  • Russia’s Medvedev wins maiden Grand Slam, beats Djokovic in US Open final

Russia’s Medvedev wins maiden Grand Slam, beats Djokovic in US Open final

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has won his maiden Grand Slam, beating Djokovic with straight three sets (6-4 6-4 6-4) at the US Open final.

Novak Djokovic’s bid for a record 21st major title that would have completed the calendar-year Grand Slam collapsed at the final hurdle as Medvedev, playing in his third major final, at last hoisted a Grand Slam trophy while avenging a straight sets defeat by Djokovic earlier this year in the Australian Open final.

The Serb was trying to become the first man in over a half-century to win all four majors (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open) in the same year.

Such was Medvedev’s domination that the only tiny bit of drama came late when the Serb was suddenly hit by a bout of nerves.

The New York crowd had never really embraced Djokovic the way it wrapped its arms around Swiss Roger Federer and Spain’s Rafael Nadal, who have also won 20 Grand Slam titles.

It had also shown no real love for Medvedev. But no amount of urging could lift Djokovic’s game.

While an extraordinary women’s final on Saturday between teenagers Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez had softened the spotlight’s glare in which the British player clinched her maiden win for the country after 44 years. The women’s final was the first Grand Slam to feature two unseeded players.

  • ‘Pakistan Zindabad’, Shaan calls out ex-Indian army officer for spreading fake news

‘Pakistan Zindabad’, Shaan calls out ex-Indian army officer for spreading fake news

Pakistani actor Shaan Shahid reacted to a viral picture from his movie ‘Yalghaar’ after an ex-Indian army officer tweeted a photo of Pakistani actors, falsely claiming that they were Pakistani soldiers who had been martyred in Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan. Apart from Shaan, others actors in the picture include Umair Jaswal and Bilal Ashraf.

Shaan responded to the tweet by sharing his movie poster and said, “Hello from the other side. Pakistan Zindabaad!”

Umair Jaswal also made fun of the picture. He tweeted, “Hello dear! From Pakistan.”

The confusion started after a former Indian army officer, Maj Gen GD Bakshi, claimed on Twitter that the Pakistan Army had suffered heavy casualties in Panjshir Valley.

A Twitter user mocked Bakshi by sharing a picture from the set of Pakistani movie ‘Yalghaar’ and wrote: “My class fellow from school days Maj Aijaj 2nd from left and Capt Jufar 1st from left embraced martyrdom in Panjshir. They were buried yesterday in Peshawar. ISPR is trying to hide these casualties. They fought bravely and should be honoured as such. This is injustice by Pak Army.”

Following the false claim, an Indian general Lt Gen H S Panag(R) criticised his own general.

Earlier, an Afghan journalist mistook Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Aamir Liaquat as a martyred soldier in Afghanistan.

Indian news channels, Republic TV, and Zee Hindustan ran visuals from a video game — Arma-3 — stating that it was the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) attacking the anti-Taliban fighters.

Then a Twitter user shared a picture of a fighter jet, claiming that a PAF plane was shot down in Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley. Later, a fact-check by Dawn showed that the picture is actually from 2018 in the United States.

Bakshi, who has had a long career in the Indian army, is known for spreading fake news. An article by Indian publication The Print last year referred to him as the “shrillest warmonger in the media”, as per Dawn.

  • Pakistan judiciary’s missed moment

September 9, 2021, could have been a historic day for Pakistan had Justice Ayesha Malik of the Lahore High Court (LHC) been elevated to the Supreme Court (SC). Unfortunately, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) could not elevate the first woman judge to the country’s highest court due to an equal split in voting with four votes in her favour and four against her elevation. An elevation requires a majority vote by JCP members. Justice Qazi Faez Isa, who is also part of the JCP, could not attend the meeting as he was out of the country for his wife’s medical treatment. He could have voted in writing or through a video link.

According to the Human Rights Watch (HRW), Pakistan is the only nation in South Asia to have never had a female Supreme Court judge. HRW also says that only about four percent of Pakistan’s High Court judges are women. “Of the 3,005 Pakistani judges in the lower and higher courts, only 519 – or 17 percent – are women.”

It just shows how — like other professions in the country — the legal fraternity, too, suffers from gender imbalance and gender inequality. It is unfortunate that an institution that has to dispense justice to society is bereft of doing justice to the women in the legal fraternity. If a woman judge cannot make it to our top court, how are we to expect a just system for women who face extensive abuse in the country? When there is so much sexism in the country, so much misogyny all around us, a woman making it to our top court would have given us some confidence in our systems, in our institutions. It is a sad reflection of our society that when it comes to equal participation of women in courts, men get to decide their fate. Not one single member of the JCP is a woman. The decision-making for such high offices is left in the hands of a few men.

Some in the legal fraternity say that the process of judges’ appointments is problematic and should be more transparent instead of a pick and choose a principle that is being applied at the moment. We hope that the judiciary and bars and the legal fraternity will address these issues, resolve them and also make sure that women are equally represented in Bars as well as the judiciary. And we hope that Justice Ayesha Malik will be nominated again to the apex court. It is the 21st century and our judiciary should not be seen as a boy’s club. More power to Justice Ayesha Malik!
