Shehbaz govt has no right to appoint new army chief’, Fawad Chaudhry

Former federal Law Minister Fawad Chaudhry has said that the constitution gives the right to the elected Prime Minister to appoint the Army Chief. He said that such important appointments will create anarchy in the country if done by an imported government, which is just temporary and not permanent. “The present government has no right to make such important appointments.”

Fawad’s tweet came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a meeting with journalists said that appointment of Army chief will be done constitutionally at the right time.

PPP Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar while responding to Fawad’s tweet wrote, “Making the appointment of a new Army Chief controversial is an irresponsible attempt by your party to push this country towards anarchy. This statement of yours in the lust for power is a conspiracy to create divisions in the army.”

Khokhar added: “We have the examples of Iraq and Libya in front of us. Disagree with the military, of course, but it is a national institution.”

General Qamar Javed Bajwa is due to retire as Chief of Army Staff on November 29, 2022 after a three-year extension. He was appointed as the army chief by the then prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, in 2016.

  • Elon Musk buys Twitter, Donald Trump has no plans to join the platform again

Former United States (US) President, Donald Trump has announced that he has no intention to rejoin Twitter following the agreement with Elon Musk to buy the social media platform.

While talking to Fox News on Monday, Trump revealed that he is satisfied with his own platform, Truth Social which was launched earlier this year.

He said, “I am not going on Twitter. I am going to stay on Truth,” Trump was quoted telling the network. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on Truth.”

Trump’s account was suspended after he incited violence on January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack through the social media platform. He had about 89 million followers on Twitter at that time.

Trump has sued Twitter, Facebook, and Google’s YouTube against censoring his posts while posts by conservative commentators are widely shared on social media.

In an interview, he said that he welcomed Elon Musk’s decision to buy Twitter, but he want to focus on his own platform. He did not see Twitter as his competitor.

He said, “Truth Social will be a voice for me,” he said. “And that’s something nobody else can get.”

Elon Musk is the world’s richest person and advocates free speech on all platforms. He had said before that he wanted to purchase Twitter and privatize it to allow free speech on the platform. He proposed some changes to the platform, including relaxing restrictions on content. Yesterday, he closed the purchase agreement for $44billion with the company.

  • Pakistan’s energy crisis worsens, resulting in ten hours of load shedding

Pakistan’s energy crisis worsens, resulting in ten hours of load shedding

Due to higher demand and reduced generation caused by fuel shortages, and reduced gas supplies to power plants, Pakistan is experiencing 6-10 hours of electricity load-shedding in various areas.

As of April 25, generation was 17,976 MW, compared to demand of almost 21,000 MW, indicating a significant discrepancy between demand and generation. IPPs contributed 14,536 MW, Gencos contributed 837 MW, and Wapda hydel contributed 2,603 MW.

LNG-powered facilities are only receiving 500 MMCFD RLNG against a demand of 690 MMCFD, forcing the system operator, the National Power Control Centre (NPCC), to run furnace oil-fired facilities, which are much more expensive to run than natural gas and RLNG. Due to a lack of gas, Nandipur is working, however, Bhikki is not operating at full capacity.

Prime Minister (PM) Shahbaz Sharif and former Minister of Energy Hammad Azhar exchanged accusing remarks on Twitter.

“Mian Nawaz Sharif’s government halted the worst load-shedding in five years,” the Prime Minister declared in a tweet. The PTI administration failed to procure fuel on schedule or fix power plants. As a result, present load shedding is in effect. Power generation costs the population Rs100 billion per month due to inefficient plants. “We’re working on it”.

Former Energy Minister Hammad Azhar responded to Prime Minister, claiming that “there are only 5 power plants under repair, the most of them are in the private sector”.

Two PML-N LNG contracts defaulted in the recent two weeks, resulting in a fuel deficit and prompt system gas diversions. This is a textbook case of poor management that could have been averted.

“Oh isn’t she that friend of Imran I cast as the phuppo (aunt) in my film Janaan?”

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday sought reply from National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday (tomorrow) on a plea from Maryam Nawaz, seeking permission to travel abroad for performing Umrah.

According to ARY News, Justice Baqar Najafi, heading the LHC division bench, asked as to in which case name of Maryam Nawaz was added to no-fly list.

To this, the NAB prosecutor said that her name was added to no-fly list after the LHC approved her bail plea. An appeal was filed against the bail plea, however, it has yet to be fixed for hearing, he said, adding NAB has filed petition to cancel bail of Maryam Nawaz.

Marium on April 21, filed a plea before the Lahore High Court (LHC) so that she can travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah in Ramzan. She has also said that she wants to travel to London to visit her ailing father, Mian Nawaz Sharif.

“I want to go to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah but cannot because my passport is surrendered at the LHC,” reads the plea.

Maryam Nawaz said in her plea that she was arrested by NAB in 2019 in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case and later the LHC approved her bail plea and in return, she submitted her passport to the court.

The division bench of the LHC comprising Justice Shahbaz Ali Rizvi and Justice Anwar-ul-Haq rescued themselves from the proceedings of the plea hearing today and asked Chief Justice LHC to fix the hearing before the bench that previously heard the matter, reports ARY News.

“The bench that granted bail to the petitioner should listen to the case,” the bench remarked after Advocate Ahsan Bhoon pleaded the case on behalf of Maryam Nawaz.

Nawaz free to fly back to Pakistan, name removed from ECL

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will go on his first foreign trip to Saudi Arabia on April 27. He will be accompanied by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

PM Shehbaz will call upon Saudi Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. The Pakistani delegation will also perform Umrah during the trip, reports The News.

Member National Assembly Mohsin Dawar was supposed to accompany PM Sharif on his trip to Saudi but will most likely miss the trip as his name is on the Exit Control List (ECL). For being in the ‘anti-state category’, the names of Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir were not removed from the ECL as per the new policy.

The new government removed the names of PM Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister-elect Hamza Shehbaz, PML-N head Mian Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz from the Exit Control List (ECL) under a new policy, reported Azaz Syed for Geo News.

Senior anchorperson Saleem Safi asked federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar why Dawar’s name has not been removed from the ECL when the Sharif family removed their own names. Tarar said that it is due to two categories of cases: one that deals with anti-terrorism, anti-state cases and narcotics while the other category is banking offences, misuse of authority, loans, etc. He added that now they will have to amend the Act and also take rules to the cabinet again.

“I believe that when someone is an elected member of parliament and represents millions of people, there should be no travel ban for him/her. As a firm believer in human rights, I think this law is wrong and only should be applicable on extreme cases. But nobody should be placed on ECP indefinitely,” said Law Minister Azam Tarar.
