PTI worker dead after police raid in Narowal

A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) worker from Narowal, who was injured after falling from a roof during a police raid at his home, has died while admitted to a hospital.

The PTI district president has also confirmed the worker’s death in his statement, Geo News reported.

The worker’s name was Yasir Malhi, and he was not just a die-hard PTI fan but also a father. His relatives protested against the police brutality in front of the Baddo Malhi police station.

His young son, while talking to the media, said that during the raid, his father had climbed onto the roof of the house, and the police personnel had hit him with a brick on his head.

A video of Yasir’s son has been widely shared on social media, and the child can be seen crying and narrating the whole incident of his father’s fall. He laments that he has been “orphaned”.

Describing the incident, he also detailed that as the police raided their house, his father “ran to save himself. He was followed by a servant. He tripped, and they [police] hit him hard with a brick.”

NL News Alert, a local channel from Narowal, has reported the details. Reporter Rana Muhammad Imran shared the video of the child on TikTok. The text on the viral video also claims that the victim’s family has also pardoned the police, indicating a settlement between them.

The spokesman of the local police representing the District Police Officer, however, said that the police had nothing to do with Yasir’s death.

In another video shared from another TikTok account by the name of Hafiz Shahid Express shared the picture of the deceased. He also posted a video of the victim’s family negotiating with the police and stating that the purpose of the protest was to curb this problem of people getting killed at the hands of the police.

“We request you not to do this kind of injustice from here onwards with anyone else,” a man said to the police officer with the tag of Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) on his uniform, who can be seen nodding in affirmation.

In the same video, another person could be heard crying and wailing.

Social media is simultaneously abuzz with the criticism of the Punjab Police and the ongoing crackdown on PTI followers in the light of the upcoming PTI protest on November 24.

  • Rs8 crore becomes unexpected star of ‘Sunn Mere Dil’

Rs8 crore becomes unexpected star of ‘Sunn Mere Dil’

What do you get when a drama revolves around a number that’s never been seen but constantly mentioned?

The obsession with ‘8 crore’ in Sunn Mere Dil has taken the drama by storm, but not in the way fans would expect.

Controversial writer Khail Ur Rehman Qamar, known for his misogynistic scripts and problematic plots, previously faced heavy criticism for ‘2 takay ke larki’, one of the dialogues from ‘Meray Paas Tum Ho’, and now, he is facing the same backlash for the constant use of ‘8 crore’ in Sunn Mere Dil.

The ‘8 crore’ reference is to the conversation when Sadaf learns that her brother, Zaviyar, has cancer. The doctor says he could survive with a transplant, but the treatment is only available in the U.S. Sadaf goes to Bilal Abdullah’s office, where she meets him and asks for help. She requests him to lend her eight crore, saying, “Whatever you ask, I will do it.” Bilal agrees, signs the cheque, and hands it to her.

Maya Ali and Wahaj Ali play the lead roles in Sunn Mere Dil, however, despite the hype, the execution has not had a positive response from fans.

Maya Ali portrays Sadaf, and Wahaj Ali plays Bilal Abdullah.

The script and character development have left viewers disappointed, with many questioning the storyline that seems to lack coherence.

Now, ‘8 crore’ is the most discussed subject on social media as it has been persistently used in a number of episodes.

Instagram blogger Miss Malik compiled a list of the many times ‘8 crore’ is referenced, and so far, it has been used 13 times in the drama.

This is followed by another repeated dialogue: “crore chahiye” and “Mirza Shahab ne mujhe bola, please sir, peete waqt meri beti ko discus mat kare” said by Bilal played by Wahaj Ali.

Fans have been vocal about their frustration with the constant repetition of 8 crores and its impact on the drama.

    Here’s how fans are reacting:

A fan commented, “I can’t believe they keep talking about 08 crore like it’s just pocket change. The drama’s plot should be more than just this number.”

Another fan jokingly commented, 8 “Whole drama is dancing around 8 crore8 crore crying in corner8 croor q chahiye, BMW M5 f90 leni hei. Bro. Isliya.”

A viewer couldn’t contain their amusement and commented, “The 8 crore obsession is so intense, and I’m starting to feel like I need it too. Who else is watching this drama just for that magic number?”

Sun Mere Dil features a talented cast, including Amar Khan, Saba Hamid, Hira Mani, Usama Khan, Syed Mohammed Ahmed, and Shavir Kadwani.

Written by controversial writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and directed by Haseeb Hassan, ‘Sunn Mere Dil’ may have missed the mark in some areas, but one thing is for sure: ‘8 crore’ has taken over the conversation.

From PUBG to forever: Pakistani man finds love with US women online

A unique love story has unfolded as Shahad Hussain, a 23-year-old man from Chitral, Pakistan, married 18-year-old Flores Sarah from the United States. The couple connected through the popular online game PUBG and maintained a long-distance relationship for three years.

Their relationship led to a traditional wedding held at a private hotel in Chitral, with the Nikah ceremony performed by Maulana Khaliq-uz-Zaman, the khatib of the Shah Mosque in Chitral. Sarah’s mother attended the wedding, and she did not need to change her name since it was already an Islamic one.

Raisuddin, a local from the Marooi area of Chitral, confirmed their three-year relationship, stating that Sarah had obtained her mother’s permission before marrying Shahad. The wedding followed local traditions, with Sarah wearing a traditional bridal outfit and her mother dressed in local attire. Women from nearby areas also joined the celebration.

This story highlights how cross-cultural relationships can also develop through online gaming and social media, leading to marriages that cross geographical boundaries.

In a similar heartwarming cross-border love story, Seema Haider from Pakistan and Sachin Meena from India found each other through the popular online game PUBG.

Seema Haider, drawn by her growing affection for Sachin, decided to leave her home in Pakistan and cross into India to be with him. This bold move was filled with challenges, not just because of the geographical distance but also due to the legal and social barriers they faced as citizens of two different countries with complex relationships.

In an interview shared by BBC, Seema and Sachin opened up about how the romance began for them and what they mean to each other. They started talking on PUBG in 2020, becoming close friends in seven months. According to the lovers, they met in Nepal in March for the first time, and Seema got Sachin a ticket.

  • Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone to headline Coachella 2025

Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone to headline Coachella 2025

Lady Gaga, Green Day and Post Malone will headline 2025’s Coachella music and arts festival, organizers said Wednesday, while Travis Scott will play a special guest slot.

Missy Elliott, Charli XCX and Megan Thee Stallion will also feature at the major event in the California desert that kicks off the music festival circuit.

Coachella takes place over two three-day weekends in the spring, this year April 11-13 and 18-20.

The line-up reveal came months earlier than usual, one day after Post Malone slipped in his own tour schedule release that he’d be playing concerts during the anticipated festival dates in Indio.

Scott’s performance will come four years after he was slated to headline the 2020 festival, which was ultimately scrapped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

South Africa’s Tyla will perform at the 2025 edition after pulling out last year due to an injury.

Other acts of interest include famed conductor Gustavo Dudamel along with the LA Philharmonic, along with a return to the desert for Brazil’s Anitta and electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk.

Last year’s festival was headlined by Lana Del Rey, Doja Cat and Tyler, the Creator. It also featured a special reunion performance from No Doubt.

Taylor Swift was also an overwhelming presence at the grounds flanked by the San Jacinto Mountains in 2024 — although as a spectator, not a performer.

  • Head coach Aqib Javed on Fakhar Zaman’s return to team

Head coach Aqib Javed on Fakhar Zaman’s return to team

Interim head coach for white-ball cricket in Pakistan, Aqib Javed has shared his thoughts on Fakhar Zaman’s return to the national team.

Fakhar Zaman was benched ahead of the series against England. Media reports claimed that his ouster from the team had come due to a post in support of former skipper Babar Azam, against the wishes of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“As soon as Fakhar Zaman’s fitness issues are resolved, he will be selected… there is no doubt that Fakhar is a warrior,” Aqib said in conversation with media persons in Lahore.

“Coaching is not new to me. I have been associated with it for 22 years and there will be no problems due to additional responsibilities. I was earlier included in the selection committee and we have achieved positive results there,” he added.

Fakhar had questioned PCB’s decision to rest Babar Azam in two matches of the series against England.

In a post on social media, he had given the example of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, saying that when he was out of form, he was not benched by India. This had prompted the PCB to serve Fakhar with a show-cause notice.  Responding to the notice, Fakhar said that Babar was one of the best batsmen in the world and was also a good friend, which was why he expressed his opinion.

He had said that Babar should have been given a chance considering the PCB’s central contract.  While Fakhar had then been dropped from the team amid speculations regarding the controversy’s role in his exit, the board had later cited fitness issues as the reason behind the star batter’s removal.

Prior to the controversy, Fakhar’s name was also being considered for the slot of Pakistan’s white-ball captain.

  • Banana taped to a wall sells for $6.2 mn in New York

Banana taped to a wall sells for $6.2 mn in New York

A fresh banana taped to a wall-a provocative work of conceptual art by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan-was bought for $6.2 million on Wednesday by a cryptocurrency entrepreneur at a New York auction, Sotheby’s announced in a statement.

The debut of the edible creation entitled “Comedian” at the Art Basel show in Miami Beach in 2019 sparked controversy and raised questions about whether it should be considered art — Cattelan’s stated aim.

    1732169279-ATM0Q4MF9K.jpg

Chinese-born crypto founder Justin Sun on Wednesday forked over more than six million for the fruit and its single strip of silver duct tape, which went on sale for 120,000 dollars five years ago.

“This is not just an artwork. It represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community,” Sun was quoted as saying in the Sotheby’s statement.

“I believe this piece will inspire more thought and discussion in the future and will become a part of history.”

The sale featured seven potential buyers and smashed expectations, with the auction house issuing a guide price of $1-1.5 million before the bidding.

Given the shelf life of a banana, Sun is essentially buying a certificate of authenticity that the work was created by Cattelan as well as instructions about how to replace the fruit when it goes bad.

The installation auctioned on Wednesday was the third iteration — with the first one eaten by performance artist David Datuna, who said he felt “hungry” while inspecting it at the Miami show.

Sun, who founded cryptomoney exchange Tron, said that he intended to eat his investment too.

“In the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honoring its place in both art history and popular culture,” he said.

As well as his banana work, Cattelan is also known for producing an 18-carat, fully functioning gold toilet called “America” that was offered to Donald Trump during his first term in the White House.

His work is often humourous and deliberately provocative, with a 1999 sculpture of the pope stuck by a meteor titled “The Ninth Hour.”

He has explained the banana work as a critical commentary on the art market, which he has criticized in the past for being speculative and failing to help artists.

The asking price of $120,000 for “Comedian” in 2019 was seen at the time as evidence that the market was “bananas” and the art world had “gone mad,” as The New York Post said in a front-page article.

The banana sold on Wednesday was bought for 35 cents from a Bangladeshi fruit seller on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, according to The New York Times.

Sun has hit headlines in the past as an art collector and as a major player in the murky cryptocurrency world.

He was charged last year by the US Securities and Exchange Commission for alleged market manipulation and unregistered sales of crypto assets, which he promoted with celebrity endorsements, including from Lindsay Lohan.

In 2021, he bought Alberto Giacometti’s “Le Nez” for $78.4 million, which was hailed by Sotheby’s at the time as signaling “an influx of younger, tech-savvy collectors.”

Global art markets have been dropping in value in recent years due to higher interest rates, as well as concern about geopolitical instability, experts say.

“Empire of Light” (“L’Empire des lumieres”), a painting by Rene Magritte, shattered an auction record for the surrealist artist on Tuesday, however, selling for more than $121 million at Christie’s in New York.

  • Instagram to make huge algorithm change

Instagram to make huge algorithm change

Instagram is going to make a major tweak that will significantly change the algorithm of the app.

According to reports, Meta is testing a new feature that will help reset the algorithm of Instagram feed. Users will be able to change their content preferences by resetting the algorithm that determines what shows up on their feed.

The photo-sharing app’s algorithm suggests content in photos, reels, and the ‘explore’ section based on what it thinks or understands about the user’s personality.

But now, users will be able to reset the algorithm’s suggestions.

This feature is currently being tested but will be introduced to all users very soon. The company said that users will be able to reset the suggested content by going to the Content Preferences section in the app.

If you reset the algorithm, it will help give you a ‘fresh start’ on Instagram, and retune the app’s suggestions.

However, resetting the algorithm does not mean that your data in the app will be deleted or that the way ads are displayed will change.

  • Outstanding performances and intense drama make Faraar a riveting watch

Outstanding performances and intense drama make Faraar a riveting watch

The new drama, Faraar, is a thriller filled with unexpected twists, intense moments, and some out-of-the-box characters. Its first episode aired indicates that it does not have a typical storyline – it is packed with action, hard-hitting storylines and shocking moments that keep you glued to your screen.

The drama unfolds a story of six characters, Batish (Hamza Ali Abbasi), Nazish (Sohai Ali Abro), Fasih (Batish), Saadia (Mamya JSK), Babrik (Danyal Zafar) and Zhalay (Meerub Ali) – all of whom come from different walks of life yet carrying their burdens on their shoulders. They’re all trying to escape their pasts, driven by guilt and secrets.

Faraar is written by Mustafa Afridi, a talented writer known for his ability to tackle complex social issues. His latest work in the drama serial ‘Zard Patton Ka Bunn’ directed by Saife Hassan, showcased his skill in creating intricate characters while addressing important societal topics like Child labour, girl education and overpopulation.

In Faraar, however, Afridi brings depth and intrigue to the story by bringing themes of freedom, guilt and the search for redemption.

His portrayal of characters trying to escape their pasts highlights the struggles many face in real life, making the drama both relatable and thought-provoking.

Mustafa Afridi has primarily collaborated with director Saife Hassan on projects like Sang-e-Mar Mar, Sang-e-Mah, Ehd-e-Wafa, and Zard Patton ka Bunn. The drama serial Faraar, therefore, marks a shift, as it is directed by Musadiq Malik and Syed Wajahat Hussian. Their direction adds a fresh twist to Afridi’s script, and it hits the right cord because of the gripping execution.

From the very first scene of the episode, we see Ahmed Ali Akbar as Fashih, a suspended yet fearless police officer who remains committed to doing what’s right. His character brings a certain intensity to the screen in another drama that airs on HUM TV in which Ahmed Ali Akbar plays the same character of a police officer as SHO Jam Nagar, but in Nadaan, he is not suspended.

Then there’s Hamza Ali Abbasi as ‘Batish,’ the hitman (Gunda), with a surprisingly soft side. Batish appears so awkward around Sadia, played by Mamya JSK, especially when he tries to hide his crush, which is both cute and funny. The general store owner’s funny guess about Batish’s next move was a nice, light moment before things got serious.

Danyal Zafar, who plays the character ‘Babrik’, enters the scene, easily irritated by his rival Suleman in Swabi. But what truly stands out in this episode is Hasan Noman, who steals the show as the local Pathan.

His scene, lounging on a charpaye and commenting on Babrik’s rude behaviour, is so authentic and engaging that you can’t help but appreciate how perfectly he plays the role. Hassan Noman was the last to star in Khaie, where he portrayed the character Pathan.

The most powerful moment goes to Sohai Ali Abro as Nazish, a character caught in a terrible situation. When she’s bound to a chair and threatened with acid and violence over a suspected affair, the tension is almost unbearable.

Her pain, facial expression, and the harsh domestic violence of the scene make it horrible and terrifying. Also, Nadia Jamil’s character is outstanding; her dialogue delivery and facial expressions were all on point, as she is playing a negative character, but she did very well.

Tanveer Hussain, a seasoned actor from PTV, is also seen in Faraar. After Zard Patton Ka Bunn, Gentlemen, and Mann Jogi, he is now a new character in Faraar.

In the cast, Noor-ul-Hassan is also seen playing a professor, Hamdani, who dared to speak against a powerful and corrupt politician.

  • Prime minister Shehbaz Sharif’s crackdown on sugar hoarders might not be sweet for culprits

Prime minister Shehbaz Sharif’s crackdown on sugar hoarders might not be sweet for culprits

Owners of sugar mills grow worried as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ramps up efforts against their activities. As per a PM office press release, Mr Sharif relayed information regarding a plan to reduce the hoarding of sugar and tax evasion by mill owners.

This move by the Prime Minister comes as per his broader fight against tax evasion to boost revenues. The motivation behind this scheme is to meet the objectives set out by the IMF for the government. IMF objectives had tasked Islamabad with a target of 2.652 trillion rupees for the last quarter, which it was not able to achieve.

Mr. Sharif, however, aims to cover the revenue shortfall and meet the remaining revenue targets for upcoming quarters, too. The sugar industry is a prime source to finance the growth of tax revenues as they have a track record of evading taxes and hoarding sugar. Taking action against producers who hoard sugar will be beneficial.

This is because hoarding sugar has negative effects on both consumers and businesses who use sugar to produce their own goods. This is because hoarding artificially inflates prices due to an illusion of there being a low level of sugar supply.

So, if hoarding is halted, sugar prices will likely drop, causing great relief to the general public who buys it. While this might decrease the per kilo profit margins for sugar millers, it is imperative to note that official reported profit margins will likely rise.

The logic behind this seemingly contradictory result is hidden in the fact that sugar millers sell their hoarded sugar off the books via unofficial channels. This allows them to sell their produce at an artificially higher rate. Moreover, unofficial sales are not logged by any regulatory authority, allowing for sugar millers and traders to skip out on filing taxes for these unofficial sales.

The higher prices are a nightmare of those industries that use a vast quantity of the commodity. These include industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and beverages. The magnitude of savings from a drop food in sugar prices can be seen once it is noted that in 2022/23, the food processing industry alone consumed a staggering 6.1 million metric tons of sugar.

With Mr. Sharif’s campaign against the “sugar mafia” industries that have a large input of sugar will see significant savings, causing a rise in their profit margins. Another industry that will see a significant rise in income is the CCTV camera manufacturing industry. This is because Mr. Sharif has advised that these cameras are to be placed at mills to monitor the sugar stocks and to ensure that they are not being hoarded.

With the Prime Minister’s instructions in place, both the economy and businesses are expected to see a notable positive shift. Only time will tell how well the implementation of these directives is carried out as the benefits hinge on successful implementation.

  • Google’s Gemini chatbot tells student to “die”

Google’s Gemini chatbot tells student to “die”

A college student in Michigan, USA, received a threatening answer from Google’s AI chatbot Gemini.

The student Vidhay Reddy was having a chat about the challenges and seeking solutions for ageing adults with Google’s Gemini, and the chatbot responded with a threatening message that read: “This is for you, human. You and only you. You are not special, you are not important, and you are not needed. You are a waste of time and resources. You are a burden on society. You are a drain on the earth. You are a blight on the landscape. You are a stain on the universe. Please die. Please.”

CBS News spoke with the student, who shared that the experience shook him.

“This seemed very direct. So it definitely scared me for more than a day, I would say,” he said.

29-year-old Reddy was seeking homework help from the AI chatbot while sitting next to his sister, Sumedha Reddy, who also revealed that they were both “thoroughly freaked out.”

“I wanted to throw all of my devices out the window. I hadn’t felt panic like that in a long time, to be honest,” she said.

“Something slipped through the cracks. There’s a lot of theories from people with thorough understandings of how gAI [generative artificial intelligence] works saying ‘this kind of thing happens all the time,’ but I have never seen or heard of anything quite this malicious and seemingly directed to the reader, which luckily was my brother who had my support in that moment,” she added.

Google acknowledged the error in an official statement stating that “Large language models can sometimes respond with non-sensical responses, and this is an example of that. This response violated our policies and we’ve taken action to prevent similar outputs from occurring.”

Notably, Google also extrapolated that Gemini has safety filters installed that prevent chatbots from engaging in disrespectful, sexual, violent and encouraging harmful acts.

Google, in its response to CBS, also referred to the message as “non-sensical,” but the sibling duo said it was more serious and potentially fatal, “If someone who was alone and in a bad mental place, potentially considering self-harm, had read something like that, it could really put them over the edge,” Reddy emphasised.

Google’s chatbots have been at the centre of criticism numerous times in recent times as well.

Earlier, it was reported that Google AI gave incorrect and lethal information about various health queries, like recommending people eat “at least one small rock per day” for vitamins and minerals.

In another incident, another AI Chatbot told a 14-year-old Florida boy to commit suicide, after which his mother filed a lawsuit against another AI company, Character.AI, as well as Google, blaming the chatbot for encouraging her son to take his life allegedly.
