    VIDEO: Indian police officer requests Muslims to pray for coronavirus pandemic to end

    A video of a police officer in Mumbai requesting the Muslim community to pray for the coronavirus pandemic to end during Ramzan on a loudspeaker has gone viral on social media.

    “Main ne suna hai kay taraweeh ki namaz mein bohat jaldi suni jati hai to aap namaz me yahi mangna ke COVID hamare shehar se, hamare daish se jaldi chala jae (I have heard that Taraweeh prayers are heard, so please that COVID leaves our city and the country soon), the policeman can be heard saying in the video.

    Meanwhile, Pakistanis are extended their prayers for residents of it’s neighbouring country as India fights a deadly second wave.

    Prime Minister Imran Khan, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry and Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi also extended their prayers for India.

    #PakistanstandswithIndia and #IndiaNeedOxygen were some of the top trends on the microblogging website.

    Farhan Saeed, Shaan and Shoaib Akhtar were also among those who prayed for those suffering in India.

    Earlier on Friday, the Managing Trustee of Edhi Foundation Faisal Edhi wrote a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and offered help to manage the deadly second wave of coronavirus in India.

    India posted a record tally of 346,786 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, while daily deaths from COVID-19 also jumped by a record, government data released on Saturday showed.

    As per Indian media outlets, from the first wave of COVID-19, the demand for medical oxygen had increased from 700 metric tonnes per day to 2,800 metric tonnes per day. However, in the past few days, the demand has reached nearly 5,000 metric tonnes per day.

    Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday announced that there will not not be a complete lockdown but in order to control the situation, people must follow SOPs. PM appealed to the nation that if they follow SOPs and wear masks regularly, Pakistan will not have to take any strict measures. PM said that despite suggestions of lockdowns in cities, he has not taken this decision as it affects the poor the most. “Be careful yourself. Otherwise we will have no other option.”

    PM said that the Pakistan Army will assist the police in imposing SOPs.

    Key decisions taken by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC):

    1. Schools in districts with positivity rates above 5% closed until Eid
    2. Markets to close at 6pm. Only shops selling essential goods to operate after 6pm
    3. Outdoor and indoor dining banned during Ramzan
    4. Indoor gyms to be closed
    5. Offices to close at 2pm daily with 50% capacity. Rest of the staff to work from home

    Aagha Ali urges government to postpone exams

    Aagha Ali has extended his support to students demanding exams be delayed and urged authorities to postpone them in wake of rising COVID-19 cases.

    “I’ve been getting 100s of messages from students [from] all over the country and trust me, all they say makes sense. Almost all institutes, schools and colleges have been closed and we all know how useful online classes were,” said Ali.

    The actor further said: “Apart from this, the new wave of corona is here and getting worse every day…and is taking many lives.”

    “Is this risk really worth it?,” he questioned. “Please postpone the exams or promote the students on their previous records.”

    Ali added: “The whole country has been going through a lot of pressure and this is only giving students extreme mental stress.”

    Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood on April 18 had confirmed that A, AS, O’ Level and IGCSE exams will be held as per the date sheet announced by CAIES and there will be no cancellation or delay in the exams. Mahmood had added that those students wishing to take the exams in October-November can do it for the same fee that they’ve already paid.

    Following his announcement, several celebrities including Asim Azhar requested the government to postpone the exams considering the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases.

    Meanwhile, Twitter raged with students advocating for the cancellation of board exams this year, saying their learning schedules had been deeply disturbed this year. Several students also protested on the streets so that the government takes proper notice of their demands.

    #ExamCancelHoga, #ImranKhanCancelExam and #ShafqatMahmood were also among the top trends on the micro-blogging site.

    Mansha Pasha also expressed support for the students saying that she was proud of her husband Jibran Nasir for advocating for them.

    LHC, IHC and PHC have dismissed the petitions of the Cambridge students. Sindh High Court now will announce the verdict on Friday at 4 pm.

    Jahangir Khan Tareen said on Thursday that he has been given an assurance that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan will meet his group soon.

    “Now that a cool wind is blowing from Islamabad, we are satisfied,” said Tareen.

    Tareen also claimed he has the support of 40 lawmakers.

    Talking to the media outside a sessions court in Lahore, Tareen said that when the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was in power, the government investigated his business and sent him notices but even the PML-N did not do to him what is being done now. “Even the PML-N did not turn a civil case to a criminal case, which has been done now.”

    Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told anchorperson Adil Shahzeb that he does not know about any upcoming meeting between Tareen and PM Imran. “Frankly I have not talked to either of the two about this.” Chaudhry added that Tareen played an important role in the formation of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. “Everyone acknowledged and appreciates Tareen sahab’s role.”

    Due to an increasing number of COVID-19 cases, Canadian authorities have banned all passenger flights from Pakistan and India for 30 days.

    Canadian transportation Minister Omar Alghabra announced that “given the higher number of cases of Covid-19 detected in air passengers arriving in Canada from India and Pakistan, I am suspending all commercial and private passenger flights arriving in Canada from India and Pakistan for 30 days.”

    “This is a temporary measure, while we assess the evolving situation and determine appropriate measures going forward,” he added.

    The ban will not be imposed on the cargo flights to ensure the supply of vaccinations, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other essential goods in the time of crises.

    Almost 20 per cent of the travellers coming to Canada are Indians with half of them testing positive, said the report.

    The transportation minister further added that epidemiologists and researchers are trying to make sense of the new variants. Meanwhile, halting travel activities is imperative to curb the trajectory of the cases.

    According to data available with the Canadian health authorities, almost 18 flights from Dehli and two from Lahore that arrived in Toronto and Vancouver in the past month have had at least one passenger on board who tested positive for COVID-19.

    Besides, Canada last December briefly suspended flights from Britain over concerns about outbreaks of a Covid variant.

    Moreover, on Thursday, parliament voted unanimously to urge the government to ban non-essential flights from Covid hotspots where variants have surged, including India and Brazil.

    Several dozen cases of Indian variant have already been identified in Canada, say health authorities in Canada.

    Some countries have taken similar steps to prevent worsening the outbreaks due to this variant: the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced that they will suspend all flights from India.

    All travellers to Canada are already subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine. They must also present a negative COVID test before boarding an international flight, and another upon arrival in Canada.

    Nida Yasir and husband Yasir Nawaz have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

    Sharing pictures of themselves getting vaccinated, Yasir said: “First dose of COVID-19 vaccine from South City hospital [in Karachi].”

    Nida also shared a short video clip of herself getting the first dose.

    “First dose [of] COVID-19 vaccine,” wrote Nida in the caption.

    After getting the dose, Nida can be heard praising the healthcare worker who administered her the vaccine.

    “Wah kya halka hath hai. Pata hi nahi chala, mein toh darr rahi thi.“

    Last year in May, Nida, Yasir and their daughter had tested positive for the virus and were isolating themselves at home. After recovering, they had also donated their plasma to help coronavirus patients in critical conditions.

    Meanwhile, an Instagram user commented on Nida’s post that how is she able to get the dose when she’s not above the age of 50. Nida replied and cleared that they have received a private vaccine dose, which is is now available for all age groups in Pakistan.

    Indian forces have claimed to have captured another ‘Pakistani spy pigeon’ near Kahagargh, Amristar.

    As per the report, the pigeon was allegedly carrying a “suspicious piece of paper tied to its legs” when it landed on the shoulder of an Indian army officer who was on guard duty about 500 meters from the border.

    A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged in Kahagarh police station in Amritsar against the intrusion of pigeon.

    Last year in May, Indian forces were engaged in the same operation when a pigeon with a pink patch and tag on its leg was captured as a “suspected Pakistani spy.”

    As per the police record, the pigeon had flown into the house of women living in the Chadwal area of Amritsar, who then caught the pigeon and handed it over to the police for investigation.

    Allegedly, Pakistani spy pigeons have been trespassing the Indian borders regularly since early 2015.

    The Mumbai police very sweetly responded to a man on Twitter who wanted to meet his girlfriend during the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the government.

    Ashwin Vinod, a resident of Mumbai, tagged the official Twitter account of the Mumbai police, asking them which sticker he should use for his vehicle as he wanted to see his girlfriend.

    “What sticker should I use in order to go out and meet my girlfriend? I miss her,” wrote Vinod on Twitter.

    Replying to his message, the police said his requirement does not fall under the category of essential or emergency services and urged him to stay at home.

    “We understand it’s essential for you sir but unfortunately it doesn’t fall under our essentials or emergency categories! Distance makes the heart grow fonder and currently, you healthier,” read the response.

    “P.s. We wish you a lifetime together. This is just a phase,” added the police.

    Social media users appreciated the way police responded to the man’s request in this difficult time.
