IT ministry notifies amended social media rules framed under Peca

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication on Thursday notified the amended social media rules that stakeholders and digital rights activists have strongly criticised, reports Javed Hussain for Dawn.

The rules titled the “Removal and Blocking of Unlawful Online Content (Procedure, Oversight, and Safeguards) Rules, 2021”, have been framed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca), 2016.

    The rules are as follows:

Social media companies will have to register with Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) within three months.

Social media outlets will be required to establish an office in Pakistan “as and when feasible” — instead of nine months as required previously.

The Working Group consists of Ministry of Information &Technology as the Lead ministry, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Ministry of Law & Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Digital Media (Spokesperson), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and Digital Media Wing as permanent members while Chair of NSMWG can include any other ministry/department or Think Tank as a Co-opted member as and when required.

  • Prime suspect in Gojra motorway gang-rape taken into custody

Prime suspect in Gojra motorway gang-rape taken into custody

The prime suspect in the gang-rape case of an 18-year-old woman on the M-4 motorway in Gojra has been arrested, reported Geo News.

According to the Punjab Police, the main suspect is under interrogation, while a search is underway to find the other suspects.

Moreover, the police have confirmed that the rape survivor underwent medical examination and a DNA sample is being taken, adding that the action has been initiated to arrest the other suspects.

The suspects lured the young woman from Toba Tek Singh on the pretext of offering her a job.

In the First Information Report (FIR), the survivor’s paternal aunt said that her 18-year-old niece received a message on her mobile phone for a job interview in Gojra.

Her aunt said that upon reaching the place, the suspects put the survivor into a car, raped her on the motorway, and fled after throwing her at the Faisalabad Interchange.

‘Grudge match’: Ian Smith looks forward to Pakistan vs New Zealand T20 World Cup encounter

Former New Zealand cricketer Ian Smith believes that the encounter between Pakistan and New Zealand at the T20 World Cup will be a ‘grudge match’ and he is eagerly waiting for both teams to go head-to-head.

Last month, Pakistani fans were upset when New Zealand unilaterally decided to pull out of the series against Pakistan due to ‘security threats’.

“It’s a bit of a grudge match now on the basis that New Zealand pulled out of the tour over there just recently and came home, which didn’t please Pakistan at all,” said Smith, who is also a renowned commentator, according to Stuff.

“We were right in doing what we did but it doesn’t ease the pain for them so there will be feeling in that game. It’s the first game that we play and I think there will be a real edge to that one so I’m looking forward to it,” he further added.

The cancelation of New Zealand’s tour had much deeper implications as PCB was tirelessly repairing Pakistan’s image on the international stage ever since the 2009 terrorist attack on Sri Lanka’s team.

“This conspiracy has been hatched to tarnish the image of Pakistan, as its image was going to build up due to the role it is playing for peace in the region,” said Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will face India first at Dubai Inetrnational Stadium on October 24. The green shirts will be encountering the black caps on October 26.
