The Saudis, known for their strict adherence to Shariah laws, have recently progressed in technology and societal aspects as they attempt to rebrand themselves as a modern state. Keeping that in mind, concerned authorities have decided not to close businesses during prayer time because they want to create a 24 hours business environment and a promising economy.
Dr Al Gaith, a member of Saudi Arabia’s Shoura Council, expressed “There is no legal base for closing shops for prayer after amending the bylaws of the authority. Forcing shops to close their doors and people to pray right at the beginning of prayer time, and to do this in a mosque, stands no ground – neither in Shariah nor in law.”
“Rather is rather a breach of both of them, and an infringement on people’s religious rights (right of Ijtihad freedom to follow a reference) and worldly rights (freedom of movement, shopping, benefiting of services round the clock without being forced to abide by judicial matters subject to conflict and differences.”
Saudi Arabia is now aiming to become tourist-friendly. Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the country and last year the government granted permanent residence to a foreigner. A few years back, it was near to impossible.

Moisture in the air was recorded at 43% and visibility level was 3 km.

According to Shaan, Zarrar is based on 90% true events and captures fifth generation warfare and other threats that should be highlighted in mainstream media but are ignored.
He also added that Zarrar shows a patriotic man who loves his country and wants to eliminate those elements which facilitate terrorists and terrorism in the country.
“It’s like a Bond Film with a true story. Not a fauji sort like we have been seeing on our screens in past. It’s not like Waar or Yalghar. It’s a new breed of a spy thriller action genre, and we are planning sequels and prequel to the film in the future if things go well,” Shaan had further shared.
A global research company, IPSOS, conducted the second Global Consumer Confidence Index survey which revealed that about 31% of Pakistanis have either lost their jobs or know people who lost their jobs in 2019.
It also stated that around 83% of Pakistanis are fearful of losing their jobs and inflation, unemployment and increasing poverty were the problems that were the most worrying for them.

The survey also stated that 17% of businessmen fear going into a loss and only 21% believe that the country is going in the right direction.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan is hopeful that 2020 will be the year of jobs in Pakistan right after the economy stabilization plan. He said that the media had tried to ‘insult’ and attack him for his goals.
Results of the survey are based on a nationally representative sample of 2,900 people aged between 19 and 65. It was conducted in December 2019.
Approximately 80 patients have reportedly lost their eyesight due to eye drops that were administered to them at Al-Shifa Hospital in Islamabad.
According to a report in Dawn, the eye drops were given to the patients of glaucoma after surgery. Glaucoma is a condition in which an optic nerve, vital for good vision, is damaged.
A 53-year-old man Manzoor Ahmed Kiani, who works as a sub-inspector in Bagh, Azad Kashmir told the publication that he was operated for glaucoma on January 8 and was given the eye drops after his surgery. He shared that the doesn’t know “what kind of impurity was in the eye drops” because after using them he had a severe infection following which he lost his eyesight.
Kiani shared that the patient on the next bed had the same experience.
In response to the allegations, the media coordinator of Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Mirza Riaz Baig said that the condition of only eight people had deteriorated.
Baig said that 250 operations are conducted daily at the hospital and “only eight patients had a reaction to the eye drops”.
“One woman, out of them, lost her sight and she belongs to the constituency of the former prime minister. Other patients’ eyesight could not recover fully so we called them again and admitted them to provide treatment,” he elaborated.
Baig also shared that the hospital provides free treatment to 70 percent of its patients.
“We have been serving the people so no one should doubt the intentions of the hospital. The eye drops that were administered were imported and we never had a complaint like this in the past,” he said.
Meanwhile the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) Chief Executive Officer Dr Asim Rauf has announced that the matter will be investigated. He said that he will direct the Pharmacy Service Division to look into the matter and submit a detailed report regarding the incident.
Dr Rauf also said he had never heard of people losing their eyesight due to eye drops, adding that people usually develop allergies due to the drops but often recover after a few days.
Former Pakistani bowling star Shoaib Akhtar has dismissed former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag’s claim that Rawalpindi Express showers praise on India because “it makes business”.
An old video, showcasing Sehwag, had recently resurfaced and made waves on social media in which the former Indian sportsman says Akhtar praises cricket rivals as it would make him a quick buck, The News reported.
Akhtar, while speaking to a private media outleton Wednesday, explained that the video was taken out of proportion and sarcastically remarked that he had “more money than Sehwag had hair on his head”.
“Sehwag is a great friend of mine. He spoke these words in a light-heartened way but people were quick to take things out of context,” he said. “I mean, I have more money than he has hair on his head.”
Furthermore, Akhtar clarified that other big names in Pakistan cricket would share kind words for the neighbours and added that “jealous” people want to divide the two cricket nations.
“I have fans across the world, not just in India. That’s why I have the fastest growing YouTube channel. It does not mean that I’m looking to make money if I compliment them. Ramiz Raja and Rashid Latif say good things about India as well.”
“I do think that there is a factor of jealousy, I have been targeted time and time again we are already politically divided but now people want to divide cricket as well,” he said.
Following the controversy that sparked surrounding the release of Sarmad Khoosat’s Zindagi Tamasha, celebrities including Mahira Khan, Osman Khalid Butt and Mansha Pasha have extended their support to the filmmaker and raised their voice against the intolerance in the society.
Clearly they get things done faster than anyone in Pakistan. Sindh has banned #ZindagiTamasha until further notice. Others bound to follow suit. So, maybe after celebrating this ‘success’ you can raise your voices against one of the most heinous crimes one can commit?
The govt needs to do so much more to promote the arts in Pakistan which are currently going thru a huge credit crunch due to lack of advertising revenue. One can forget abt original Pakistani content if now they also start caving into outside pressures. #ZindagiTamasha
Worrying and amusing when you realise that under the current environment a film like #ZindagiTamasha would have a much smoother screening in KSA than Pakistan. We have a Ministry of Religious Affairs and the CCI but we submit to outfits like TLP giving them credibility & power
On Tuesday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan announced that Khoosat’s Zindagi Tamasha will be critically reviewed by the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII). The film’s producer was also directed to postpone the release of his film for the time being.
Before that, the Government of Punjab had barred the filmmaker from releasing his film “in wake of persistent complaints received from different quarters”. The government also said that the film will be re-examined and the film’s makers have been directed to arrange a show in this regard “in any cinema house” on February 3 at 3pm, so it may be reviewed. The film’s team has also been told to ensure the presence of a representative “for personal hearing, if required by the committee”.
Similarly, the Sindh Government also placed a ban on the film as it may create unrest within the religious segment of the society and disrupt peace.
Earlier, after Khoosat penned an open letter to the Prime Minister, President, Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chief of Army Staff, Humayun Saeed and Sanam Saeed had also requested the government to facilitate the smooth release of the film.
The government must address this at the earliest. Filmmaking in Pakistan is already a tough challenge; those who dare to venture into it need to be encouraged and appreciated https://t.co/H2ZP1Wjd8H
Having produced a film myself, i can very well relate to the difficulties/challenges one has to face to make and release a feature film in a country with no real infrastructure. The government should facilitate all such endeavours otherwise our cinema will die before emerging. https://t.co/EZKW6D6DeE
Zindagi vaqai tamasha hai. All this effort to ban thought provoking stories despite censor boards giving it the go ahead, despite it being edited time and time again to appease sensitive sensibilities of a certain few, why? https://t.co/WvsJySGDFC
Written by Nirmal Bano and directed by Sarmad Khoosat, Zindagi Tamasha starres Arif Hassan, Samiya Mumtaz, Eman Suleman and Ali Qureshi in the lead. The film is centred around a naat khwan Rahat Khawaja (played by Hassan) and his family who are outcast from the society when a secret of Khawaja’s is leaked.
The official synopsis states: “The film is an intimate portrait of a family as well as a scorching political commentary on little gods on this earth who police our private passions.”
The film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival held in October 2019 where it also won the prestigious Kim Ji Seok Award.

Transparency International releases rankings – Pakistan’s rank falls – more corrupt than before https://t.co/ZnhmCPgryE
Pakistan witnessed slight improvement in the 2018 CPI, scoring a point higher than in 2017 but remaining unchanged in the rankings.
According to Geo, the country scored 33 out of 100 on the index — one point better than its score of 32 in the previous year. Its ranking, however, remained unchanged at 117 out of 180 countries, same as 2017.
TI’s annual report on CPI is formulated on the basis of input from 13 international agencies. In the case of Pakistan, however, the assessment of eight agencies is taken into account. These include the World Economic Forum Executive Opinion Survey; the World Bank Country Policy and Institutional Assessment; the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index; the Bertelsmann Stiftung Transformation Index; the Economist Intelligence Unit Country Risk Service; the Global Insight Country Risk Ratings; the IMD World Competitiveness Center World Competitiveness Yearbook Executive Opinion Survey; and the Varieties of Democracy project’s findings.
Pakistan in the last 10 years (since 2010) has improved its index score from 23 in 2010 to 33 in 2018. In 2016 and 2017, Pakistan maintained the same score, 32, which in 2018 increased to 33. However, never in these last ten years has Pakistan been assessed to have performed negatively as compared to the previous year.
