Deportation of Afghan card holders will begin from April 15

The federal interior ministry has directed the Punjab government to initiate the second phase of an operation aimed at deporting Afghan citizen card holders starting from April 15.

During a video conference chaired by Federal Interior Secretary Aftab Durrani, in the presence of Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin and other senior officials, it was decided that the federal government would provide Punjab with lists of Afghan Citizen Card Holders. These lists will then be shared with law enforcement agencies, including the police.

Initially, card holders will be encouraged to voluntarily return to Afghanistan. Subsequently, those who do not comply will be apprehended and deported. Sources emphasised that the availability of data on Afghan citizen card holders within the federal government will streamline the process, eliminating previous challenges associated with tracing illegal foreigners.

Following the completion of the second phase of deportations, plans for the third phase, targeting Afghan POR (Proof of Residence) card holders, were also discussed. According to sources, over 400,000 illegal Afghan nationals have already been deported.

Kabul Says Eight Killed In Pakistani Air Strikes On Eastern Afghanistan

Eight people, all women and children, were killed on Monday in “reckless” air strikes by the Pakistani military in the border regions of Afghanistan, the Taliban government’s spokesman said.

Border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have risen since the Taliban government seized power in 2021, with Islamabad claiming militant groups are carrying out regular attacks from the neighbouring country.

At “around 3:00 am (2230 GMT Sunday), Pakistani aircraft bombarded civilian homes” in Khost and Paktika provinces near the border with Pakistan, spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

The Taliban government “strongly condemns these attacks and calls this reckless action a violation of and an attack on Afghanistan’s sovereignty”, he added.

The strikes come after seven Pakistani troops were killed in an attack inside Pakistan territory on Saturday, for which the country’s President Asif Ali Zardari vowed retaliation.

“Pakistan has decided that whoever will enter our borders, homes or country and commit terror, we will respond to them strongly, regardless of who it is or from which country,” he said while attending the funeral prayers of the soldiers, which included a lieutenant colonel.

Areas along the border have long been a stronghold for militant groups such as Pakistan’s home-grown Taliban group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which operates across the porous frontier with Afghanistan.

Analysts say militants in the former tribal areas have become emboldened since the Taliban’s return to power, with TTP waging a growing campaign against security officials.

The Taliban deny harbouring Pakistani militants.

In 2022, Taliban authorities said Pakistani military helicopters carried out strikes along the Afghan side of the border killing at least 47 people.

The TTP issued an official statement denying that Monday’s strikes targeted the group, saying their members operate from within Pakistan.

However, a TTP source who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to media said the strikes in Paktika and Khost left at least nine people dead.

“A house has been attacked where two women and seven children have been killed and a child has been wounded” in the Barmal district in Paktika.

“A bombardment in the Pasa Mela area of Khost also has casualties.”

The dead body of Faheemuddin, a German citizen of Pakistani origin who was killed in Germany, has reportedly been brought to Karachi.

Faheemuddin was murdered in the city of Ulm in the southern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, when a local resident entered his house and attacked the family with a knife.

As a result of the attack, 58-year-old Faheemuddin died on the spot, while his wife and 13-year-old daughter were seriously injured before being taken to the hospital for medical assistance.

According to the police, two other daughters remained safe during the attack after they hid in the house. The police reached the scene after getting informed, shooting and killing the attacker.

The police claim that the killer was mentally unwell and had returned from mental therapy a few months ago.

Faheemuddin’s body has now been brought to Karachi. His funeral prayers will be offered in Federal B area after Zuhr prayer.

His brother, Wajihauddin, said that Fahimuddin had been living in Germany with his family since 1992.

Wajihuddin claimed that the killer was not a psychopath but a taxi driver, no one should be labelled as a psychopath.

  • ‘Bloody’ Ramzan Friday as Gaza strike kills 36 relatives

‘Bloody’ Ramzan Friday as Gaza strike kills 36 relatives

Palestinian Territories: Displaced by Israeli bombardment, the Tabatibi family gathered in central Gaza to eat together during the first Friday night of Ramzan, a scene that soon turned into a bloodbath.

An air strike hit the building where they were staying as women prepared the pre-fasting meal, killing 36 members of the family, survivors told AFP on Saturday.

The health ministry in Gaza, which provided the same death toll, blamed Israel for the strike in Nuseirat, while the Israeli military said it was looking into the incident.

“This is my mother, this is my father, this is my aunt, and these are my brothers,” 19-year-old Mohammed Al-Tabatibi, whose left hand was injured in the strike, said through tears at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in nearby Deir Al-Balah.

“They bombed the house while we were in it. My mother and my aunt were preparing the suhoor food. They were all martyred.”

He spoke as bodies were spread out in the hospital courtyard, then stacked on a truck to be driven to a cemetery.

Because there were not enough body bags, some of the dead — including at least two children — were wrapped in white cloth stained with blood, AFPTV footage showed.

The first Friday of Ramzan, the Muslim fasting month which began on Monday, passed peacefully in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, despite concerns about tensions at the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

But it was a different story in Gaza.

The strike in Nuseirat was one of 60 “deadly air strikes” reported overnight by the press office of the government, from Gaza City in the north to Rafah in the south.

“This is a bloody night, a very bloody night,” said Salama Maarouf of the media office.

Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 31,553 people in Gaza since October 7, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry.

In Rafah, where the majority of Gaza’s 2.4 million people have sought refuge, more bloodshed is feared after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Friday he had approved plans for a military operation there.

Yet even before any such operation begins, air strikes continue, including one early Saturday that witnesses said killed Issa Duhair, the muezzin of a mosque, along with his two sons.

Mahmoud Duhair, a 41-year-old relative who lives nearby, described the muezzin as “a good man” who, as usual, dutifully performed the call to prayer before dawn on Saturday, then went to eat with his family “when his house was struck.”

Back in Nuseirat, in central Gaza, Yussef Tabatibi said the true toll of the strike that killed 36 members of his family could rise.

“Some of the martyrs we are unable to retrieve. We lack equipment, bulldozers, machinery, or anything else, ” he told AFP, his hands and sweatshirt covered with dust from trying to clear rubble.

“We retrieve them only with our hands. We brought shovels and hammers, but to no avail. Look at the extent of the destruction.”

  • Gold price drops by Rs1,050 per tola in Pakistan

Gold price drops by Rs1,050 per tola in Pakistan

On Saturday, gold rates in Pakistan saw a decline, mirroring the global trend where prices dipped.

The precious metal was valued at Rs227,500 per tola after experiencing a drop of Rs1,050 throughout the day. Similarly, the 10-gramme gold price stood at Rs195,045, marking a decrease of Rs900.

These figures were provided by the All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA).

The previous day, Friday, gold prices had remained steady at Rs228,550 per tola. However, Saturday witnessed a shift as the international rate of gold, with a premium of $20, settled at $2,175 per ounce.

This reflects a $13 decrease in the international market, as reported by APGJSA.

In contrast, silver rates remained unchanged at Rs2,600 per tola, indicating stability in that market segment amidst the fluctuations in gold prices.

The fluctuations in gold rates are closely monitored by investors and consumers alike, as they reflect not only economic dynamics within Pakistan but also global trends impacting the precious metals market.

This dip in prices may influence consumer behaviour and investment decisions in the coming days.

Court grants bail to journalist Asad Toor in anti-judiciary campaign

Special Judge Central Humayun Dilawar granted bail to vlogger Asad Toor on Saturday in a case pertaining to allegations of running a malicious campaign against the judiciary.

Ishtiaq Hussain Shah, the special prosecutor for the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), went to court and said the agency doesn’t oppose giving bail to the vlogger.

The bail was granted against surety bonds worth Rs5,000.

Separately, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) also declared call-up notices issued to Toor by the FIA against the law.

IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq issued a seven-page written order regarding the vlogger’s plea against the FIA notices. He stated that the FIR was filed because notices were wrongly issued.

The judge maintained that the relevant forum can be approached once the FIR is registered, adding that the court cannot order Toor’s release due to the bar on taking suo motu action.

  • All cargo offloaded from first aid ship to reach Gaza: NGO

All cargo offloaded from first aid ship to reach Gaza: NGO

A US charity said Saturday its team in Gaza Strip had finished unloading the first maritime aid shipment to reach the besieged territory.

“All cargo was offloaded and is being readied for distribution in Gaza,” World Central Kitchen said in a statement, noting that the aid was “almost 200 tonnes of food”.

The group is preparing a second boat of 240 tonnes of food to set sail from Cyprus, the starting point of a new maritime aid route across the eastern Mediterranean.

The humanitarian effort is intended to mitigate food shortages that have prompted UN famine warnings in Gaza from the United Nations and aid workers.

“That shipment includes pallets of canned goods and bulk product including beans, carrots, canned tuna, chickpeas, canned corn, parboiled rice, flour, oil and salt,” World Central Kitchen said.

The second shipment would also include a forklift and a crane to assist with deliveries, it added.

The humanitarian group said it had “no information to release on when our second boat and the crew ship will be able to embark.”

The Israeli military on Friday confirmed the first vessel, operated by the Spanish charity Open Arms, had arrived and said soldiers had been deployed to secure the area and conduct a security inspection.

The military also said the delivery of humanitarian aid by sea did not constitute a breach of its years-long maritime blockade of Gaza, which has been ruled since 2007 by Hamas.

World Central Kitchen had to build a jetty southwest of Gaza City to deliver the aid.

Israel has killed at least 31,490 people in Gaza since October 7, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

As cumbersome Israeli security checks and logistical hurdles slow overland aid delivery to Gaza, countries have pursued alternatives including airdrops and the new maritime corridor.

Jose Andres, founder of World Central Kitchen, said on social media platform X on Friday that the first shipment was “a test” and that “we could bring thousands of tonnes each week.”
