  • PTI’s Azam Swati shifted to Islamabad after court’s order that no cases should be registered against him

PTI’s Azam Swati shifted to Islamabad after court’s order that no cases should be registered against him

Senator Azam Swati — who has been in detention since November 27 over his controversial tweets about senior military officials— has been shifted to Islamabad and taken into police custody. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader was brought to the capital via a special plane from Sukkur.

On Thursday, Sindh Prosecutor General Faiz H Shah informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) of the development. During the hearing, the high court ordered that no cases should be registered against him.

A two-member SHC bench, comprising Justice KK Agha and Justice Arshad Hussain Khan, took up the plea.

The prosecutor general informed the bench at the hearing that Swati had been transferred to Islamabad and all cases registered against him in Sindh were being disposed of as C-Class, which means disposal of the case for being non-cognisable.

“Consequently, all FIRs will now become ineffective,” he said.

Speaking to the media after the hearing, Swati’s lawyer Anwar Mansoor Khan said that 34 cases were registered against his client in Sindh and all have now been categorised as “C class”.

Swati was initially booked by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Islamabad over a “highly obnoxious campaign of intimidating tweets against state institutions” and subsequently arrested by the agency.

Later, multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered against him in Sindh and Balochistan for using “derogatory language” and “provoking the people against the army”.

Earlier this month, PTI chairman Imran Khan slammed Quetta police’s decision to take Swati from Islamabad despite his health concerns.

  • Experts predict reduction in prices of petrol, diesel

Experts predict reduction in prices of petrol, diesel

According to oil price forecasts from energy experts, the price of petrol is likely to go down by Rs7.50 per litre, while the price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) may be reduced by Rs12.37 per litre for the rest of this month.

However, there won’t be a reduction in the price of petrol and high-speed diesel if the government increases the petroleum levy (PL) and corrects the backlog of exchange loss on a free-on-board (FOB) basis, according to Brecorder.

Sources said that the price of petrol is likely to go down by Rs7.50, from Rs224.80 to Rs217.30 per litre, while the price of HSD is expected to slide by Rs12.37, from Rs235.30 to Rs222.93 per litre.

The government is also poised to raise the tax on HSD, Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO), and Light Diesel Oil, according to sources in the Petroleum Division (LDO).

It is also possible that the exchange loss arrears in fuel prices would be adjusted.

There are lower prospects of the price of gasoline and HSD decreasing if the government raises the PL and corrects the exchange loss arrears. When petroleum goods reach the maximum level for PL, which is Rs50 per litre on each petroleum product, the government has promised the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that it will apply general sale tax (GST).

Currently, the government is charging a petroleum levy of Rs50 per litre on petrol, Rs25 per litre on HSD, Rs7.01 per litre on SKO and Rs15.39 per litre on LDO.

The government, however, has promised the international lender that it will hike the levy on diesel to Rs50 by April 2023.

  • Aanay waalay dinon mein koyi barra toofaan barpa ho sakta hai: Hamid Mir

Aanay waalay dinon mein koyi barra toofaan barpa ho sakta hai: Hamid Mir

Senior journalist Hamid Mir has warned that all is not well in Islamabad and a big storm may hit the corridors of power in the near future.

While speaking on Geo News’ programme Geo Pakistan, Mir said, “Maujooda haqoomti ittehaad mein sab kuch acha nahin hai aur Islamabad mein honay waali siyaasi garma garmi aanay waalay dinon mein koyi barra toofaan barpa kar sakti hai” (All is not well within the incumbent coalition government. The political heat in Islamabad could create a big storm in the coming days).

Mir said that if Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan dissolves the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab Assembly, then the heat in Islamabad can create a huge storm.

He was of the view that junior coalition parties could also force Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif’s government to hold general elections.

Separately, differences can also be seen within Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and his predecessor Miftah Ismail put forward their conflicting views on the state of Pakistan’s economy.

While Dar argued that the country’s performance criteria are up to the mark and “complete” for the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) ninth review, Ismail insisted that the default risk wouldn’t subside unless the Fund came to the table.

Mulk mein default ka khatra hai, says Miftah Ismail

Miftah Ismail said on Tuesday that there is still a threat of the country defaulting until the government completes the IMF ninth review. On the contrary, Dar said that he was not concerned whether the IMF team arrived or not for the ninth review, asserting that the IMF could “not dictate” the government.

Appearing on Geo News’ programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath”, Miftah rang alarm bells, stating that Pakistan is in jeopardy. “It has gone back in jeopardy and as long as IMF is not back on the table, the threat of default will remain high,” he emphasised.

Moreover, he believed that the path Pakistan is on might take the country toward default urging the incumbent government to take steps to prevent that from happening.

On the show, the former minister blamed Khan for the ongoing economic crisis. He said, “Khan is responsible for pushing Pakistan towards default; he is the one who broke his promise with the IMF; Khan is the one who wanted to derail the IMF programme when we tried to revive it under PM Shehbaz Sharif’s leadership.”

When asked that the incumbent finance minister Ishaq Dar has said several times that IMF is being unreasonable, Miftah responded that first we need to take a good look at ourselves.

“When the IMF gives you a loan, this means they are helping you out. We need to look at ourselves, why did we go to the IMF previously. Dealing with the IMF is not an easy task,” Miftah said. He reiterated that if the IMF didn’t come to the table, “It will be very difficult to save Pakistan from a default”.

He stressed that the country needed to take action on certain matters to bring the IMF mission to Pakistan, saying that funds from neighbouring countries could only last the country for weeks.

Earlier this month, Pakistan ended its immediate default risk when the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) made a payment of $1 billion for sukuk bond.

The Nanbai Association in Punjab’s capital city has hinted at increasing the price of naan and roti in the city, calling a meeting to determine the price.

The prices of Roti and Naan are expected to increase by Rs2 to Rs3.

According to details, Aftab Gul, the President of the Association, has said that the increase in the price of roti and naan has been proposed because of the increase in price of wheat in the market. In addition, he said that non-availability of gas, wood and expensive LPG are among reasons behind the expected increase.

Aftab Gul also said that the price of a 15 kg bag of wheat has increased from Rs1400 to Rs1775, while a bag of fine flour has increased from Rs8500 to Rs9500.

Imran Khan to give date for dissolution of assemblies before December 20: Reports

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in a consultative session with lawmakers from Bhakkar, Mianwali, Pakpattan and Sahiwal told them that the provincial assemblies being governed by his party will be dissolved this very month and the date of the dissolution will be made public prior to December 20.

The PTI earlier gave a deadline of December 20 to the federal coalition government of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to announce a date for general elections, otherwise, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab assemblies will be dissolved.

In reply, the ruling coalition has told the PTI chairman to dissolve the assemblies.

According to the media reports, Khan said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Qauid (PML-Q) is on the same page with the PTI on the issue of Punjab assembly’s dissolution.

“The PML-Q is a vital ally. We have intimated them of our decision,” Imran Khan said.

“Our politics is not above the country. This government has destroyed the national economy,” he maintained.

Earlier, Senior Vice-President of PTI, Fawad Chaudhry, addressing the ruling coalition said, “Leaders of the imported government don’t want polls and they have no idea how to run the country.”

“If PDM doesn’t bring a formula for holding general elections by December 20, the Punjab and KP assemblies will be dissolved,” Fawad said.
