‘I had already sent you with great difficulty’: PM Khan gets direct with Firdous Awan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (CM) Punjab on information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan made an all-out attempt to have a formal meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan but didn’t get a chance for it, reports Geo News.

As per the sources of Geo News, Awan kept waiting for the PM at the waiting room of Governor House in Punjab to hold a formal talk with the premier. When PM Khan made an appearance, Awan tried to meet him, however, security personnel stopped her.

Awan managed to get a chance for a walking chat with PM Imran Khan as he headed toward a helicopter to leave the Governor House. The PM heard her while walking, reported Geo News.

“What is all this that happened to me in Punjab?” Awan complained to PM Khan, sources said. “You must know better, I had already sent you with great difficulty,” was the premier’s response.

Addressing the media, Awan rejected reports of her being snubbed. Instead, she said had a rather pleasant meeting with the prime minister.

She also said some people who are jealous are spreading rumours. “No meeting can take place with the prime minister without a scheduled appointment.”

“Some mischievous elements aren’t able to digest my meeting with the PM,” said Awan. “Hence, they are disseminating false and baseless propaganda.”

Earlier on Monday, the former CM adviser went to the premises of the Punjab Assembly to attend the oath-taking ceremony of PTI MPA Ahsan Saleem Baryar, but she was stopped from entering the ceremony.

Printing national flag in different colours prohibited by Lahore Court

A Lahore court has forbidden the printing of flags in different colours. The printing of flag in various colours,  other than its original scheme, and on distorted shaped portraits undermining the national dignity might be considered a defilement, Samaa News reported.

“Our parcham (flag) is not merely a piece of cloth. The white and dark green field represents peace and prosperity, the crescent on the flag [symbolises] progress and the five-ray star signifies light and knowledge, which symbolises the five most Holy personalities (Panjtan-e-Pak A.S),” Justice Ali Baqar Najafi ruled while hearing a petition filed by Advocate Shakeela Rana.

The court observed that according to the National Flags Protocol, people cannot legally do this while celebrating independence day. It must not touch the ground, shoes, feet, or anything unclean.

    • It must not be flown in the darkness
    • It must not be marketed with anything
    • When raised or lowered, it must be saluted
    • It must not fly or be displayed upside down or with a crescent and star facing left
    • It must not be displayed where it is likely to get dirty
    • It must not be set on fire or trampled upon
    • It must not be buried or lowered into a grave

People who will violate any of these will be imprisoned for three years under Section 123-B (defilement of the national flag) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

“Arshad played good cricket and he uplifted Pakistan’s name. A lot of hard work was visible in his performance. There was honesty, discipline in his body language. I think the government should acknowledge our heroes and reward them,” she said.

The clip from this interview has gone viral on social media and has received polarizing response from the netizens.

It is pertinent to mention here that Arshad finished fifth in the Javelin Throw event of the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He threw fifth-best throw covering a distance of 84.62m.

  • ‘Kabul should avoid pointing fingers at Pakistan for its own failures’: Shah Mahmood Qureshi

‘Kabul should avoid pointing fingers at Pakistan for its own failures’: Shah Mahmood Qureshi

Foreign Minister (FM) Shah Mahmood Qureshi asked the Afghan government to avoid pointing fingers at Pakistan for its own failures and look into its governance issues.

In a press briefing at the Foreign Office (FO), he said Pakistan had repeatedly said it had no favourites in Afghanistan and saw all sides of the conflict as Afghans.

“It is unfortunate to scapegoat Pakistan for the failures of others; the issues of governance and meltdown of Afghan National Defence Forces need to be looked into — and not just start pointing fingers at Pakistan.”

“The time has come when the world wants answers to what has been achieved in Afghanistan in these past 20 years. The taxpayer in the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), and Europe wants to know who is responsible for no achievement. Pakistan will not be apologetic, as we are not accountable nor responsible for the trillions spent and nothing to show for it. No capacity building, no arms, where has everything gone?” remarked Qureshi.

“Pakistan is against a forceful takeover of Afghanistan. Pakistan does not want a military takeover, as we do not support one. We speak of a political takeover. A military takeover will result in more bloodshed and the people of Afghanistan have suffered and this suffering should end. Leadership inside Afghanistan should rise to the occasion and avoid a military takeover. We urge all sides to show respect for human rights and international humanitarian laws,” said Qureshi.

“We had made a request to be present there, but unfortunately, it was not accepted,” he said, adding that at the time of India assuming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) presidency, Pakistan had asked it to operate objectively.

However, India did not behave in a manner that was befitting of that responsibility, the foreign minister said. “India has been, in our view, in breach of its obligation as president of the Security Council.”

Pakistan has been facilitating the peace process, and its role has been and will continue to be of a facilitator, the foreign minister said.

“We cannot guarantee, we can only facilitate,” he said, noting it was up to the Afghans to decide their future, and now the world community was backing Pakistan’s narrative that there is no military solution in Afghanistan.

While on the request of President Ashraf Ghani, intra-Afghan peace talks were postponed in Islamabad, Pakistan now looks forward to the August 11 peace talks of the troika consisting of Pakistan, China, and Russia with an aim of chartering a political way out for an Afghan-led peace process.

“We reiterate the need for the effective use of available peace mechanisms,” Qureshi said, adding Pakistan has always stressed the need for talks.

  • Neeraj Chopra wanted Arshad Nadeem to win medal in Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Neeraj Chopra wanted Arshad Nadeem to win medal in Tokyo 2020 Olympics

India’s javelin Gold winner Neeraj Chopra said that he wanted to share the Tokyo 2020 Olympics podium with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem.

Speaking to News 18, the 23-year-old, who became India’s first historic athletic Gold winner with a 87.58m throw, said that he would have loved it if the Pakistani athlete won a medal as it would have put Asia on the map.

Arshad, who was Pakistan’s last medal hope, finished 5th with his best throw of 84.62m, 0.82m behind bronze medalist Vitezslav Vesely.

“[It would have been] good to have Nadeem on the podium too. Asia ka naam ho jata [Asia would have made a name],” Neeraj said.

When asked about Indo-Pak rivalry, the athlete did not think it was fair to drag the hype over to the Olympics and felt that it was best left in cricket.

“It’s okay to do the comparisons in cricket where 7-8 countries are taking part but not fair in Olympics,” he said.

Arshad congratulated the Indian athlete on winning the Gold medal and called him his favourite.

  • Arshad Nadeem’s failure in the Olympics because of extensive use of social media: Chief, Pak team

Arshad Nadeem’s failure in the Olympics because of extensive use of social media: Chief, Pak team

Pakistan contingent’s chef-de-mission to the Tokyo Olympics Brig Zaheer Akhtar expressed his displeasure over missing a golden opportunity of winning a medal that could have been a Gold even, as highly talented Arshad Nadeem was capable of touching the 90-meter mark, had he and his coach stayed focused on achieving the ultimate goal prior to the finals, reports Abdul Mohi Shah for The News.

“Nonstop social media usage by Arshad and his coach in between the qualifying and final rounds turned out to be the main reason behind this failure,” said Brig Zaheer.

Talking to The News from Tokyo, Brig Zaheer said Arshad looked set to topple even the best as he gave an early indication of his talent during the qualifying round.

“When he sent javelin to over 85 meters in the qualifying round, Indian coach who trained the Gold medalist Chopra was on record to have said that Arshad was the biggest threat to his athlete, having all the potential to win even Gold. Such was the impact of his qualifying round performance where he hardly put his full effort and yet he reached over 85. The Indian camp was wary of Arshad and his potential.”

Brig Zaheer said despite clear instructions, both Arshad and his coach Fayyaz Bokhari were seen using social media uninterruptedly. Later, it was learnt that they even sent premature videos back home halfway into the competition, which “surely was an act of total indiscipline”.

The contingent’s chef-de-mission said he had absolutely no doubt in Arshad’s inborn talent.

“His coach was even talking on the telephone when finals were going on but I don’t know to whom he was talking to. That is the reason why Arshad did not know that time was running out for his final throw. His half-hearted last attempt was made in haste. With J Vetter already out, it should have been a direct contest between Arshad and Chopra for a Gold medal. Sadly that could not happen more due to Arshad and his coach’s excessive use of social media in between the qualifying round and finals.”
