Pakistan reports no deaths due to Covid for the first time in two years

For the first time since the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, Pakistan has reported zero Covid deaths today (Wednesday).

The country witnessed a slight rise in cases, with a 1.28 per cent positivity rate and 443 reported new cases, as per the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

However, the country has been maintaining a positivity rate below 2 per cent since mid-March.

Earlier, NCOC chief Asad Umar had announced the decision to lift all the Covid-19 related restrictions but made it clear that the vaccination restriction would not be lifted.

On March 12, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (PM) on National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination, Dr Faisal Sultan announced the government’s decision to shut down NCOC.

In recent months, the rate of Covid cases in Pakistan has remained low after almost three years of fighting the global pandemic.

  • President, PM share special messages on Pakistan Day

President, PM share special messages on Pakistan Day

On the occasion of Pakistan Day, President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan remarked in separate messages that the day will soon come when Pakistan will be economically powerful and successful, Radio Pakistan has reported.

The President further said that the desire for a separate homeland for Muslims in the subcontinent has shown to be politically correct over time.

Human rights violations in India’s illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as well as persecution of minorities in India, he claims, are sufficient evidence that the Muslim leadership of the time foresaw what would happen to Muslims if they remained at the mercy of the Hindu majority in undivided India.

In his message, the Prime Minister emphasised the need of adhering to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s ideals of Unity, Faith, and Discipline, as well as rededicating ourselves to the establishment of Pakistan as a truly democratic welfare state based on the Riyasat-e-Madina model.

He claimed that the current administration had implemented long-term reforms and actions to reduce poverty and promote justice.

The Prime Minister stated that the government’s focus will continue to be on marginalised groups in society in order to give them equal chances.

  • ‘MQM-P will announce they are with us in a day or two,’ Fazl claims

‘MQM-P will announce they are with us in a day or two,’ Fazl claims

After meeting with Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that the party [MQM-P] will announce that they are with the Opposition in a day or two.

Fazl made the announcement alongside MQM-P’s party members in Karachi where he further said that the government allies are no more with them, adding that he is completely satisfied that the no-confidence motion will be successful.

The PDM chief said the language Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has used during the recent rallies in Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KP) is not of an “honourable person”. “I think it is disrespectful to have such people assume such big offices,” he added.

With the no-confidence motion date approaching soon, both the Opposition and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are trying to woo government allies ahead of no-confidence motion which is to take place on March 25.

It is pertinent to mention that the government’s ally in the Centre, the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), has assured PM Imran Khan of complete support on the motion, while other allies i.e Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), MQM-P, and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) are still indecisive.

  • ‘Lifetime ban can curb horse-trading,’ says AGP Khalid Javed Khan

‘Lifetime ban can curb horse-trading,’ says AGP Khalid Javed Khan

Attorney-General of Pakistan (AGP) Khalid Javed Khan has said that the disqualification for a lifetime could curb horse-trading, which the Supreme Court has termed cancer.

Speaking in Geo News programme “Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath”, Javed Khalid said that floor-crossing is not only illegal but also an immoral act. Penalty for crossing floor should not be a one-time disqualification if Article 63A is read with Article 62.

AGP said that if the conscience of a parliamentarian awakens, he should resign and seek re-election. Article 63A does not apply to the government’s allies.

Therefore, a parliamentarian crossing floor should be considered to have lost the qualities stated in Article 62 (1)(f) of Article 63A is to be made effective, AGP Khan said.

As per the attorney general, the two questions — is Article 63A an isolated provision of the Constitution or is it part of the larger scheme that includes Article 62 (1)(f) — is the government’s case in the apex court.

  • ‘Amazed that the sex crimes, child abuse, rape fastest growing crime in Pakistan’: PM Khan tells OIC

‘Amazed that the sex crimes, child abuse, rape fastest growing crime in Pakistan’: PM Khan tells OIC

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan said, “We have failed both the Palestinians and the people of Kashmir. I am sad to say that we have been able to make no impact at all.”

The premier delivered a keynote address at the inaugural session of the 48th Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Tuesday.

“We (Muslims) are 1.5 billion people and yet our voice to stop this blatant injustice is insignificant.”

“Why was Islam equated with terrorism?” questioned PM Imran

The premier began his speech by congratulating the Muslim world for the recent adoption of a resolution against Islamophobia by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), that proclaims March 15 as International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

“Why was Islam equated with terrorism?” Imran questioned, and referred to the Christchurch attack on a mosque as a consequence of this stereotyping.

“Once that happens, how is the man in the street in Western countries, how is he supposed to differentiate between a moderate Muslim and a radical Muslim? Hence, this man walks into a mosque and shoots everyone he could.”

“What should have been done wasn’t; the heads of Muslim countries should have taken a stand on this. Unfortunately, this narrative of Islamic terrorism, Islamic radicalisation, this narrative went on unchecked.”

India does not feel any pressure

The premier said that the international community promised the Kashmiris the right to decide their destiny through a plebiscite. That right was never given to them, he stated.

He said that it was because India does not feel any pressure.

PM Imran Khan asked the OIC nations to have a united front or else these abuses will continue.

The world is “headed in the wrong way”

In response to this wave of Islamophobia, PM Imran said, some Muslim heads of state said they were moderate Muslims. “When you say this, you automatically say there are some extremist Muslims.”

The premier also spoke about the global situation, expressing his apprehension that the world is “headed in the wrong way”.

A new Cold War had almost started and the world could be divided into blocs, he said, stressing that unless 1.5bn Muslims took a united stand, “we will be nowhere.”

He said it was “extremely important” to stabilise Afghanistan because it was the “only way we are going to be able to stop international terrorism from Afghan soil”.

“Let’s not be delusional that some other country can come in and fight terrorism through drones. The only way is a stable Afghanistan government that can take care of terrorism.

“Anyone who knows the Afghan character should be cautioned, please do not push the people of Afghanistan where they feel their sovereignty is being threatened.”

Pakistan has an increased divorce rate, rising vulgarity, which is because the more society gets permissive, the more it has a direct impact on the family system

The premier said that when he became the prime minister of Pakistan he asked the police chief about the crime chart.

“I was amazed to see that the sex crimes, child abuse, and rape are the fastest growing crime in this country.”

PM Imran Khan went on to say that Pakistan has an increased divorce rate, rising vulgarity, which is because the more society gets permissive, the more it has a direct impact on the family system.

He said that one of the most important things about Islam is that it protects the family system, it has values like respecting parents and teachers.

“But [with] the culture that is coming through social media, we really need to think how we are going to protect our generations,” PM Imran Khan said.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi welcomed the OIC foreign ministers to the conference and said that it is a matter of pride for Pakistan to host the 48th session in 2022, which marks the 77th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence.

“The OIC is the collective voice of nearly two billion Muslims. It is the bridge among the Muslim nations and between the Muslim world and the international community,” he said.
