendment, which was aimed at judicial reforms.

For instance, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah refused to attend Friday’s full court reference in honour of the outgoing Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Qazi Faez Isa.

The senior puisne judge Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, in a letter of refusal on the record of the reference proceedings, alleged that CJP Isa had not upheld the integrity of the judiciary during his tenure.

Full court reference is a long-standing tradition in legal systems and a ceremonial acknowledgement of the outgoing Chief Justice’s contributions and services to the judiciary, leadership and dedication to upholding the judiciary integrity.

In the strongly critical letter, Shah wrote: “To stand a Reference and celebrate such a tenure would send a message that a Chief Justice can betray his institution, erode its strength, act petty and low and still be celebrated as an honorable servant of justice. I am sorry, I in good conscience, cannot stand at a reference for such a Chief Justice.”

Syed Mansoor Ali Shah added, “Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, like an ostrich, with his head in the sand, remained complacent and indifferent to external influences and pressure on the judiciary.”

“His tenure will be defined by pettiness, vindictiveness, and a lowly approach to administrative matters, having no grace or humility,” he said to Qazi Faez Isa while concluding in a letter.

On Thursday night, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Ayesha Malik, and Justice Shahid Waheed, along with Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, remained absent at the reception of Qazi Faez Isa.
