Govt set to introduce constitutional package today

The federal government’s highly anticipated Constitutional Package which includes significant judicial reforms, including increasing the retirement age of Supreme Court and High Court judges, is set to be introduced in parliament today.

Although the government has kept quiet on the exact details of the proposed amendments, it has been working hard to achieve the votes required to pass the constitutional amendment.

Dawn News reported that it is uncertain whether the ruling coalition has secured the magic number—around 224 votes out of a total of 335 members in the national assembly—to pass the legislation.

However, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, while talking to journalists yesterday, said, “We have completed the number game in the lower house of parliament.”

Geo News reported that the government intends to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court judges to 68, with the retirement age of other high court judges also increased to 65.

Sessions of both parliamentary houses have been summoned this evening with only an hour’s gap.

Imran Khan to face trial over controversial post

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a case against the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, for a controversial post made on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Recalling the tweet posted by former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, FIA declared his post controversial, claiming that it was inciting government officials to mutiny.

The FIA Cybercrime Wing’s inquiry revolves around a video uploaded on May 26, in which Khan’s X account reportedly stated: “Every Pakistani should study the Hamood ur Rahman Commission Report and get to know who was the true traitor, General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

Meanwhile, founder PTI Khan refused to answer to FIA interrogation until his lawyer was present with him.

Earlier, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ata Tarrar hinted at the possible probe of Khan’s social media account by FIA, claiming that accounts were allegedly used to “create chaos and anarchy” in the country and “undermining the national security,” Associated Press Pakistan (APP) reported.

The minister claimed that posts associated with Khan were trying to mobilise the people against major institution heads, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

Commenting on Khan’s post claiming his comparison with Bangladesh’s founder, Sheikh Mujeeb-ur-Rehman, Tarar stated that the Bangladeshi public is now demolishing Mujeeb’s statue.

Justin Timberlake given community service in drunk driving case

Pop star Justin Timberlake was handed a sentence of community service on Friday after he changed his plea to guilty following his arrest for drunk driving, US media reported.

On June 18, the 43-year-old entertainer was pulled over in the town of Sag Harbor, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of New York City, after police observed his BMW go through a stop sign and struggle to stay within road lanes.

Sag Harbor Village Justice Court justice Carl Irace handed Timberlake a community service sentence and ordered the star to make a public statement after the singer pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of driving while alcohol impaired, broadcaster NBC reported.

The charge is a traffic violation that carries a fine between $300 to $500 and a 90-day license suspension.

Timberlake told Irace that he would be willing to perform between 25 and 40 hours of community service to settle the case, NBC reported.

“I try to hold myself to a very high standard for myself. This was not that. I found myself in a position where I could have made a different decision,” Timberlake said outside the court.

“Even if you’ve had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel of a car, there’s so many alternatives,” added Timberlake, who wore a dark cardigan and a pearl necklace.

“I grew up in a small town so I can appreciate and understand the strain, or unique nature, of what this must have been for the people of Sag Harbor… I’m very grateful and I thank them.”

Sag Harbor is an upmarket community in the exclusive Hamptons, notorious for its decadent parties and a favorite destination for the rich and famous, many of whom have summer houses on Long Island.

The officer who pulled over the “Selfish” singer said he was in no fit state to drive, although Timberlake has always insisted he had only one martini at the American Hotel during an evening with friends.

“His eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests,” the police report said.

Timberlake’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr, said that the star was respectful during his encounter with police.

“Contrary to what was reported, (Timberlake) wasn’t drinking other people’s drinks, or warned in advance not to drive, he wasn’t rude, he wasn’t obnoxious, he wasn’t belligerent. In fact he was polite and he was cooperative,” he said outside court.

“His plea today to a reduced and amended non-criminal charge, which is a traffic violation, is consistent with these facts.”

  • Petrol, diesel prices likely to be reduced by more than Rs10 per litre for next fortnight

Petrol, diesel prices likely to be reduced by more than Rs10 per litre for next fortnight

The government is expected to cut petrol and diesel prices in less than two days, following a decrease in international oil rates.

There is a high chance that the petrol price in Pakistan will be reduced by more than Rs10 per litre on September 16, while the diesel price is also expected to be slashed by up to Rs12 per litre for the upcoming fortnight.

Recent reports also suggest that there is little to no chance the government will consider increasing the petroleum levy because if levy is raised, petrol and diesel prices may witness a very slight decrease of Rs6 per litre or even less.

The adjustment in petroleum prices will be decided after analysing the economic factors and the latest international oil rates at the time of announcement.

The price of petrol in Pakistan, according to reliable sources, may drop to Rs247.60 per litre, while diesel is likely to be priced at Rs251.75 after the anticipated cut.

The final decision regarding the reduction in petrol and diesel prices will be announced tomorrow through an official notification and the revised rates will be effective from September 16.

After a little break, gold prices in Pakistan rebounded on Friday and surged to highest level ever seen in the country’s history. The 24-karat gold price witnessed a notable single-day increase of Rs2,900 per tola and closed at Rs265,900.
