Court orders Shah Abdul Latif University to take law colleges exams delayed since three years

The Sindh High Court’s Sukkur bench on Tuesday ordered the Shah Abdul Latif University to hold the law college exams in phases.

As per reports, the petition was filed by law students pleading that the university has not taken their examinations for the last three years.

The Registrar of Shah Abdul Latif University was present in the court today.

“Why the exams have not held for the last three years,” Justice Aftab Ahmed Gorar asked the Registrar. “The papers were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic,” the university’s official replied.

“The pandemic situation exists for one year but the papers have not been taken for the last three years,” the Justice remarked.

“You have put the future of hundreds of students at stake,” Justice Gorar added.

“The university should arrange exams twice or thrice in a year to complete the students degree course within five years,” the bench ruled.

The court also asked the university officials to prepare and submit the exams schedule to the court within two hours.

In the last hearing, the court issued arrest warrants of the university’s registrar officer and ordered his presence in court for ignoring the court orders.

The students’ counsel in the previous hearing said that in spite of strict orders, the registrar did not come to the court.

  • EXCLUSIVE: ‘I did the speech knowing I would lose my job,’ Hamid Mir

EXCLUSIVE: ‘I did the speech knowing I would lose my job,’ Hamid Mir

Hamid Mir doesn’t sound like he’s down. On the contrary, the seasoned journalist sounds energised and alive. His phone was dead (or switched off) for the past two days, when The Current tried to reach out to him. Eventually when we got through, he didn’t pause for a second and gave us his version of the event that led to his removal from his flagship show, ‘Capital Talk’ on Geo News.

“What will Geo probe?” he said when asked that Geo News had stated that they would “check for violation of policy and law” in a speech given by Hamid Mir “that resulted in backlash from different segments of society”.

“My speech did not air on Geo News, it was not published in the newspaper,” Mir said categorically, “so how is Geo responsible when it never appeared on their television screens?”

But Mir does admit that the pressure is intense on the management of his channel, which ultimately falls on him. “I am always prepared for pressure,” he says calmly, “I offered to leave the channel on Friday night when I was asked to clarify my statement. I told the management that when I never spoke on your channel, why do I need to issue a clarification? I was then told not to tweet on the issue and also that I should not take part in any other programmes,” Mir explained. “I was going to go on different news channels and said that I am not going to discuss my speech but to discuss the media ordinance. I was asked not to do so and therefore, I didn’t. I did tell them [management] that ‘they’ will ask you to remove me from the programme in a day or so and that’s exactly what happened.”

When asked what it was about this particular case that drove Mir to give the speech, he said it was because of a man in a wheelchair.

“When I was about to speak, if you notice in the video, there is a man on my right side sitting on a wheelchair. The man is an old journalist Qaiser Butt and he randomly said, ‘Larki ka bhai ho sakta hai‘ (it can be the girl’s brother) implying that Toor was part of an illicit relationship. That made me angry since Asad was standing right there as well. I got de-tracked and said, ‘larki ki maa bhi ho sakti hai jo General Rani hai‘. But it’s not just that.”

Mir says the biggest reason for speaking out had been building up for the past three weeks. “In the past two, three weeks, some female colleagues were complaining that they were being threatened and one told me that ‘they’ came to her house. They didn’t cause her any harm but gave her a message.” He added that two female journalists also wanted to file a case but they have restrictions that are different. “Their husbands tell them not to report the cases; they face problems with their in-laws.”

Mir is hopeful for change this time. “I did the speech knowing I would lose my job and I was prepared for that,” he says. “Right now, as I am speaking with you, I am at a meeting with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP). Hina Jilani is also here and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) is going to be releasing a white paper on the new cases that have come up. I can’t tell you, I have been swamped with calls of people that are now finally coming forward with cases and want to raise their voice.”

“Lots of people are taken off air, but there has never been such a big reaction,” Mir says, explaining that in this particular case, the local and international reaction is bigger than he expected. “I am getting a lot of calls from international networks wanting to cover the story and because of this interest, I believe that some pressure will be put on the political government for accountability.”

“Lots of ministers are messaging me in private, lending their support,” Mir said. “Perhaps this time, we might see some actual change.”

Hamid Mir was taken off air on Monday.

Lose your weight turns into losing your wife

    What is the fuss about?

A 28-year-old man from Karachi got divorced as his wife claimed that he was not the person she got married to.

Mr Cheema, a resident of Karachi, was working in a multinational company. He has been recently transferred to his company’s office in Lahore for a three-month project.

He weighed almost 135 kgs and wanted to surprise his wife on his return to Karachi with a massive bodyweight loss.

He subscribed to a low carb meal plan from an international health meal chain in Lahore, called On the Go by AK (OTG).

His dedication to avoid Lahori food and strictly follow his diet plan transformed his body.

As a man with a better physique and appearance, he was ready to surprise his wife after three months. But to his surprise, he was not allowed to enter the house. His wife failed to recognise him and said: “This is not the man who married me.” A huge drama was created and everyone in the neighbourhood also witnessed it.

The residents reported that the husband took the insulting remarks from his wife personally, and his aggression escalated beyond control. The fight led to a divorce.

Mr Cheema filed a lawsuit against On the go by AK (OTG) as he held the company responsible for his divorce.

A representative from OTG has discredited the information of a lawsuit, claiming no such action was taken by their client.

OTG claimed that the client was provided with a healthy weight loss diet to lose weight for which they have been successful. Losing 40 kgs in three months was the highest weight loss by a client in such time, OTG mentioned.

Celebrities and the meme community have urged followers to subscribe to a meal plan from OTG as a protest against such people in society.

Many A-listers influencers use our High-end meal plans to stay in shape but never have we seen such drama in the past.

A man from India’s Tamil Nadu ate a dead snake to “protect” himself from contracting the COVID-19.

The  50-year-old Vadivel was arrested and charged with a fine of Rs 7,000 after he posted a video of him eating a poisonous snake on social media.

He claimed that snakes are good antidotes to Covid-19 and keep the deadly virus at bay.

As per reports, the man caught the reptile in a field and killed it before eating it.

A forest officer in Madurai district said the agriculture worker had been prompted to eat the snake by other people. He had been drunk at the time of the incident.

Fortunately, the man didn’t bite into the venom glands of the snake, identified as a common krait, a species of highly venomous reptiles native to the Indian subcontinent.

Its venom consists of powerful neurotoxins that can even be fatal for humans if not treated. The reptile had been found dead in a drain, the forest officer said.

  • ‘PPP and ANP have left PDM’: Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

‘PPP and ANP have left PDM’: Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

General Secretary of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) have left PDM. “Now their paths are separate.”

“There are eight parties in PDM and they will continue to do their work. The doors of PDM are open for every party that will follow the manifesto and decisions of PDM,” added Abbasi.

Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that leaders of the fragmented anti-government alliance appear to be “confused and divided”.

Bilawal further added that PPP was not part of the meeting held on Saturday, yet PDM is still following the manifesto that was presented by the PPP when PDM was formed.

“We can have positive feelings for each other and wish everybody good luck. Everybody has the right to do Opposition politics in accordance to their own manifesto and ideology,” said the PPP chairman.

He made these remarks while addressing a press conference with ANP leaders in Charsadda on Sunday.

PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday said that the PPP and ANP were not discussed in the PDM meeting, as they are not part of the alliance.

“They [PPP] can still contact the PDM leadership and apprise them about their intentions. But it is not something that we will waste time over anymore during PDM meetings,” said Maulana Fazl.
