Protestors reject military operations in Swat

A large gathering appeared at Friday’s rally organised by the Swat Qaumi Jirga at Nishat Chowk, Mingora, against terrorism and military operations in the region.

The protestors maintained that acts of terrorism in the region were “state-sponsored and artificial” and warned that Swat’s residents would take matters into their hand if the state didn’t wipe out terrorism, Dawn News reported.

A protestor holding a white flag in his hand stated, “We are fed up with these fabricated terrorism projects. We demand peace and development initiatives on Pashtun soil. Those who devise these plans must know that such tactics can no longer fool the Pakhtun nation.”

Citing the September 21 attack on diplomats at Malam Jabba region, a speaker said, “Swat residents are known for their hospitality. Those foreign dignitaries were our guests, but unfortunately, some elements, who are opposed to Swat’s progress, orchestrated the bomb blast on their convoy,”

On Friday, veteran journalist Azaz Syed, on the Youtube channel ‘Talk SHOCK’, revealed that the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce hadn’t informed the Foreign Ministry of the diplomat’s visit to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

  • Israeli airstrike kill over 700 in Lebanon; claims Hezbollah Hassan Nasrullah dead

Israeli airstrike kill over 700 in Lebanon; claims Hezbollah Hassan Nasrullah dead

Israel has shifted the focus of its aggression from Gaza to Lebanon, where heavy bombing has killed more than 700 people and displaced around 118,000 over the past few days.

Israeli military announced on Saturday that Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was killed in a massive strike on Beirut the previous night.

“Hassan Nasrallah is dead,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani announced on X (formerly Twitter).

Captain David Avraham, another military spokesman, also confirmed to AFP that the Hezbollah chief had been “eliminated” following strikes on Friday on the Lebanese capital.

A source close to the Lebanese group meanwhile told AFP on condition of anonymity that contact with Nasrallah had been lost since Friday evening.

Contact with the group leader had been lost for two days and he had been rumoured killed during Israel’s last war with Hezbollah in 2006, the source said, adding that he later re-emerged unscathed.

    Death of Zainab Nasrullah

Israeli media has also claimed that Zainab Nasrallah, the daughter of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, has been martyred in the latest attack on Lebanon.

A report by Israeli new channel claimed the martyrdom of Zainab Nasrallah in an Israeli attack on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut but this news has not yet been confirmed by Hezbollah or the Lebanese authorities.

Zainab Hassan Nasrallah was recognized as a strong voice in Lebanon for supporting Hezbollah and for her family’s sacrifices.

In an interview to Al-Manar TV in 2022, while discussing the reaction of her parents to the martyrdom of her brother Hadi, Zainab Hassan Nasrallah said that not one tear fell from her parents’ eyes upon the martyrdom of her brother.

As per Israeli military statement, the strikes also killed Ali Karake, commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, and an unspecified number of other Hezbollah commanders.

    Who will replace Nasrullah?

Adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, Ali Larijani has said that Hezbollah is ready to launch an alternative leadership movement if Nasrallah is dead.
Talking about other commander and leaders in line, Ali Larijani said that Israel has crossed the “red line”, the situation has become very serious.

In case of the martyrdom of the Hezbollah leader, alternative leadership is ready to run the movement, said Larijani in a recent presser.
On the other hand, the Iranian news agency Tasnim News Agency claimed that the head of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was safe in the Israeli attack.

Thousands sleep on the streets as Israel strikes Beirut

Thousands of residents in Beirut’s densely-packed southern suburbs camped out overnight in streets, public squares and makeshift shelters after Israel ordered them out before its jets attacked the so-called Hezbollah stronghold.

“I expected the war to expand, but I thought it would be limited to (military) targets, not civilians, homes, and children,” said south Beirut resident Rihab Naseef, 56, who spent the night in a church yard.

AFP photographers saw families spend the night in the open, scenes unheard of in Lebanon’s capital since the Hezbollah and Israel last went to war in 2006.

“I didn’t even pack any clothes, I never thought we would leave like this and suddenly find ourselves on the streets,” Naseef said.

Israeli jets pounded Beirut’s south and its outskirts throughout the night, and Beirut woke up to the aftermath of a night at war, smoke billowing from blazes in several places.

    ‘What will happen?’

“I’m anxious and afraid of what may happen. I left my home without knowing where I’m going, what will happen to me, and whether I will return,” Naseef said.
Despite a night of intense strikes, the extent of the devastation and the casualty toll was still unclear early Saturday.

Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television broadcast footage from southern Beirut that showed flattened buildings, streets filled with rubble and clouds of smoke and dust above the area known as Dahiyeh.

  • Beloved Maggie Smith playing Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter dies at 89

Beloved Maggie Smith playing Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter dies at 89

Maggie Smith, who died on Friday aged 89, was an Oscar-winning legend of stage and screen, renowned for playing wide repertoire of characters during a decades-spanning career and personifying a particular kind of English eccentricity.

For more than 60 years, on stage and on screen, she excelled in whatever she turned her hand to, winning a Tony, two Oscars, three Golden Globes and five Baftas.

She became best-known in recent decades for her portayal of the kindly Professor McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” film franchise and the Dowager Countess in the hit television period drama series “Downton Abbey”.

Smith became an international star in the 1960s and 1970s, when she won Oscars for best actress in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (1969) and “Travels with my Aunt” (1972).

She was one of Britain’s most famous and beloved actors.

Her portrayal of the caustic Countess of Grantham, Lady Violet Crawley, in “Downton Abbey” (2010-2015), which was screened in over 100 countries, won her a new generation of admirers around the globe.

“It’s ridiculous. I led a perfectly normal life until Downton Abbey,” she told the British Film Institute in April 2017.

“I would go to theatres, I would go to galleries and things like that on my own. And now I can’t.”

Smith played the ruthless aristocrat in all six seasons of the show, created by screenwriter Julian Fellowes in 2010, winning a Golden Globe and three Emmy awards.

After initially declining to participate in a big-screen adaptation of the series, the actress eventually agreed to appear in the film, which was a hit around the world in 2019.

    • Snooty schoolteacher –

Born on December 28, 1934, the daughter of a secretary from Glasgow and an Oxford professor of pathology, Smith made her stage debut in 1952 with the Oxford University Dramatic Society.

A string of stage successes in London’s West End and on Broadway followed, and she famously appeared opposite Laurence Olivier in 1959.

This led to her becoming a member of Olivier’s celebrated 1960s National Theatre company, where she earned critical acclaim alongside her husband, the actor Robert Stephens.

By the end of the decade, Smith’s film career had taken off.

She won the best actress Academy Award in 1969 for her unforgettable portrayal of a snooty, unorthodox Edinburgh schoolteacher in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”.

She also picked up a best supporting actress award in 1978 for “California Suite” and, in all, won six Oscar nominations.

Smith’s marriage to heavy-drinking Stephens, with whom she had two sons, had collapsed in 1973 and they divorced two years later.

She remarried shortly after to screenwriter Beverley Cross, who died in 1998.

Smith was made a Dame of the British Empire in recognition of her work in 1990 and, beside the top honours, won many other stage and screen awards in both Britain and the United States.

    • ‘Energy and curiosity’ –

Smith was widely considered a near-flawless actress, with the rare ability to make a cameo role a central feature of a film.

“(She) can capture in a single moment more than many actors can convey in an entire film,” said acclaimed director Nicholas Hytner after working with her on “The Lady in the Van” (2015).

“She can be vulnerable, fierce, bleak and hilarious simultaneously, and she brings to the set each day the energy and curiosity of a young actor who’s just started out,” he added.

Smith left some people feeling overawed.

“It’s true I don’t tolerate fools but then they don’t tolerate me, so I am spiky,” she told The Guardian in 2014.

“Maybe that’s why I’m quite good at playing spiky elderly ladies.”

Perhaps the best example was 2001’s “Gosford Park” — also written by Fellowes — in which Smith played the frightful Constance, Countess of Trentham, with aplomb.

She was credited with a dogged dedication to her craft.

She survived a breast cancer diagnosis in 2007 and filmed “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” two years later while enduring chemotherapy treatment.

“I was hairless. I had no problem getting the wig on — I was like a boiled egg,” she told The Times of the experience.

The actor also suffered from Graves disease, a manageable thyroid condition causing tiredness, weight loss and heart palpitations.

Smith is survived by her sons, actors Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens

The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association has hired langurs to prevent monkeys from entering the stadium during the ongoing Test match between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur.

The monkeys snatch food and other items like mobile phones from the fans arriving at the stadium to watch the cricket match, causing trouble to the fans. They also disturb camera operators who are part of the Bandar Broadcaster team.

An Indian Express report said that monkeys are afraid of langurs, so the authorities have deployed trained langurs for security outside the stadium so that the fans who come to watch the match in the stadium do not have any trouble from the monkeys.

The first day of the Kanpur Test, which started on Friday, is over. Bangladesh scored 107 runs for the loss of 3 wickets, and the host team had a 1-0 lead in the series.

Shehbaz Sharif slams Israel, warns India of decisive response over Kashmir in hard hitting speech

During a hard hitting address on Friday, Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif slammed Israel at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, highlighting the brutal assault on Gaza, the Ukraine conflict and India’s violent actions in occupied Kashmir.

Declaring Israel’s actions in Gaza a “merciless genocide”, he said, “This is a systematic slaughter of the innocent people of Gaza.”

Warning the world of Israel’s crimes against humanity, he said, “Failure to implement UN resolutions could engulf the entire Middle East, and its consequences would be beyond imagination.”

He stressed the need for Palestine to be admitted as a full member of the United Nations.

Commenting on India’s absurd assertion of invading Azad Kashmir, he clearly stated, “Pakistan will respond decisively to any Indian aggression.”

He also raised concerns about New Delhi’s ruthless occupation that crushes Kashmiri’s lives under an iron fist.

Citing New Delhi’s heinous efforts to turn Kashmir into a playground for exploitation, he said that India always avoids the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions over Kashmir.

He added, “Since August 5, 2019, India has taken unilateral, illegal actions to impose what its leaders ominously call a ‘Final Solution’ for Jammu and Kashmir.”

He urged the implementation of a UN Security Council resolution in Kashmir.

Citing India’s blatant act of aggression, he said, “The UN has failed to counter India’s prolonged curfew, abduction of numerous young Kashmiris and extra-judicial killing.”

The Premier also highlighted the dangers of climate change that Pakistan is currently facing. “Pakistan was devastated by the flood in 2022, which cost 30 billion dollars in damages despite the country contributing less than one per cent to global carbon emissions.”

On SDGs in nearly 100 underdeveloped countries, he concluded his speech by calling it a “death trap” rather than a “debt trap.”

  • Fraud case: Actress Nazish Jahangir’s interim bail rejected

Fraud case: Actress Nazish Jahangir’s interim bail rejected

The Lahore Sessions Court dismissed actress Nazish Jahangir’s bail on the grounds of non-compliance, and the police have registered a case against her.

The fraud case against Nazish Jahangir was lodged by fellow actress Azan Aswad Haroon, who alleged that Jahangir had borrowed Rs 2.5 million and a car for two months.

She claims that even after two months, Nazish has not returned the money or the car.

The court, while rejecting the interim bail of the actress, extended the interim bail of the co-accused till the first week of October.

Previously, in 2020, Nazish and actor Mohsin Abbas Haider were arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cybercrime wing in Karachi.

Both have rejected claims of arrests. They are also rumoured to be in a relationship, which is one of the reasons behind Haider’s divorce.

Now, according to reports, Haider and Jahangir were arrested by the FIA cybercrime wing in Karachi on Friday.

Reports of arrests emerged after Mohsin’s former wife, Fatima Sohail, posted a news clipping on Instagram, thanking the FIA for giving her justice.

They are allegedly being interrogated over charges of blackmailing, harassment, fake pictures and videos after evidence was collected against both of them. Fatima had filed a case with FIA accusing Mohsin and Nazish of harassing her over social media.

Mohsin and Fatima got divorced after fours years of marriage last year. Their divorce was heavily publicised after Fatima, in an explosive social media account posted on July 20, 2019, alleged that Mohsin was domestically abusive and had hit her on multiple occasions. She later filed an FIR against Mohsin on grounds of abusive behaviour and that Mohsin extorted money from her.

In August 2019, Mohsin was found guilty of threatening Fatima by a lower court in Lahore. However, he was found innocent of breach of trust and demanding money from his wife.

Nazish Jahangir, who maintained her innocence throughout the case, faced charges concerning cyber harassment under Pakistan’s laws.

Khan lashes out at Qazi Faez Isa, questions his mental stability

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has lashed out at the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, questioning his mental stability during a conversation with journalists on Friday.

“No Chief Justice in the world has acted the way Pakistan’s Chief Justice is behaving. He does not seem mentally sound to me,” exclaimed Khan, accusing the CJP of biased behaviour.

He also criticised the January 2024 Supreme Court ruling stripping the PTI of its electoral symbol ‘bat’ calling it biased because the “the SC verdict in the reserved seats case has vindicated our stance.”

The former Prime Minister further alleged that the CJP was involved in “election fraud” and was trying to punish PTI for extending his tenure.

“The so-called third umpire also seeks an extension, and for that, they need PDM’s support. They are destroying democracy and the rule of law to maintain power while the nation begs for a single dollar,” stated Khan.
