  • Solar storm to illuminate Northern Lights in 17 US states, offering skygazers a rare spectacle

Solar storm to illuminate Northern Lights in 17 US states, offering skygazers a rare spectacle

A solar storm anticipated for Thursday is set to provide residents in 17 American states with an extraordinary opportunity to witness the Northern Lights, AP has reported.

A stunning celestial phenomenon known as the Northern Lights or aurora borealis results from the interaction of solar wind with the Earth’s atmosphere. Northern Lights materialize when a magnetic solar wind collides with the Earth’s magnetic field, leading to the luminosity of atoms in the upper atmosphere. These lights manifest abruptly and vary in intensity.

The phenomenon is typically observed in regions such as Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia, but are now becoming visible in more southerly locations due to the culmination of an 11-year solar cycle projected to peak in 2024. Approximately three months ago, these captivating light displays were witnessed in Arizona, marking the occurrence of the third severe geomagnetic storm since the commencement of the current solar cycle in 2019.

The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks has predicted heightened auroral activity on Thursday in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Indiana, Maine, and Maryland. Additionally, Canada, including Vancouver, has also been forecasted to experience auroral activity.

Auroral activity is assessed using the Kp geomagnetic index, which ranges from zero to nine, with zero representing minimal activity and nine indicating a vibrant and active display.

The Geophysical Institute has predicted a Kp 6 ranking for Thursday’s upcoming storm.

‘I was not targeting anyone particularly’: Kajol provides clarification on ‘educated political leaders’ comment

Bollywood actress Kajol recently said in an interview to The Quint that people are steeped in traditions, and politicians are uneducated which is why there isn’t a clear viewpoint on how to move forward in India:

“You have political leaders who do not have an educational system background. I’m sorry but I’m going to go out and say that. I’m being ruled by leaders, so many of them, who do not have that viewpoint, which I think education does give you, at least the chance to look out for a different viewpoint.”

While some applauded the DDLJ actress for making a strong case for why its important to have educated leaders, some Twitter users were enraged by her comments and pointed out that Kajol herself was a school dropout.

Kajol took to Twitter to post a clarification, saying that she was emphasising the importance of education, and was not targeting any politician.

“I was merely making a point about education and its importance. My intention was not to demean any political leaders, we have some great leaders who are guiding the country on the right path.”

  • Koenigsegg’s new Gemera to offer mind-blowing 2,300 horsepower hybrid powertrain

Koenigsegg’s new Gemera to offer mind-blowing 2,300 horsepower hybrid powertrain

We have been acquainted with luxurious alternatives in the past, yet never encountered anything quite as remarkable as this. According to reports from the inauguration event at Koenigsegg’s newly established manufacturing facility, the company is poised to offer purchasers of the Gemera model an unprecedented V8 hybrid powertrain, boasting a staggering output of 2,300 horsepower.

Upon its initial revelation, Koenigsegg pledged that the Gemera, a two-door, four-seat vehicle, would exhibit a still-excessive 1,700 horsepower (1,268 kW/1,723 PS) generated by a three-cylinder engine harmoniously integrated with a hybrid system.

However, the Egg Registry reports that the production iteration of the Gemera will present an alternative powertrain. Discarding the three-cylinder engine, the vehicle will adopt a V8 engine sourced from the Jesko model.

The aforementioned 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine already commands an impressive output of 1,578 horsepower (1,177 kW/1,600 PS) and 1,106 lb-ft (1,500 Nm) of torque when utilising E85 fuel in the Jesko. Moreover, the company boldly asserts that this engine holds the title of the fastest revving production engine in existence, rendering it a highly coveted addition to nearly any automobile.

According to CarScoops, the precise method by which this powerhouse will fit within the same space previously occupied by the comparatively diminutive three-cylinder engine remains uncertain. Nonetheless, reports indicate that it will be coupled with Koenigsegg’s nine-speed Light Speed Transmission and, owing to the inclusion of the hybrid system, deliver an awe-inspiring 2,300 horsepower and 2,028 lb-ft (2,750 Nm) of torque.

Furthermore, the production model of the Gemera will be equipped with physical side mirrors instead of the cameras featured on earlier prototypes, adhering to the regulatory requirements of the United States. For enhanced performance, an optional “Ghost Package” will introduce several aerodynamic enhancements, including a rear wing, an extended front splitter, and an S-duct. It is worth noting, however, that this package compromises practicality by eliminating the front trunk.

Regrettably, the outlet informs us that production of the Gemera is still a considerable amount of time away, with the first customers anticipated to receive their vehicles in 2025.
