‘Forget Nawaz-Zardari; what is your govt doing?’ Shahid Afridi lashes out at PM Khan

Cricket legend Shahid Afridi believes that Prime Minister Imran Khan is ‘stuck in the system.’

Talking to The Current, Shahid Afridi said that the government should focus on its own performance rather than focusing on what past governments did or did not do.

“Why is the Prime Minister always saying he will not give anyone an NRO. If the state institutions and judiciary are independent, let them do their work.” Afridi added that the government needs to show what it has done so far instead of just targeting Opposition leaders.

Afridi made this comment in an interview on Samaa TV show, ‘Sawal’, saying that when PM Khan used to speak before becoming the Prime Minister, the entire nation would stand up in favour of Khan, but now all he does is give explanations.

Advising the PM, he said that the premier should now leave Zardari and Nawaz Sharif. Since the past two and a half years only talks about them where ever he goes.

He stressed that Khan should become the change for which people voted for him in 2013 and 2018.

Gaza’s largest bookshop destroyed by Israeli airstrikes

Gaza’s largest bookstore was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike on Tuesday. Established in 2008, the shop housed thousands of books, including the largest collection of English literature in Gaza, and was also part of a publishing house that focused on Palestinian writers.

Defending the attack, the Israeli military claimed that the strike was intended to destroy Hamas tunnels.

The two-story bookshop was built 21 years ago and was one of the Gaza Strip’s largest sellers of books for children, students, academics and anyone else who loved to read. He also printed books and published stories written by local authors.

“The books may be under rubble but that will not stop us,” writer Nada Abu Mideen told The National. “We will keep writing to show the world that we deserve life.”

A GoFundMe has also been set up to help rebuild the store.

This wasn’t the only bookstore that was destroyed in Gaza this week. Others, including the Iqraa library, were also either completely or partially destroyed.

Bookstore owner Shaban Aslim can be seen holding back tears as he is interviewed in front of the rubble.

“The bookstore was like my soul,” said Mansour, 53, who was born in the Gaza Strip and said that he had built this bookstore by starving himself.

CM Buzdar to meet JKT group today

Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar will meet members of the Jahangir Khan Tareen (JKT) group today to hear their grievances.

Talking to the media, Punjab MPA and JKT group member Nazir Chohan said they would meet the chief minister and tell him about his “faults”.

“The purpose of our meeting is the betterment of the province. Punjab’s affairs are being run by the bureaucracy.” Chohan added that while the MPAs have elected Buzdar as the chief minister, he did not get them elected.

Earlier, PTI MNA Raja Riaz had claimed that CM Buzdar is ready to address the reservations of the Tareen group.

Riaz claimed CM House Punjab had contacted him and said that he expects to meet the chief minister soon.

These development come after Jahangir Tareen announced that his supporters had decided to form a separate group after the Punjab government initiated vindictive actions against them. However, he clarified that this was not a forward bloc and all members of the JKT group are still part of PTI.

  • SMQ labelled ‘anti-Semitic’ by CNN host

CNN’s Senior Global Affairs Analyst and anchorperson Bianna Golodryga has labelled Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi “anti-Semitic” after she interviewed him on the ongoing violence in Gaza.

Qureshi, who had appeared on Bianna’s show Thursday night, stated that the “tide was turning” against Israel as it was losing the media war despite its connections. The foreign minister had lashed out at Israel for its state-sanctioned massacre in Gaza, where nearly 250 Palestinian men, women and children have been killed in less than two weeks.

The minister during the show had said a ceasefire was inevitable since Israel “is losing out”.

When Golodryga asked Qureshi to explain Israel’s “connections”, Qureshi had said: “Deep pockets.”

Golodryga further asked him to explain his point of view on the situation, to which Qureshi said: “They are very influential people, I mean they control media.”

In response to this, the CNN journalist labelled him anti-Semitic.

“The point is, they have a lot of influence, and they get a lot of coverage. What’s balanced that is the citizen journalist who has been reporting, sharing video clips, and that has jolted people and woken up people…people who were sitting on the fence are today, speaking up,” added Qureshi.

Golodryga further stressed on the “anti-Semitic talk and rhetoric”. She stated that someone like Qureshi, who is in a powerful position, should say that’s wrong.

Antisemitism is generally considered to be a form of racism and is defined as “hostility, prejudice, or discrimination against Jews”.

When Qureshi was talking about the heavy Palestinian casualties as a result of Israeli airstrikes, she urged him to be objective and also focus on Israeli casualties caused by Hamas rockets.

After two weeks of violent attacks, Hamas and Israel reached a ceasefire early on Friday.

  • ‘Gaza hell on earth for children,’ says UN General Secretary

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday described Gaza as “hell on earth” for children, Reuters has reported.

He also appealed Israel for rapid and unhindered aid access. The UN Secretary General also told that would launch an appeal for humanitarian funding.

“If there is a hell on earth, it is the lives of children in Gaza today,” said Guterres, adding: “The hostilities have caused serious damage to vital civilian infrastructure in Gaza, including roads and electricity lines, contributing to a humanitarian emergency. Crossings into Gaza have been closed and power shortages are affecting water supplies.”

“Access for humanitarian goods is paramount. Attacks by militant groups on areas surrounding crossing points are unacceptable,” Guterres said. “At the same time, Israel has a duty to allow and facilitate rapid and unhindered access for humanitarian aid, into Gaza.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office yesterday, announced a ceasefire on Friday in Gaza after 11 days of violence, Al Jazeera has reported. As per media reports, Israel’s PM office issued a statement from the security cabinet called the truce “mutual and unconditional”.

The ceasefire will be monitored by Egypt, which has been agreed upon by Israel and Hamas

Good morning, *|MERGE1|*, It’s May 20. Today, I came across a heartbreaking video of a traumatized Palestinian child, unable to close his eyes due to the fear of bombing. The video will haunt me forever. The children of Gaza do not deserve what is happening to them. Unarmed civilians do not deserve to go to sleep, thinking they might not wake up. No human deserves the mental trauma which Palestinians are going through. All we can do is raise our voices..

The weather today will be sunny.

  • Diana was tricked into giving explosive interview on marriage, reveals inquiry

Diana was tricked into giving explosive interview on marriage, reveals inquiry

Journalist Martin Bashir tricked princess Diana into giving an explosive BBC television interview in which she lifted the lid on her troubled marriage to Prince Charles, an independent investigation concluded on Thursday.

Read more – Prince William welcomes new investigation into Diana’s explosive BBC interview

Retired senior judge John Dyson said Bashir commissioned faked bank statements that falsely suggested some of Diana’s closest aides were being paid by the security services to keep tabs on her.

Bashir then showed them to Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, in a successful bid to convince him to arrange a meeting between himself and Diana and earn her trust.

Dyson said he was “satisfied” that Bashir showed fake bank statements “so as to deceive Earl Spencer and induce him to arrange the meeting with Princess Diana”.

“By behaving as described… Mr Bashir acted inappropriately and in serious breach” of the corporation’s own editorial guidelines on “straight dealing”, Dyson added.

Questions have long been asked about how Bashir convinced Diana to talk on the BBC’s flagship Panorama programme in November 1995, which was watched by a record 22.8 million people and won a string of television awards.

In it, she famously said, “there were three people” in her marriage — her, Charles and his long-time mistress and now wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles — and also admitted adultery.

Diana’s friend, Simone Simmons, told The Sun that the interview had “destroyed her pyschologically” and “made her paranoid”.

Bashir, now 58, was little-known at the time of the interview but went on to have a high-profile career on US television networks, and interviewed stars such as Michael Jackson.

He returned to work for the corporation as religion editor until he stepped down last week, citing ill health, just hours before Dyson’s report was submitted to BBC bosses.

Earlier, a 1996 internal inquiry by future BBC chief Tony Hall and another senior figure, Anne Sloman, cleared Bashir of wrong-doing.

But Dyson called that probe “flawed and woefully ineffective”.

Hall, now chair of the board of trustees at Britain’s National Gallery, admitted that the probe “fell well short of what was required”, and said he was “wrong to give Martin Bashir the benefit of the doubt”.

Meanwhile, BBC director-general Tim Davie said the corporation accepted Dyson’s findings completely and offered a “full and unconditional apology”.

The broadcaster also said it was handing back the awards the programme won for the interview.

Bashir also apologised, saying the faking of the bank statements was “a stupid thing do and was an action I deeply regret”.

But he maintained it had “no bearing whatsoever on the personal choice by Princess Diana to take part”, and he was still “immensely proud” of the interview.

Davie equally said the princess was “keen on the idea of an interview with the BBC”. Her estranged husband had spoken to commercial channel ITV in 1994, and also admitted adultery.

However, he added that “the BBC should have made greater effort to get to the bottom of what happened at the time and been more transparent about what it knew.”

Diana and Charles formally divorced in 1996. She died aged 36 in a high-speed car crash while being chased by paparazzi photographers in Paris the following year. Charles married Camilla in 2005.
