The opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Pakistan Super League (PSL) will cost around Rs210 million, as the cricketing tournament, unlike its previous editions, is held entirely in Pakistan.
According to Cricket Pakistan, the colorful and extravagant opening ceremony will be held at National Stadium in Karachi, following which Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United will play the first match of the tournament.
The two are also the only teams guaranteed to be at the event as according to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials, the teams that are scheduled to compete the following day will not be able to take part in the opening ceremony where popular local singers, including Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Abrarul Haq, Sajad Ali, Sanam Maarwi, Aima Baig, Abu Mohammad, Fareed Ayaz and Soch band are expected to perform.
Contrary to PCB officials’ statement, Peshawar Zalmi management has said that the team would also be present at the stadium.

Led by former Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, Gladiators will look to kick off the fifth edition of the tournament with a bang.
Despite the fact that the new of teenage pace sensation, Naseem Shah, is out of at least two matches of the tournament, the Gladiators, with a host of international and local players, will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
With top run-scorer Shane Watson and his Australian counterpart Ben Cutting, along with England’s Jason Roy and fast bowlers Tymal Mills and Windies Keemo Paul, the Quetta-based franchise will want to start the tournament with a win.
Among the national players are batsmen Ahmed Shehzad, Khurram Manzoor and Sarfaraz, and bowlers Sohail Khan, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz.
They will be without the services of middle-order batsman Umar Akmal who was banned by Pakistan Cricket Board from participating in domestic tournaments on Thursday.
Taking on the Gladiators will be two-time champions Islamabad United, led by leg-spinner Shadab Khan. Adding to the mix is South African pacer Dale Steyn who joins his Proteas team-mate Colin Ingram. Luke Ronchi, Colin Munro, Phil Salt and Dawid Malan make up the remaining international players for United.
Not to be left behind are the national superstars Asif Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Muhammad Musa, Rumman Raees and Hussain Talat, who just might give United the edge to lift up a third PSL title this year.
The match between Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United starts at 7 pm.
Daren Sammy, one of the first cricketers who agreed to play the PSL 2 final in Pakistan in 2017, might just get honorary Pakistani citizenship. The owner of the PSL team Peshawar Zalmi, Javed Afridi, requested the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board to help get his team captain a green passport.
“We requested honorary citizenship for Daren Sammy and it is almost on the table of president,” Afridi said during the unveiling of PSL 2020 trophy in Karachi. Afridi also said that the request might be approved if the PCB Chairman pushes for it or ‘makes a phone call’.
Afridi also said that he has Sammy’s voice notes that are, ‘too emotional for Pakistan”. A formal request has been made to the President and a decision is pending.
Sammy is often referred to as ‘Daren Sammy Khan’ because of his loyalty to the team from Peshawar.
Recently he tweeted in Urdu using google translate which got him into some fun trouble.
Sammy has played international cricket for the West Indies and is a two time T20 World Cup winning captain. He plays as a right-handed batsman and a fast-medium bowler.

A patient at King’s College Hospital in London has played the violin while having brain surgery.
The medical team asked Dagmar Turner, 53, to play the violin to ensure parts of the brain that control hand movements and coordination were not damaged during the surgery.
Ms. Turner was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2013.
The committed violinist, who plays in Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra, was worried the surgery would result in the loss of her ability to play. Her tumour was located in the right frontal lobe of her brain, close to an area that controls the fine movement of her left hand.
Professor Keyoumars Ashkan, the consultant neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospital, came up with an idea to operate and reduce the risk.
The brain tumour specialist holds a degree in music and is an accomplished pianist and shared Ms. Turner’s desire to save her musical skills.
Before the surgery, doctors spent two hours carefully plotting her brain to identify areas that were active when she played the violin and those responsible for controlling language and movement.
Ms. Turner played the violin while her tumour was removed, while closely monitored by the anesthetists and a therapist.
IMF’s new report “Women in the Labour force: The role of fiscal policies” highlights an average of 2pc rise of the female workforce in Pakistan and 1pc decrease in India, DAWN reported.
According to the IMF’s staff report, women in most countries do not have the same opportunities to participate in economic activities as men have. This gender inequality has reduced to a good extent, but the average of female labour participation is below the male rate.
Globally, about on-quarter of countries experienced a decline in female force participation. Countries such as India and Sri Lanka facing an average annual decrease of one per cent between 1990 and 2018, whereas Pakistan, Peru and Spain experienced an average annual increase of 2pc.

The report also says “Many countries have adopted fiscal policy measures to promote gender equality since the mid-1980s. Countries use tax and expenditure policies to address gender inequality and the advancement of women in areas such as education and economic empowerment. Fruthermore, in 2018, at least 80 countries have used gender-responsive fiscal policy interventions to reduce gender inequality.

As the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) gears up to host Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches in Lahore, traders have said that strict security measures, such as sealing off markets and roads to facilitate the movement of the teams, are being taken by the government, which would ultimately cause a loss of at least Rs23 billion to local businesses every day, Profit reported.
According to traders and office bearers at Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), they are not against cricket matches as these activities “are very encouraging and aid in improving the image of the country”, but the closure of Liberty Market and others in surrounding areas for just one day will cause losses worth around Rs23 billion.
“We are frequently in contact with the government and are also putting forth proposals to make a long-term strategy that can help the business community and locals,” the reported quoted them as saying during a press conference at LCCI on Tuesday.
The LCCI president was of the view that revival of international cricket in Pakistan was a healthy sign and would promote a soft image of the country, but economic activities carried equal importance, therefore, the government should make a plan in consultation with all stakeholders to hold sporting events without affecting businesses.
He maintained that during cricket matches in the recent past, Liberty and other markets, as well as restaurants adjacent to the Gaddafi Stadium, were shut down, resulting in significant losses to businesses, not only to the traders, but also daily wagers.
The LCCI president said that the business community was ready to cooperate with the government to ensure all necessary security measures during these matches, but they also wanted that adjacent markets and restaurants not be forced to remain shut because, on top of all the losses, it would create the impression that security conditions are not normal yet.
“A state-of-the-art luxurious hotel should be built as soon as possible within the premises of Gaddafi Stadium Lahore for guest teams because it is the only solution to address all concerns,” he added.

500 thousand dollars cash (7 crore, 72 lakhs rupees) is what the Pakistan Super League winners will take home this year and the runner-up will get 200 thousand dollars (3 crore, 90 lakh rupees).
The league, in a press release, shared that the total prize money is one million dollars and 4,500 dollars (6 lakhs 95 thousand rupees) have been set for each man of the match award after each match.

80 thousand dollars (one crore 23 lakhs) will also be distributed among the best batsman, player of the tournament, and ‘for the spirit of cricket’ award. Other prizes include best catch, best run-out and most sixes.
The 5th PSL will begin from Feb 20th in Karachi. There will be 34 matches in total, with nine matches in Karachi, 14 in Lahore, eight in Rawalpindi and three in Multan.
The six-team tournament will be held across four venues with Karachi staging nine matches, Lahore 14 matches, Rawalpindi eight and Multan three matches.
In the opening match defending champions, Quetta Gladiators will take on two-time former winners Islamabad United at the National Stadium in Karachi.
PTI’s Shahbaz Gill, who was the former advisor to CM Usman Buzdar, is no stranger to controversy. In a recent program on GEO News, analyst Hafeezullah Niazi has claimed that Gill told PM Khan that Niazi had approached him on PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz’s behalf, saying that she would offer 50 lakhs if Gill would become her advisor.
Niazi denies knowing Shahbaz Gill, saying he had only bumped into him once at a restaurant, and since they had both seen each other on programs, they exchanged salaams.
We have reached out to Gill for a comment but he has yet to respond to the allegations.
In March 2019 Gill had said that Twitter had partially suspended his twitter account after Maryam Nawaz had complained about him to the social networking site. He said that because he was updating the country on Nawaz Sharif’s health, Maryam had filed a complaint.
