Lyari River to be cleaned up with help of public, private orgs: Sherry

Federal Climate Change Minister Senator Sherry Rehman on Wednesday announced the launch of a Lyari River clean-up drive in collaboration with public and private organisations.

She made the announcement while speaking at a round table discussion that was organised by Coca-Cola Pakistan in collaboration with the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), ministries of maritime affairs and climate change.

Held in continuation of the World Water Week, the theme of #SeeingTheUnseen, the roundtable session was chaired by Senator Sherry Rehman, with Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari, attending as a guest of honour and led by S.M Tariq Huda, Chairman of the Karachi Port Trust All these people represented apex bodies most impacted by the report that revealed catastrophic levels of waste accumulation over the last 20 years, of which less than 2 per cent is removed.

Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman, who formed a committee to lead the Lyari Cleanup Project, said, “Pakistan has been identified as the most vulnerable to climate change as we clearly see from the present floods the country is facing. Broad-based partnerships are going to play a crucial role in ensuring that we develop solutions that can be scaled up by the use of technology.

Fahad Ashraf, Vice President, The Coca-Cola Company, Pakistan said, “We have always known that the communities in Karachi’s harbour area are adversely impacted by poor waste management, but this is not a responsibility that falls on just one single entity because the quantum of the problem is too large. This is a call to anyone who cares about Pakistan’s water security to step in.”

Moderated by public policy expert, Mosharraf Zaidi, this event aimed to co-create solutions that can be used to scale up sustainable interventions, emphasising on local and international expertise. In attendance were representatives of the global NGO, The Ocean Cleanup, WWF-Pakistan, Unilever, Nestlé, Engro, the packaging alliance CORE, SEED Ventures, Indus Earth Trust and the National Institute of Oceanography, to name a few.
As part of The Ocean Cleanup and Coca-Cola’s global partnership to stem the tide of plastic waste by intercepting it in rivers around the world, they are looking to build a coalition that explores solutions to clean the Lyari harbour area.

Mr Tariq Huda, Chairman of Karachi Port Trust, a partner in making the project a reality, said “This port connects Pakistan’s northern provinces and the overall Pakistan economy to the world, and water security, therefore, is a national security issue that we must neither deny nor delay solving.”
The Environmental Scoping Study reveals that the Lyari harbour area, which was meant to be a spillway to control the flow of flood water, is now choked by accumulated debris. Every month, 9,000 tonnes of debris enter this river, almost entirely unclean.

With about 33 million people nationwide impacted by the floods and an impending food security issue, this timely report calls for urgent and substantive action in densely populated cities like Karachi that are at a perpetual threat to urban flooding.

The women even told him that after that, her relationship with her husband had turned soar and they were not talking to each other.

Thus, she attempted to convince Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar to have belief in her and also told that if he agreed, she would send him her picture showing that she was ready to step outside of her house to meet him but the writer scolded her and even used explicit words.

Qamar has married twice – initially to Rubi Naz and later to Rozina Qureshi.

Recently actress Resham shared her stance on Khalil-ur-Rehman and Mahira Khan’s controversy on Tabish Hashmi’s show Hasna Mana Hai.

On being asked by the host about her opinion on the writer, Resham said that he is talented when it comes to story telling, however his comments about top actress Mahira Khan are derogatory.

“He said that he regrets signing Mahira for Sadqay Tumhare, but who is he to sign her?,” she asked.

It is the producer or the channel’s call to hire an actor and that too of Mahira’s stature. Khalil is just the writer and doesn’t hold the autonomy on over the project’s casting.

The Naagin star also said that that Qamar likes to connect his name to established stars particularly females to get clout on media.

Previously Resham took to her Instagram handle to write a scathing comment for Qamar after the latter commented on the Masjid-e-Nabvi incident involving PMLN leaders.

The Jeeva star said that Khalil has gone mad and he needs to admitted to a mental hospital before he starts biting everyone with his poisonous teeth.

Writer-Director Khalil-ur-Rehman recently took to his twitter handle to share his take on the Masjid e Nabvi incident involving PML-N.

He asked that when was this ordered that we can’t term a thief as one at the holy place?

  • Imran Khan expresses ‘deep regret’ over threatening female judge, dodges unconditional apology

Imran Khan expresses ‘deep regret’ over threatening female judge, dodges unconditional apology

Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, expressed “deep regret” over his “unintentional utterances” in an additional reply in response to the show-cause notice issued to him by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for threatening a judge Zeba Chaudhary during a rally in Islamabad on August 20.

However, the submitted reply fell short of offering an unconditional apology.

IHC on August 31 had directed the former Prime Minister to resubmit his response, giving him seven days to hand in the new draft.

During the proceedings, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah had said he was “disappointed” by the written response submitted by Khan. He asked him to review it and submit it once more.

In a 19-page-long document, Khan told the court that it should discharge the notice based on his explanation and follow the Islamic principles of forgiveness.

“That the purpose of the contempt law is not to punish anyone but to uphold the majesty of law. The respondent [Khan] believes in the rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution,” the response said.

“The respondent takes this opportunity to express his deep regrets over his unintentional utterances during the course of his speech at a rally which was taken out in response to the shocking news of the physical torture of Shahbaz Gill.”

PTI’s Chief of Staff, Shahbaz Gill, has been under arrest since August 9 for allegedly inciting mutiny within the Pakistan army. Gill has alleged that he was tortured while in custody.

In his resubmitted reply, Khan said that the utterances were “unintentional” and not meant to be directed towards the female judge for whom he has “a lot of respect”.

Khan said that he never meant to hurt her feelings and if her feelings have been hurt, it is deeply regretted.

“The respondent neither meant to threaten the lady judge nor could he think of doing so. The respondent has respect for the judiciary including the Subordinate judiciary and he believes that judges of the Subordinate/ District judiciary should be strong and independent in order to dispense justice to the common man,” the response added.

In the end, the PTI chairman appealed to the court to discharge the contempt notice issued to him.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, distancing from party Chairman Imran Khan’s anti-establishment remarks has said that he hasn’t seen or heard Khan’s controversial remarks.

“Mainay bayaan ko suna nahi hai, mainay dekha nahi hai. Main apsay sun raha hon. [I have not heard or seen his comments. I am listening to them from you]. Once I know the background of the story I will be able to comment on this,” he said on a news show. The remark earned him a few smiles from the program host.

“However, I know he [Imran Khan] knows the importance of this institution. He has always protected this institution as well,” he added.

Khan on September 4, alleged that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and Zardari wanted to appoint their favourite as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) because if a “strong and patriotic army chief” was appointed, they would be questioned about their corruption.

Earlier today, Khan has said that he has had enough of the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) “cabal of crooks” who are trying to launch propaganda against him.

In a tweet, the PTI chairman said, “Am following intense propaganda launched by PDM cabal of crooks against me.This stems from their being petrified of PTI’s soaring popularity.”

“Today in Peshawar jalsa I will give proper reply to all those who have deliberately been distorting my words to malign me. Enough is enough,” said Khan.

President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi has also said that the chairman of his party, Khan “apne bayaan ki khud wazahat karey ke in ka kya maqsad tha”. (Imran Khan should himself clarify what he meant.)

LGBT activists allegedly sentenced to death in Iran on accusation of promoting homosexuality

A court in Iran sentenced two LGBTQ rights activists to death on allegations of encouraging homosexuality.

According to the Hengaw Kurdish rights organisation, the two women, Zahra Sedighi Hamedani, 31, and Elham Chubdar, 24, were sentenced to death by a court in the northwestern town of Urmia.

They were convicted of “spreading corruption on earth.” This accusation is routinely levied on individuals who are found to have violated the country’s sharia regulations.

They were also charged with preaching Christianity and communicating with international media.

Iran’s judiciary has confirmed the sentences but said they were connected to human trafficking and not with LGBT activism.

“Contrary to the news published in cyberspace and the rumours that have been spread, these two individuals have been accused of deceiving women and young girls and trafficking them to one of the countries of the region,” the judiciary’s news outlet Mizan reported.

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and same-sex intimacy for both men and women is officially criminalised in the penal code.

“We had predicted 25 percent more rainfall this year but it turned out to be 190 percent higher. We saw glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) as well,” he explained.
Ahsan Iqbal, while talking to the media said, “Pakistan’s carbon emission is less than 1 per cent however, we are among the countries that are most vulnerable to the climatic disasters.

“The scale of the floods warrants a major humanitarian response for which the support of the international community has started pouring in and we are extremely grateful. However, the scale of devastation is massive and requires a large humanitarian response,” he remarked.

“The floods are a lesson for Pakistan as it proves that buildings should be constructed on waterways,” he added.
