    ‘Special time for our family’: Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas become parents to a baby girl

    Celebrity couple of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have welcomed a baby through surrogacy. The Baywatch diva announced the news on her official Instagram handle.

    “We are overjoyed to confirm we have welcomed a baby via surrogate,” the posy read. “We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family.”

    As per Daily Mail they have welcomed a daughter 12 weeks early. “The baby girl, who was born via surrogate, arrived at 27 weeks at a Southern California hospital outside LA, where she’ll remain until she is healthy enough to return home with her parents, a source close to the couple said,’ read the news report.

    In November, 2021, during her roast, Priyanka spoke about having kids with Nick and said that they are the only couple who do not have any kids. Nick’s brothers Kevin Jonas has two daughters, and Joe Jonas also shares a daughter with his wife Sophie Turner.

    Chopra and Nick tied the knot in Rajasthan in 2018.

    Judicial history made, Justice Ayesha officially elevated to Supreme Court

    President Arif Alvi on Friday gave final approval to the elevation of Lahore High Court Justice Ayesha Malik as a judge of the Supreme Court (SC).

    Justice Ayesha will make history as the first female Supreme Court judge in the judicial history of Pakistan. She will be sworn into office on Monday, January 24, and her tenure will begin immediately. Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmad will administer the oath to Malik.

    Her oath-taking ceremony will be held at the Supreme Court. Judges of the Supreme Court, the attorney-general of Pakistan, and the advocate general will be in attendance.

    The Judicial Commission of Pakistan had on January 7 approved the elevation with a vote of five for and four against after a heated discussion on whether judges should be appointed based on merit or seniority.

    It is pertinent to mention here that Justice Ayesha Malik is ranked fourth in the Lahore High Court in terms of seniority.

    Justice Ayesha Malik’s name came to fame after her landmark judgment against the ‘two-finger test’ or two-finger virginity test of sexual assault survivors.

    Pindi woman sentenced to death for blasphemous Whatsapp status

    A 26-year-old Muslim woman in Rawalpindi has been sentenced to death for posting blasphemous material on her WhatsApp status, reports Dawn.

    The court ordered that the woman must be “hanged by her neck till she is dead”. She was also given a 20-year jail sentence and a fine of approximately Rs200,000.

    She was arrested in May 2020 on the complaint of Muhammad Hasnat Farooq in the FIA (Federal Investigation Agency) Cyber Crime Wing.

    According to the United States (US) Commission on International Religious Freedom, up to 80 people are jailed in Pakistan on charges of blasphemy.

    In December, a Sri Lankan factory manager working in Sialkot was beaten to death and later burnt by a mob in broad light after being accused of blasphemy.

    In a pre-Pakistan Super League (PSL 7) media conference, Lahore Qalandars’ newly appointed captain Afridi was asked whether he would like to do the captaincy of the Pakistan team in the future.

    “I don’t have any plans for now as Babar is leading the side so well. Under his captaincy, the team gelled strongly and performed. I wish he continues as captain for at least 10-15 years,” he responded.

    “In the future, if any opportunity comes to me, I would love to do it for my country. But, for now, I want Babar to continue for long,” he added.

    It must be noted here that Shaheen and Babar will be leading their respective franchises Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings for the first time in PSL 7.

    Court allows PML-N’s Khawaja Asif to cross-examine PM Khan

    The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has allowed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Khawaja Asif to cross-examine Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan with reference to the premier’s defamation case against him.

    During the hearing, headed by IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah, the civil court directed to conclude the proceedings within two months, states Dawn.

    Barrister Haider Rasool, the counsel for Asif argued that since 2012 his client had sought adjournment 28 times while the court adjourned the proceedings on PM’s request on nearly 50 occasions.

    The court observed that it was the defendant’s [Khawaja] right to cross-examine the PM.

    Earlier this year, the high court had sought a reply from the premier.

    Back in 2012, the premier had filed the defamation suit against Asif for recovery of Rs10 billion as the latter at a press conference levelled allegations about misappropriation of funds and money laundering through the Shaukat Khanam funds.

    Junaid Safdar tied the knot Last year in August. The wedding festivities of the couple took place in December 2021.

    Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Thursday, lashing out at the Opposition, said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) are known for “using unfair tactics” to influence courts.

    While referring to the affidavit case of the former chief judge of Gilgit-Baltistan Rana Shamim, the prime minister said the PML-N generated the controversy of the affidavit to pressurise the court which was hearing the case of its leaders Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.

    “They [PML-N leaders] are mafias and they always influence courts when they feel that they are about to decide their cases,” said the premier.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Faisal Javed informed the media that PM Khan had said that the Sharif family had again been exposed for trying to pressure the judiciary, reports The Express Tribune.

    “The PML-N has pressured courts in the past as well for making decisions in its favour. Everyone knows that the PML-N has a history of pressuring the judiciary” the senator quoted the prime minister as saying.

    “The Sharif family is fighting for its survival while we [PTI] are fighting the nation’s war,” said Javed.

    Talking to a group of spokespersons, the premier urged his spokespersons to vehemently counter “controversies” being created by Opposition leaders, especially in the media, reports Dawn.

    Pakistan has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began. As per the National Command and Operating Center (NCOC), the country recorded 7678 new cases of the deadly virus. The positivity rate has increased to 12.93 per cent.

    Moreover, 23 people lost their lives and 961 patients are in critical condition.

    The total number of cases has risen to 1,353,479 and the death toll is 29,065.
